Process/Preparation
1. Measure out carrier oils and essential oils into glass container, stir thoroughly, set aside.
2. Melt Mango butter in double boiler (Pot of boiling water with glass measuring cup inside).
3. Once Mango butter is completely melted, remove from heat, let sit for 4-5 minutes.
4. Add Shea butter to hot melted Mango Butter and stir until completely melted.
5. If necessary, you may put back on very low heat to completely melt the Shea butter.
6. Let mixture sit for 15-20 minutes to cool but not harden. SB warm but not burning to the touch.
7. Add Carrier and essential oil mixture. (if added when butters are too hot, essential oils will evaporate).
8. Mix thoroughly, Stir for 10 minutes alternating directions.
9. Refrigerate mixture for approximately 1-2 hours, until in a semi solid state (mushy but not drippy).
10. Transfer semi solid mixture to mixing bowl.
11. Mix with electric mixer until silky smooth and airy, scaping down sides of bowl intermittently.
12. Put finished mixture into icing bag and squeeze into container of choice.
13. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours to set, until mixture is chilled through.
14. Remove from refridgerator and let return to room temperature.
15. Enjoy your Blazing Beards Whipped Beard Butter.
Super cool resource for people to have out there! I have zero interest in making my own products, mainly because of my obsessive personality lol I do not want to enjoy it. Same reason I have never tried drugs. You doing an amazing job breaking it down and man that beard is looking great!
Thanks Dan, much appreciated. It was fun and helped kill time while my wife and kids were away. I was surprised at how well it came out.
Compare drugs to making lotions???
thank you for giving a printed copy of the recipe so readily available! This is the 4th video I’m watching about beard butters and it’s already better than the others. A true gem among RUclips!
I'm glad you're enjoying the video Kyle. Thanks for your kind words. Let me know how it turns out for you. Thanks for watching.

I love the planning beforehand, the temperature control by utilizing a waterbath and the discussion. You're like a professional chemist!
Thank you so much, I'm happy you enjoyed it.
Just wanted to say thanks a lot for this video. I've just made my first batch of this butter & it turned out great. I made a couple of substitutions - instead of the Jamaican oil & anise, I used coconut oil & bergamot. I also left it unwhipped. Gonna try a nighttime batch with lavender & sweet marjoram. Nice one, thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it and added your own twist, that's the fun part of making your own. Thanks for watching.

How did your butter turn out? Still making it?
I didn't even know whipped beard butter was a thing. Great informative video. I've been making my own oils for a couple of years now but have wanted to make my own butter and just never got around to ordering the supplies. That just changed. Ordered mango and shae butter before I finished your video. Thanks again for your content.

you just helped me figure out why my butter was so grainy for my first tryout
Glad I could help, thanks for watching.
i have done the same research on how to make my own beard butter, from watching youtube videos. i ordered a bunch of oils and butters. I know exactly what video you are talking about on adding arrow root powder, and im glad you cleared that up for me, because i was wondering lol! I have all the supplies ready to go in my closet and seeing your video pop up just helped me out tremendously!!! Thank you so much, as always, love your videos!

Also, made me willing to try whipping it. I dabble at baking so mixing shi... stuff is no big deal. Though my dog will be pissy when she cant lick the beaters lol. Well done!
Great how to video from Blazing Beard. Pretty much the same process we use and he is very correct about watching your temperatures. High temps can ruin a batch of quality butters. My only tip would be to melt, mix, and whip in one container that way you don't lose so much product in container transfer. Other than that it was a "Blazing" video. Keep up the great work brother!

" Just whip it, whip it good." I wish I could grow a blazing beard but I have to remain beardless working in chemical and petroleum plants. I'm a beekeeper and have started making beard products for my son with beeswax. I also make a wood utensil rejuvenating paste for spoons, bowls, cutting boards that also works well on leather work shoes/boots to waterproof them. Most of the products used in beard products I also use in lip balm. I will definitely give this a try.

Hello! Great video!! How many different carrier oils can I mix together?
Hi Candice, Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The number of carrier oils is personal preference, however be sure to stay within the total ratio for carrier oils, butters, and essential oils. In my recipe it would be 15ml of carrier oils, 105 ml of butters, and 6 ml of essential oils. I hope that helps.
When filling your piping bag, roll it down before putting your product in it.
Much easier to get it in the bottom of the bag rather than all over the top side of the bag.
Good advice, that was the 1st time I ever used one. I just found it in the pantry, lol. Thanks for watching.

