It’s The Music Stupid : The Worst Band In The World 0651am 26.7.24 i was very intrigued as to what constituted the worst band in the world... no, not human league.... not the Housemartins.... 10cc? nowt wrong with 10cc........ even i couldn't decide what would be the worst band in the world... ruclips.net/video/ANIj1wfMuK4/видео.htmlfeature=shared maybe the king's singers, maybe they could be deemed the worst band? he's right, though- they have a hell of a time.
@@jeffsimon9594 I’ll ignore the attempted condensation Jeffrey. The point is the average person listening to 10cc would not know the names of the band members nor do most people realize that in 20ish months between 1965-1967 GG would write almost a dozen songs that broke into the top 40 somewhere in the world. That is McCartney/Lennon level of musical output and that’s before you add In the most productive eleven years of 10cc
I was 15 in 1973, when 10cc's first album came out. I was a long-haired Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin fan, but I loved Donna and Rubber Bullets, so I bought the album. Back then, all the lads would take their LPs into school and swap them (temporarily) for other people's albums. When I took 10cc to school, I was made fun of because they were seen as a pop band and not serious rockers. I didn't care. I knew they were great. I think my favourite track on the album was Fresh Air For My Mama. I bought Sheet Music as soon as it came out. It has been my favourite 10cc album ever since. Musically and lyrically, it is superb. My favourite song on there is Somewhere In Hollywood. Glorious. The Original Soundtrack is very good, but I've never liked I'm Not In Love. In fact, I actively dislike it. How Dare You is OK, but I haven't listened to it more than once or twice in the last thirty years. I bought Deceptive Bends, which had some good tracks, and Bloody Tourists, which didn't. Godley and Creme were much more interesting to me after 10cc broke up than Stewart and Gouldman. Consequences is an incredible album. L has some of the most earwormy songs anywhere. Every time I play it, the songs continue to play in my brain for weeks afterwards. Freeze Frame and Ismism have some excellent tracks. After that, they became less interesting. Overall, 10cc is one of my favourite bands from the 70s.
You haven't listened to How Dare You! ? It is 10 Cc's last great album. It starts with a cool instrumental, proceeds with drama in I'm Mandy Fly Me, rocks with Art for Art's Sake ( both chart hits)and ends with the kitchen sink drama Don't Hang Up. Their most accomplished, coherent album.
I bought a copy as soon as it came out, 50 years ago, almost to the week, as I type this. Superb clarity as only master craftsmen could deliver, and thankfull Decca in the UK matched this with their mastering and pressing. Pretty much the soundtrack of Summer '74 for me, and one of those possessions on my "what would you grab if your house caught fire" list.
Thank you for covering 10cc. They don't get the attention they deserve. 10cc was my first favorite band. I joined the RCA Music Club in 1976 (8 albums for a penny!") and their "100cc" album was the best of the bunch and got me hooked. After the split, my allegiance was with Godley & Creme, although they tested that with "Consequences." By the time "L" was released, I was a freshman in art school and G&C fit in quite nicely with that vibe. I only wish the original four members of 10cc could have kept it together a little while longer.
You hit a home run with this one Mazzy! Have always loved Sheet Music which is pure brilliance. Even later they had a suite “Feel the Benefit” which is very beautiful. Great history Mazzy you really made my day.
Funnily enough I just bought Sheet Music last week in the cheap bin at a fair. I've been meaning to pick up their lps for a few years but their records are so common here in the UK I never prioritise them. I like the whole back story of the 4 members leading up to 10cc and all the quirky tracks they were recording for other artists. There's a CD comp Strawberry Bubblegum 69 to 72 that collects a lot of these tracks. I'd highly recommend Graham Goldman's solo lp from 68 on RCA (US release only) with versions of For Your Love, Bus Stop, No Milk Today and other great tracks. Shocking how it wasn't a big seller. Cheers Nigel
I bought Sheet Music 50 years ago, still got price sticker on it £2.26 there's a couple of quid well spent! Still love the album all these years later, and my other favourite, the debut album.
