Portishead and massive attack are always a good listen for me, I'm from bristol so it's close to my heart growing up
Portishead were considered a leading act of the "trip-hop" genre.
...And, FYI No band that's affiliated to "trip-hop" like the name given to the genre, I think it's cool. Which is kind of a guarantee that it's probably not.
THAT CIGARETTE!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I honestly, watch the Roseland performance twice a year. ❤❤❤
Now listen to the studio version. This band is hip hop beats with so much moodiness and feeling. Their first two albums were on high rotation for me in the 90s.
Been on high rotation for me ever since. Timeless!
Brilliant song, brilliant album.
Adore Beth Gibbons lush tones.
Ha I love you recognised the sample there. This song takes me back to a certain time.
This track in particular reminds me so much of the old 40's lounge singers :)
Oh the memories of high school in the early 90's
Its a sexy song
Dummy is a such a good album top to bottom. Beth has such an enthralling voice.
Love this song, It samples "Ike's Rap II" by Isaac Hayes, 1971 Black Moses album.
I never get tired of chillin to Portishead!
She has a real 20's speakeasy vibe...
Tricky used the same sample for Hell Is Round The Corner, which came out around the same time. I can't hear one song without thinking of the other. "My brain thinks bomb-like".
Trip hop. What you're hearing is Trip Hop. Portishead and Massive Attack are without a doubt the Number 1 exponents of that sound. Portishead Dummy was an utterly brilliant album and you can pretty much pick anything with that jazzy 30's style sample and loop, but also Massive Attack (also saw them live, amazing) and their Mezzanine and Blue Lines albums you simply can't go wrong with.
Try Sour Times or Roads from Portishead, and Protection, Unfinished Sympathy and Teardrop from Massive Attack.
Honorable mention for Tricky
Virtually everything by Portishead is brilliant! I'd recommend 'Sour Times' for your next listen though. She was suffering with a really bad sore throat for this concert and apologised for her 'poor' performance! lol :)
Spot on about Eilish. I can see her covering this too, or many of Portishead's songs. BTW - genre is Trip Hop and it's pronounced poor-tis-hed.
thanks for mentioning new birth wildflower, didnt know it and i listened to it and loved it
The band was started by a DJ. The band itself is a DJ, a guitarist, and a singer. I think that combination really makes their sound unique.
Nah, I mean, that is hardly enough of a story. These cats studied the sound they wanted to create, like architects building the world's first bridge they carefully put all the pieces together and it took them many years. "DJ" is not a synopsis for that.
Memories .... I love it
Such a dope track. This album is a work of art.
You can imagine how we reacted when we first heard it in 1995, right?
ty for an awesome reaction for this awesome song and performance
I hear this and it makes me ink of Billie Holiday and the blues ladies from the 40s. I'm transported back to a smoky late night bar in the grungy part of the city; where the whisky is cheap and the lights are dim.
Truly special is Beth Owens
I loved this song!
If a song was a sedative, this would be the choice, it has the sound of " load that weapon with hammer and boot me up" lol
I saw on an interview recently, Madonna was originally asked to do the vocals for this song. Thank goodness she said no. This is my favourite song. It would not have been the same.
Wasn't that for massive attack. Deffo not Portishead.
Hadn't heard this particular live version of it yet, nice choice.
Damn bro, your own voice sounds right up there with Beth. Would love to see you sing with her.
I’ve been a huge fan of Portishead since early 2000s and I have NEVER considered who could cover a track like this and be worthwhile, but Billie Eilish!!! 😱 You couldnt have said it better
I used to know a beautiful girl who loved this song so much. It was the kind of thing where she was just basically like, This is my song.
@@CheeekyKitty I have not seen the official music video for this song.
Such a tune. Great performance to pick - Beth G really pulled out the stops for that one. You were right about the vampire vibe, too: if you can track down a film called "Nadja", Portishead did the soundtrack.
the scorn remix from the craft of this goes HARD
"what in the vampires in Brooklyn" lmao i'm stealing that line. i know u meant werewolves in london but that is amazing
Portishead heavily sampled Argentinian composer Lalo Schifrin 🌞🎶🎥😎🙌👍
Yess
The sample is from Isaac Hayes 'Ike's Rap 2'
Also, for those not in the know. A glory box is traditionally a gift given to the man to compensate them for the fact they have to provide for the woman (rather than her father) after marriage.
There may also be a deliberate undertone of erm a different kind of box as a double entendre (a french phrase meaning two meanings). I'm gonna leave that one in your imagination. It seems she's not playing unlike the other girls...
When Cyrille Aimee covers a song, you know it’s awesome.
Port is head. It's a small somewhat dreary estuary town near Bristol, (my home town), on west coast England. Lol.
That’s the sound of trip hop
She gives me Eartha Kitt vibes. 🥰
Just a little something, they used to open for public enemy ( noise music) while in Europe
Oh yeah, sorry to hear about your dad dude. Hope you're all keeping up ok.
❤❤❤
Beth Gibbons reminds me of Billie Holiday at times.
Trip-hop
Try Portishead "Only You", or "Numb".
Hear that guitar solo?
It'll curl your hair and bend your knees.
Portiss head
Por - tuhs- hed
Por 'tis head also works. It's the name of a town in England. That simultaneously got the pi55 taken out of and the biggest promotion of its existance
Tricky had a great trip-hop album as well. But portishead is S tier
You need to hear the studio version too. While they are better on the album due to Beth's notorious stage fright, I saw them with my gf live and it was something truly incredible.
I like the cigarette too 🔥
Isaac Hayes "Ike's Rap II"... THIS is the original...
Por.. tis.. head.. not porttisheed
I'm sure you have listen to them b4? Trip Hop R&B Cool Shit..that's the sound!
Other people sampled them not the other way around.
Which came first, “Wildflower” or “Ike’s Rap II”?
You should react to Hole - Violet
You won’t be disappointed I promise
5 seconds in and already interrupting listen first comment AFTER!
Biscuit will fuck you up due to the gritty instrumental and her voice over it
It’s pronounced Portis Head
Portis Head, the head of a portis. Not shed.
Tender and patient. I agree brother
And sexy 👀
Cigarette...... she's tokin' a spliff ....
God, this takes me back. Don't think too hard about what it's about. Or do if you want. It's so perfectly vague and meaningless.
John Martyns version shows the root.
It's pronounced Poor Tiss Head FYI I'm from Bristol where this type of music was from and the band are named after the town of Portishead which is near Bristol
did you honestly say 'a good little group'?
Pour-TIS-HEAD
Do yourself a favor and listen to Beth Gibbons cover S.O.S. by ABBA you will never look at ABBA the same again.
Glory box and give me a reason to be a woman. Reckon you can join the dots!
Portis…head. 😂… not Portis shead 😘
This is one of my all time favorites but the live version is so cringe. I couldn’t even finish. It sounds like the radio playing the CD is fucked up and melting. To truly appreciate Portishead you have to listen to the studio version.
