Never been a fan of the "we aren't building the taj mahal" saying. It means "don't care about quality just get it done because we have other projects to get to". If you hear a contractor say this, find another contractor.

OMG how awesome! I wish i had thought of the leveling you did with the wood instead of lifting the corners and digging and laying down gravel. So Simple. Love your channel! a fan from Canada for life!
I'm so grateful for this video. We have an area down the back of our garden next to our garage which has always been a problem area for weeds and brambles. Every year I spend days clearing it but it's actually only a couple of inches of top soil and a shed load of broken glass. So I've never been able to dig the roots out of the stuff that grows down there and I'm so limited to what I can do in that area. I can't use harsh chemicals to kill the weeds because of pets. It's quite a large area too so it's a shame. It just always looks a mess. I did think about putting a patio down there but leveling it off for that will be a lot of work and quite costly. I think after watching this, decking is the way to go. It will still need a fair bit of work to level it but not as bad as if I were to put slabs down. Decking is going to be a lot easier and quicker too. I've built all my own garden furniture but I've never built anything constructive before. I always thought decking was a lot more complex until I watched this video. I just now the transformation is going to be amazing!
I think that’s got to be the clearest and most helpful build tutorial I’ve ever seen. You are a great teacher ….. from all the way back in Leeds UK ….. thank you 😊😊😊
This is a great video. Im sixty and bought my house 7 years ago ( late bloomer) my current deck is rotting. This is definitely going to be my Fall project!! Thank you so much!!
***BEST.DECKING.VIDEO.EVER.*** I've spent hours watching how to deck videos. This one is by far the best and most helpful video for DIYers. Thank you SO MUCH!!! Love how simple you make it. Love that it's a family affair for you guys. Love the giggle at 9:23.😂 That cracks me up. I've watched this video SEVERAL times now to make sure I retain all the info. Now...I'm off to buy my lumber. Going to make my deck JUST like this. I'm going to make my children help me (insert a 9:23 type giggle here) and going to make it "straight and pretty". So so so so helpful! Can not thank you enough.
You know what, by the time I had 20 (yes, 20, there oughta be a law!) no shows over 2 yrs, I could as an absolute greenhorn have built the thing myself, while finding sales and salvage material to boot!
This was an awesome and informative deck video, I just stripped my 12x16 ground deck out and I’m changing it to a 12x12 with a 3’ pit in the center. 👏👏👏 awesome channel!
THANK YOU! Finally a video of a simple affordable deck that I can do myself! And tons of useful/helpful information. Plus step by step with advice the whole way. I appreciate this video & your help!
Thank you so much for this! I’m about to build a deck on a slight slope and have been very intimidated by doing it myself but being a homeowner and doing 1 million things around the house including installing hardwood flooring I figure it’s definitely something I can try my hand at. It just doesn’t seem so difficult 😀
Watching this video a few times gave me all I needed to know about building this deck. I did a 12'x12' to accommodate the gazebo. It came out perfect with only a few unforeseen delays (Star drill bit wore out, cordless drill battery needed changing every 20 mins and I thought 5lbs of screws would be enough but I needed to buy another 5lbs just like you said). Thank you for this video.
Hi, I'm so happy to finally find someone that isn't permanently fixing it to the ground (I really believe decking installers don't want you to know that you don't have to permanently install it). I've been watching videos on modular/portable/non permanent decking. So far I like good times decking system but I figured why spend all that money on a decking system when I can just buy the wood and put the frame together myself and buy the adjustable leveling feet that will sit on concrete pavers since I'm working with all dirt. I like your approach so much better. I can skip buying the adjustable leveling feet and just use the wood on the pavers instead. I don't know the proper term but did you make your deck flat or did you angle it a little so that rain water will go away from the building? Thanks for the video!
Great video. Easy to follow. I have some grassy dirt that I wanted a short deck on top of and this video did the trick. I laid down double week block material (I could find the thicker stuff). My deck is flush against the cabin so I could not screw or nail in from the outside. I saw another floating deck video that used hangers so I used those on the joists adjacent the wall. This is smaller deck (4.5 feet x 9 feet) and cost about $275 and about 7 hours working by myself. It looks terrific!
