Letterman and Shaefer had a clue. Shaefer had a say in suggesting and picking bands, and Dave had final say. With that knowledge think about some of the awesome bands they had on over the years. The ones they had on more than once, Dave loved. If you have never seen the At the Drive In performance that happened just after September 11, check it out. Pure fire.
+PeRuN the Riffmeister Quite sure he does. If you look at the musical guests on Letterman over the years you'll find that he has had some legitimately great non-mainsteam hard rock/metal bands on there before they crossed over. I'm not sure whether he did the music programming for the show himself, but he appears to have great taste and genuinely enjoy the musical guests on the show.
+redskullz124 It' s really hard for me to believe that. Maybe he' s collecting records, but I doubt he listens to them. Some of them- yes, that's for sure. But hard & heavy bands? I don't know, man...
I love how Brent Hinds is so full of life here! Their performance of Oblivion on Letterman was amazing but you can see Brent still looked a little shell-shocked after coming out of a coma
idk about the timeframe between recording and this performance but brent had a massive concussion while recording crack the skye so it could be a mix of stage freight and trying to get his faculties back which, from first hand experience, can take years
When I first heard any progressive metal song I thought what the fuck is this, I then started to get into gojira and then I found mastodon. Took me a while to get into them let alone give there music a chance but I'm so fucking glad I did. Hands down my favourite band ever and you can't get much talented than these guys and there super fucking cool dudes too. LION SLICER !!!!
Markodon I've noticed something like you have. Music that I LOVE on the first listen, doesn't often remain a favorite. Music that I need to hear 10-15 times to like, then another 15 to love is music that I will listen to my whole life. I've been putting effort into listening to harder, more progressive stuff for a couple years now. Haven't tried Gojira yet, but I will. I'm kinda getting the hang of Car Bomb right now. That's the most extreme stuff I've listened to. Sepultura needs a listen, Meshuggah, lot's of stuff. I've been a rock, blues, funk, R&B, roots, soul fan mostly.
+flugplatz21 I am the same way, and I always wondered if I was alone. I HATED mastodon when I first heard them off of guitar hero (you know you played it), same with Machine Head and a few others. After hearing these bands over and over, i started getting into them and now they are my favorites! I recently got into Mastodon and I can't get enough. I've all the guitar tab books for their album and spend my free time pouring over the pages and cranking the amp to 11!
ryjil xiao Cool to hear. Even though I'm a drummer, only played Gtr Hero twice. Decided to suck on real guitar, instead, then decided 6 strings was too many, now I mostly play a 4 string cigar box in open G. I can't afford enough guitars to have all the crazy tunings in modern music. Oh, well. Enjoy the tunes and have a good one!
Bill has the most gnarly growls out of all the members. Honestly; they're ball-rattling. I think they only allow him to vocalise during a couple of songs due to a fear born out of knowing that any prolonged exposure to such intense growls will probably lead to an unpleasant death.
I'm so happy that Brent got his singing up to speed with the others. And as much as I think this isn't the best song to showcase them, this fucking rockss. Can't wait to see the other stuff live.
Love this song.First album I got was "Blood Mountain, and they just go from strength to strength. This song's nice and meaty sounding, but also catchy enough for non-metal fans to appreciate.
i definitely respect the letterman show because they will have rock and roll hall of fame-bound metal bands like mastodon on his show. i true tip of the hat to your show sir.
regardless of our opinions...the band looks like it's having a blast and enjoying a new-found groove. cool to see them actually smiling. bravo for not standing still...great musicians on a great musical path.
Mastodon, loud headphones, full album from start to finish, & trail run/gym/marijuana effects+lying in darkness before is one of my top 3 favorite activities. Crack the Skye & Leviathan have been my favorite although I haven't even got to 5 lol. Still on repeat with the ones I kinda know.
this is just kick ass.thanks dave for playing real rock bands on your show.i want to see more.rock-n-roll is going to take over again so hang on everybody.its about to get crazy up in here>.......Dain
That was one Tight performance!!! Mastodons new album is killer!! One of the best albums of 2011 So get yourself out there and get yourself a copy MASTODON FTW!!!
@ShiningSpear I saw them live at the soundwave festival last week and dude, their vocals have vastly improved since the crack the skye days, they're an amazing live band
So let me get this straight. We have Grizzly Adams on lead guitar, Jesus on bass, Joe Dirt on rhythm guitar, and the drummer is tripping balls on LSD 99.99999% of the time. This is why I love these guys.
The vocals are SICK! I was afraid the vocals might not be good for their upcoming tour but after seeing this I have faith. The Hunter rules. I hope they play the whole album live.
I've always correlated this album with Skyrim. The featured ad for this video is the Dawnguard DLC. Looks like I'm not the only nerd who loves The Hunter...
I like late shows because they sometimes have the most obscure bands you might have never heard of otherwise, and also they have cool metal bands on from time to time. I think Letterman was the first time I heard The Mars Volta. Hope they keep it up.
They should have played 'Dry Bone Valley'. I love the whole album, though. It took a couple listens because everyone has expectations when an album comes out from a band they love, but Mastodon delivered again.
Wrong. The guitarist on our left with the flying V is using an orange head through an orange head. The Marshall head is not even turned on (no red pilot light). The bassist is playing through an Ampeg amp and cabinet. Th remaining guitarist, to our right, is playing a Marshall head through an Orange cab, with possibly a Marshall cab in the stack as well. Cheers!
I honestly wouldn't expect him to listen to all of the bands that come on his show, but I think it's cool that he puts a wide spread of acts and not just popstars. I do know that he has said his favorite band is Foo Fighters so maybe he has listened to Mastodon a bit.
I need to start watching David Letterman more often. It's surprising that any metal band in my opinion would be on a talk show. Of course Curl of the Burl is the most 'pop' sounding song on that album, but wow. If Mastodon gets to play on shows like this...I wonder of Opeth would ever get asked to play :3
This song is ten times better live, and I cant figure out why. I try to listen to the album version but it just doesn't do it justice, I keep watching this video over and over again.
You know after the cameras were off Letterman was like "that shit was fucking BRUTAL! !!!" And head butted someone.
turbofister5000 yeah, I'm fucking sure. Hahaha
I wouldn't doubt it if he really did say it like that. David Letterman has a foul mouth.
Probably so, but I'm more curious about Paul Schaefer's musical reaction to Mastodon.
@@0clockedin0
Paul is in charge of the music side of The Late Show with DL