Thanks man, It turned out way better than I expected.
are the scent oils neccesary for the base recipe? I'm planning on combining this with my bossman stage coach jelly and dont want to combine too many crazy scents. Awesome video and thanks!
No, you can use whatever scent oils you'd like. I love Bossmab stagecoach scent. You may want to reduce the amount if carrier oil and replace it with your bossman oil so the overall ratio of oils to butter is the same. Otherwise the scent would be diluted because the stagecoach scent is already mixed with carriers. Good luck, let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching.

Your butters were nice and clear once melted, I wonder if I did something wrong as mine was cloudy 😞 I still went on with the rest of the steps and I'm now waiting for it to solidify in the fridge 😁
Hi Tomasz. Yes, your finished product should melt clear. Cloudiness can be caused by poor quality butters or using too much heat during the melting process or by adding your essential oils when the butters are still too hot. Test your butters by taking a small amount without heating and melt it in your hands. If it's clear your butter is OK. Make sure you use the double boiler method to melt the butters (Don't melt directly in pot as this could scorch and result in cloudy butter). Watch them closely and stir occasionally. When they are about 95% melted remove them from the heat, they will melt the rest of the way on their own (Stir). Let the melted butters sit for about 20-30 minutes before adding your carrier and essential oils, stir thoroughly to ensure they are well integrated. Most essential oils have a low flash point, if added in too soon, they will look cloudy when added. Make sure all your utensils are very clean and rinsed really well, soap residue can also make butter cloudy. I hope his helps.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 thank you for the detailed reply, I think I may have added the other butters too soon but I'll wait and see what happens after it sets in the fridge. Maybe it's not all lost 😊 I do remember that the melted butters were barely warm to touch when I was adding the oils as I was very cautious with the temperature, maybe my spoon was dirty...
If it fails I can learn from it and go buy some chemically safe stirring tools and containers
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 so I whipped the butter anyway. It came out great, the scent is there, it didn't evaporate so I assume that my butters were either not of the best quality or they didnt melt completely. What shocked me is how much it expanded after whipping, I've prepared jars for ~180ml and had to go and grab another 30ml jar to get the leftover bit there.
The biggest issue I encountered was the "piping" part as it was melting quite quick, had to refrigerate the bag a couple of times. But, 10/10 will do it again and again. Thank you for the video!
@@Tomasz.Nowakowski So glad it worked out for you, you now have the best butter on the planet. Enjoy!

Hi there I love your video, its so simple and well explained. I have a question.. is it ok if I dont use any oils? so I was thinking of just using shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter and beeswax
Yes, of course you can use whatever ingredients you choose, but without the oils it will be very thick and pasty and hard to melt down, adding beeswax will make it more of a beard balm. IMO butters should not contain beeswax, although many do. Thanks for watching, I hope it turns out well for you.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 thank you so much for the input
great recipe
Thanks man, glad you liked it.
I make 2 oz of beard butter at a time as I need it by using 3 tablespoons of shea butter and 1 tablespoon of carrier oil and it works fantastic!! How many drops of essential oil would be appropriate for this much butter? Planning on using lemon EO. Thanks
Roughly 60 drops, but if it's for yourself and not for sale, you are free to make it as strong or weak as you like. Lemon is a citrus and the scent will dissipate quickly at standard ratios. I'd start at 60 drops, and increase from there. If you go higher you may also want to reduce the carrier oil so as to maintain the consistency of the balm. Hope that helps.
Hi Andrew! My bearded husband's name is also Andrew! I made the balm before Christmas and he loved it! Now I must make this. Question: how much tucuma butter did you add to the recipe? I don't see it in the description (unless I overlooked it). Thanks!
Hi Kim, the total butter ratio remained the same, I just received a small sample, maybe a teaspoon that I threw in, in place of some mango. Glad you're enjoying the recipes. Thanks for watching.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 Awesome! I just ordered some tucuma because it's good for hair on the head too. I'll play around with it in the beard butter when I receive it. Thanks again!

