    • @craigbrockman7893
      @craigbrockman7893 11 месяцев назад

      @@ChrisMajestic I don't doubt it. But right now my panel is on an arm that swings out and can pivot about 80 degrees. It makes it easier to see via the couch which is off to the side from the wall. I am sure the viewing angle of the short throw would work, but it wouldn't be optimal for regular viewing. It would be like being on the "extreme" side of a movie theater near the first few rows. Maybe OK for one flick if you really want to see it. But for regular viewing, maybe not so much.

    To be honest, on the first point (brightness) - I have an LG OLED in my living room as the main TV and it's just as un-useable during the day in any scene that isn't super-bright with the curtains open as my projector is, although because of reflection rather than brightness. So while it's a factor, I don't think projectors suffer all that much more now than high end TVs do.

  • @TheCrazyStudent
    @TheCrazyStudent 8 месяцев назад

    Very good and valid points in the video. One thing that speaks in the favor of projectors in regards to big picture installations is the ease of transporting everything to your living room. If money is no concern, then sure, it’s always possible to go out and buy an expensive 100” OLED, but how are we going to get that 100” beast inside the living room to start with? Let’s say you live in an apartment that does have a more than 100” wall in the living room. Then that’s fine but how do we even get an OLED of that size into the apartment? In most cases it probably doesn’t even fit into the elevator going up to the apartment.
    A projector however solves that problem right away.
    So yes, I absolutely agree that projectors are still the king when it comes to very big sized pictures. Not only for the cost, but also for ease of installation.

  • @oliverlison

    Why does image quality deteriorate after changing the lamp a few times? I know that the brightness of a lamp will be reduced as the lamp ages.
    Is it because of dust settling on the elemets, such as the colour wheel and DMD? Or because the LCD gets bleached by the light source/lamp?

  • @Zebra66

    A good way to get around the ambient light issue with ultra short throw projectors is to build a rear projection setup.
    UST projectors solve all the previous issues with needing lots of space and mirror rigs for rear projection. You can hide the projector behind the drywall behind the screen.
    Dark rear projection screen material is significantly cheaper than ALR screens and works far better for daytime viewing.
    The downside is that UST lenses are not as clear as regular throw. So there's always some compromise.

I've got my apt super-dialed in terms of screen placement, with projector on a shelf above our heads as we sit on the couch. It would be a perfect setup if it weren't for the damn noisy fan! What's weird is, I'm on my 3rd projector now, and the fans seem to keep getting LOUDER with each new one I buy. Just set up a new projector today that I bought because it had the lowest db fan measurement of all 11 units in a comparision/shootout... and it still seems WAY too loud. Sounds like a running microwave oven 5 feet from our heads

    Image quality can go down due to multiple bulb replacements? Please expand.

  • @Toco_head
    @Toco_head 10 месяцев назад

    1. Image Quality: Projectors may not provide the same level of image quality and clarity as high-end LED or OLED TVs. The picture can appear less vibrant, especially in brightly lit rooms, and the resolution might not match the latest 4K or 8K TVs, affecting details and sharpness.
    2. Space and Environment: Projectors require a dedicated space with controlled lighting conditions. Ambient light can wash out the projected image, making it necessary to have a dark room, which may not be practical for everyone.
    3. Noise and Maintenance: Projectors often have cooling fans that can be noisy during operation. Additionally, they require periodic maintenance, such as changing bulbs or cleaning filters, which can be an added expense and inconvenience.
    4. Room Size: Projectors are more suitable for larger rooms due to their need for a certain distance between the projector and the screen or wall. In smaller living spaces, it can be challenging to achieve the desired screen size and viewing distance.
    5. Portability: If you need a display that you can easily move around, projectors may not be the best choice. They typically require ceiling or wall mounting and can be bulkier and less portable compared to a flat-screen TV, which can be mounted on a wall or placed on a stand with ease.
    Considering these factors can help you decide whether a projector is the right choice for your specific needs and living space.

    I think a lot of people underestimate how different projections are. With a TV you are literally having an intense light beamed into your eye. A projecter simply bounces the light off a screen or wall, making it far less stressful on the eyes to view.

    I would only go with a Short-Throw PJ, with a Throw Ratio of anywhere from 0.5:1 to 0.9:1. Not one where the TR starts at around 1.3:1 and with the zoom, goes up to almost 3.0:1. Those are useless form home use. With USTs, the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages, so I would nevr use one of those.

    Its an amazing puchase for only 130 euros and its also under 100w power draw (still more than double of my 40" tv).
    Amazing movie watching quality upgrade though, need to add bluetooth sound bar (projector has this option for extra bluetooth speaker) and maybe cheap gray screen for complete package which likely end up being around 200 total (projector 130, screen 30~40, soundbar 40~60). Definatly better quality viewing experience than my aging tv.

    I've had multiple chinese projectors. I do not recommend them at all, they all have broken within 2-3 months (spots on projection that cannot be fixed) . All of them I got switched for warranty, current warranty I replaced it 3 times already. I am thinking at taking this new replaced projector to an electronist to modify it in advance - replace the fans with efficient ones, and to also program the fans to keep going after I stop it, because if it remains hot the moment I stop it, it's gonna fry itself up until it cools down. A good projector that won't do that is much more expensive than the chinese ones. Overall, I cannot recommend either, unless you are planning on doing what I do and modify it's cooling system. my projector costs ~120$ and the quality is very good and it is 1080p. it's a pity they produce them to the point where you have a qualitivative projection, but it gets broken so easily. or maybe I am doing something wrong and use it too much? I sometimes use it over 5-6 hours in one sitting. Is it something I need to change to prevent it fcking up the projection? Anyone with experience that knows ?

