Check out DopeThrone. I love Electric Wizard and Mastodon. But in my opinion DopeThrone do sludge metal better than anyone. I love the versatility of Mastodon and Electric Wizard (see Crack The Skye and Witchcult Today).

Mastodons song the beast is great
Sludge metal was big on the west coast with bands like The Melvins. I know it was big in the South too at the same time but you can't really call it a "southern sound".

I don't get why so many Mastodon fans dislike The Hunter. I think it's a great record.
It's honestly one of their best. They took the versatility of the previous two albums and then made them into great straightforward normal lengthed songs. The Hunter is totally great

Might have been different back when the album first came out but right now it's the album I hear people talk about the most other than Leviathan and Hushed and Grim, it's among my favorite albums of theirs

The burl is the knot that’s found in various trees - it’s almost like a cancer of trees. Within that burl are unique swirls or curls. A lot of people will cut those down and sell them to wood-makers, wood sculptors, and furniture makers because it’s got a unique design to it. And this is a true story which happens in the Pacific Northwest - a lot of people go out in the woods with chainsaws, they find these burls, they cut them down, they load their pickup trucks with these burls, take them in to town sell them to various wood-makers, take the money from that, purchase more meth, go back in the woods and continue that circle of insanity. So it’s based on a true story. People will steal your cars, steal copper…and people will go out there in the woods and steal burls. - "Troy"

I gotta give this band props not just for their music but also the excellent music videos. These days music videos, if they get made at all, are cheap and unoriginal and usually include some product placement for cell phones or tablets or some other bullshit. Among the trash comes Mastodon, with creative, comical, and interesting music videos, perfectly choreographed to the music. Just gotta thank them for not making crap in an industry that profits off of mostly crap.

sets the mood at a red light in a conservative town on a sunday afternoon... especially when played full blast from a droptop. Gotta keep the normies on their pointy little toes, you know.
True story here: I'm a forester. I was measuring trees yesterday, and I found some big old maple trees where somebody a few years ago had poached burls off of them and the tree had healed the scars partially over. The chainsaw marks were still visible. That's like the "P.S." to this song.
Mastodon manages to make not only awesome music but some of the best music vids and album covers. Masters of the visual as well as the auditory spectrums.
Completely agree, the leviathan cover art is utterly epic to me as well as many others.
I almost can hear Ozzy singing, and the rest of the Sabbath kickin asses with this riff. Congrats Mastodon, to keep alive the Sabbath feeling.

holy shit, I had no idea 10 years had passed. It almost seemed to me like The Hunter just came ou 2 or 3 years ago. Jesus Christ, I'm getting old.
Yeah it fucking is. I love the majority of their albums. I don't dislike any of them, but a few of them are just pretty good. The rest fantastic. They've evolved so much. One thing I would still like to see from them. Is a really heavy psychedelic album. Listen to the song Pendulous Skin off Blood Mountain, and Joseph Merrick off Leviathan. I would love an entire album that is styled like those two songs. I would want Brent to write all, or most of the songs for this album. It's really the only sound they haven't dedicated an album to yet. Just a handful of songs from a few albums. They are free to do whatever they like. And I will always support them. But I just love remission, blood mountain, and crack the skye so much (leviathan is also really fucking good). The Hunter and Once More Round the Sun are better than emperor of sand and hushed and grim, but those two most recent albums are still pretty good. They just don't really compare to the rest of their work. But hey, they are trying new things, and there are a few songs I love off their most recent albums. Regardless, I like that they continue to evolve. Even though I love remission and blood mountain. I wouldn't want that sound across all their albums. There is already plenty of that in their early works. Most mastodon fans are really chill. But there are some old school elitist chodes... that think everything past crack the skye sucks. And they dont know what they are talking about. Both The Hunter and Once More Round The Sun are proof that they can experiment and on a more modern prog metal sound, and still write albums that slap. So for any of you Mastodon elitists reading this, get bent xD. Been a long time fan myself, but can't stand the pretentious and gatekeeping one's among Mastodon's fanbase.
Especially so no metal bands this good have came out over the last 10 years.

Crack the Skye and The Hunter are two of my favorite albums of all time. And Mastodon is easily one of my favorite live bands ever.

Yeah I understand from a video I saw of Troy (lead singer) explaining what a curl of a burl is, and that lumberjacks would get into a vicious cycle of searching for the perfect burl, selling it in town, using the money to buy drugs... then repeat.
My friend just got back from going to the Vancouver film school and he said it was like a project by a group from the school. Not sure of the specific people involved though.

I am new to this band and all of the songs that I have heard have been really out there but in a really good way.
I got a religious friend, and I showed him this video saying "look how cool is this anti-drug campaign" and he believed it, until he saw the end scene. My god, that was hilarious.

Their other albums. I would suggest Once More Round the Sun and the Crack the Skye albums. Their earlier albums are amazing as well, but their heavier than their more current albums.