Thanks for this, Mazzy. So many great memories of 10cc and I love to hear stories about them. They were so clever in their writing and skillful in the execution. I always wondered what their career path would have been like had they not peaked and broken up before MTV arrived. Godley and Creme obviously left their mark on the music video world but I'll bet there would be a whole legion of 10cc fans had they been in "heavy rotation". Also, good that you mentioned "Consequences". I never bought it when it came out but dipped my toes into it a year or two ago when I discovered an entire podcast series devoted to the album. I can't say that I totally get it, but I found a pristine copy that I'm still trying to work my way through. Well done, Mazzy.
Great segment!! I thought, back in that other galaxy a long time ago, that Queen nicked "One Night in Paris" from 10cc. Whether they did or not doesn't really matter, both are epic and magic. That one song garnered all the attention and one remains mostly forgotten seems tragic. Godley & Creme's mighty Gizmotron was one of the greatest guitar effect tools ever invented, maybe just behind the wah-wah pedal. Thanks again for pulling back the curtain on one of the great bands of the rock era.
Shortly after the hit 'I'm Not In Love' fell of the charts I was driving to a local beach when on the radio came Art For Arts Sake. I was smitten. A song that imprinted on me immediately. I went out and bought the album How Dare You and its one of my favorite albums.
That is a great album with fne songs and terrific puns. Originally owned the U.K. Mercury cassette that did have a good chunk of the album art work for once.
Nice review! It's ironic that Kevin, who imho, has the best voice, never got lead vocals on a no.1 but he's still sounding wonderful these days having just released his first solo album and occasionally turning up to sing live with Graham's touring 10CC band. BTW Kevin was also in the Mockingbirds with Graham - they issued a few singles but no hits unfortunately.
Thanks mazzy , for a second i thought you were going to slate 10cc , but the opposite happened, they were very well liked here in England in the 1970s.
10CC were pure genius, one of my favourite bands and I saw them live many times in the 70’s. Having your own studio and the time to experiment was so important - (for example the 600 track bounce down of I’m not in Love as you mentioned) - brilliant songwriters, musicians and singers. They could do any type of song, from pop ballads to full on pop, to clever long stuff like ‘One Night in Paris’ all with a British ironic sense of humour. (When performing I’m not in Love one night the backing tape stopped and they all just layed down on the stage.) Art rock is a good definition - ‘Art for art’s sake, money for god’s sake …’
Apparently One night in Paris was an inspiration to Freddie Mercury for Bohemian Rhapsody's multi-part song format. Queen and 10cc - two great bands. 10cc, sadly, comparatively forgotten, though I play Sheet Music regularly. Proggish in some of their songs such as 'Somewhere in Hollywood'
Thanks for a thorough presentation of a great band, Mazzy. Being born in '59, 10CC was one of the first bands whose records I (then 14 years old) bought when they came out. Your video ads interesting (new to me) background information of the time until the band became 10CC. Also, thanks for only once mentioning Jonathan King (the owner of the record label United Kingdom) and not giving him more credit for the creation of 10CC than he deserves - which he himself apparently thinks is much more... It is almost pathetic to read what he writes on the back of "10CC's Greatest Hits" (1976) about when someone brought him a tape w. a 10CC tune that nobody thought would be a hit: "Faboulos - it's a smash. I'll give them a name in the morning" King writes. "That night I had a dream - and the band was christened". May I add a few comments to your video: "How Dare You!" (1976) - the original constellation's last album - still holds up, I think. The tune "Art For Arts Sake (money for goods sake)" nails right where the industry - and 10CC - were. A little like Pink Floyd's "Welcome To The Machine" from the year before. Also "I'm Mandy Fly Me" and "Lazy Way" are still really great tunes. After the split up, Godley & Creme also put out the album "L" (1978). This I actually listen to from time to time (opposite to "Consequenses"). There are a lot of great tunes on it - for example "Art School Canteen" which deals with the broken expectations and ambitions to become a "real" artist (in the song a painter, not a musician though). Also "This Sporting Life" and "Hit Factory/Business is Business" are worth a listen. Thanks for bringing 10CC up - they deserve it.
Hallelujah! At last, some long-overdue love for one of the. UK's finest, wittiest and musically accomplished bands. The blend of the individual talents into a cohesive and thought-provoking unit gave rise to some magnificent music. Personal faves: Silly Love Second Sitting for the Last Supper How Dare You Art for Art's Sake
Well l thought l was the only one who loved Consequences.. Your in depth explanation of this Recording pretty much nails it. I actually love the Peter Cook pieces and l believe he did it all in one take but may be wrong. Great work
sheet music is a wonderful record for sure. A seriously whimsical record. The 2 tracks that open the record are classic but then Old Wild Men, Hotel, and others keep the humor flowing. Such talent. This was my 1st real introduction to 10cc followed by Original Soundtrack.
