I was working for Our Price when 'Dummy' came out. Portishead were pushed massively by the music press and so it got played a lot in the shops. I wasn't a huge fan at the time, but I heard if so often that some if must have rubbed off and now, I quite like them. I will have heard this album in the past but will have to revisit it.

Great review. As someone who grew up on hard rock and metal, it's interesting to see other likeminded people recognize the brilliance of Portishead. There was a lot of great music in the 90s that was inspired by (mid to late 80s NYC) hip-hop and its means of production: sampling, programmed percussion, scratching.

Nice to see Portishead on here. Wandering Star was a fave. Also a mention for Dougie Maclean. I saw him at a festival, having never heard of him, and was mesmerized, especially Ready For The Storm.

I bought New Model Army live with the Leipzig Symphony Orchestea recently and thought it was great.
Hope to see a review of the new Hawkwind Album , i saw them in Wolverhampton recently .
I have ordered this Portishead Album as well as the Singers forthcoming solo album.
There is some real good stuff about but paying for it all is sometimes prohibitive.
    As always take care mate.

Are the source of the additional tracks the same as those that appear on the DVD or not? Why are the audio from the DVD mixed with the opinions of the recording engineer operator in the truck that recorded the presentation, ambient audio and other backstage footage?

I Don't know as I do not have the DVD. I am only reviewing the vinyl edition here and that sounds excellent to me. thank you - Phil

The most brilliant fact about Portishead was they were not a typical "electronic trip hop group" they were a band. Any samples they used in their music was taken from their own rehearsal space jam sessions, in which they would record it, to later sample it into their own music. A much cheaper alternative to paying royalties to other artists.

That's not true. They sampled tons of other people's music. Lalo Schifrin, Weather Report, War, Isaac Hayes, etc.
