- Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free!!
Do you hear the people sing?
Singing a song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!
Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance
Some will fall and some will live
Will you stand up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!
Javert's worst nightmare
Pfffffft
How the hell did this comment get so popular, ha. Blows up my notifications everyday.
+DestinyofAwe Because it's fucking hilarious.
+DestinyofAwe javert be like I had 24601 problems now I had 17 more
So is so true
Ireland was like: "I only got one line, I'm gonna fucking nail this shit"
"Here's 800 years of struggle !"
The first line was also sung by an Irishman too, the original and still best Valjean, Colm Wilkinson from Dublin.
Best voice for sure
The lad in the white shirt at the start spent 10+ years performing this song during Les Mis in Broadway. I'd hope you would know his nationality? Stage Heroes..
@@arigones it's not a nationality thing. He'd come under USA
This is literally the biggest "me and the boys" moment in history.
Amazing how this can be sung in so many different languages and still not lose the power/message
the song of freedom can never lose it's power

Somewhere there are 17 Javert's looking for Jean Valjean.
Or one Javert looking for seventeen Valjeans...
+Cockroach Charlie Would he have thrown himself off of a bridge sooner or later than intended?
Anthony Hart
LOLLOL
Anthony Hart At least the Japanese Valjean was also Javert
Does that mean he's on a quest of self-discovery?
javert be like: i got 99 problems and valjean is 17 of them
I got 24601 problems, and Valjean is all of them
made my day lol
Omg this comment wins so hard
I laughed at this a lot harder than I should have.
Genius. Pure genius.
It’s 2023…..The company NEEDS TO DO THIS AGAIN. What a thrill. The MOST Revolutionary & Emotional / Raw musical EVER Composed.
I would be over the moon to watch this production on stage again. If they ended up pulling this kind of mind-blowing move while I was there I would probably cry and then faint and then cry some more, lol. But to be serious it would legitimately be one of my favorite lifetime memories, for sure.

Victor Hugo this is the fruits of your labor thank you for such a powerful and unforgettable book you have written for the world. Your work will go on forever and ever. Rest In Paradise Victor Hugo!
I read one comment that Hugo spent 17 years writing novel.
Les Misérables is one of the greatest stories in the world. I think if everyone stopped to read it we could be much happier as a species.
I love it for 3 reasons.
1. A lot of Jean Valjeans.
2. Lea Salonga's voice is so clear and cuts through so many voices.
3. The most powerful Do You Hear the People Sing and One Day More .

Javert...or people with attitudes like Javert. And I know plenty of people like that. Too many "Judging Javerts" in the world. We need more forgiving Bishops with silver candlesticks.
+druidkat7 lol
Lol??
Probably in his most secret dreams too, taking it to another Victor Hugo adaptation, think of Frollo and Esmeralda, he though about just killing her, but deep inside he actually desired her.
Japan was the only non-Western country to participate, and I am proud that Takeshi Kaga, the only person of non-European sang in Japanese, an Asian language. And Japan is the third country where Les Misérables has been performed, after the United Kingdom and the United States.
Takeshi Kaga has the most resonant, vibrant voice. I saw him singing for the first time today. His voice is amazing. I can't believe this man was Iron Chef Chairman Kaga. I recognized his face from somewhere, and checked his bio. Someone should post videos of his musical performances.
It’s very nice.
誇り高いです。もし次があるなら香港を代表した方もお招きして頂きたいですね。
Of course he is know in the west as "The Chairman" from the Japanese Iron Chef.
@@eeduranti I had no idea he was a famous musical theater actor.
This can only be likened to the Olympics for musical theatre. Getting to walk with your countries flag in such a prestigious setting and then come put with this history making performance.
Ok, sure, Ireland nailed it, but he got the best part to sing, with the key change. That helps a lot.
To song is to short to have gotten through all 17 of them, so they repeated the whole song and edited a few lines. Hungary and Ireland sang the same line.
That’s what I thought too
No way. _"Some will fall and some will live, will you stand up and take your chance? The blood of the martyrs will water the meadows of France!"_ Australia got by far the best bit. Ireland got a single line.

