Good Job. Showing this to my husband tomorrow morning. Looks beautiful. This is perfect solution to cover our slopping concrete patio. Amazing. Thanks.
Joists are various widths.. if you want a flat deck, line the top of each one up with the top of the cross-member, then attach the hanger. You can screw another board on top of the joist and hang it on the cross-member while you attach the joist hanger.
Lowe's instructional videos are the best in the business. Mad props to your team!!! Just update you website please, the search functionality is frustrating...
Great work and nice tips. I’m not sure why some people come to these sights just to criticize good efforts...always negative people out there. This is the cleanest sharp dressed contractor I have ever seen. Your work is immaculate and very professional. I wish there were more like you in Ireland. My contractor botched my house and ran with thousands of euro I paid him.
I've learned the hard way. For the cost of a few extra floor joists, you should stiffen any shed floor or deck by laying the joists out 12" on center instead of 16".
Wow! Amazing to see how this project is done and how the right tools make a difference. If I wanted to build a deck, I'd hire a person like Jay, send him a link to this video, tell him to go to Lowe's, and then sit back and watch him build it!

very good illustration to do it yourself. thanks to his wonderful and professional guidance. Congratulations on such a good and professional job. do it later..and continue with your wonderful experiences in professional jobs like this..Thank you
Thanks for the detailed instructions and tips. I watched each relevant segment several times as I worked my way carefully through my pile of 2021 priced lumber. I just completed my modified version of this project today. (I changed the dimensions , used cedar decking and did a picture frame design for the deck.) For a fairly unhandandy man, I got great results. 👍
Thank you for such a clear description of how to make a floating deck. My only thought is that the opening around the tree would make an excellent entry for critters looking for a cozy nest. Maybe more wire there would be in order.
Don’t be fooled. You’ll find yourself hundreds of dollars out with a total mess in your back yard wondering how much cheaper it would have been to just pay a pro to do it. Been there 🤦🏻♀️still fun to watch though.
Hire a PRO lady. Your desire will be met with the realization that hard work and sweat and the unknown will all add up to an unfinished and often incorrectly built deck.
Wow very nicely and cleanly done and by yourself I need this i think if I could it but I would put private screen awnings up and a shade sail to turned out good
Building a 2nd story deck and wanted an underdeck oasis that was more than just dirt... this helped immensely! I did not know that you didnt have to dig below the frost line for a "step up" deck. Save a lot of digging/back pain! Thank you Lowe's for making content like this and keep up the excellent work!
On the center beam when putting on the joist hangers do you have to put screws or nails in at an angle? If not would they interfere with the hanger nails from the other side?
I learned the 3-4-5 method to make the angle squared. Cool! Great educational video! For budgetary purpose, may I ask what this project will cost the homeowners?
I think the ONLY thing I questioned over this nicely details video was not also meshing the inner hole around the tree to prevent animals from getting in that way. Otherwise, this was so thorough and I love it
great video! the base for the floating deck is what i'll use for my project soon. I wanted to build a little gazebo at my family home rooftop but i didnt want to drill into the walls or the tiled floor (its almost 50 years old). Any ideas would be appreciated! The only somewhat supporting structure would be one wall.
If I were building the deck, I would have used a perimeter of solid Trex square edge boards mitered in the corners with a slight overhang of the deck. Then install the fascia board below. Looks more finished this way.
Great video, thanks!! One note: Wouldn’t it be better to stretch your tape from end to end to mark your 16” intervals instead of marking each from the last? I believe your way may allow for cumulative error from one end to the other.

@@kimbenson118 The way he built that particular deck, with all its over-kill, it would cost an easy $2400-$2600. This particular deck shouldn't run you over $600-$800 for the average DIY'er (depending on area lumber costs).
11:40 You never know if your joists are all the same height. Usually there are minor differences. So it's better not to pre-attach the joist hangers. Use the joist you want to place at that specific point, line it's top up to the beam and attach the hanger. Go on using the next piece of wood.
Thank you so much for pointing this out. I saw the spacing and wondered if they allowed that type of spacing because it’s wood and would need some space to move and warp a little over time.

Stejay it can stay level for years, if done right. Check your local building codes. There are limits to height and weight of deck when using surface footings, along with what needs to be under the footing, also joist, beam, post, and framing layout as this spreads weight evenly over the footings.
Stejay no prob! This looks like harder ground, more clay content, like up north. If doing this in Florida or more sandy areas, go with some poured cement footers, or else it will for sure sink unevenly.
I was thinking, why didn't you put the deck outer length parallel to wall direction inside the concrete block sand then attack something outside for outer covering? Like bit extended on both ends for outer lining? Also in the middle length, rather than using brackets can both sides lengths been cut for square wood joint rather than brackets or is that too much hassle to do? I hope my question makes sense, I am new to these kind of things.
