Great video, I look forward to seeing more on your channel and trying this out for myself. thanks for the info. Just a quick question, can you use honey in a balm?
Hi John, I don't see why not. Honey doesn't spoil, it's full of vitamins and antioxidants that are beneficial for your hair. There is a possibility of crystalization and discoloration over time. However, it is unlikely after it is mixed with oils and butters and will be used long before it would age to the point of crystalization. It might also add a little tack for better control. Give it a try and let me know how it turns out.
Nice video! I never thought about using two butters. Gotta try that! Refined shea butter does not have much odor, BUT raw shea butter smells like roasted nutty crayons. You should try using grams instead of ounces. It's way more precise and helps keep a consistent product in the long run. Question, do you ever have issues with your balms being grainy? I did in the past, I learned that it all about temperature and the cooling phase.
Gnome Beard Thanks. I've never used weight, but it's only for me and the results seem pretty consistent. The 1st time I made balm it was a little gritty, I had put in in the fridge to solidify. Since then I only let it solidify at room temp. All my balms now come out smooth as silk.
The gritty or grainy issue comes from the Shea butter being over heated. The way I avoid this is to NOT put it in with the bee's wax and mango when melting on the stove. (I go ahead and add my carrier oils in while gently melting the wax and butters). Get them melted down first, take off the heat for a few minutes and then add the Shea butter. Let the temp of the bee's wax and mango butter melt the Shea butter and then add your essential oils and TA DA!! ; ) No grit or graininess... Great video! Have an awesome day! Hugs from Texas!! : )

58gennaro Hi, thanks for watching. You don't need to add any scented oils, you can make the balm using only one butter, wax, and one carrier oil if you'd like. I'd recommend Shea butter, Jojoba oil, and beeswax. If you are looking to keep cost down, grapeseed oil is cheap and can be used instead of jojoba. You can find it in most grocery stores.
Hi Nabeel, I don't know the properties of Buffalo butter. Anything with animal fat would probably go bad very quickly, so I would not recommend using it. Thanks for watching.
Greetings from Costa Rica. I will try to make this for a friend but I have a couple of questions. I cannot find the jamaican black castor oil, can I use regular castor oil instead? I read I can use grapeseed oil instead of the jojoba oil, is it the same amount of grapeseed oil? Thank you very much!
Hi Marianela, yes you can substitute oils for the ones you prefer, the overall recipe stays the same. I found my oils at Walgreens and CVS, but if you don't have those stores in Costa Rica you can always order from the internet (i.e. Amazon). Good luck, I hope your friend enjoys your thoughtful gift.
Hi Bashar, carrier oils are the base oils which provide the benefits to your beard and skin. Essential oils are for scenting the product and are diluted in the carrier oil base. Essential oils are typically 3-5 % of the total solution. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
@@BasharAcademy I'm not familiar with jaitoon oil. You can use olive oil but I would not recommend it alone, it is greasy and its natural odor may interfere with your scent oils. It has good properties for hair and skin but I would mix it with a lighter carrier like almond, grapeseed or avocado which can be purchased cheaply at most grocery stores. Hope that helps.

I used raw unrefined shea butter (bought at Walmart). Food grade shea butter is refined to remove impurities. You should be able to use it for making balm, just ensure that the only ingredient on the label is pure refined shea butter and nothing else. I hope that helps.
I have found that honest Amish heavy duty beard balm has the perfect consistency for me. It’s so soft and literally almost like butter. Would you say this is similar? A tad more firm? A tad more soft?
My Balm recipe is more firm than honest amish, I love honest amish but my course grey beard needs a little more control. If you like a softer/lighter hold, try replacing the mango butter with refined coconut oil. You can do unrefined if you don't mind the coconut smell.
Blazing Beards I love the consistency of honest Amish but the longer my beard is getting the more curly it gets. So I’m gonna have to start needing something a little more firm I feel. This recipe sounds like it’s something I should play with