I graduated high school in '78. Apparently I complained a lot about the 10cc break-up to my friends, because one of them signed my yearbook with "10cc reunion tomorrow." It's always a day away...
I think of 10cc as Progressive Pop. Their albums are sonic theatre. Sheet Music is my favorite album by them. One of my favorite groups then and now. The tragedy of this talented group was the Worst Song in the World: They started as friends and ended as enemies. The first major dis-chord (forgive me) was over The Things We Do for Love, a great 10cc song and follow up to I’m Not In Love and, if I’m not mistaken, became their biggest seller. It’s a complicated story that caused a lot of hurt feelings. All this is out there to explore and discussed first hand by the band. One of 10cc’s great qualities is their candor. in my opinion, continuing to make creatively strong (and marketable) music would be hard to do and would cause a lot of tension in the artist. Add to that the stress of business obligations and touring and it's not hard to see why bands might eventually turn on each other. I also think an indulgent lifestyle helps destroy the rational perspective that might have slowed decay and ultimately strengthened the relationships. As it generally is among people, emotions rule. Very good review.
Only later did I fully appreciate the sophistication and genius of 10cc's music. During the 1970s, my music diet was full of Chicago and The Ealgles, both of whom had 3 excellent vocalists and stellar musicians. I always loved Dreadlock Holiday for its clever humorous lyrics and great groove.
I knew all of this except for the Neil Sedaka part, I didn't realise that not only did they help him with his comeback but that he inspired them to get their act together and to pursue a full proper caeer as actively commercial artists, wow thanks, I learned something new today!
RAMESES - SPACE HYMMS is a strange record... Husband and wife with 10CC backing them up.... Fantastic Roger Dean cover.... Cult-ish feel to the music and concept.
This is the best version of 10 CC. sheet music to last picture show. Great Record after Godly and Cream left but when the 4 of them were writing. That was Magic.
Perfect video for me Mazzy. I love 10CC so much, since I was 6 or 7 years old and got Bloody Tourists. I completed my 10cc and Godley & Creme studio album collection on CD and then this winter on vinyl, only missing mirror/mirror which I found on CD in June. Finding that one on vinyl will be… complicated. Thank you for diving into this today, the day I got my Mazzy t-shirt! Cheers from Morten in Oslo.
One small extra - after Godley and Creme broke apart Kevin and Graham formed a project called GG06 which you can find online - think they did 6 or 8 tracks and they are all great, almost like a lost 10cc album.
Hi Mazzy, under appreciated band...I saw them as a 12 year old playing in a local park.....yes a local park ! After their hit Rubber Bullets this was 1973. Graham Gouldman is a real good song writer having penned hits with the Hollies and others. Later Gouldman recorded with Andrew Gold (WAX) ...Impressed that they came onto your radar . Top knowledge
Norman I would have been really impressed if you had shown a vertigo swirl of their album Ramses space hymns but otherwise a good in-depth showcase of the rest of their work together
It should be pointed out that the Something/Come Together single only went to number 1 on the Billboard chart due to a policy change that took place just after the two songs peaked separately at numbers 3 and 2 respectively. As fortune would have it, Billboard instituted a change the following week where both sides of a double sided hit would chart together, allowing both to share the number one spot for 1 week. Also, if you count the Cashbox chart then the Beatles had 4 different lead singers with number 1 singles since Yellow Submarine hit the top spot on that chart (while peaking at number 2 on Billboard).
I haven't thought about 10 cc in 50 years. I was glad to see you mention "the gizmo", I kept waiting for it and wasn't disappointed. I am kind of surprised you didn't go into the meaning of the band's name or is that story not true? Thank, Mazzy.
The sperm name origin is apparently nit true. The name came from a dream Jonathan King apparently had. But knowing his history , it just might be true 😎😆😵💫🤠
Sheet Music is my favorite 10CC album, and I love most of the tunes. “Worst Band in the World” is awesome, but so is “Wall Street Shuffle”, “Old Wild Men”, Somewhere in Hollywood”, and “The Sacro-iliac”. I loved these guys so much that I was one of the few to buy the concept album “Consequences” released by Crème and Godley. So the song “Something” was a tune that was released as a double A side with “Come Together” and it went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, also in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and West Germany. That’s your #1 by George Harrison.
