Totally agree with this sentiment. With my living room laser projector it's instant on and off and I don't even think about the hours of usage really. With my lamp projector in my theater I feel guilty if I turn it on for 30 minutes of gaming or whatever. And, yes, the lamp projectors subtly dim over time and in fact in my experience there is a steep drop off during the first 500 or so hours then it levels out for a few thousand hours where it very slowly dims. Wouldn't it be nice to not worry about that...

It is also 3D capable for movies and gaming which is a nice bonus. Lamp only costs about 75 dollars to replace. I bought it new old stock for 500 dollars. Upgrading my cinema to 4K. Your videos are so helpful. I already have an optima non 4K lamp projector. Cost me £500 about 8 to 10 years ago. It’s way past the lamps half life but still going strong. The lamps used to be £147 but now they are only £30. Still not replaced it yet though. Think I will go for an 4K lamp projector after watching your video. Thank you.
As I faced this choice a few years ago I made the final decision with a bit different reasoning. First I'd been using my HDTV as my computer monitor as well as my home entertainment TV. I can say that the hours add up very fast in that case. After some analysis of my typical usage pattern I came up with a stark realization. If you exceed the 20,000 hours of a laser PJ you need to be another PJ but if you get a bulb based PJ you can simply replace the bulb. Lasers have/had a higher up front cost than a bulb based PJ so I calculated my amortized costs and bulb based for a 4K PJ won out. A Laser is a throw away product while a a bulb based PJ is not. Those several years ago when I bought my PJ, the UST lasers were still not prevalent (China direct sales only) so I ended up getting a Optimal UHD65 4K and haven't regretted my decision as even though I've replaced my bulb several times (every 4,000 hours) I'm not seeing the technology depreciation that may have occurred with a 20,000 hour throw away product. Plus the calculations between buying laser ~5K vs bulb ~2.3K CDN PJ, at the time, is still working in my favor. I've kept my eye out for compatible OEM bulb sales as have saved a lot over having to buy when desperate.
these were exactly my thoughts when i was choosing my last PJ. a lot of people dont realise(mostly since industry hides this fact) but even though laser lasts a lot longer than bulb - once laser goes out you have to buy whole new PJ while with bulb based you just change bulb. average laser advertised to last 20-30k hours and bulb are anywhere between 3k and 10k hours. ive finally settled on Acer V7850 (that uses same DLP chip as yours in fact - bigger .67 version with better resolution than most 4k DLP PJs that use .47 DLP - although both use lens shift). ive been using it as a regular TV and so far am over 20k hours over past 2.5 years, which means if it was laser i would be looking to buy whole new PJ already. ive tried compatible bulbs but finally settled on using only original(Philips) ones and you can buy brand new original bulbs for under 60 bucks on Ali. wish i could go with ultra short throw PJ but they max out around 150 inches screen while mine does 300 (but you need good distance between PJ and screen. btw if you havent - try new Metal anti-lights screens - they are amazing but you have to watch no more than 20 angle.
@@tldrinfographics5769 yes, plus the projectors themselves degrade over time. I have an older Epson Home Cinema 8100 LCD (I think that's the model) in my theater and the image now has a red line at the bottom of the screen. So even though I could buy another bulb and the brightness would be back to its original glory the projector itself has failed over time (I think that model was first introduced in 2009). 20k to 30k hours is probably what most of these projectors can do before things start to fail. I got probably 10 years out of that model before I had problems but obviously if it was used as a living room tv it would be more like 7 to 8 years for typical usage.
I was planning to buy laser projector until I saw this comparison. I have Epson 4k the same as what he had shown here which I really love the color, the blacks and it's bright also. If the only advantage of laser projector is long life, I will just keep my Epson. I am more on picture quality, I don't care about buying bulbs every few years. My Epson 4K has better picture quality and until this day every time I watch movie, last one was Maverick, I feel so amazed with it's brightness, clarity and color. Thank you Chris for this comparison, I almost wasted my hard earned money. Conclusion, I changed my mind.
great video and explanation. I believe you when you say that laser has worse black levels but I don't understand why that would be the case. My understanding is that lasers scan almost like old school CRTs so I would think that the black areas would just be points where the laser would be turned off. Anyways I like your presentation style and I subscribed. Looking forward to seeing more of your content
Ultra short throw projectors have been around for more than a decade. I have an UST LG I'm looking to replace soon. Laser projectors are new to that game. I have used projectors for my home theatre since the 90s. Thanks for the info.