David Latterman is a lucky guy getting all those records.
+Christian charles You really think he listens to those records that they gave him? I highly doubt it.

@@perunlowtuned the dude is a comedian. He is an entertainment enigma, he is probably way more progressive than you think
@@redskullz1249 this is true.
I feel like Curl of the Burl is the song that every aspiring garage band wants to make
Hey Kevin what the fuck is up dude 😎

+Markodon A Gojira reference on the front page of a Letterman video.
This was a good day after all.
Bill’s chunky riff is one of my favorites.
I think Brent wrote it
@@mastod0n1 Bill’s playing it though
They've got the "that's just the weight of the world" harmony down perfectly. Sounds awesome.
Gotta love brents little dance ^^
Just wanna point out that there stands "hi mom" on Bill's guitar
So sad
look at that old man holding that mastadon record
BRENT IS SINGING PROPERLY? and isnt high or drunk or sounding like a strangled goat?!?!?! awesome!
Bill has the most gnarly growls out of all the members. Honestly; they're ball-rattling.

Bill is the man. and his guitar playing on the new Primate album is unbelievable.. probably my AOTY 2012
That was badass!!
Amazing album
Saw these guys a week ago in London... UN FUCKING BELIEVABLE. 10/10. Best band around at the moment
SethHesio Cradle of filth are doing far better than these guys.
At least they can play live with no fuck ups.
Cracking song, cracking band.
They sound so damn good
This song has such a badass groove its nice to see em shake their shit and have fun fuck yeah!
They have improved their live vocals! I love Brent's dance at 1:22 XD
Amazing to see Anthony Worrall Thomson play guitar and sing like that!
when a show is on that many times a week... you can probably get some damn good bands like this!
Gotta love Letterman for having such a bad ass band on. This song rules!
That Silverburst V is orgasmic both looking and sounding
This was an amazing performance!!
Brent´s dance is awesome!!!
The people in this crowd are so lucky! can't wait to see them roll through on the mayhem tour
I really didn't care for the hunter much the first time I listened to it, but after a few more listens, I've really fallen in love with the album.
Is Brett dancing???? Hahahahahahahaha! This new album is awesome. Thank you Mastodon!
The run!
Much better than their first letterman performance