Thanks for the warning Kay, I'll keep it in mind, I'm really not all that concerned though seeing that so many balms, butters, shampoos, conditioners, and thousands of other products which use essential oils come in plastic containers. That said, I'll try to use glass or metal tins in the future, better safe than sorry right.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 yeah it's called accumulative toxins it builds over time u may not see results from any one certain thing 5 to 10 years down the road it will not be a immediate reaction and most of the time the doctor if connected with the A.M.A will not connect the dots but if we practiced old medicine and got the proper extensive blood work done we would see the results and it would be shocking.....I started on my venture almost 10 yrs ago it changed my life especially the process of how I do things and ingredients I use.....but yeah hope that will help ya
So what are you suggesting that for the containers use either the metal tins like we get hair wax in or glass containers similar to the ones in the video (just glass)?
Just in my opinion, you cannot get away from using plastics in this day and age. Food, shampoos, conditioners, water, cosmetics, etc, and many beard company products come in plastic containers. Unless you are going to completely eliminate plastics from your life, removing it from just your beard balm containers wont make much difference to the toxicity levels you're getting from everything else. You'd probably have to use 500 lbs. of beard balm from plastic containers, that have been sitting in those containers for years, every day for 10 years before you would notice. If you have glass containers or metal tins, that is preferable,, but don't sweat it if you only have plastic containers. Again that's just my opinion.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 I personally eliminate all I can every bit helps especially with all other contaminates in our lives every bit helps .it's all a small step in the right direction...most people don't care bcause they haven't felt with cancer (a result)from contaminates in food ,water ,air
How long does your scent last for your homemade balms and oils? I’m finding with the sandalwood, peppermint and vanilla that none of them are that strong at all and I’m putting in 30 drops per 1ml Makes me wonder if companies are using more fragrance oils or if I’m doing something wrong here or if the scents I have are similar to citrus and just don’t last long?
Blazing Beards yea all the scents from actual companies I get last 3-6 hours and some way longer than that. With 30 drops per 1oz I’m hardly smelling it at all as soon as I apply the oil. I just learned all about top notes, bass notes etc So there’s something I’m doing or I need better essential oils and or better carrier oil brands
@@cloud_monkey422 sometime I find that certain scents counteract each other, like when I mix lemon and peppermint it has no scent. Sandlewood is a strong scent, it may be you have old or low quality oil. Carrier oil should not really impact it.
Blazing Beards I’m guessing it’s low quality EO because I did not want to wait til the others shipped so I got some from hobby lobby just to test and experiment. The theory was to use cheap stuff to experiment since no one gets lucky the first try and by the time the better EO got here I maybe would be decent and would have to only work on finding a scent profile. I’m starting to see why ppl say you get what you pay for lol but man this vanilla smells amazing lol cheap or not
Question about coconut oil (maybe you know since I can’t seem to find it online lol) What’s the difference between the liquid form and the butter other than textures. Do they both have the same benefits or does one have a thing or two the other doesn’t? Are they the same but just produced differently so they store differently? I maybe putting coconut oil (liquid form obviously lol) in my diy beard oil, i dont know yet. It really depends on how oily it is and I’ll get to that in a second lol Anyways, I was curious because I may put coconut oil solid in my balm and coconut oil in liquid form in the balm as well but wasn’t sure if I could just skip it and only add the solid form. Anyways I bought some what I feel are ok starters to mess with Beeswax, Shea butter, coconut butter Jojoba (of course lol) grape seed, hemp seed, coconut, and black castor oil (wanting to get sweet almond and vitamin E and argon as well) Anyways, after buying them, I’m rubbing a tad on my hands to see what is the most oily and trying to decide if I want to even use the really oily ones or not. I have a black beard so even the light makes mine shine lol. But the benefits of Jamaican black castor oil maybe worth it and I’ll just have to add a tiny bit lol Sorry rambling, just curious about the coconut oils and the benefits if they are same or possibly diff
Hi Dan, the liquid form of coconut oil has removed some lauric acids(fatty acids) mainly Myristic and palmitic are the two main fatty acids that are removed during the refinement process for liquid coconut oil. The two are known for having bactericidal and antifungal properties, killing harmful bacteria, viruses and fungus. Liquid coconut loses some or all of its scent when it is refined. I personally don't care for coconut oil and have stopped using it after my 1st batch of balm, I replaced it with mango butter which is much less greasy and no odor. You really don't need vitamin e oil, as the other oils you mentioned are very rich in vitamin e to start with. Also, many of the vitamin e oils sold in stores and in many beard oils are synthetically made. Hope this helps.
Blazing Beards thank you and I have done a ton of research since my comment lol I mean from shelf life to the comedogencity scale to rate of absorption etc haha And I wanted to purchase those because I don’t know what I’m going to use or not use etc (but now have a much better understanding haha) I was just curious if day I did use coconut oil in my balm, if it would be pointless to add fractionated coconut oil also. I have decided that my balm should be beeswax, mango butter and possibly Shea butter. (That’s where the experimenting will come lol)
Blazing Beards I prefer more of a butter type balm but am at the point to where I need more hold lol I dont know yet haha I’m so indecisive lol But.....I do know that I’m looking for the least pore clogging, and least greasy as possible because as mentioned earlier the slightest things make my beard look greasy. Which I think I can figure those out quick my main problem is math and percentages haha I struggle with those lol
@@cloud_monkey422 1 tbl spoon beeswax, 1 tbl spoon shea butter, 1 tbl mango butter, 15 ml carrier oil (1 tbl spoon), 60 drops of essential oil. No math required. If your beard is looking greasy, try using less.
The total butter to beeswax ratio remains the same if you want to follow my recipe. If you take out one tablespoon of mango butter, replace it with the butter you are using. The ratios are really a personal preference, if you prefer a firmer/stronger hold, increase the beeswax, if you want more of a conditioning balm, reduce the beeswax.
That’s weird if Walmart sells those blue containers for medications when traveling because it’s illegal to carry a prescription without its label or bottle. Basically it’s illegal to carry pills a few at a time in anything other than the bottle it came in lol Especially now days with the opiate epidemic in the USA. But great video buddy. @@rexestrada310 the liquid used in plastic sucks "stuff" from the plastic bottles/containers. Not all containers are bpa free, for instance. Look up bpa in Google 👍
Way way way too many ingredients. It doesn’t have to be nearly this involved. One carrier oil like jojoba and one or two essential oils like cedarwood and rosemary. That’s all you really need. Change the essential oils to whatever scent pleases you.
If that's the way you like it, then that's the way you should make it. Of course you can use only one carrier oil, 1 butter, and wax, but you will miss out on the properties different oils and butters provide. Each carrier oil and butter in this recipe has been selected for the specific skin and hair benefits or consistency they provide, as to the essential oils, I love the scent this mix provides.
Exactly right, different carriers have different properties, like anti fungal, sun protection, anti bacterial, moisturizing, etc. You can use just one, but you'd not receive all the benefits.