@@bailzers5989 he was also the original valjean that I think got the musical off and running hence he started. It didn't do well in france as fair as I know. Though it may have changed now.
That’s my college friend Craig Shulman singing the last Valjean. Vice like a Clarion bell. One of the nicest men ever 💜💜💜
OUTSTANDING! That guy from Austria was very powerful!
It shows just how truly international Les Miserables is. On the face of it it's the story of 19th century French protestors but it speaks to ALL people who are being downtrodden and have no rights.
Proletarians of the world unite and join the peaceful but challenging struggle. You have nothing to lose but your shackles! G'day mate from Australia 🇦🇺 .
it could be the new national anthem of the UK at present.
It is only about 20 or so countries that have translated versions though. I'd argue that this song actually represents a very Western view of revolution. Which makes sense, it is a French song. I'd say that it's not as translatable to other non-Western cultures as it may seem.
@@EternalShadow1667 I see, that’s quite interesting, would you happen to have a song you would consider more international?
Pretty much the song for anyone working in retail. Or anyone working in a corporate office and not in the C-suite.
No one:
Not a soul:
Mr. Leyton from Ireland: V I B R A T T O
Can't explain why but having watched and heard that countless times I still can't watch it without a tear coming to my eyes. Astonishingly powerful.
Chills every time. It never gets old ❤❤❤❤
If we could all be together like this.
Les Miserables is brilliant in every language.
Fucking Ireland!! That was insane! I just keep looping the epicness of his voice over and over wishing I could just hear him sing the full thing
I want to hear him sing who am I and bring him home
Noor Semrani there actually is a video online of him singing Who Am I, but it's awesome to hear his intense voice in this song
Also, he sings the last part of the intro in the 10th anniversary, the "how long oh lord before you let me die"
I've seen his "bring him home" on youtube, search it
Ikr he killed it 👍
This was the most epic finale ever. If there was one last song on Earth, one grande finale, this should be it.
People don't get IT. The bulk of humanity is not White men from mostly European nations or the UK. The song speaks for well over 7 billion humans.
I doubt there was any evil intent behind the performance. I'm pretty sure that a Nigerian Valjean would have been perfectly welcome.
As for the gender thing, Valjean IS male in the play. You could change the script, like performing Hamlet with all-female roles, but then you would have a new piece of art, not the original.
I agree that the message in the song is universal -a call for people to overcome persecution and adversity.
just accept this is beautiful
+Tore Bolhoej lol
+Tore Bolhoej but right
I can only imagine how powerful this must have been to experience in person rather than through an old video. Because even through this video, you can hear just how powerful everyone's voices are together so I can only imagine hearing how booming it must have felt to witness this in person.
3:43 the Irish Jean Valjean is fantastic.
*Japan* : everything sounds better in Japanese
*Canada* : sounds too happy
*Austria* : takes this song VERY seriously
*Australia* : sounds *way* too happy singing "the blood of the martyrs will water the fields of France"
*Ireland* : IT'S MY ISLAND
Australia: ... will water the "meadows" of France. Just sayin'.

Jesus. That explosive hit of "One Day More". I would have killed to be in that theater just for that.
Then you'd have Javert after you.
Les Miserables in the Multiverse of Jean Valjean.
Why does the Japanese version sound so damn good? That's not a read. It's just an utterly different language with a very different musical legacy. I really want to see more of the show in Japanese.
Takeshi Kaga is very well known for his voice - speaking and acting.
In fact, when they dubbed Iron Chef Japan, they kept anything he was on screen speaking not dubbed (but subtitled) because the voice actor didn’t fit. (He is the chairman for the Japan shows).
It sounds like he’s trying to sing after burning his mouth from hot food.
I bet everyone in that room was hit with a wave of goosebumps when they sang in unison.
Even now I get goosebumps having watched this years ago.
Their faces melted like the Nazis in Raiders
Geesebumps?
I was, and I wasn't even fucking there
I love how fantastically unifying this is. If you consider the tensions that have existed between some these countries and what some have done to others in only the last hundred years, it is such a massive accomplishment that they all stand here together, as one.
Stand With Might That’s the power of Les Miserables in any form In brings people together
People are the same in every country, only our governments divide us.
We need the World State my friend. Peace for humankind.
There are people alive today who remember when many of these countries fought in the most deadly war in human history against each other. It's amazing how far we've come in a human lifetime.

Denmark is exactly how I imagine Valjean
I kinda wished that France had a bigger part in this rendition bc the story took place in the country
but the concert just seemed absolutely breathtaking
I loved hearing Lea through the chorus of Valjeans, what a strong voice!
It must have been such a memorable night for all the performers, musicians, and audience members involved
It’s more the fact that all 17 valjeans shared 3 mics whereas quast and Lea had their own that’s why their voice carries through the union, however I agree., I love this song
I thought France would get a slightly bigger share as well, not gonna lie, but now I'm curious to watch the show!
Yes, he is most famous for being an actor. I today I learnt he also was Jean Valjean. Cool.
Kurt Ravn who was the Danish was a magnificent Jean Valjean, really amazing. Stig Rossen is another Danish actor who has been Jean Veljean, however on West End. There is a beautiful video online of them singing together. Really great Valjeans both of them.
Robert Marien who performed in French is actually Canadian - and has performed the role in New York, London and Paris, in both English and French.