    Lamp life isnt as much issue as is writen all over internet. 95% of ppl use projector primary for movies, thats like 2 hours every few days. 2 hours a day is 5 and half year. Dunno what is avarage lamp price, but for epson 9400 its like 150euro, thats not that much for 5 years.
    I use mine primarily for xbox gaming, few hours a day, currently at 4034 hours and lamp is still good.
    Lifespan of lamp doesnt meant that it just dies after 4k hours It means lamp will lose part of its brightness, i think its like 50% at 4k hours (statistically), that means every hour of lamp use you lose tinny bit of brightness, same goes for laser and Led, but these are like 20% brightness loss at stated lifespan so in the end, led/laser will probably end up as garbage befor lamp dies.
    Led/laser lamps are much more expensive to replace, most of the times its cheaper to buy new projector.

I can have my house fully lit, and my projector’s image is still always excellent. 4,000 lumens, 120 inch image, surround sound and all movies are better than the theater. Projectors are for game-rooms and living rooms, TV’s are for bedrooms!

The none standard way if specing out lumens rating is not good for the industry. Who cares if you need to close the curtains if you can get and ultra short in 10k ansi lumens.

    I recently went down the projector rabbit hole to get set up in my medium sized apartment living room with a 110” screen. I ended up returning everything and deciding to just upgrade my 65” OLED to a new 77“. I think projectors are great if you can get your room dialed in but I made the mistake of thinking I could just buy a screen, buy a projector and call it a day. The main problem I ran into is eyestrain. The screen was probably too big for my viewing angle for starters, but the main issue was brightness; in order to get the image bright enough where I was happy with it, I had to have the projector way too bright for a pitch dark room, thus creating an uncomfortable contrast level. HDR relies on high contrast to pop, so it’s a difficult situation unless you have a very well calibrated home theater set up (dark walls, dark ceiling, correct gain screen, proper viewing distance, correct amount of ambient light, etc.) and probably a much better projector than I wanted to buy (I maxed out an an Epson 5050ub for $3k). There’s a lot you have to get right to make a set up really good. I just want to remind people of that who are maybe now where I was a month ago. A projector set up can be a very expensive way to get a worse quality image than an OLED will give you. If you really care about video quality, a good projector set up is going to take some time and money. That being said, if you get it all right, projectors are amazing! When I buy a house I’ll definitely try again with projectors. But for now, large OLED was a lot less headache for a size (and quality) upgrade in my apartment. Good luck!

      Projectgors are low-rez to start with. HD or WUXGA, very few of them true UHDs, as most of them are "Faux-K" Fake-4Ks (except for JVCs, but the cost a mint). HDR is crap. With a display, TV, or PJ. Not worth bothering with. If you need to go over 100-inch screen size, you are much better off with a video wall, threre are those that are 150-inches diagonally just by attaching 2 pieces mounted onto the wall.

    There is one other significant reason NOT to buy a projector not mentioned above: sensitivity to rainbow effect artifact (RBE). Most projectors intended for home use currently on the market are single-DLP. Single-DLP projectors necessarily have to use sequential color, and sequential color always produces color breakup artifact, more popularly known as RBE. Though most people are not sensitive to it, or learn how to tune out its headache-inducing effects, there will always be individuals who have very short retina persistence times they see the individual primary colors as they flash in succession, instead of having them ideally meld into a composite full-color image. RBE is determined by such factors like type of video sources being viewed, viewing conditions, and individual sensitivity. Since it is unpredictable, professional venues (like cinemas) will never ever use any single-chip projector; they exclusively use 3-chip projectors. To guarantee absolute absence of RBE, the only way is with 3-chip projectors, and the only manufacturers who exclusively make and sell 3-chip for home use are epson (3-LCD) and sony and jvc (3-LCoS). If 3-chip projectors are too expensive for you, just stick with a big TV instead of subjecting yourself to potential RBE punishment. TVs don't produce RBE.

      RBE is because of Color wheel . There are 3RGB-LED projectors with 3 leds (red, green and blue ) instead of 1 led and they don't have RBE problems with 1 Dlp projectors. I had one projector like that and I can confirm there is no RBE problems . But I will never buy a laser projector or led projector again because the light source is unchangeable .

    Honorable mentions:
    - Fan noise
    - Different projectors can have different quirks that you won’t find on any TV such as re-syncing every time the input signal changes in any way. (Up to 5secs. And sometimes doesn’t sync the first time.)
    - DLP projectors can be a space heater.
    - Will possibly need an expensive fiber optic hdmi cable for high-quality at long runs.
    - Remote control is typically horrible.
    - when listening to music if you want to make any adjustments to the sound via on screen display of an AV receiver you have to turn your projector on which adds fan noise and uses lamp life And you cannot turn projectors on and off quickly.

After 4-5 years of normal usage usual faults like led dimming issues, screen Burns, lighting leeks etc. So given that fact, I would not let that be a deciding factor for choosing a projector