Hi Mazzy - I was brought up in a village called Marple, just outside Stockport, I now live in Australia. On one of our trips back to the UK, my wife and I went to an exhibition in Stockport of Strawberry Studios. Its long gone now, but the exhibition contained lots of memorabilia from their heady days, Guitars from 10CC, the Smiths and lots more. Brilliant.
Thank you for doing this video. A great and very underrated band. 4 very talented musician's and writers. Pity they split in 1976 because they could have continued to make wonderful music for years as a foursome.
Thank you for hi lighting this great album Mazzy. As well as all being great musicians and experts in the recording of their music, they were brilliant live. 1975 saw them headline in Cardiff Castle. Magical experience. Thin Lizzy opened the show, followed by Man (Welsh Band) then Steeleye Span. Great memories!
There's a certain irony in The Worst Band in the World telling us I Wanna Rule the World, lol. I just listened to "Consequences" in its entirety, and as a long-time fan of the absurdist humor of The Marx Brothers it wasn't a stretch to love absurdist British humor as a kid. (Though my parents certainly didn't appreciate it) I also liked the Firesign Theatreish nature to the thing. Getting Sarah Vaughan instead of Ella isn't exactly a step down, IMO. Great upload and I can see myself revisiting this maybe once a year.
I love this band deeply and have since the early 70’s. I’m so glad to see so many like minded people. I would go as far as to say; musically we are a cut above. I was lucky enough and honoured to have recorded through the Strawberry board a number of years ago. It now resides in Audities recording studio in Bearspaw Alberta. Cheers all!
Got to admit the title boiled me blood "worst band in the world" ready to scream at you lol, then you quickly explained the reason and my heart rate levelled out, every song you mentioned literally gave me goose bumps and had to dig out my albums ready to play, fav track "One Night in Paris" very dark very avante garde, Cry is a masterpiece of pop..
Eric Stewart's vocals are exceptional, Run Away from the Ten Out of 10 album being a personal choice showcasing them. Such a creative group and great to see your video. Thank you.
Hipgnosis / Floyd-related footnote: The futuristic elevator door interior (located at some hotel in the US if I remember right) used for the Sheet Music cover was re-used on the "A Nice Pair" cover from the same year. I think "L" is a masterwork.
Mazzy in the UK their humour is known as irony, I’m not sure you guys get irony…… Nice to see you talking about 10CC, I worked in Stockport and would see them around occasionally. I have their first 4 albums and remember playing Sheet Music to death
Mazzy does it again! 10cc ... one of my absolute favorite bands! Perfect pop. "Sheet Music" is pure genius. Prefab Sprout (who I happened to mention in the comments of your last video) are their heirs; have you heard them? As you mention, a big part of their "concept" is humor *in the music* (besides often in the lyrics). That makes them sometimes resemble Frank Zappa's music (who of course asked "Does Humor Belong In Music?").
@@mazzysmusic Not to worry! (about replying) But have a look under the Relayer video. 😉 Prefab Sprout is well worth diving. For me they are second only to Beatles. Paddy McAloon is as musical genius of the McCartney caliber, with sort of a Lennon mind.
What I loved and love about 10cc is their intelligent songwriting style masked to sound like simple pop songs? Went on a homage to Strawberry Studios a couple of years ago. (Harrison shared a double A side with Come Together/Something which hit No.1 in late 69.)
I bought Consequences when it came out. I loved it for the most part. Sad to see 10cc split apart from it though. Sheet Music, The Original Soundtrack & How Dare You, were all great albums. I can't say the same about Deceptive Bends and beyond, and didn't really get into the following Godley/Creme album which I think was called "L". 10cc also had a lot of great non-album single b-sides.
Great video Norman. I have been a fan of 10cc since the 70s. Dont know how it escaped me that they were the sum of two pairs. Thanks for the back stories. BTW was wondering why you missed Feel the Benefit but see you covered it in another video. To me that song deserves to be up there with all the greats of the 70s.
