- This week we channel our inner 19th century gold prospectors by grabbing a shovel and some pans and exploring the famous Dexter Creek in Nome, Alaska. Dexter Creek was the third-most productive creek in the Nome gold rush after Anvil and Glacier creeks, producing 14,500 ounces in 1900 alone. Can we find some sweet G among the ruins?

I always wanted to go gold panning and then they discovered gold in the creek I`d swam in hundreds of times and now it`s NO TRESPASSING! In Louisiana! Old people told us there were some people who made money panning for gold here during the great depression and we thought they were lying! Anyway, the name of the creek is Hemps Creek in LaSalle Parish Louisiana. Supposedly before the Civil War there was a successful gold dredging operation just south of my location in Indian Creek in Rapides Parish. Bigfoot was sighted in both these areas too in the past.
I did successfully find flour gold behind the hydro dam at the end of Toledo Bend Lake in a restricted area so we couldn`t go back. The water was down so no flow through the dam. The gold was very concentrated along with black sand in holes worn in the bedrock by the current. Large nuggets can be found (some say) in the Sabine River on top of the bedrock below the city of Logansport if you have the equipment and don`t get caught. Making money is illegal in this state! Keep that in mind.

Hey Emily didn’t even know you and Alex were married. Of course I have been around since Zeke days. Anyway it’s funny how gold fever infects one. I think I have had it for quite sometime but only get to partake in such endeavors with the purchase of Paydirt. I know one can’t get gold rich that way but hey got to satisfy the itch somehow. Does a metal detector help ?
I dug under a trommel once that had a small pin hole leak towards the end of it. Had lots of jine gold. Ran about 8 buckets full over a sluice ended up with about 3 penney weights of gold. To much work for a small amount!
But did you have fun
Not really, it was mostly silty mud. I used my old cement mixer washed all the silt out down to one big pan full out of a 5gal bucket. After 10 buckets or so that was enough for me. Gold here in nevada can be very small fine particles. I've found other areas of this fine gold concentrated in areas. Used a sluice screened material then ran it over carpet and small expanded metal. Still wasn't catching all of it. So I added 3' to the end flared it out some using thick felt nothing else. After about 1/2 hr the felt started to turn to a goldish color! On the cleanouts I did the same on a recirculating sluice. Panned out the cons then rerunning them in a tumbler using mercury and ended up with more than what was panned out! I did ok but it took to much work and time. So I moved on! Ha! Had a claim that produced good gold but the government turned it into a wildlife sanctuary for sage grouse! Looking at 4 claims in southern idaho, close to where gold was first discovered!
