This series is great. Not many realize that this is not simply a song analysis but a production seminar. Many of the details you hear that make this and other songs great do not originate from the band itself, but from the producer. So if you listen to all the nuances Rick points out on every song, you will learn more about stuff you only really learn in the studio environment. Great job!
@@cluff8652 Well , to be honest the only thing that gravitates me (Hehe see what did there?) to that song is the opening riff, that open C after the first 6 notes is HEAVY, but tbh people are citing that song being one of the best works mastodon has ever done, but I mean only in "crack the skye" which is the album that oblivion debuted in, there are 4 songs that come to mind that are much stronger than Oblivion, which are 'The Czar', 'Crack the Skye', 'Divinations' and 'The Last Baron', and this is only in one album, but then again Mastodon's catalogue is so diverse that different people can enjoy Mastodon for completely different reasons so I respect your oppinion, just leaving mine here aswell!
I have no doubt someone’s said this already, Rick (or you’ve figured it out by now), but those verse vocals at 10:02 are Brent. You can tell because it sounds like the Drunken Master trying to pass a kidney stone.
Not my favourite album (mine is Blood Mountain), but The Hunter is better than Crack the Skye and Leviathan, and million times superior to the last two albums. The reason why I did not like it that much at first was the production, then it has slowly grown on me
To me Mastodon's weak point has always been the vocals. Most of the time they do the job but I never told myself "wow what a great vocal performance", as opposed to say, their drums or their guitars. And that's one of the main reasons I don't like The Hunter a lot : it's one of their most vocal-oriented records. Also the complex song structures and the creative riffs were toned down quite a bit on this one. So that's why, as an early Mastodon fan, who loved their progressive instrumentation and didn't care a lot for their vocals, I don't find a lot to enjoy on The Hunter. I would never say it's a bad album though, to me it's just not up to Mastodon's best (Leviathan, Crack The Skye).
I would probably say Blood Mountain is my second to these two. For whatever reason Leviathan always kind of fell flat for me. It just kind of drags along, a lot of the riffs and melodies don’t stand out to me at all (Blood and Thunder is one of the best rock/metal songs ever though). Crack The Sky is great but I can’t tolerate the production. It’s too cloudy and cluttered. I actually love The Hunter from a production standpoint. Also, The Hunter has their best hooks and catchy elements, I feel it’s their most concise album from a song writing standpoint.
@Jeffrey Dittburner I love Mastodon and love Brann's drumming but like someone stated above everyone in that band contributes to their sound and without any one they would be a completely different band and would seem like something was missing.
David DiMuzio listen to Can. Jaki Leibezeit is one of the best to ever get behind the kit. Vitamin C, Halleluwah and Spoon are great. He basically invented the break beat
BTW, would love to see a “What makes songs sound dated”. Always wanted to know.. like mic choices, drum setup, amps + pickups of the time, etc. I always wondered what a band like Led Zeppelin would sound like in a modern studio with modern instruments.
I like this idea. There are a billion 80s songs with way too much chorus on the guitar. Also dated is not always bad, it just more or less defines a time period by following certain trends.
As busy as some of their songs are, the thing that always holds a Mastodon song together is just how unbelievably smooth Brann's drumming is. Of all the drummer's I'm into, he has this special ability to flow all the way up and down his kit at full tilt without ever sounding like he's sweating. It's so impressive when you see him live.
The Hunter took me a lot longer to come around to, I think it's because I had just discovered them and was utterly enamored with CTS which is hard to follow no matter which album. Every one of their albums seems like an enormous onion with layers that keep coming through years after the first one is peeled off. H&G is best consumed with psilocybin, imo : )
The Hunter and this song in particular are such highlights in their catalog. A lot of fans found it too commercial but the songwriting and production are absolutely amazing.