I saw them live in the mid seventies. A couple of friends and I got to the gig early and just walked into the venue (no security) - 10cc were doing a sound check - Graham Gouldman and Kevin Godley came and chatted to us - I still have their autographs - I asked Kevin Godley if there was any chance of getting Lol Creme's autograph (who was on stage having some problems with some machinery) he told me better not, as he was in a bad mood. 10cc is still one of my favourite bands - the first band I ever saw live
Thanks for that highly informative video. It’s good to be reminded about their incredible creativity and talent. Will we ever see anything as good as they were in popular music again"
Excellent succinct, potted history of the band. I saw Graham Gouldman's current version at The Royal Albert Hall a couple of months ago when Kevin Godley made a rare live appearance, including singing Cry and sharing some drumming duties. A lot of their songs dont follow simple, pop chord progressions and I continue to have fun trying to transcribe some of them from different points in the story, including the honour of being the first to 'crack' Worst Band in the World - at least on ultimate-guitar (where they all are btw). The most obscure is probably the late 60s Kevin Godley-sung bubblegum 'Umbopo' by Doctor Father.
I was fortunate to see them live in Perth a year or two after they'd released "The Original Soundtrack" album. They were absolutely brilliant on stage and note perfect. One of the few rock acts I've seen who managed to replicate the studio sound of their records. I recall thinking at the time they will never be able to reproduce the complex sounds of "I'm not in Love" track but they pulled it off perfectly. The audience at the time were spellbound. It was almost a spiritual experience. A great band. So much talent wrapped up in one group of artists. They were totally professional in that they turned up on time and appeared to be focused on providing the best musical experience. That night they played their hearts out for the enjoyment and satisfaction of their audience. Not a trace of over inflated egos. Great band.
“I pity inanimate objects” off Freeze Frame blew my 16 year old mind. Great album that was important with my musical education. I’ve sadly neglected 10cc for a long time so onto Discogs and Ebay for me. Thanks yet again Mazzy for re/introducing me to great music.
In my view the 3 songs that were so original that they have never been bettered are Procul Harum - Whiter Shade of Pale (with a big tip of the hat to Bach), Queen - Bohemian Raphsody and 10CC - I'm not in Love.
A couple of months ago I was at Vinyl Solution here in San Mateo, waiting for my turn while some other guy was flipping through the New Arrivals bin, and he pulled out a copy of Sheet Music right under my nose. Grrr!
Couple of 10cc/Beatles fun facts - in the seventies George Harrison said if you want to listen to the Beatles now listen to 10CC. Eric Stewart worked with McCartney of course on Press to Play and other. Also Macca worked in Strawberry Studios with his brother Mike making the single Leave It and associated album. Finally I had my hair cut for over twenty years at the little barbers just around the corner from the studios 😉
I was working in a shop about forty years ago and this little fella came in, I sold him some film and out he went, the manager asked me did I know who he was, Errr not a clue I said. It's him of Coronation St. said the manager, It's Bill Roach he plays Ken Barlow, Err no, I'm still clueless, never heard of him. But when Graham Gouldman came in with Andrew Gold I knew exactly who he was, I said I was a big fan and thanked him for the music he did and how much I enjoyed. My father had a friend who worked on the door at Strawberry Studios as there were always people hanging around, the more people the bigger the band.
I love the first four albums, including How Dare You. I think they kind of lost something when the two arty guys left. They were still a good pop-rock band with interesting lyrics, but they weren’t as musically interesting to me.
Their first 4 albums are CLASSIC. I turned on all of my friends to 10cc. But after the split the magic was gone. Yes I bought Deceptive Bends and Bloody Tourists but Stewart & Gouldman became to sappy. And I was even more disappointed with the solo albums by Godley & Creme. They survived doing music videos for other artists. But we still have those great early albums.
Hi Mazzy, One of my favorites from the 70's. I bought How Dare You first, the others followed. Rubber Bullets was the only record of theirs I didn't care for. Our local bars had them on the jukeboxes. Thanks for the video, take care.
Just this year a complete CD box set, "10cc 20 Years" was released, with 2 CDs of remixes and B-sides. All remastered with improved sound. Highly recommended.
- mentioning amazing drum sounds and Strawberry Stufios links nicely with Matin Hannet’s shenanigans there for that little album from 1979 recorded there. then if memory serves: it was bought and renamed Suite 16 by the bass player in that band but could be wrong.
