It's crazy to think that there was just a moment in time, a sliver in the grand scheme of things, where a musical brought all these different people together for one performance
@@katesaporito7017 the ironic thing is he's not actually Irish. That's Jeff Leyton who is Scottish an did Valjean first in Manchester in 1991 and then on tour and in London. They should have marked Colm up as Irish and did so at the European football championships when they did a similar thing (it's on here, look it up).
The best moment for me, alongside the Irish singer totally and utterly doing us as a nation proud, is when everyone; the Val Jeans, the cast and the chorus sing at once.
For this to happen, a book written in 1862 needed to be translated into dozens of languages and sold all over the world. It would then need to stay popular for 118 years with re-releases, movies, comics, then be made into a French album, which would become an English musical. Then it would become popular in 17 countries at at least 12 (?) languages, so that all these signers would come to the same place, representing 4 mediums, a dozen languages, and 123 + years of the same story by Hugo. Wow.
It's really incredible how even with the story taking place as a very specific time period in France had themes that would resonate all across the world
@@annakim9870 I agree. And the fact that Victor Hugo was in exile at the time he wrote this, this story managed to stay current and touched so many people. This is one of those stories that's a rare classic and, as you said, still resonates across the world.
I was incredibly lucky to see Colm Wilkinson in the role of Jean Valjean and no matter how many others have played the part. Colm was and always will be Jean Valjean. Not only is his voice exquisite, he was also so believable. When he sang Bring Him Home the theatre fell silent. It was one of the most magical moments in the show and I for one was reduced to tears. No one has ever come close to singing this with such feeling as Colm, he sings it from deep inside his soul.
Man, I just want to freakin' cry everytime I view this (and I view quite often). Chills, chills, everywhere in my body!! I'm in love with Colm Wilkinson, and I just love the 17 Valjeans as well. I look forward to the 50th Anniversary!!!!!!
First time I watched the 10th anniversary I was in school; as soon a I saw all the world wide Jean Valjeans I literally gasped in delight. This was an AMAZING performance, and is absolutely beautiful in EVERY language.
What an unbelievably awesome concert!! What an unforgettable moment for sure! I noticed most of the non-english speaking europeans were really strong and masculine, like sort of macho valjean. I love it!
Incredibly well done I can't imagine the logistics of trying to fit every different language with their different words and consonants and intonations and have it come out so flawlessly Edit: I also love how excited all these different Valjeans look. Art is more enjoyable when the artist is having fun I think
@@Wildstag That, and he was hot. (yes, I noticed the difference with the vowel-consonant sounds in Japanese; Takeshi Kaga was definitely very expressive, which didn't happen with all the singers). It's a lovely video.

I can't think of a good name Now that I know he was the Chairman on the original Iron Chef, I’m kinda wondering if he couldn’t quite turn off the “Chairman” act, if he was doing “Iron Chef” back in 1996 or thereabouts.
Wow, what a treat to see and hear this international gathering of 17 'Jean Valjeans' performing "Do You Hear the People Sing?", each singing in his native language.
What would Victor Hugo think of this amazing interpretation ❤ the songs, the incredible harmonies, my personal favorite is one day more, the power, strength, passion even the innkeepers get their bit comic relief, it's all heart stopping , then drink with me, a song maybe overlooked compared to the bigger stronger songs but the sadness of these young friends singing goodbye to each other in this sweet poignant song is underrated. I love ❤ it. I love them all
17 great artists from 16 different countries - all coming together in common purpose, to celebrate one of the greatest musical/artistic masterpieces of all time. We could sure use something like this unity now in this troubled world.

Absolutamente hermoso, conmovedor. Para llevárselo en el corazón. ¿No podrán alguna vez las naciones y los poderes seguir ejemplos con éste? ¿Cuándo aprenderemos a cantar, vivir, extender el don de la vida, como verdaderos hermanos?
French novel, British - written play. and the 17 Valjeans are European, American, Canadian, then Japanese. for real though. I love that a lot of these musicals are pretty popular in Japan. I've even seen bits of a Japanese production of the Count of Monte Cristo musical. with how much we see their culture influencing things here in the West, it's cool to see the other way around being true as well. x3
Les Mis 10th Anniversary is my favorite. I wish I could have been there in person, how awesome that would have been. My kids were ages 10 - 14 and they loved it also. My husband wasn’t watching and became confused by some of the lines. A really awesome production. But I must admit I have unusual kids that enjoy shows like musicals such as, 1776, The Music Man, Hello Dolly, Taming of The Shrew, Brigadoon, etc. Thank you for sharing.

The Japanese singer is a very famous celebrity in Japan...I am pretty sure with his education background and vast experience in performing, he'd know what he is singing -_- Just wiki for his credibility.

Colm Wilkinson remains one of the most distinct, strongest voices ever. What a talent and our world is so lucky to hav him.

The best, no one comes close to attaining his standard.
Who recognized him as the bishop in the 2012 movie?

The Irish Valjean actually had a small cameo in the concert if I remember.

Me too. I saw Colm in London he was spellbinding and Bring me home made all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!
I saw him in NYC Broadway and yes, he is Jean Valjean. And my favorite song is Bring Him Home, standing O!❤️🇺🇸
TOTAL goosebumps ! OUTSTANDING
I love how you can still hear lea's (eponine) voice amidst the hundred voices on the stage
My family is Danish; when my dad heard the part of the song sung by the singer from Denmark, he started to cry. AWESOME FINALE!
How awesome
When all the Valjean come in, it’s essentially the portal scene from Endgame, and Javier is Thanos just watching.
This is the best review ever.
I really could hear Lea's Eponine standout amidst hundreds of singers! Awesome!
Proof that music is a universal language among our species
I remember watching this on PBS back in the mid 90s as a kid! I fell in love with this musical!
Grateful I got to see Les Mis in its first run on Broadway. Craig Schulman was my first Jean Valjean but Colm Wilkinsonwill be the best!😊
I love how there are hundreds of people singing and you can still hear lea's lone voice...
