There are two challenges with using a projector and a painted wall as I made mine back in 2002:
1.) The paint you use can either be eggshell white or you can try using, what someone below mentioned, and that’s a medium gray. The gray is going to deepen the darks in the show/movie, but you must have a brighter (lumens) projector to pull that off. Note: I stuck with the eggshell and have not changed it since.
2.) You will have to resist the temptation to just go big with screen size. First make sure you do not make too big by putting your projector on a ladder (with someone to assist, of course) and taking the time to adjust what will be your final size. You do not want a screen so big you feel overwhelmed and get that front-row cinema experience you get when you’re one of the last people to enter the movie. The extra time to put into this will save you the frustration of redoing the screen later. God bless!

I have a 120" screen with an LG pf1500 led projector I use every night of the week and it has a bulb life of 30,000 hours, there is no motion blur no downsides whatsoever, you cannot hear the fan, it's simply fantastic, thanks for a great presentation.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 7 лет назад

That's likely optimistic 20,000 hours is about average for those LED bulbs but that will still most likely be longer than the life of the projector.

But that tv has been for me less than year so it feels stupid to buy new tv especially because I would buy 65 inch then and it's stupid only uprage 10 inch. I went from 32 inch to 55 inch. Which 3x uprage. 55 inch is like 3 of 32 inch tv:s. Going for 65 is 1,4x uprage and it is bit over 4 of 32 inch tv:s.

I bought a BenQ W1070 three years ago and since then I never came back to TVs again. Projectors are awesome.

He said that it was "So balanced". Meaning that he was balanced in his approach and logic as to whether to get a TV or a projector. It had nothing to do with "how" clearly he spoke, or even whether he used proper grammar. It was all about the balance that he delivered both sides of the projector/tv situation.
Again, quite interesting that you went racial.

What another great video, man. All your points, after living with a projector for 10 years, are spot on! Also, gaming on 100" plus is nothing short of AWESOME!
One more thing you can do to 'combat' light in the room is use a screen distance/size calculator to figure out the shortest throw to the screen within about 0.5-1" worth of zoom and focus. This will let you 'tune' the projector to project the brightest, 'smallest', image tailored for your screen size. This combats ambient light some by just having a (much) brighter image than putting the projector in a neutral location and having several-tens of inches or feet worth of zoom/focus to use.

Completely agree. I have 2 Epson projectors at home. Including a shift 4K one in my living room, on a 100” screen, which replaced a 60” TV. Dark curtains did the trick for lighting, when there’s too much light coming in at certain times of the day. I always tell my friends, “once you go projector, you never go back”, and converted more than a handful of them. I only wish I had a bigger wall...

G'day, in the very late 80s, 88-90 I worked for a company in Perth Western Australia. The company had a few departments. Firstly it made commercials for television, secondly, it serviced Sony Audio Visual Equipment (Trinatrons, Monitors, VCRs, and Projectors), and thirdly I worked in the Hire Department, where we set up Sony Monitors, Video Projectors, PA systems, for commercial events. We set up massive screens in Pavilions, and multiple monitors for events like the Melbourne Cup, satellite feeds like the opening of the North West Shelf. We even hired a company, who brought the very first single bulb projector I had ever seen, to set up a massive 50 ft screen at Burswood Casino. You talked about cost, well that very first of its kind single bulb Projector I was told was worth $250,000 USD. Not sure what we hired the guy and it for, but it was beautiful. So were the typical sony RGB projectors, which I took home quite often to watch movies as they came out on Video. The world has changed. What was worth thousands, we now can have for 1/10th of the price, and it does a better job. Id still like to find one of those old Sonys. The Techs in our service department, were very elitist, they would not touch anything unless it was Sony. O wonder how they feel about the invasion of tech over the last 30 years. As a Military Comms Tech, I waked up daily to the world of Wild Palms(Great Movie) I envisaged when that movie first came out. VR and Holograms, lets hope we get to see them in the not so far future. You have a great channel and a new subscriber, I wish you well mate.

Before watching your video, I have to say, the answer is YES! lol. My husband and I have run a projector as our primary (only) livingroom display/TV for the past 10 years. 100" plus or go home! :D Started with a 1024x768 Viewsonic meeting room projector and a stereo amp, then upgraded to a 1080p Vivitech home theater/meeting room light canon of a projector and a basic 5.1 receiver, and as of a couple of years ago we're up to a dedicated home theater projector with the BenQ HT2050 and shopping for a new receiver (think we've settled on the RX-V483). We've long gotten over the minor downsides, just like people of yore who enjoyed giant rear-projection TVs. Our first screens were using special paint blends we found on home theater forums (AVS forum I think) and worked GREAT. Then got a 100" motorized theater screen later on for a steal... free shipping on a 6x6" x 110" long box? Someone took it in the shorts!

Hey majestechs I have a 36k home theatre (original MSRP) 5.2 setup with mains bi-amped...im telling you, you should sacrifice two of the rear surrounds to bi-amp those Polk audio towers...the boost In sound quality will amaze you and make much better use of those channels that hardly play any material anyways as most content is 5.1...check out your receivers manual to see if it has bi-amping capability...the tweeters and woofers in your mains will now have their own current resulting it much more dynamic range and overall depth...try it!

