Will be waiting a few years for 4k laser projectors to drop to around 1200$. Can't justify paying 2-3x times more for now. Good simple and well edited vid. Thank you. PS I've been a long time projector fan... since about 2007. The main reason I want to switch to a LED/Laser projector is not just because the bulbs go out quickly, it's that the overall brightness slowly drops and it becomes all about compromises: "Is it worth opening the projector tonight?" "I need to go out 30 minutes, do I turn the projector off?" etc.
I would love to wait few more years but i'm already on a 11 year old projector dying to be upgraded. I suppose I can save up for the Epson LS11000 for another year and just get that, otherwise we'll be waiting forever.

id rather just replace the bulb, what, every 2 years? By the the time you're onto your 3rd bulb, technology would have moved on and it's time to upgrade by then. The cost benefit of a Laser projector lasting 20000 horus is moot unless you plan of keeping it well after the technology has been superseded.
Totally agree with this sentiment. With my living room laser projector it's instant on and off and I don't even think about the hours of usage really. With my lamp projector in my theater I feel guilty if I turn it on for 30 minutes of gaming or whatever. And, yes, the lamp projectors subtly dim over time and in fact in my experience there is a steep drop off during the first 500 or so hours then it levels out for a few thousand hours where it very slowly dims. Wouldn't it be nice to not worry about that...

I am happy with my 4k dlp projector. However I love to watch your videos. They also helped me understand and choose projector when I was on market. Thanks Chris!
As I faced this choice a few years ago I made the final decision with a bit different reasoning. First I'd been using my HDTV as my computer monitor as well as my home entertainment TV. I can say that the hours add up very fast in that case. After some analysis of my typical usage pattern I came up with a stark realization. If you exceed the 20,000 hours of a laser PJ you need to be another PJ but if you get a bulb based PJ you can simply replace the bulb. Lasers have/had a higher up front cost than a bulb based PJ so I calculated my amortized costs and bulb based for a 4K PJ won out. A Laser is a throw away product while a a bulb based PJ is not. Those several years ago when I bought my PJ, the UST lasers were still not prevalent (China direct sales only) so I ended up getting a Optimal UHD65 4K and haven't regretted my decision as even though I've replaced my bulb several times (every 4,000 hours) I'm not seeing the technology depreciation that may have occurred with a 20,000 hour throw away product. Plus the calculations between buying laser ~5K vs bulb ~2.3K CDN PJ, at the time, is still working in my favor. I've kept my eye out for compatible OEM bulb sales as have saved a lot over having to buy when desperate.
these were exactly my thoughts when i was choosing my last PJ. a lot of people dont realise(mostly since industry hides this fact) but even though laser lasts a lot longer than bulb - once laser goes out you have to buy whole new PJ while with bulb based you just change bulb. average laser advertised to last 20-30k hours and bulb are anywhere between 3k and 10k hours. ive finally settled on Acer V7850 (that uses same DLP chip as yours in fact - bigger .67 version with better resolution than most 4k DLP PJs that use .47 DLP - although both use lens shift). ive been using it as a regular TV and so far am over 20k hours over past 2.5 years, which means if it was laser i would be looking to buy whole new PJ already. ive tried compatible bulbs but finally settled on using only original(Philips) ones and you can buy brand new original bulbs for under 60 bucks on Ali. wish i could go with ultra short throw PJ but they max out around 150 inches screen while mine does 300 (but you need good distance between PJ and screen. btw if you havent - try new Metal anti-lights screens - they are amazing but you have to watch no more than 20 angle.
@@tldrinfographics5769 yes, plus the projectors themselves degrade over time. I have an older Epson Home Cinema 8100 LCD (I think that's the model) in my theater and the image now has a red line at the bottom of the screen. So even though I could buy another bulb and the brightness would be back to its original glory the projector itself has failed over time (I think that model was first introduced in 2009). 20k to 30k hours is probably what most of these projectors can do before things start to fail. I got probably 10 years out of that model before I had problems but obviously if it was used as a living room tv it would be more like 7 to 8 years for typical usage.
I've had a BenQ HT1070 projector for a few years now and love it. It's first lamp lasted 8500 hours and it is projecting onto my 12 foot wide(165 inch diagonal) wall and the image quality is great. It is also 3D capable for movies and gaming which is a nice bonus. Lamp only costs about 75 dollars to replace. I bought it new old stock for 500 dollars. Only complaints is it puts off quite a bit of heat. My roommates don't like to run the air conditioner so on summer nights I got to keep the window open to vent.
is it ok to "stack" projectors? I was thinking 2 laser projectors with their screens overlapping to brighten it up or is that over kill and waste of money? it's a bright room
It's doable if you make a vertical stack mount for them. It is cheaper to buy two 4000lm projectors than one 6000lm projector. Keep in mind you don't double the light output doing this, you get 50% brighter with two projectors.