Sheet Music is one of my favourite albums - clever, witty and tuneful. Such a depth of talent is that band. I'd love to see someone like Vinyl Me Please or Analogue Productions do this
There were a lot of early 80s polls that would put 'I'm not in love' among the GREATEST songs in recorded history if not sometimes voting it top. Just putting that out there for context for a later generation.
I Love10CC - a really original band who produced some of the best tracks of the seventies They recorded the album 'Deceptive Bends' in my hometown of Dorking, England and they took the name of the album from a a two lane stretch of highway on the way there from London. The roadsigns 'Deceptive Bends' are no longer there and the road has been narrowed to slow the traffic down. it was notorious for accidents, especially for motorcyclists who seemed to use it as a race track!
Excellent musicians & very creative in the studio. Kinda Art Pop/Rock, with very, very clever arrangemets. Great studio, too: where many legendary bands from the punk & especially post-punk bands like The Fall & Joy Division recorded some classic tracks, amongst a host of many others... Great video, Mazzy, thanks!
definitely one of my favorite bands and albums, especially the track 'I'm Mandy fly me' . . . Godley & Creme came after with 'L' another all time favorite
Sheet Music was one of my favorites from '74, not uniform in quality, but stellar in places! Experimental Pop. With Godley-Creme, it was to be expected.
First concert I went to was 10cc at Hull City Hall in 1974, absolutely brilliant. I still love listening to the first album, Sheet Music and Original Soundtrack. Are they in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame? If not, such a travesty!
I'm Mandy, fly me is my favourite. The music, arrangement and production on that track is extraordinary.
10cc were undoubtedly the most underrated band in the Rock/Pop era.
The first six albums just pure gold.
So glad for appreciation showing now
Don´t think they were underestimated. They had a lot of hits.
Original Soundtrack is also one of their masterpieces too.
I’m Not In Love still amazes me.
Saw them in concert and they were great.
Mandy is a beautiful song.
10cc to me are the benchmark for Art Rock. Such a brilliant, clever group of artists

Thank you. The single lp radio comp is great.
If I could only keep one of their albums, it's that one.
10cc were excellent and glad you said football and not soccer Mazzy. I love your knowledge of music from all over the world.
Surprised you didnt talk about "How Dare You" last album with all 4 guys. It is my favorite and I'm Mandy, is my favorite 10cc song.
This wasn’t a full catalog discussion. I usually showcase five albums in this series ✌🏼
(When performing I’m not in Love one night the backing tape stopped and they all just layed down on the stage.)
Art rock is a good definition - ‘Art for art’s sake, money for god’s sake …’
Apparently One night in Paris was an inspiration to Freddie Mercury for Bohemian Rhapsody's multi-part song format. Queen and 10cc - two great bands. 10cc, sadly, comparatively forgotten, though I play Sheet Music regularly. Proggish in some of their songs such as 'Somewhere in Hollywood'
I love 10cc/Godley & Creme and I love Peter Cook, maybe that's why I love Consequences.
Me too! Isn't it great that they got together? I have an interview with Peter and Russell Harty on my channel which you might enjoy.
May I add a few comments to your video:
"How Dare You!" (1976) - the original constellation's last album - still holds up, I think.
Personal faves:
Silly Love
Second Sitting for the Last Supper
How Dare You
Art for Art's Sake
One of my all time favourite albums, songs The Worst Band In The World and The Dean And I, classic singles.
Great for bringing 10cc to the attention of a new audience. I’m a Brit, I’m a huge fan. Thanks
Couldn't agree more! First two albums the best for me.
My pleasure!

Well l thought l was the only one who loved Consequences.. Your in depth explanation of this Recording pretty much nails it. I actually love the Peter Cook pieces and l believe he did it all in one take but may be wrong. Great work
"One take"? Nope, try ten weeks. But, yes, a genius album.
sheet music is a wonderful record for sure.
L is the Creme / Godley record that knocked me out, Art School Canteen and all those explorations of adolescence told with wit and pathos.
L is one of the best albums ever
I picked up Freeze Frame first. L is amazing! Sandwiches of You!
@@sheldonwheaton881 yes that is a great song. Some times I sing that to myself and people are like what are you saying
"Come in late and go home earlier, one day a week or maybe less. So I lied about the funeral, I was really playing chess". That's Kevin!