    • @haegeland
      @haegeland 5 лет назад +2

did you seriously recommend someone remove their rear surrounds to bi amp front speakers on the same damn amp? there will be no difference in sound whatsover and theres always upmixing in receivers that will make use of your rear surrounds even while watching stereo content.

Great video. The other major benefit of projection is being able to put your front speakers behind the screen, which lets you use three matching speakers up front (center channel can be exactly the same as left and right instead of having horizontally oriented drivers, making their dispersion patterns identical) which makes panning effects perfect and locks sound to the picture better.

No one below seems to get what he means.
Run a game in 4k or UHD blurayy in 4k run it into a hdcp 2.2 to hdcp 1.4 video wall converter. Most video wall converters have sofyware that matches the color and brighrness and overlap of multiple monitors or projectors.
Then you would have a Native 4 k projector setup capable of 10 000lumens gor about 1000$ less than any sony 4k projector that only has 2400lumens

Thanks for the comparison! I really like Ultra Short Throw Projector as they do 't require you to have the projector mounted on the ceiling or sitting in the middle of your dining table. Another big reason to go for a projector instead of a TV is that you won't have this huge bulky black slate of plastic hanging on the wall when it is off. Especially if you live in a smaller space you don't want to feel the presence of a TV when it's not in use! Thanks for the great videos by he way!

oh man this question was bothering me when I wanted to buy projector! because I had TV where input lag was very high and when you play FPS it's like you are being in the butter or something like that! but I didn't know which parametr is responsible for this and I didn't know what I should look at when I compare different models. in case of monitor/display it calls "response time" and I thought that's what I should looking for but it wasn't right because these are different numbers. pc's displays might have 1-10 ms when procetor migth have 15-30 ms and it calls "input lag"
so I bought one of the best gaming projectors (if you can believe in articles in internet) - optoma gt1080 (gt1080e) - input lag is about 16 ms. and I was shocked how quick it is! it feels like display! I was testing many shooters with mouse and keyboard there are no delays at all!!!

The biggest disadvantages of projecting in general...poor image contrast because of light bleed, at least if you don't have dark walls and floor. The brighter areas on the screen will light up the darker areas, due to reflections of the wall floor and objects. This sometimes can cause a dull picture in some scenes.
This is especially apparent with a checkerboard test screen.

I have had a dedicated room for a projector for eight years and loved it, but I wanted 4K, so I switched to a TV.
A 75" TV was cheaper than a native 4K projector. The projector screen I had was 77" so I only lost 2". Bigger is not always better, there is a formula for working out how big the screen should be with regards to viewing distance and speaker placement. If you have to move your head to follow the action on screen, it is too big or you are too close.
Definitely upgrade your audio, get a receiver and some decent speakers, 5.1 at the very least. Set up the dolby atmos if you can, put more research and time into getting the audio as good as possible. A 2D screen, no matter the size, is never going to feel as immersive as hearing the audio around and above you.
The only real benefit with a projector is size, but for the average user in the average room, the TV is catching up, and if you want 4K and HDR, TV's are already ahead of the game.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G !I have a 5.1 surround sound set up with a cheap Sony 520 amp that gets the job done with sound. I added 1080 DirecTV DVR and 3D Sony Blu-Ray player that can also access online content like Amazon and Netflix. My wife, 3 sons, family and friends love coming over and watching everything we can throw at it! I do have 2 new 4K TV's in other areas of my home but the projector is always our go to when it comes to TV time. I have replaced the light bulb 1 time and vacummed out all the dust a few times over the years. I spend about $2500 building my budget system. Everyone thinks I spent $1,000's more.

I agree. Projectors are awesome! I purchased my first projector when I was 14, this was a Samsung Pico (pocket sized) projector and ever since that moment I have been hooked on them. Many years has passed since then and I now have a 1080p DLP RGBRGB Optoma projector and the movie experience is just breathtaking. I sit roughly 10-12ft away from the screen with the projector directly above me and have my screen at 84" diagonal (may not sound big, but for a bedroom cum mancave it's as big as I can make it and still feels like being at the movies). :-)

Hey, very insightful. You brought up a lot of things I wasn't considering, specially about the size of my room and the screen size I want in the end.
    Thanks man

This was really informative. The best video on projectors that I’ve seen. Good job! Learned a lot.

Great job. I also own a BENQ, only a few months old. Had an Optima for ten years prior to that. Love the atmosphere of a dedicated home theater room, with a large screen and a quality projector. You were right on with your info. Audio is critical to getting it all right. Check out Orb Audio for incredibly accurate, high quality speakers without all the marketing hype and mark up. They are made in the U.S., and are fantastic. I use a Yamaha receiver and a Sony BlueRay player which provides most of the SMART TV features. I also run an Apple TV with it, and cut the cord years ago. Love our set up, and it is the place everybody wants to be for football season.

It's amazing how much 4k/HDR projectors have come down in price. You can easily find 4k/HDR10 projectors for around 2 to 3 grand. Maybe it isn't "native" 4k, but it'll still look damn good.

    Thanks,
very informative. So, when you add costs such as Roku, Audio system, installation, the cost comes almost similar to 80" television set.. What device I would need the projector to play television programs.