One thing that irks me a little is that LASER like LED is an acronym LED standing for Light Emitting Diode and LASER standing for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation so really they should both be all capital letters but language is weird like that so nobody does that. Anyway, awesome video man really informative!
The only thing I think this video misses is if the light sources are user replaceable. I daily run a VPL hw-45es. A replacement bulb is 100-300€. But I am fine with that. Super sharp picture and the lamps hold 3000-6000h for me.
Thanks Chris, a very helpful video! I'm looking at a Led projector, don't want to spend more than a couple hundred dollars & i won't be using it that often Thanks again from West Aus 🍻🇦🇺
I bought a Optoma hd20 back in 2007 for $800. Today 2023 I have replaced the lamp 4 times @ $50. = $200. So I added total lamp hours to 24,000 hrs. So for me lamps are the way to go. Led & Laser projectors go out its done and you have to buy another new one. My Optoma still running strong 16 years !
People with bulb-based projectors need to know that most of them can buy the bare bulb at considerable less cost than the bulb assembly. For my JVC RS-540 the difference for me is almost $300 dollars less. That means I can buy ~3.7 bare bulbs vs one bulb assembly.
True my replacement bulb would have cost $150. The con is convincing people that they need to buy a whole new assembly with the bulb. I got a bare bulb from from China on Ebay for $30. I have been using it for over a year now with no less quality image than the old bulb.
I have the LG HU85LA and struggle to get good skin tone color. It tends to be very warm and put a red tint to skin tones no matter what settings I select. Also, whites tend to be very washed out a lot of the times too. Still an excellent picture and brightness.
First let me take the time to compliment you. I have watched a ton of videos on tons of things over the years, your content stands out amongst even the really good ones. Maybe you can help me, I have a golf sim in my garage and it’s mildly bright. What’s a good choice of projector on a budget?
Just found your channel. New Sub 🦾 Shopping around for a projector. Your vidz are helping me out a lot! Also, btw, I can tell by the way you say "looomens" you must be from Baltimore. 😂
It's kind of weird that a model like the LG810 isn't actually compared more to a similar model like the Epson 3800. The Epson has similar contrast and performance. It has good zoom range, and includes lens shift. It's incredibly similar to the HU810. Yet, it costs over $1,000 less. In fact, with 3 replacement lamps from Epson, and running it in low power mode, which still delivers 1,500 real world ANSI lumens, you get 20,000 hours of run time from the lamps for $1,000 less than the LG. To get a laser light source, which starts up quicker, and doesn't actually make a projector quieter, or brighter, and doesn't require to be changed every few years, it'll cost you 50% more money then then Epson 3800 with 3 spare lamps. The Epson 5050UB is a very popular model, because it is generally recognized as the single best looking projector under $3,000 on the market. Certainly worth mentioning, but lamp models with similar performance, generally cost a good deal less than the alternatives. Another major issue is that many laser/LED models come on 'lifestyle' portable projectors that don't have any zoom on their lens, which is problematic for ease of installation in any true theater setup. I would add that while UST projectors are really a nice idea, they are, BY FAR, the most difficult to deal with on a screen. If the wall isn't 100% flat, which most aren't, the image will bow in and out. Even good screens are often very slightly bowed, and the image doesn't line up perfectly. In a recent poll, only about 25% of users were able to get their image lined up perfectly with their screen when using a UST projector. The rest had to use digital keystone, or just got it close. In fact, if viewers watch your video, you can see that the UST projector in use doesn't actually line up to the top of the screen perfectly. Seems like a lot of money spent to not get perfect screen alignment. At the end of the day, laser and high brightness LED is the absolute future. Epson seems to be one of the slowest to understand this fact. But, we are seeing high brightness LED models from BenQ coming to market, and both Sony and JVC have moved to laser for their non-budget friendly lineup of projectors. I think that the big difference in some of these is their design intent. Portability, lifestyle, installation, UST quality, UST convenience. Lamp type is almost irrelevant. A DLP with a lamp looks the same as a DLP with a laser for the most part.
Watching your video very carefully, still looking for answer for difference between LED and Laser projector (lets forget abt lamp, its 2029 😀). in case both has SAME ANSI LUMNES (brightness) which is better? and when u concluded this video, u concluded on "UST" Laser (TV) not like comparing with LG HU810P, Among x ansi lumnes LED projector and x ansi lumnes Laser projector, which is better
I've had several lamp based projectors going all the way back to the Infocus X1. Also, an Optoma DLP and 2 Epson LCDs which use metal halide bulbs. I recently got an Epson EF-12 laser projector and despite the low lumens rating (1000) it's actually watchable during the day in my living room and super bright at night. It would probably be okay for my 126" screen in my dedicated dark theater even. The quality of the light seems slightly different to me with the laser projector. The LG HU70LA can be had for less than 1k now and I may replace my theater projector with it. Bulb projectors can be good bargains but I'd rather stop buying replacement bulbs and not have to be conscious about conserving my hours of usage.