Thank you! I just fell Through my ground deck today so clearly I need to replace it. This video is very helpful. With just a bit more research I will feel confident to replace my deck myself.
this is as basic as I wanted it to be! :) I look forward to creating a ground-deck under my elevated deck, and have zero experience building with wood. Thanks for your easy to follow instructions!
BY FAR the best, most user friendly vid on the subject I’ve watched. And I’ve been watching a bunch lately in prep to do my 16’x22’ South Florida deck which will support a gazebo when complete. Thank you.
Thank you so much! Followed your advice and built an 8x10 (extension on my existing deck) in a few hours. Loved your idea on screwing backwards first to prevent splitting! Totally worked. Thanks again :)
Great video, thanks Jeff! 3 questions: If the ground is wet due to poor drainage, will just boards to lift it up be ok (should they be on anything, like concrete patio squares)? Should I pre-treat the ground to kill grass or put down fabric? Lastly, if woodchuck or whatever get under there, could they make just the wood brackets touching the ground unstable?
I have watched a few of your deck videos and i love them. For this i am a bit confused however. On the other ones you always say that the lumber needs to NOT have contact with the ground or it will rot. I also saw in the beginning that you had some cemet feet or whatever they're called but you don't seem to use them. What's the difference here?
i wonder that too. why not put it on just some basic 20x20 stone pieces instead? i am not expert, but as you said, that lumber that lift it up will rot?
This is so refreshing thank you! I'm just wanting to build a super simple wall tent platform. I've never built anything like this but am pretty handy. All the other videos I've seen are for floating decks using concrete and joists and so much extra hardware. I am definitely going to do it like this instead, except I'll use plywood sheets for the top. Thanks for keeping things simple and straight forward. No bs:)
I'm glad I found this as this is exactly what I needed instruction on. Great job explaining it in simple terms the video was great thanks from Houston Texas.
I love this!!! This is EXACTLY what i was looking for. A floating deck less than 30 inches in height (per Texas code). We just need to get out of the dirt as youve said. Love, love, love this!!!!
Thanks for the videos, very interesting. I'm building my deck (10 X12) over an existing cement deck (5X12). Thinking of cutting a few inches off my 2X6 (10 foot) joists for 5 foot length that will sit on the cement. Should I put something between the cement and 2X6. The cement deck as a good slope that runs the water away from the house. Thanks Luke
That's been a great help. I love a practical no nonsense approach. I don't want to do a decking that will last generations, i just want something that will last 5 years until i can afford to pave !!!
Thanks for the discussion on orienting the growth rings. A lot of the other videos on decks ignore it. I am strongly in the rainbow camp. If you install the boards with the rings facing down ( smile) you have problems. When the boards cup the rain water remains on the wood. Also after time the cupping puts and tremendous amount of stress on the screws that hold it down and the screws break with a loud bang! You are left with a deck that has numerous boards sticking up.
The area where I want to build has a slite decline my yard has has a slope can I use 4x4 in the ground to level or use the boards like you use to level off the deck
Great Vid. Thanks. I am building a 10x12 like you and wondering why you used 12' joists with 10' caps rather than the other way around. I figured I'd use shorter 10' joists and only buy 2 of the 12' boards. Thoughts?
This is great. Thanks Jeff. I have a question, do you have to lift the joists above the ground to avoid direct contact with the ground and preventing the wood from moisture?
@@chrispalmer4323 over the short term not a problem. Long ter (decade +), it is inevitable that breakdown will occur at ground interface. So you could purchase some thin paving stones to support throughout OR put down a base of landscaping fabric / 5/8 gravel (not fine gravel) to allow for rain water to drain below grade.
Thank you for this excelent class !!! Im from Argentina and i was cheated by a deck constructor. Now i have to rebuild everything by my self and of course, i´m gonna use your techniques.
I enjoy listening to his point of view. He has a simple approach and comes across as a friend who’s just eliminating all the BS and giving it to you straight and honest. Run for prime minister!
My only question on your beautiful deck is about the wood in direct contact with the ground. I know it is pressure treated but won't it eventually rot at the contact points? I was thinking I'd have to use pier blocks or something.
Thank you so much for this video! What would you do differently if the ground you were building this over tends to get the most soggy after rain, high sun exposure, and is in a somewhat humid environment?