@@blazingbeardproducts2845 I will let you know how it turns out Thanks for the video Awesome job
Lol got ME excited too
i know that one can tinker with this and it will turn out allright. i've watched and read many recipes and it's basically melting butters and mixing with oils, so one can play. personally, i don't want to whip my butters but, what i want to know, is there a benefit to the whipping portion. does this just basically make it lighter and easier to apply?
I don't believe there is any performance benefit, although many people prefer the texture and find it feels more luxurious when applying.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 i take it back. i want to whip my butter. lol. thx!
Would you be able to use a hand blender instead of a mixer for this consistency?
Hi Fatima, I'm not sure, I never tried as i don't have one. I don't see why it wouldn't work. Give it a try and let me know. Thanks for watching.
Just an off topic curiosity; Have you, or how often, do you shave it all off and restart growing your beard? My wife hates it, but I get bored every couple to few years and restart just because.
I don't shave it, I'll trim it down to 5-6 inches occassionally.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching.
Has it ever happened to you where your beard butter melt because of the heat?
Yes, I took some on a trip in my car and it melted when I left it in the trunk. Most beard butters will melt at about 95-100 degrees farenheight. Put it in a cool place and it will re-solidify. If it's whipped it will loose its consistency but it will still work fine.
thx 4 sharing
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching.
How does this compare financially to just buying from a company? Any savings or is this just to say you can make your own?
Per ounce, this is significantly cheaper, although the drawback is you need to buy the materials in larger quantities which can be expensive. I think I spent about 150 for the ingredients but it made many batches of oils, butters, and balms, average about $3 an ounce.
Does this need to stay in the refrigerator since there is no beeswax or lanolin?
No refrigeration required. Oil based with high vitamin e content and oils used have shelf life of 12-18 months. Store in a dry dark place if possible our of direct sunlight and it should be fine.
Will keeping it refrigerated make it more solid or will it maintain its same whipped consistency?
Hi Jeremy, it will make it more solid, if you want it creamier let it set either less time in the fridge or in a cool place.
Do you think this would turn out okay if I only used Seeet Almond and Jojoba carrier oils? Do the other carrier oils make it a better overall product?
Thanks and great video and recipe.
Hi Kaleb, I think it would be fine. Just keep the total oil to butter ratio the same. I use the oils I selected because I like their properties and feel. Thanks for watching, let me know how it turns out. Andrew
Blazing Beards I ended up getting the other carrier oils but went with a sandalwood and tobacco/vanilla essential oil blend with a little bit of black pepper added in.
I had as much fun whipping up the beard butter as you did and was absolutely thrilled with how this turned out.
I hope to make up your recipe as I start collecting buying those essential oils I don’t currently have.
Do you have any plans on coming up with any other combination of scents for the future? Thank you so much for putting this video up. It gave me all the tools needed to not only make whipped beard butter but make it turn out better than I could have ever imagined!!
@@kalebrutherford1637 Glad to hear it Kaleb. It is a lot of fun whipping up your own. I don't currently have plans to do more scents, but I'll be sure to post it if I do.
Do you use refined sheabutter or unrefined ? I used unrefined and made a 25% try out batch, but even with 'a gallon' scented oil, the smell of the sheabutter is like a rotting cadaver😂
Thanks for watching, I used unrefined but I did not have that problem, you may have had a contaminated batch of Shea Butter. It should have a slightly nutty aroma, but it was unnoticeable in my final product. Refined Shea Butter will work fine as well. Hope your next batch turns out better.
Are the butters measured by weight or volume when you're talking about ounces?
By volume, I measured with tablespoons, where 2 US tablespoons equal 1 oz.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 great, thank you!
When you use pots and mixing bowls, are they now only for beard oils and such or can you continue to use them in the kitchen. I know that what is you say is not concrete, just in your opinion what do you think or do.
Hi, thanks for watching. The pots never touch the oils or butters. Water is in the pot, then a pyrex/glass with the butters is put in a measuring cup which is then put in the boiling water to melt. So yes I still use the pots for cooking. I put the measuring cup in the dishwasher and still use that as well.