I was planning to buy laser projector until I saw this comparison. I have Epson 4k the same as what he had shown here which I really love the color, the blacks and it's bright also. If the only advantage of laser projector is long life, I will just keep my Epson. I am more on picture quality, I don't care about buying bulbs every few years. My Epson 4K has better picture quality and until this day every time I watch movie, last one was Maverick, I feel so amazed with it's brightness, clarity and color. Thank you Chris for this comparison, I almost wasted my hard earned money. Conclusion, I changed my mind.

Agreed. I'm most concerned about input lag when it comes to gaming performance; specifically why laser and LED have so much higher lag than lamp style overall.
Upgrading my cinema to 4K. Your videos are so helpful. I already have an optima non 4K lamp projector. Cost me £500 about 8 to 10 years ago. It’s way past the lamps half life but still going strong. The lamps used to be £147 but now they are only £30. Still not replaced it yet though. Think I will go for an 4K lamp projector after watching your video. Thank you.
Great video...quick question if I'm looking at getting a ultra short throw would I need a clr or alr screen? As I got a window and a balcony door that let's in quite a bit of light
I have the LG HU70LA. I'm very happy with it. picture is great, works well with my nvidia shield, it's quiet, plenty bright enough for my room... I'm a happy boy.
very carefully? Actually, they don't. The black floor level on a projector can never equal an OLED tv. However, they do use a lot of trickery to get decent black levels, either by tone mapping, and or controlling the iris and lowering the light that can escape from the projector. HDR on projectors is still nowhere near that of the performance of an LED TV since the NIT output of a projector can get nowhere near that of ANY tv.
It's kind of weird that a model like the LG810 isn't actually compared more to a similar model like the Epson 3800. The Epson has similar contrast and performance. It has good zoom range, and includes lens shift. It's incredibly similar to the HU810. Yet, it costs over $1,000 less. In fact, with 3 replacement lamps from Epson, and running it in low power mode, which still delivers 1,500 real world ANSI lumens, you get 20,000 hours of run time from the lamps for $1,000 less than the LG. To get a laser light source, which starts up quicker, and doesn't actually make a projector quieter, or brighter, and doesn't require to be changed every few years, it'll cost you 50% more money then then Epson 3800 with 3 spare lamps. The Epson 5050UB is a very popular model, because it is generally recognized as the single best looking projector under $3,000 on the market. Certainly worth mentioning, but lamp models with similar performance, generally cost a good deal less than the alternatives. Another major issue is that many laser/LED models come on 'lifestyle' portable projectors that don't have any zoom on their lens, which is problematic for ease of installation in any true theater setup. I would add that while UST projectors are really a nice idea, they are, BY FAR, the most difficult to deal with on a screen. If the wall isn't 100% flat, which most aren't, the image will bow in and out. Even good screens are often very slightly bowed, and the image doesn't line up perfectly. In a recent poll, only about 25% of users were able to get their image lined up perfectly with their screen when using a UST projector. The rest had to use digital keystone, or just got it close. In fact, if viewers watch your video, you can see that the UST projector in use doesn't actually line up to the top of the screen perfectly. Seems like a lot of money spent to not get perfect screen alignment. At the end of the day, laser and high brightness LED is the absolute future. Epson seems to be one of the slowest to understand this fact. But, we are seeing high brightness LED models from BenQ coming to market, and both Sony and JVC have moved to laser for their non-budget friendly lineup of projectors. I think that the big difference in some of these is their design intent. Portability, lifestyle, installation, UST quality, UST convenience. Lamp type is almost irrelevant. A DLP with a lamp looks the same as a DLP with a laser for the most part.
Thanks for this simple breakdown. Great content as usually. I do have a question about screens. Will any ALR screen work with a short/ultra short throw screen? Because I’ve seen specific short throw labeled screens but only come as big as 120-135 maybe. So if I could get a regular ALR screen for my short throw it would work? Is there any thing i lose?
No. Ultra Short Throw projectors use CLR (Ceiling Light Rejecting) screens. ALR screens often reject light from the side while CLR screens specifically reject ambient light from above which is why they're more effective at rejecting light.
@@ChrisMajestic Does the LG HU70LA have a replaceable LED lamp? I saw your video and decided to buy it, but I got it used. Usually used lamps mean you have to replace the bulb, however this is a nightmare scenario because as far as I know LED lamp replacements don't exist. This means I either just wasted $1400 or I can get LG to replace the lamp somehow?
It is possible that an ALR screen may work with a short/ultra short throw screen, but it is not guaranteed. If you are considering using an ALR screen with a short/ultra short throw screen, it is recommended that you consult with a professional to ensure compatibility.