This sporting life is exceptional
you scared me. 10cc and godley&creme are amazing sources of joy for me. 'one night in paris' is a masterpiece.
I bought the album for I'm Not In Love, but I wore it out playing Une Nuit A Paris. Still a top song ever for me.
Thanks Mazzy, good to learn about a group we don't hear much about
I knew all of this except for the Neil Sedaka part, I didn't realise that not only did they help him with his comeback but that he inspired them to get their act together and to pursue a full proper caeer as actively commercial artists, wow thanks, I learned something new today!
RAMESES - SPACE HYMMS is a strange record... Husband and wife with 10CC backing them up.... Fantastic Roger Dean cover.... Cult-ish feel to the music and concept.
I have that album, I think you're the only person since I bought it fifty years ago that had mentioned it.
This is the best version of 10 CC. sheet music to last picture show.
Great Record after Godly and Cream left but when the 4 of them were writing.
That was Magic.
I wanna rule the world always cracks me up 😊

Perfect video for me Mazzy. I love 10CC so much, since I was 6 or 7 years old and got Bloody Tourists. I completed my 10cc and Godley & Creme studio album collection on CD and then this winter on vinyl, only missing mirror/mirror which I found on CD in June. Finding that one on vinyl will be… complicated.
Thank you for diving into this today, the day I got my Mazzy t-shirt!
Cheers from Morten in Oslo.
You have great taste in music Morten!
@@SchitzyLipservice Thank you! 😊
Great album, Old Wild Men is one of my favourite tracks plus the added bonus of the God like genius of Eric Stewart.
Superb song, Hotel is one of my favourites.
The Beatles had a number one single with each of the members as lead vocal. George - Something
Ringo - Yellow Submarine
Not in the UK, matey, with Something at #4. And Yellow Submarine only hit #2 in US.
Who were the other two guys !?! 😎
What were Pete’s and Stuart’s #1 singles?
@@GizmoBeach Easy. Pete had 'Don't Let Me Down' and 'I'll Be Back' and Stu had 'Take Out Some Insurance On Me, Baby'.
they were a great little rock-n-roll band, then Ringo joined and they just became commercial after that
One small extra - after Godley and Creme broke apart Kevin and Graham formed a project called GG06 which you can find online - think they did 6 or 8 tracks and they are all great, almost like a lost 10cc album.
Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness on The Album Years podcast, their more recent episode, talk about Consequences.
I love 10cc they are such a joy to listen to
Hi Mazzy, under appreciated band...I saw them as a 12 year old playing in a local park.....yes a local park !
Yes, George Harrison had a No. 1 in "Something", a double A-side single with "Come Together."
@@tombeyerlein3813 thanks for the reminder
It should be pointed out that the Something/Come Together single only went to number 1 on the Billboard chart due to a policy change that took place just after the two songs peaked separately at numbers 3 and 2 respectively. As fortune would have it, Billboard instituted a change the following week where both sides of a double sided hit would chart together, allowing both to share the number one spot for 1 week. Also, if you count the Cashbox chart then the Beatles had 4 different lead singers with number 1 singles since Yellow Submarine hit the top spot on that chart (while peaking at number 2 on Billboard).
Only got to #4 in UK - where it counts! These outlying colonial foreign territories really don't count.
I'll get my coat...
That must be one of the greatest 45s ever released. Which was the A side ?
@@CasperLCat Something. Which also got all the radio play (without stating the obvious).
Big boys don't cry, Mazzy!
Their video for Cry is still kind of amazing. Love it.
You beat me to it! Reminds me of Costellos vid for 'I Wanna Be Loved'
The song is great too.
@@myoldmate Absolutely. A great song.
Thanks for this man, 10cc were brilliant. 'Sheet Music' my fave of theirs.
Debut album 10cc and Sheet Music my favourites.
That’s your #1 by George Harrison.
it went #1 everywhere except the UK.
Mazzy....you have gone and done it! Production values!!!!!! vocals....snappy guitar work! thank you so much!
Incredible vocals. No autotuning. True talents!
Still haunted by I'm not in love as way back then I extremely was, with it all wrapped up within the song like it's a time machine.
Neanderthal Man by Hotlegs is a song mixedback to frontwith the drums at the front and the vocals in the background, Brilliant idea.
🤠
Eric Stewart's vocals are exceptional, Run Away from the Ten Out of 10 album being a personal choice showcasing them. Such a creative group and great to see your video. Thank you.