I bought that LG LED version just recently, enjoy it thus far. Chris' earlier review of that model contributed to my decision. I'm building a fairly light controlled theater, but it's not going to be used continuously. I couldn't "yet" stomach the cost of the Laser. Maybe in the future. I didn't want to worry about the Lamp cost so that was also in my decision making. I guess over time I'll see if it was a good choice.
@@georgepopescu1327 It may not be worth it. I think the Led offer enough pluses to outweigh black levels. I am not sure about their lasers now, but in 5 or 10 years they should be much better. People usually do not worry about black levels until you hit the JVC range of projector perfection.
@@project25055 well for be Epson Ub6050 is the bare minimum for black levels and that projector has only around 5000:1 native contrast. Those LED DLP's have horrible contrast, under 1000:1, so no, I won't watch any serious movie on such a projector. But I have a dedicated dark room. I agree that most people don't care about image quality and only few knows how images are suppose to look in terms of both color accuracy and contrast. Also I have seen people with Sony and JVC high end projectors in rooms with white walls so... I hope next led projectors from LG and others will improve on contrast couse they have very good software inside but hardware wise they just don;t give a sh- iet about it.
Agreed. I'm most concerned about input lag when it comes to gaming performance; specifically why laser and LED have so much higher lag than lamp style overall.
If you can get your hands on one you should review the New Epson LS11000/LS12000. It is a Regular Throw Laser Projector. I think its pretty much the 5050UB with a Laser instead of a Lamp. I ordered one but they are on Back order so i havent got it yet.
Some lamp type projectors are also "Ultra Short Throw(UST)" e.g.: "Optoma HD36UST Ultra Short Throw Projector 4000 Lumens Full Hd (Lamp)". "Ultra Short Throw(UST)" is not exclusive to Laser Projectors.
is it ok to "stack" projectors? I was thinking 2 laser projectors with their screens overlapping to brighten it up or is that over kill and waste of money? it's a bright room
It's doable if you make a vertical stack mount for them. It is cheaper to buy two 4000lm projectors than one 6000lm projector. Keep in mind you don't double the light output doing this, you get 50% brighter with two projectors.
Check out the advancements in Laser DLP. The projectors shown here are almost archaic. Just look how chonky they are lol. A front projector is no longer necessary. You get a tiny little box the size of a raspberry pi, more or less.. and the light engine projects (via laser passing through the DMD) to project parallel to the wall you've placed the device against (or hanging screen). For kicks.. one could place it inside a superficial beveled screen, to make it look like they have a TV on wall mount to keep the asthetic that they have a TV and not just a hanging front projector screen. In such a case, I kinda hope they do make a rear projector DLP TV that is thinner than OLED TVs (body of the TV)
Thanks for this simple breakdown. Great content as usually. I do have a question about screens. Will any ALR screen work with a short/ultra short throw screen? Because I’ve seen specific short throw labeled screens but only come as big as 120-135 maybe. So if I could get a regular ALR screen for my short throw it would work? Is there any thing i lose?
No. Ultra Short Throw projectors use CLR (Ceiling Light Rejecting) screens. ALR screens often reject light from the side while CLR screens specifically reject ambient light from above which is why they're more effective at rejecting light.
@@ChrisMajestic Does the LG HU70LA have a replaceable LED lamp? I saw your video and decided to buy it, but I got it used. Usually used lamps mean you have to replace the bulb, however this is a nightmare scenario because as far as I know LED lamp replacements don't exist. This means I either just wasted $1400 or I can get LG to replace the lamp somehow?
It is possible that an ALR screen may work with a short/ultra short throw screen, but it is not guaranteed. If you are considering using an ALR screen with a short/ultra short throw screen, it is recommended that you consult with a professional to ensure compatibility.