I have a question about Lamps v. LED v. Laser. The new problem I have is the heat produced from my Dell S560T makes my small Movie Room considerably warmer. My question is are LED and Laser projectors better at heat production?
great video and explanation. I believe you when you say that laser has worse black levels but I don't understand why that would be the case. My understanding is that lasers scan almost like old school CRTs so I would think that the black areas would just be points where the laser would be turned off. Anyways I like your presentation style and I subscribed. Looking forward to seeing more of your content
Hey I have a question do you know if it’s even possible to ultra short throw projectors to reach the 2:40.1 ratio or is that only standard throw projectors that do that cause I know the all do 16:9?
Hey Chris, question for you. I have the Epson EX9200 Pro and I’m about due for a bulb replacement. I love the projector so I’m not going to get rid of it or anything but I was wondering if there is some sort of overhaul or upgrade lamp I could put in there? Not really sure how it all works and couldn’t find anything online. Maybe a bulb from a higher quality projector?
If you love your Epson EX9200 Pro projector, then you may want to consider upgrading the lamp to a higher quality one. You can usually find replacement lamps online or at your local electronics store. Generally, it is best to stick with the same brand of lamp when replacing it. But, if you want to try a different brand, make sure to do your research to be sure it is compatible with your projector model.
One thing that irks me a little is that LASER like LED is an acronym LED standing for Light Emitting Diode and LASER standing for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation so really they should both be all capital letters but language is weird like that so nobody does that. Anyway, awesome video man really informative!
Hi Chris! I just had this video popup on my channel. I have a question for you. Right now I have a Vamvo L6200 budget projector, and quite frequently the mirrors inside have to be cleaned because of dirt showing up on the screen. I am looking at the Epson 1080 to replace the budget projector I have. Do you know if I would have to clean the mirrors inside like I have to on the Vamvo? Thank you, Jim
problem with lcd led projectors is that 50% of light is wasted on lcd due to light polarisation, led is much better suited to work in dlp system that was also an initial problem in lamp 3lcd projectors but with complicated light path most of the problems were greatly reduced (but we still have black level problems)
@@Rokmononov modern reputable brands 3lcd and dlp can be indistinguishable at standard settings but not all led lcd projectors are 3lcd kind , those small units with celphone screen in front of led light source are a scam 3 lcd in general gives you more saturation in colors for the same white light output, than dlp and can have light blead between pixels ,but dlp gives you more lumens of white with bigger contrast from the same power of a lamp and can turn light almost completly for blacks. brands like optoma can sacrifice some color to achive bigger brightness and contrast in 4500 lumen range but overall it depends on a type of intended use, home cinema or office i work at a place that daily uses about 25 projectors of many brands and mostly conventional bulb dlp or 3lcd and we slowly replacing 2000-2400 lumen units to 3500-4000 lumen ones or big screen touch screens, because those work better in bright places
Which one will you recommend if I’m planning to open a mini outdoors cinema for neighbour kids on the local football pitch for around 50 people? Area for bean cushions seats 20 x 30 mts, night time, planning to build.a screen of 4x6 mts , nothing fancy
First let me take the time to compliment you. I have watched a ton of videos on tons of things over the years, your content stands out amongst even the really good ones. Maybe you can help me, I have a golf sim in my garage and it’s mildly bright. What’s a good choice of projector on a budget?
Im looking into using a lazer projector for outdoor movies / mobile drive ins any reccomendations on projectors that can give high quality pictures up to 100ft screen?
People with bulb-based projectors need to know that most of them can buy the bare bulb at considerable less cost than the bulb assembly. For my JVC RS-540 the difference for me is almost $300 dollars less. That means I can buy ~3.7 bare bulbs vs one bulb assembly.
True my replacement bulb would have cost $150. The con is convincing people that they need to buy a whole new assembly with the bulb. I got a bare bulb from from China on Ebay for $30. I have been using it for over a year now with no less quality image than the old bulb.
Hi Chris, Which one of the projectors would you recommend for displaying the image just on the plain white wall. So far I have nearly 10 years old benbq and it's time to upgrade but I'm in rental so can't mount the screen to the wall
I have a question I have the epson 5050 but moved into house my ceiling is vaulted/square I have a good spot for mounting both projector n screen but wife want a motorized screen the distance is about 15 ft apart we ate looking for 100in screen or would we better either a 120in
Do they make a decent projector with no speakers built-in? If you have a projector, generally you have a DAC and surround, maybe ATMOS, some prefer soundbars, but generally, nobody uses the built-in speakers anyway.
really wish the projector space would blow up so we could see some much needed innovation and affordability

Chris “don’t miss” Majestic!….another great video!, can’t wait for your Hisense L9G review. Just picked one up last week.
Spoiler alert: I'm super impressed
Thanks for this simple breakdown. Great content as usually. I do have a question about screens. Will any ALR screen work with a short/ultra short throw screen? Because I’ve seen specific short throw labeled screens but only come as big as 120-135 maybe. So if I could get a regular ALR screen for my short throw it would work? Is there any thing i lose?