You can find it in most grocery stores.
i use a mix of jojoba, argan and avacado as a beard oil, so have those on hand. thanks for the reply.
can we use buffalo butter in beard balm?
Hi Nabeel, I don't know the properties of Buffalo butter. Anything with animal fat would probably go bad very quickly, so I would not recommend using it. Thanks for watching.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 Thanks it will helps :)

WHAT IS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CARRIER OIL AND ESSENTIAL OIL
Hi Bashar, carrier oils are the base oils which provide the benefits to your beard and skin. Essential oils are for scenting the product and are diluted in the carrier oil base. Essential oils are typically 3-5 % of the total solution. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 Thank you sir. May I use olive oil or jaitoon oil as carrier oil?
@@BasharAcademy I'm not familiar with jaitoon oil. You can use olive oil but I would not recommend it alone, it is greasy and its natural odor may interfere with your scent oils. It has good properties for hair and skin but I would mix it with a lighter carrier like almond, grapeseed or avocado which can be purchased cheaply at most grocery stores. Hope that helps.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 You are a good man. Thanks again sir.
All these beard products we have now is making beard growers as tutti fruiti as a gym bodied San Francisco Metrosexual. I applaud those that make their oil beard balms oils and butters. I just use coconut oil spiced with vanilla and almond oil. My beard looks so good, that little kids stare at me like I'm Santa Claus.
I never considered smelling and looking good for my lady to be tutti fruiti, I just enjoy taking good care of my beard and sharing knowledge with others. It's a fun hobby. I think I'll try your recipe too. Thanks for watching and sharing your method.

On the Shea butter is it the edible kind? I did not know that there was different kind until I went to get some at the natural food store.
This recipe sounds like it’s something I should play with
I still have a few questions haha
Anyways I started off just wanting to make simple mustache wax until my stache gets longer but realized I’ll have a bunch of stuff left over and most of it is also in beard oil and beard balm so why not make it all haha
But one question that comes to mind is there a diff when using coconut oil that is oil and coconut oil that is more like cooking lard?
Can I a list of the ingredients on making some home made beard oil

I found it for you, Here is the recipe:8 ml - sweet almond oil8 ml - golden jojoba oil5 ml - avocado oil5 ml - argan oil3 ml - Jamaican black castor seed oil18-30 drops of essential oils depending on strength and fragrance preferences.
What about using GRASS FED BUTTER
Will contaminate oils when u put balm on it eventually reaches the blood stream and can definitely cause cancer or other health problems )(liver) or (kidney)probs just something to consider