Do you leave it in the fridge in the jar without the top
I put it in the fridge without the top, but if you are worried about spilling, put the top on, it should not make any difference other than it might take a little longer to cool and get to its semi solid state before whipping. Thanks for watching, I hope it turns out well for you.
I can make it unscented right ? I like it unscented at night when i go to bed ... Just melt the butters and oils / Freeze and skip the fragrance oil part .. right ..
Yes, of course, the scent is optional.
Can I use reg Castor as opposed to black Jamaican castor?

@@blazingbeardproducts2845tip for people. you don't need anything special for getting it in the jars.. a clear freeze bag wrap it up tightly and cut a hole at the tip and squeeze.
Is it really worth the time? Is it financially a good decision
Hi Dave, Yes, I believe it is worth the time especially if you enjoy creating something useful for yourself. On a per ounce basis it is definitely a great financial decision. It does take a larger upfront payment to buy the ingredients, but you'll be able to make your own for pennies on the dollar vs. buying retail.
Can you make a beard butter using tallow?
I suppose you could although I think there are better options.
I've got plenty of it from briskets I cook and want to put it to some use
Try it out, just don't be surprised when all the dogs in the neighborhood follow you around, lol.
Would pure lanolin be a good thing to add to beard butter?
Lanolin can be used although I would use it sparingly as it can be greasy if too much is used.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 ok and liquid or jelly better?
@RichardNorby420 liquid lanolin is more processed than the natural wax/gel. I would prefer the gel.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 ok and if I were to add some to my homemade beard butter how much would I add? My normal recipe i use is 3 tablespoons of shea butter and 1 tablespoon of carrier oil.
@RichardNorby420 I don't know as I've never tried it. I would start with 1/2 tablespoon and add more if needed.
I’m looking into making my own butter as I have some scent ideas and I have to avoid almond oil due to an allergy. Why are the oils considered carrier oils and what is the purpose? I love the consistency of Detroit Grooming butter and want to try and replicate it. I’m thinking of using Shea butter. I’m not sure what other butter to use. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Katz, carrier oils are used to provide healthy nutrients to your skin and hair. They are also used to dilute essential oils that are too strong to use by themselves. In butters, they are used to soften the butter. I personally like a combination of Shea and Mango butters.
Blazing Beards Great! Gonna give it a shot.
Thank u
You're welcome, enjoy!
Has anyone made this without whipping it. Just as a poured?
Yes, just as good poured. Thanks for watching.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 awesome. Thank you for the reply.
I would not add cinnamon
You can add any scents you like and make it your own. Thanks for watching,
Would a simple recipe for beard butter if 1 oz shea butter, 1 oz carrier oil and 1 teaspoon of beeswax work well?
Personally, I'd skip the beeswax, and use 1 1/2 oz. shea butter an 1/2 ounce of carrier oil. Scent as desired.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 ok and that will give me 2 oz of butter?
@@RichardNorby420 less whatever sticks to your mixing receptacle. But yes.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 I added more wax to my beard wax I made and it came out great and I made some butter today with 1.5 oz shea butter and .5 oz almond oil. Came out great but will use before bed.
I'd love to use your affiliate links for purchasing ingredients if you have any. I can't wait to make this for hubs. Where do you get your Jamaican Black Castor oil?
Most of my ingredients I get from Camden Grey, but the Jamaican Black Castor I got from Amazon. You'll want to make sure all your oils are cold pressed and hexane free. Here is the link I used: www.amazon.com/Jamaican-Castor-Conditioning-REGULAR-Cold-Pressed/dp/B079DWFYGC/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=2JH5TBY0QONQD&keywords=jamaican+black+castor+oil&qid=1645047274&sprefix=jama%2Caps%2C91&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExWFEzWlJaWVpQOEJZJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNzQyMjY1M0xTTjRFTEdVUzA3SyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMDAwNTcwSjFOMVNCQklWUDU1JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
I don't have any affiliate links.
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 Awesome thanks so much for the Castor Oil link. Never heard of Camden Grey. I'll look them up.
If I were to do this recipe by ounces is it ounces in weight or in volume like liquid ounces?
I used liquid ounces for this recipe. Thanks for watching!
@@blazingbeardproducts2845 thank you!
@@blazingbeardproducts2845Thanks for clarifying. My 1st couple forays into mixing my own I nerded out and looked up/converted everything to SpGr and tried keeping notes on ingredients by weight. Probably not worth the time to worry about that way. Haha