No. Ultra Short Throw projectors use CLR (Ceiling Light Rejecting) screens. ALR screens often reject light from the side while CLR screens specifically reject ambient light from above which is why they're more effective at rejecting light.
lol
Excellent presentation! Well spoken and clear information!
Great educational video.. no nonsense intro and outro and other shit.. just simple plain facts packed for easy to understanding.. great job!!
great video and explanation.
Thanks for your superior updates your the man.
what do you think about the jmgo u2 pro or the jmgo s3? Am about to buy it id appreciate your opinion thanks
great content! thank you so much for these reviews.
i have a long throw now and want a ultra short throw laser. how does the surround sound hook up? all my wires are to the back of the room.
👍 Thanks for the info. Very valuable. Good demo!
What projector would you recommend for outdoor movie?
I have a almost 16 long by 12 wide room what size screen and projector you think I’m so lost I just need help starting it up .
Brilliant video, very helpful and concise. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
Hey Chris! What's the best/most suitable projectors for outdoor 24'/30' inflatable screens? Thank you!
Which are the quietest projectors?
Do you have any videos on projecting on black screens for truer blacks?
Can I tell you why I need to buy a projector and get your advice about which kind to buy?
problem with lcd led projectors is that 50% of light is wasted on lcd due to light polarisation, led is much better suited to work in dlp system
that was also an initial problem in lamp 3lcd projectors but with complicated light path most of the problems were greatly reduced (but we still have black level problems)
@@Rokmononov modern reputable brands 3lcd and dlp can be indistinguishable at standard settings but not all led lcd projectors are 3lcd kind , those small units with celphone screen in front of led light source are a scam
3 lcd in general gives you more saturation in colors for the same white light output, than dlp and can have light blead between pixels ,but dlp gives you more lumens of white with bigger contrast from the same power of a lamp and can turn light almost completly for blacks. brands like optoma can sacrifice some color to achive bigger brightness and contrast in 4500 lumen range but overall it depends on a type of intended use, home cinema or office
i work at a place that daily uses about 25 projectors of many brands and mostly conventional bulb dlp or 3lcd and we slowly replacing 2000-2400 lumen units to 3500-4000 lumen ones or big screen touch screens, because those work better in bright places
What would you recommend for golf simulator, needing a brighter light source.
Im looking into using a lazer projector for outdoor movies / mobile drive ins any reccomendations on projectors that can give high quality pictures up to 100ft screen?
what do you suggest for gaming in dark place?
thank you !
People with bulb-based projectors need to know that most of them can buy the bare bulb at considerable less cost than the bulb assembly. For my JVC RS-540 the difference for me is almost $300 dollars less. That means I can buy ~3.7 bare bulbs vs one bulb assembly.
Which bulb is it ? Where to buy. Thanks.
True my replacement bulb would have cost $150. The con is convincing people that they need to buy a whole new assembly with the bulb. I got a bare bulb from from China on Ebay for $30. I have been using it for over a year now with no less quality image than the old bulb.
Hi Chris,
Which one of the projectors would you recommend for displaying the image just on the plain white wall. So far I have nearly 10 years old benbq and it's time to upgrade but I'm in rental so can't mount the screen to the wall
black level difference is more about projection technology instead of light source, so DLP vs LCD/D-ILA wich do better job with blacks
Is there a short throw(laser tv) that can be installed on ceiling? Do you recommend them?
well explained, i am from India
Very good explanation.
Very informative. Thank you!
Man, your content is great! So informative, and easy to understand! Congrats!
Are you going to do a new best of year video for projectors anytime soon? I plan on buying a 4k
Thanks dear very informative.I also subscribed ur channel
Good shit, all my questions answered ! Cheers !
Benq SP840 do you think its worth for standard use films and console ? I could buy it used, cheap
Is the LG HU70LA the best 4K LED projector right now? I like the long lamp life.
Can you please recommend the best project or prohectors for outdoor large screen display?
What’s the Best projector for live sports like hockey ??

I have a question I have the epson 5050 but moved into house my ceiling is vaulted/square I have a good spot for mounting both projector n screen but wife want a motorized screen the distance is about 15 ft apart we ate looking for 100in screen or would we better either a 120in
Do you have any info on the Etoe E2 projector? Good or garbage?
What budget projector can i buy for bright or outdoor meeting setup?
Do you provide online consultation? I need consultation for purchasing a projector for my living room.
Thanks. good video, but it would also be good to see what the power consumption is for each of these types of projectors
Do they make a decent projector with no speakers built-in? If you have a projector, generally you have a DAC and surround, maybe ATMOS, some prefer soundbars, but generally, nobody uses the built-in speakers anyway.