Couple of questions: Are you worried the earth will eventually shift and knock things out of level? With direct ground contact, are you worried about rot where the supports are?
Thank you so much. I have been looking for a video to do some type of deck or patio. Our backyard is so small from the zoning, until no contractor will deal with it. But I want to make use out of what we can use.
I live in Houston Texas where the soil is clay in my area. Any recommendations on the type of deck build? Off the ground or ground contact? I'm worried about the deck sinking into the soil over time since it rains here quite often. The deck I have now is very old and has sunk into the soil a few inches. How would I prevent that from happening? Thank you.
Civil Engineer (geotechnical) here. Check you local inspection on this for your area. But the general idea with clay is that it swells and can hold water for a long time. Make sure your footings are at least 42” and about 18”. I personally prefer 24” wide to prevent movement. If the soil is constantly saturated increasing size/depth or number of footings would also help.
Hello, the pieces you used to level the deck and come into contact with the ground, how many are there or more importantly what is the proper spacing? And would it be good to put then on pavers so they aren't in contact with the ground? Thanks!
I loved this video and the tips. I need your help. I’m trying to build a 8x10 floor deck and wanted to know what measurements of wood I should use for the structure? TIA

Asked my GC buddy about this deck, he said its landscaping not structure according to code here, so build away.
Can you do a non simple deck? I want to see higher end projects, some of us know the basics, let’s see fancy!
@@grigs249 its a beginner deck. Not a done by a professional
Never been a fan of the "we aren't building the taj mahal" saying. It means "don't care about quality just get it done because we have other projects to get to". If you hear a contractor say this, find another contractor.
LOVE this video..where its reality base for most people.....just simple directions for a building the platform and the wear and tear of it and how many years its going to last and amazing price....wow the price for it is $600 bucks...to me its still expensive but you were HONEST too.....wood is pricey........and you gave us important details of the project about the oil base vs water base to keep the wood lasting longer....AWESOME VIDEO.....
Really appreciate how you break things down for the weekend warrior.
I think that’s got to be the clearest and most helpful build tutorial I’ve ever seen. You are a great teacher ….. from all the way back in Leeds UK ….. thank you 😊😊😊
This is my favorite video!! Simple, easy, fast!! Ive watched it so many times and I'll keep watching until I attempt to build it!
This is a great video. Im sixty and bought my house 7 years ago ( late bloomer) my current deck is rotting. This is definitely going to be my Fall project!! Thank you so much!!
This deck was a dream! We are not handy types, but managed to get it up in about a day and a half! It looks great
***BEST.DECKING.VIDEO.EVER.*** I've spent hours watching how to deck videos.
How is your deck holding up...
I actually feel confident in trying to build my deck after watching this. Thanks for un-complicating the process 😃
Yes much better and sturdier than the pallets decks. They're cheaper but this one will last a lifetime
Way to bring back the practice of being practical.
I’m in the same predicament 🤦🏽♀️
Me too did you do it? How did it come out?
Watching this video a few times gave me all I needed to know about building this deck. I did a 12'x12' to accommodate the gazebo. It came out perfect with only a few unforeseen delays (Star drill bit wore out, cordless drill battery needed changing every 20 mins and I thought 5lbs of screws would be enough but I needed to buy another 5lbs just like you said). Thank you for this video.
How many boards did you have to buy?
How many boards did you buy I’m looking to do a 12x12
Q: I want to go 20x24’ - what additional steps do I need to take?!
YOU ROCK!! 🙏🏼
Thank you! I just fell Through my ground deck today so clearly I need to replace it. This video is very helpful. With just a bit more research I will feel confident to replace my deck myself.
Would love a supply list if you have off hand? How many boards and lengths. Thanks
Do the math. 13 2x8. (4 for the outside, 9 for the joists). For your decking boards if you’re using normal 2x6 decking boards it’ll be 24.
Yes! When it comes to deck boards using the best side up is a much better rule of thumb than worrying about cupping.
Can you do a pergola roof next? I really want to add one to my existing floating deck.
That's exactly what I do, so hopefully he will.
Yes!!
Great suggestion!!!!!
this is as basic as I wanted it to be! :) I look forward to creating a ground-deck under my elevated deck, and have zero experience building with wood. Thanks for your easy to follow instructions!