The hunter is amazing and rightfully received great reviews from music critics . Just got flak for not being as heavy as past stuff but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t great, never deserved the hate it got

Definitely worth checking out if you get the chance. Brann's drumming was very unique and head spinning. Still is! Great guys. Super proud of their success. I got here by accident, but man.... Am I glad for that. Mastodon is one of my favorite bands and now I know why I'm so fond of their stuff. And I really love the way Mr. Beato took everything apart while showing his obvious appreciation of this band and their music. This man clearly knows what he is talking about and the way he shares this with others earns my deepest respect. Thank you very much for this highly instructive and most entertaining video. Will definitely visit this channel again.
Mastodon kicks so much ass! Sultan's Curse is amazing but Crack The Skye to me is the best thing they've ever done and one of the best albums of all time. I'd love to hear you break down something like Divinations somewhere down the road -- Brent's guitar solo is sooooo good!
rick is a master at breakinv things down and his enthusiasm is contagious, i do love mastodon so much but even with bands im not as keen on, he still gets me to appreciate the songs
i think there’s a lot of beautiful, yet brutal ambience on Remission, between the bits where they let loose their hardcore roots. Thus why it’s my favourite, there’s space and thoughtfulness, but there’s also incredible tightness and technical prowess. Not to disregard the other records, Blood Mountain is tied first place, but i think now that Mastodon have kinda eschewed a lot of what fuelled them during Remission for something less aggressive, yet warm, it’s nice to look back and be proud.
Mastodons music is like listening to an action packed movie soundtrack where anything could happen…. Just holds your attention to all these shiny sparkly parts that are deeper than any other metal band…. Huge opus rock!!
This got me real excited, Stargasm is my favourite song ever created due to all the layers, it's a song that keeps you discovering new elements everytime you listen, a true masterpiece of modern metal music
Man, after listening to that I really wish they left a portion of the song and just let those drums and bass ride for a little while. Sound fantastic. I don't think they highlight just how good of a drummer Brann is sometimes.
In the old records (Remission, Leviathan, Blood mountain), Brann had more space to do crazy fills and quirky timings! His style and, that of Mastodon in general, changed in a kind of drastic way with Crack the skye and the following records. I like both styles but prefer the old one. More dislocked, more dissonant and more "contemporary art" to me :)
So glad you finally did a video on a Mastodon song! There are SO MANY great Mastodon songs you could have picked, and I was a bit surprised it was Stargasm. But in the end I'm glad it was. Great song. Thanks, Rick!
Man, is there anything better than getting into a band for the first time, only to find that Rick already has a video about one of their songs? [chef's kiss]
Bit of a long shot as they're an unsung hero: Failure have released their new album today, and it's another absolute blinder (So, Rick STRIKE NOW!!!). If you're not familiar then Fantastic Planet is one of those albums from 20 years ago that people are finally going "Oh yeah, this album Marshalsea's been yanging on about, hey he was right all along". So, either "STUCK ON YOU" or one of my personal favourite songs ever "ANOTHER SPACE SONG". Also, Ken Andrews always seems a particularly nice chap in interviews, so drag him on the show. ;)
Yeah people are just now catching on. I think the tour with tool 4 years ago did that. I loved Failure in the 90s, another space song is one of my favorites too.
Great !!! As Always, I Very Much Enjoy these”What Makes this Song Great” series. I’ll admit, I never listened to Mastadon, even though I’ve seen countless articles in magazines on them. You’ve opened my ears. I’m now a Fan
I remember seeing an interview with Brann where he said when he was first learning drums, he couldn't find any bass players to groove with so he designed his style more by mimicking guitars and leads. My all time favorite drummer.
Im an Atlanta native , watched this band from day one... Good job Rick this band is so misunderstood by alot of people ..They write amazing songs with amazing structure and vocals. Brents strange vocal with Troy and Braun make it so dynamic.. They think outside the square box of rock 😁 Mastodon rocks period!
Lamb Of God, please??!!! 'Descending', 'Ruin', 'Walk With Me In Hell', '512' ... you gotta do a LOG track, Rick! BTW, I love what songs you choose to dissect, very diverse and excellent taste. Killer show, man!