Great video...quick question if I'm looking at getting a ultra short throw would I need a clr or alr screen? As I got a window and a balcony door that let's in quite a bit of light
Hi . Thanks for the informative video, for living room can you pls suggest us models with following features: (UST ceiling mount is must ) - 3D - Eye protection - Smart OS - 4K HDR
I use a vivitek D952HD which is a boss projector that would work well for portability. It has dual HDMI inputs, native 1080p, DLP and 3600 lumens. The whole unit weighs around 3Kg
So I am looking at a LED unit. And I love a modest budget under $300 what is the best bang for the buck? I'm cool with sporting off brand, it's for the bedroom. Maybe 4hrs usage a week
I had lamp, bought LED a few years ago, & now got laser on the way... I think I liked the LED more than lamp, but I think that just goes to preference more than any real advantage or disadvantage, the laser is my first short throw projector though, so I'll see when it gets here... 😁
Hi Chris. That's a short yet clear info video.. I would like to know if the laser in UST is harmful? How's it different from the famously dreaded " laser" Thanks
Bro i just find your youtube channel, its incredible. Can i ask u some question? 1. Can u give me some suggestion. I lived in indonesia might be hard to find some high end projectors. Do u have any suggestion for the projectors? 2. If i want to put some 120” screenin a bright room how high ansi lumens do i need to use? Do 2200 ansi lumens will work? 3. I usually see movies in oled. Can high end projectors with grey screen replace the pitch black level and high contrast i usually get from oled?
I had a bulb in a lamp blow on me way back. I tried watching tv on projectors back in the 90s. Of course these models were presentation projectors. I didn't know jack back then.
I have a short throw projector, used it since well 2012 but not that often, lamp based. I project 104" 16:9 at around 1.5m distance and me and my parents installed projector and screen. At some point i need to replace that projector and I hope to be able to have more or less the same screen by then.

I'm looking at a Led projector, don't want to spend more than a couple hundred dollars & i won't be using it that often
Thanks again from West Aus 🍻🇦🇺
Wow you know your stuff. Thank you. 1st time buying projector
Man, this is a great off the chain analysis. Helps me to make my decision. Thx!
People with bulb-based projectors need to know that most of them can buy the bare bulb at considerable less cost than the bulb assembly. For my JVC RS-540 the difference for me is almost $300 dollars less. That means I can buy ~3.7 bare bulbs vs one bulb assembly.
Which bulb is it ? Where to buy. Thanks.
True my replacement bulb would have cost $150. The con is convincing people that they need to buy a whole new assembly with the bulb. I got a bare bulb from from China on Ebay for $30. I have been using it for over a year now with no less quality image than the old bulb.
Great info. No fluff. An actual recommendation! Huzzah!
black level difference is more about projection technology instead of light source, so DLP vs LCD/D-ILA wich do better job with blacks
I have the LG HU85LA and struggle to get good skin tone color. It tends to be very warm and put a red tint to skin tones no matter what settings I select. Also, whites tend to be very washed out a lot of the times too. Still an excellent picture and brightness.
Thank you for your knowledgeable comparisons. God bless you.
First let me take the time to compliment you. I have watched a ton of videos on tons of things over the years, your content stands out amongst even the really good ones. Maybe you can help me, I have a golf sim in my garage and it’s mildly bright. What’s a good choice of projector on a budget?
Chris “don’t miss” Majestic!….another great video!, can’t wait for your Hisense L9G review. Just picked one up last week.
Spoiler alert: I'm super impressed
Am waiting this video
I have been asking
Thank you Chris for listening to us
Just found your channel.
A DLP with a lamp looks the same as a DLP with a laser for the most part.
well explained, i am from India
Brilliant video, very helpful and concise. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks. good video, but it would also be good to see what the power consumption is for each of these types of projectors
Led is just a night or low light projector. LG makes amazing LED projectors and I doubt you will miss the fomo of laser once prices start dropping.
@@project25055 actually that laser from LG has a very low contrast with horrible black levels
I hope next led projectors from LG and others will improve on contrast couse they have very good software inside but hardware wise they just don;t give a sh- iet about it.
very well explained. super helpful for my needs with learning
I wish you had also talked about the differences between the three techs when it comes to gaming.
Agreed. I'm most concerned about input lag when it comes to gaming performance; specifically why laser and LED have so much higher lag than lamp style overall.
Great insights. Thanks for putting this video together 🙌
If you can get your hands on one you should review the New Epson LS11000/LS12000. It is a Regular Throw Laser Projector. I think its pretty much the 5050UB with a Laser instead of a Lamp. I ordered one but they are on Back order so i havent got it yet.
ty for your original videos/channel and congratulations making it CM
U cover them all
Thank you for made me expert 😌
You have a great speaking voice. Great articulation!