I just watched this video and I really enjoyed it.. I've never built a deck in my life but this looks really easy
You can do it!
BY FAR the best, most user friendly vid on the subject I’ve watched. And I’ve been watching a bunch lately in prep to do my 16’x22’ South Florida deck which will support a gazebo when complete. Thank you.
I’m going to give it a shot. No idea what I’m doing but will learn as I go lol
You had concrete blocks in video but did not use them. Are the nevessary?
Wow love it , love it . I saw another one of your videos were you explained start driving the screw backwards to avoid cracks . Works every time.
I’m gonna need to combine this with your shed build for a little backyard studio and ideally wrap the deck around a cowboy tub

Best video I have EVER watched on RUclips, no BS straight to the point!
@@ZekeMagnum good question. I was also wondering why no vents along the front-side of the deck for better airflow underneath?
@@ZekeMagnum depends on the pressure treatment, there are 2 types, one can be in contact one cant
I wish I needed a deck now. Such good tips here. Only thing I think I’d do would be put weed barrier down first. The tip with the hammer is superb.
No bs:)
Awesome information. Love your presentation. No goofing around, just what we need to know.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is by far the easiest and best video I've seen to do this. Thank you
Yes, very creative and practical design and implementation!
Thanks!
I'm glad I found this as this is exactly what I needed instruction on. Great job explaining it in simple terms the video was great thanks from Houston Texas.
Glad it helped! Cheers Frank!
The no-nonsense approach really floored me... Nice trick the left turning screw to avoid splitting.
Thank you! Finally a building tutorial I understand I’m so building myself a little deck
Going to build a 20x20 version of this exact deck next month. Super excited! Thanks.
Have fun!
Well how did it go
Thanks for the discussion on orienting the growth rings.
Just wanted to say I watched your video on Thursday and built a deck between yesterday and today following your tips. Thank you!
Do you have plans for this? Like how many boards you used for the whole deck?
You can just count them if you pause the video at certain points. I count 26 deck boards for the surface. You can take it from there.
I counted about 40 total
About 12 2x8 and 28 deckboards
Use your eyeballs!
Use math 😁
Great Vid.
This was what I was thinking. I saw the cement blocks on the side but never seen at which point it was placed between the deck and ground 🤷🏽♀️
No, the woods is ground contact, you should be fine with it sitting on ground.
I’m building my deck, I have so many ideas for my backyard. Thank you for showing us how to get up off the ground and have a nice deck.
After getting contractor quotes for $9,000, I am totally doing this instead! You're my hero 🤘
I like how you give two ways to look at things but in the end you just say do what you want. Love watching this.
Plan and simple straightforward easy to understand so appreciated, great job. Thanks for the video
Thank you for this excelent class !!! Im from Argentina and i was cheated by a deck constructor. Now i have to rebuild everything by my self and of course, i´m gonna use your techniques.
Wow, I'm going to build one of these decks in my backyard.
right on.
Yes. Put it on deck blocks.
Thank you so much for this video! What would you do differently if the ground you were building this over tends to get the most soggy after rain, high sun exposure, and is in a somewhat humid environment?
Getting ready to own a house & it absolutely needs a deck. Thank you for an absolutely amazing video🤘🤘🤘
You're so welcome! Cheers Beatrice!
That tip about putting the crown up was really good I had never heard that. Thanks!
Couple of questions:
Are you worried the earth will eventually shift and knock things out of level?
With direct ground contact, are you worried about rot where the supports are?
Its for very very beginner level; i wouldn’t trust this at all in my yard
Thank you so much. I have been looking for a video to do some type of deck or patio. Our backyard is so small from the zoning, until no contractor will deal with it. But I want to make use out of what we can use.
It was actually exactly what I was looking for
This looks great! I think in the UK we lift it off the ground as we get so much rain.
Thanks!
Basically build a wall but leave it on the floor and cover with wood planks. Niiice! 😊
Pretty much!
Thank you for all your educational videos ! Much appreciated for this single mom ! 🙂
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
I loved this video and the tips. I need your help. I’m trying to build a 8x10 floor deck and wanted to know what measurements of wood I should use for the structure? TIA