My absolite favourite band ever! BTW that's Brent the guitarist singing in the verse, than the chorus is sang by Brann the drummer, along with Brent's harmony.
It’s amazing that Braun can be such a busy drummer but the hits never get lost in the mix . You hear every drum note and the beat never gets drowned out. He does love hit fills though lol
You made me appreciate Mastadon which I never thought I would. Brann's drums... We were making the same noises the whole time listening to his parts solo'd. Truly something special!
I can imagine Rick front row at a Mastodon concert totally losing it. Clearly he's a big fan, especially of Dailor's drumming. The number of "whoooo!!" and "smokin'!" in this video alone. 😂
He uses extremely simplistic and fundemental tones and notes. So much so, it goes unnoticed midst of the band's ongoing craziness at times. He's a great bass player actually.
I've always considered this record to be my favorite tom sound on tape. And yet, when you hear the track soloed, it sounds so fragile. It is so weird how that sits in the mix to be so powerful and punchy.
Maybe a dumb idea, but how about a “what makes this instrument great” series? A particular guitar, bass, keyboard.. etc that you, or someone else owns.
Great analysis as always. I thought you would like them. Saw them last year in U.K. One of the best live bands you will ever hear. What a drummer. After the show Bran, though exhausted, spent five minutes talking and joking with the crowd and thanked us for coming. Our pleasure!
yes thank you Rick ! Amazing band and I'd love if youd take a look to the Dillinger escape plan one day they made ire works, miss machine, option paralysis which in my opinion are masterpieces of modern metal
That intro riff man. That alone encapsulates the title Stargasm perfectly. And that "You're on fire" part just takes it home. This and Sleeping Giant really bring out an immense feeling of isolation, helplessness, longing and desperation greatly.
I didn't even realize the song had all these atmospheric bits in it, it sounds so natural and amazing. This video series is just a great good old educational time.

@@juggernautone577 +100000 best album of the new millennium. I've played it over and over nonstop for the near decade since I bought it.
Crack the Skye is an extraordinary record. Imagine Classic Yes/Genesis Prog through the prism of aggressive 21st century metal.
@@jeff7775 Definitely a fan of Genesis and yes. Cd ordered 👍
Stargasm gives me an eargasm. That song, that album is INSANE! Great break down Rick!
I wish you had the time to do this for every single Mastodon song. I'd watch all of the videos. Great job.
Man that chord resolution to end the song is just SO SATISFYING
Brann Dailor's fills are always a treat, his rolls are crazy
The fucking best and you know it lol
Watching him live is like he’s doing a drum solo the entire show. I was blown away.
got into Mastodon over the last year, but you hear something new every time you listen to them. such awesome music
Love your videos !! Can you do any of Opeth's songs ?
yes please, or btbam
Ghost of perdition alone would take 4 hours to break down. I’d watch it though !
Blackwater park
Bleak or Dirge for november
Probably the only band that I could listen to just the bass and drums and would still find it absolutely listenable.
i think i watched this video more than i listened to the song. just can't get enough of listening the isolated drum groove with the base...
One of my fav bands. Wasnt expecting this song but a Nice surprise
It simply amazes me how Rick works this all out.
@@vysrom4440 Yep, Tool tour in the 90s was what introduced me to them. I think a few got into them through APC "Nurse Who Loved Me".
Definitely agree with this, I'd love to see some Failure coverage and I've seen next to nothing about any of their work or even their new album.
@@zucchinisurprise6347Monster and In The Future are both brilliant. Counterfeit Sky, watch just for the video as well.
I'd never heard Mastodon before but I am thoroughly intrigued by this breakdown of their song, love the series...
Yes!!! The Hunter is my favorite Mastodon record
You always find ways to make me like songs that I have already liked even more, thank you.