Nobody is talking about Denmark! He was understated, but amazing! Listen to the vibrato on the first and last words. He sounds like an opera singer, very powerful! 🇩🇰 😀
I don't think french has ever sounded so cool lol
And I'm pretty sure George Bush's doppleganger is one of these guys :D
This will be the battle song we sing when we charge into battle against an alien invasion :P
+Merchant Ivory (filmstudent) or when those of us in the America's take up arms against a dictator who might bring the world into the brink of total chaos and world war aka, Mr. Trump. He then will hear millions of us singing, singing a song of VERY angry men, ones who will even now, join in the crusade, break down his potential barricades on liberty.
I was telling to myself the same during the whole video. We'd need to make up different lyrics, though, and i feel it wouldn't be the same without horses, so perhaps we should design mechanical ones.
More like Hillary getting elected. Trump is the most peaceful candidate up there. You have no understanding of the idea of "liberty" or what it meant for our ancestors.
Don't EVER tell me what I do or do not have gibson. In fact I spent two weeks biking on the coast of Normandy in June. I know EXACTLY what the understanding and history of liberty is. Just because I made a comment about a particular demagogue, don't EVER tell me I don't know this countries history or the history of our founding fathers and the like. IS THAT CLEAR?

Norway was my favorite
Austria, Netherlands and France were also amazing
Agree.
I can’t help but look at Mr. Hungary and just imagine that he’s slightly on his tip toes trying his best even though the mic is ever so slightly too high for him.
Japanese Valjean is the Iron Chef chairman.
Also, I love the look on his face when he finishes his line. It's like "Hmm, did I forget to unlock the back door when I left the house?"
the Japanese Valjeans is from iron chef.... whoa....
Yes! Chairman Kaga can sing!
I looked him up. He played the role of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, (1973) Thanks Apri for posting that. I would not have noticed...now I have learned something new.
I keep waiting to hear Allez Cuisine
He even voiced the Collector from Pokemon the Movie 2000 and Golbez in Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012.
Fuck yes and I *love* it!
I can still hear lea salonga from that ocean of valjeans hahahah she is awesome indeed
Agreed!
Just Lea Salonga and Phillip Quast :)
haha that's exactly what I thought! Slay Queen ♕♥
Mr. Quast has an *AMAZING* voice since he can be heard over everybody else. ;)
frickin' France pushed the UK Valjean like "MOVE! this is about MY history."
lollllllllllllllllllllll
Except that Robert Marien is Canadian.
Hector's Mommy Quebecois, that's pretty much the same.
Not only is it a different country, it is a different continent. Nope, not the same.
Hector's Mommy ffs Quebec was settled by the French so up until its joining of Canada, its the same history
I must say, Egill Olaffson’s (Iceland) small part in this is my absolute favorite! Just look at how proud and elegant he looks!!
It's truly special to hear this song in my language (Polish) with my country being only few days away from probably the most important election since 1989
kinda fucked up that the french guy had two really insignificant lines in a song from a musical about france adapted from a french musical about france adapted from a french book about france
As much as I love this performance, I agree with you. I think France and Australia should switch places.
+Sarah Rinehart You said French and France so many times I have the impulse to go surrender to somebody
+Richard Mickelson LOLOLOL
+Sarah Rinehart Actually, I think it's fair enough because those two lines are the title of the song in the French version of the musical.
+James Bovill fair enough point. x3
3:05 him and the irish guy were the most imposing singers!
+ElAshtonio the austrian guy definitely was the most intimidating singer. thats how id picture Valjean, after all he is supposed to be a huge brute
Workers of the World Unite!
Fun fact, Egill has appeared in two productions of Les Miserables here in Iceland.
And playing a different leading role each time, first Valjean, then Javert. Wonder how many actors/singers can say the same (suspect not that many)
I watched his other videos, he is amazing. It’s a shame they sandwiched him between the 2 guys with stronger parts. (Ireland and U.S.)
I thought he gave one of the most impressive bits, despite not understanding the language. I could totally see him in the role.
Egill's my favorite of the 17! I'm impressed by all the creative work he's done over the years.
Are there videos of his performance on RUclips? I'd love to watch him!
I really liked his voice.
This is what Civilization V would look like if there weren't wonders or Elefant Riders...
GOOFY GOOBER My bad, in german, we use f :D
GOOFY GOOBER Proud to be German and to call it an "Elefant". Though, of course, I love this version of the song due to it's various languages. We should keep this diversity since it's our culture and soul..
TheXxxisback Pretty sure there isn't an Australian civ..
Geekminer No shit. Here, have a cookie
+TheXxxisback you sir. you win best comment.
This is like the Olympic parade but for theatre
Damm! When all the voices came together... Blown away🤯
I really liked how each person and the language they are speaking influences sa singing and vocal techniques that enhances the "feelings" of the song
My favourite parts are the Japanese and the key change during the Irish part. So incredible!!!!
Japan wins the Vidal Sassoon award because everyone is balding.
hahaha
Name...
Agreed.
It’s all that testosterone required to support that ballsy singing.
Fair the dude wins by default of having hair
Ireland, Austria and Norway were my favourites
Sini Myllyniemi =_=
Sini Myllyniemi Same.
They were all fabulous !!!!!
Austria really looks like someone who could lift a cart off somebody in a pinch xD
Tusen takk fra Norge or Thank You from Norway
Icelandic Jean Valjean strangling that microphone is going to land him in prison again.
Wind was taken out of me when i heard all those tenors sing ‘one day more’