Man ..CANT WAIT to get my VAVA CHROMA👌👍
Excited for the Chroma Review 😄 greetings from Germany 👋🏻👋🏻
mm yes a question I've literally never thought of but had to hear the answer once someone mentioned it
Some lamp type projectors are also "Ultra Short Throw(UST)" e.g.: "Optoma HD36UST Ultra Short Throw Projector 4000 Lumens Full Hd (Lamp)". "Ultra Short Throw(UST)" is not exclusive to Laser Projectors.
Great educational video.. no nonsense intro and outro and other shit.. just simple plain facts packed for easy to understanding.. great job!!
What about using a black screen to help with black levels?
is it ok to "stack" projectors? I was thinking 2 laser projectors with their screens overlapping to brighten it up or is that over kill and waste of money? it's a bright room
It's doable if you make a vertical stack mount for them. It is cheaper to buy two 4000lm projectors than one 6000lm projector. Keep in mind you don't double the light output doing this, you get 50% brighter with two projectors.
thank you for the information
Another great quality video! Thanks for posting!
ALR screens often reject light from the side while CLR screens specifically reject ambient light from above which is why they're more effective at rejecting light.
lol
Excellent presentation! Well spoken and clear information!
6:46 the Black levels on the Black Panthers were extra-Black, well done
Nice comparison and very helpful. Can you also do a review about XGIMI's laser projector AURA?
Hi Chris, whats your take on the Viewsonic X1000 4k LED UST?
Hi how's it?
You should get one of the new JVC laser projectors in when they reach consumers in a couple months
it's in the works :)
@@ChrisMajestic yeah buddy. Very excited for you.
Great video...quick question if I'm looking at getting a ultra short throw would I need a clr or alr screen? As I got a window and a balcony door that let's in quite a bit of light
?
Very helpful my friend but was going ask about eco friendliness ? Any side affects?
Man, your content is great! So informative, and easy to understand! Congrats!
Thanks for your superior updates your the man.
Hi . Thanks for the informative video, for living room can you pls suggest us models with following features:
(UST ceiling mount is must )
- 3D
- Eye protection
- Smart OS
- 4K HDR
Thanks dear very informative.I also subscribed ur channel
Can I tell you why I need to buy a projector and get your advice about which kind to buy?
ls amp also called DLP? what is the difference between LED and LCD?
Hey Chris! Wondering what you're thoughts are on best portable projector for under $1500 is... Keep up the amazing work, very professional
I use a vivitek D952HD which is a boss projector that would work well for portability. It has dual HDMI inputs, native 1080p, DLP and 3600 lumens. The whole unit weighs around 3Kg
great content! thank you so much for these reviews.
Well done 👑
Excactly the vdo I was lookin fer
Useful! Many thanks!
So I am looking at a LED unit. And I love a modest budget under $300 what is the best bang for the buck? I'm cool with sporting off brand, it's for the bedroom. Maybe 4hrs usage a week
Muy buena explicación, fue de gran ayuda. Gracias
Very informative. Thank you!
👍 Thanks for the info. Very valuable. Good demo!
How's it different from the famously dreaded " laser"
Thanks
Can these laser projectors be placed on ceiling with picture flipped?
They can but they work better below because it allows you to use a ALR screen and reject ambient light from above.
i own LT, ST, UST and UST for indoors and the rest for outdoor
Bro i just find your youtube channel, its incredible. Can i ask u some question?
1. Can u give me some suggestion. I lived in indonesia might be hard to find some high end projectors. Do u have any suggestion for the projectors?
2. If i want to put some 120” screenin a bright room how high ansi lumens do i need to use? Do 2200 ansi lumens will work?
3. I usually see movies in oled. Can high end projectors with grey screen replace the pitch black level and high contrast i usually get from oled?
Good shit, all my questions answered ! Cheers !
Hey Chris! What's the best/most suitable projectors for outdoor 24'/30' inflatable screens? Thank you!
I had a bulb in a lamp blow on me way back. I tried watching tv on projectors back in the 90s. Of course these models were presentation projectors. I didn't know jack back then.
I had a bulb blow iin my Sony PJ, PJ was directly above my seating
what should I go for for low (under $50) budget, in a bright room
Chris please a video about Native Eesolution vs Pixels Shifting
Chris, you're great presenter.
Very good explanation.
I have a short throw projector, used it since well 2012 but not that often, lamp based. I project 104" 16:9 at around 1.5m distance and me and my parents installed projector and screen. At some point i need to replace that projector and I hope to be able to have more or less the same screen by then.
Excellent explanation !