Probably unlikely to happen but an Intronaut analysis would be amazing. Rick would find a lot to appreciate in anything off their last 2 records
Two words: DIGITAL GERRYMANDERING
@@UncleGranda hell yeah, mind blowing
Yes please!
So true! Great musicianship!
Steps! That riff is amazing.
I love the genius of the Beato channel... NO ONE.. even...comes... close. Thanks Rick!!
Extremely unexpected episode but thank you so much Mr. Beato Francisco
Im an Atlanta native , watched this band from day one... Good job Rick this band is so misunderstood by alot of people ..They write amazing songs with amazing structure and vocals. Brents strange vocal with Troy and Braun make it so dynamic.. They think outside the square box of rock 😁 Mastodon rocks period!
love this track. also, i think it’s time for one on Meshuggah. 😉
I'm glad I'm not the only one constantly geeking out over Brann's absurdly good drum work
Lamb Of God, please??!!! 'Descending', 'Ruin', 'Walk With Me In Hell', '512' ... you gotta do a LOG track, Rick! BTW, I love what songs you choose to dissect, very diverse and excellent taste. Killer show, man!
I love watching Rick love it.
I don't wanna learn from somebody who doesn't still love it.
As much as Brann loves his snare, i'm not surprised he nailed those ghost notes. And when he's not going double bass, his singles hit like a truck lol
My absolite favourite band ever!
BTW that's Brent the guitarist singing in the verse, than the chorus is sang by Brann the drummer, along with Brent's harmony.
Saw them this summer in kansas city with primus. Made me kind of sad cuz noone really made their way to their seats until after mastodons set was done
It’s amazing that Braun can be such a busy drummer but the hits never get lost in the mix . You hear every drum note and the beat never gets drowned out.
He does love hit fills though lol
And he is great to the fans....after shows always so sincerely appreciative
That drum hook with the ghost notes reminds me of Jimmy Chamberlin on Glass and the Ghost Children
Another incredible drummer. Been through 'issues', but hits them skins like few ever have.
You made me appreciate Mastadon which I never thought I would. Brann's drums... We were making the same noises the whole time listening to his parts solo'd. Truly something special!
Love your channel Rick!
Please consider doing "The Drapery Falls" by Opeth, and "Quintessence" by Mastodon... Really good songs!!
Man, I really enjoyed this video. It's cool to see someone get as excited about Mastodon's composition as I do.
I can imagine Rick front row at a Mastodon concert totally losing it. Clearly he's a big fan, especially of Dailor's drumming. The number of "whoooo!!" and "smokin'!" in this video alone. 😂
Great to see the appreciation of Brann’s drumming. He really is a distinct level above most others. Phenomenal grooves!
THEY LIVE NEAR YOU, BRING THEM IN FOR AN INTERVIEW OR JAM!!!!
Idan Liberman Not sure it works that way.
3:50 "the bass enters as well" 😱😱😱 holy cow I don't think I ever fully appreciated how heavy Troy's sound really is...
Easily one of my favorite songs by them. Breaking down the mix just makes one appreciate it more!
That bass tone is amazing. It sounds like darkness lurking below the surface of the beautiful sadness that is the guitars.
For "what makes this song 50" you sould talk about a song you've produced
Me 2
The thing that gets me about the blockers, I'm now going to listen to Mastodon because I've never listened to them before. Thanks Rick.
Maybe a dumb idea, but how about a “what makes this instrument great” series? A particular guitar, bass, keyboard.. etc that you, or someone else owns.
Sounds interesting to me!
And calculating infinity and the ep with Mike Patton in their discography are also great
That intro riff man. That alone encapsulates the title Stargasm perfectly. And that "You're on fire" part just takes it home. This and Sleeping Giant really bring out an immense feeling of isolation, helplessness, longing and desperation greatly.
Great video, you'd love BTBAM and Opeth both would be incredible for this video series
I didn't even realize the song had all these atmospheric bits in it, it sounds so natural and amazing. This video series is just a great good old educational time.