I’m finding with the sandalwood, peppermint and vanilla that none of them are that strong at all and I’m putting in 30 drops per 1ml
Makes me wonder if companies are using more fragrance oils or if I’m doing something wrong here or if the scents I have are similar to citrus and just don’t last long?
Also my first batch of both balm and oil are horrible lol
Scents usually last 3 to 4 hours at 30 drops per oz. Peppermint is a top note and fades within an hour.
Blazing Beards yea all the scents from actual companies I get last 3-6 hours and some way longer than that.
With 30 drops per 1oz I’m hardly smelling it at all as soon as I apply the oil.
I just learned all about top notes, bass notes etc
So there’s something I’m doing or I need better essential oils and or better carrier oil brands
I’m starting to see why ppl say you get what you pay for lol but man this vanilla smells amazing lol cheap or not
Where is the written recipe
It's in the video description drop down.
Question about coconut oil (maybe you know since I can’t seem to find it online lol)
What’s the difference between the liquid form and the butter other than textures.
Do they both have the same benefits or does one have a thing or two the other doesn’t?
Are they the same but just produced differently so they store differently?
I maybe putting coconut oil (liquid form obviously lol) in my diy beard oil, i dont know yet. It really depends on how oily it is and I’ll get to that in a second lol
Anyways, I was curious because I may put coconut oil solid in my balm and coconut oil in liquid form in the balm as well but wasn’t sure if I could just skip it and only add the solid form.
Anyways I bought some what I feel are ok starters to mess with
Beeswax, Shea butter, coconut butter
Jojoba (of course lol) grape seed, hemp seed, coconut, and black castor oil (wanting to get sweet almond and vitamin E and argon as well)
Anyways, after buying them, I’m rubbing a tad on my hands to see what is the most oily and trying to decide if I want to even use the really oily ones or not.
I have a black beard so even the light makes mine shine lol.
But the benefits of Jamaican black castor oil maybe worth it and I’ll just have to add a tiny bit lol
Sorry rambling, just curious about the coconut oils and the benefits if they are same or possibly diff
Blazing Beards thank you and I have done a ton of research since my comment lol
I mean from shelf life to the comedogencity scale to rate of absorption etc haha
And I wanted to purchase those because I don’t know what I’m going to use or not use etc (but now have a much better understanding haha)
I was just curious if day I did use coconut oil in my balm, if it would be pointless to add fractionated coconut oil also.
I have decided that my balm should be beeswax, mango butter and possibly Shea butter. (That’s where the experimenting will come lol)
@@cloud_monkey422 good choice, that's what I use and the mango butter is not greasy and also adds a little tack.
Blazing Beards I prefer more of a butter type balm but am at the point to where I need more hold lol
I dont know yet haha I’m so indecisive lol
But.....I do know that I’m looking for the least pore clogging, and least greasy as possible because as mentioned earlier the slightest things make my beard look greasy.
If I just use one butter do I use 2 tablespoons of butter and 1 tablespoon of beeswax?
The total butter to beeswax ratio remains the same if you want to follow my recipe. If you take out one tablespoon of mango butter, replace it with the butter you are using. The ratios are really a personal preference, if you prefer a firmer/stronger hold, increase the beeswax, if you want more of a conditioning balm, reduce the beeswax.
Blazing Beards thanks brother 🤟

That’s weird if Walmart sells those blue containers for medications when traveling because it’s illegal to carry a prescription without its label or bottle.
Basically it’s illegal to carry pills a few at a time in anything other than the bottle it came in lol
Especially now days with the opiate epidemic in the USA.
But great video buddy.
Was looking into this because I’ve spent way too much money on balms and oils in the two months I’ve been growing a beard lol

The containers can hold many things, vitamins, aspirin, contacts, lotion, and yes, even beard balm.

Plastic should never be used when using essential oils essential oils leach from all! Types of plastic ,(stainless steel)or glass only .just a word to the wise(food for thought)

Hey rosco! Howcome it’s dangerous ?? What does leaching really mean?
@@rexestrada310 the liquid used in plastic sucks "stuff" from the plastic bottles/containers. Not all containers are bpa free, for instance. Look up bpa in Google 👍
Plastic is a no all the way around

Keeps vampires away.
Why does every single bought beard oil have multiple carrier oils then?
Exactly right, different carriers have different properties, like anti fungal, sun protection, anti bacterial, moisturizing, etc. You can use just one, but you'd not receive all the benefits.