Hipgnosis / Floyd-related footnote:
The futuristic elevator door interior (located at some hotel in the US if I remember right) used for the Sheet Music cover was re-used on the "A Nice Pair" cover from the same year.
I think "L" is a masterwork.
I used to have that one. L. Need to get it again.
Mazzy in the UK their humour is known as irony, I’m not sure you guys get irony…… Nice to see you talking about 10CC, I worked in Stockport and would see them around occasionally. I have their first 4 albums and remember playing Sheet Music to death
Neither are Americans very strong on self-deprecation.
Agree. Steely Dan goes over the heads of a lot of listeners in America too. They and 10 cc just get lumped into the yacht rock category.
Would Seinfeld be considered irony? If so, then Americans get irony. There's a certain Seinfeldian streak in 10cc....hmmm, what could it be?
Mazzy does it again! 10cc ... one of my absolute favorite bands! Perfect pop. "Sheet Music" is pure genius. Prefab Sprout (who I happened to mention in the comments of your last video) are their heirs; have you heard them?
As you mention, a big part of their "concept" is humor *in the music* (besides often in the lyrics). That makes them sometimes resemble Frank Zappa's music (who of course asked "Does Humor Belong In Music?").
Sorry I haven’t replied to your last comment. I have one Sprout CD but have really dived into them .
@@mazzysmusic Not to worry! (about replying) But have a look under the Relayer video. 😉
Prefab Sprout is well worth diving.
Love this band ✌🏼
Great band.
Strawberry Studios is, or was, about a mile from where I live. I pass the building most days. And I love 70’s 10CC!
“I pity inanimate objects” off Freeze Frame blew my 16 year old mind. Great album that was important with my musical education. I’ve sadly neglected 10cc for a long time so onto Discogs and Ebay for me. Thanks yet again Mazzy for re/introducing me to great music.
Well, they can not move.
In my view the 3 songs that were so original that they have never been bettered are Procul Harum - Whiter Shade of Pale (with a big tip of the hat to Bach), Queen - Bohemian Raphsody and 10CC - I'm not in Love.
You never cease to amaze me w/ your knowledge of bands. I am a fan of 10cc & never knew anything about them.
A couple of months ago I was at Vinyl Solution here in San Mateo, waiting for my turn while some other guy was flipping through the New Arrivals bin, and he pulled out a copy of Sheet Music right under my nose. Grrr!
😵💫😎grrrrrrrr🦄
I've always loved 10cc. Clever lyrics, excellent melodies & superb arrangements.
Great video! Loved this band in the 70s. Thanks for doing this one. And for all the other great content you create.
I've somehow ended up with two copies of Sheet Music. The track 'Somewhere in Hollywood' is an absolute gem.
Absolutely, Hotel is another favourite.
@@keithjones7390 Yeah, I agree.
Just this year a complete CD box set, "10cc 20 Years" was released, with 2 CDs of remixes and B-sides. All remastered with improved sound. Highly recommended.
I totally forgot about that set. Just ordered. Thanks Bill ✌🏼
Nice set. Kinda weird that they didn't include Mirror Mirror -- I'm guessing the ownership of those tracks is complicated.
I'd love to see someone like Vinyl Me Please or Analogue Productions do this
I own a copy of 10cc’s album, “The Original Soundtrack”. They had a mega hit with the cool pop song, “I’m Not In Love”.
Well-done history about one of most interesting and difficult to pigeonhole bands from the 70's.
Fantastic Album. Saw 10cc do this live in 1974(my first ever gig) I was 13.
Unforgettable!!!
Here here! Love this band. Unique and could craft genius pop songs. Craftsmen for our pure pleasure.
definitely one of my favorite bands and albums, especially the track 'I'm Mandy fly me' . . . Godley & Creme came after with 'L' another all time favorite

Sheet Music was one of my favorites from '74, not uniform in quality, but stellar in places! Experimental Pop. With Godley-Creme, it was to be expected.
Excellent Review of a Highly Underrated Group and Its’ Individual Artists.
Love Your Depth and Breadth Here.

First concert I went to was 10cc at Hull City Hall in 1974, absolutely brilliant. I still love listening to the first album, Sheet Music and Original Soundtrack. Are they in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame? If not, such a travesty!
