      You should check out Angela Clayton's channel on youtube. She does sewing vlogs which might be helpful for you to watch. Also, something she usually does is make a mock up of cheap fabric to make sure that things fit before she cuts out and constructs the dress in the fancy fabric.

    Even if it's not accurate to Dorothy's dress, you could remove the zipper and add a lace up corset back. Then it would fit better and you wouldn't have to worry about adding more fabric.

      Potassuim_Cation
      Quite often, when I make a mock-up...it doesn’t really help in the end, because it’s not the exact same fabric, than the one, I use for the actual garment. So that will sit/fit/fall differently anyways. I‘ve taken to measuring the pattern pieces and comparing them to existing garments. And when in doubt, I baste first. Also means less waste. Always hated, wasting so much fabric on something, that wouldn’t actually get worn.

    • @CoverediCake
      @CoverediCake 5 лет назад +12

      Potassuim_Cation I did a super nice mock up, feeling so proud and then the actual dress ended up 2 inches to small 🤣

    • @SirenaSpades
      @SirenaSpades 5 лет назад +3

      mockups are for designers who are using drawings of the designs... not for patterns

    • @darklymoonlit
      @darklymoonlit 5 лет назад +9

      @@SirenaSpades Definitely not true. Mock-ups aren't at all mandatory (and aren't always ideal depending on the type of fashion fabric you're using), but they can help better fit a pattern, especially for more structured garments, and can prevent a lot of frustration. It can also keep you from making mistakes with your fashion fabric.
      If someone's more comfortable making a muslin for a pattern, commercial or drafted, first then they should absolutely do it.

    you can totally do big gathers with the machine! you just have to go a little slower and make sure you arent bunching it all in one place and just pushing the bunch forward, you want to spread it out as you go! you can also gather from both sides and meet the gather in the middle to make it a little easier! hope that helps!
    also it came out so good! and as someone who has been sewing basically my whole life its been really fun to see you improving with every video!

    Easiest way to gather a skirt is with floss.
    Take a long piece of floss, lay it down on the fabric.
    Put a large zig zag stitch in the machine and sew along the floss, making sure you don't sew the floss into the fabric but encase it between the stitches.
    When you're done, pull the floss to gather and you're done.
    All gathered and minty fresh.
    Gretchen Hirsch shows how it's done in her simple gathered skirt on YT.

    A couple of tips: The first thing that every novice sewer learns right away (and every person learns it the hard way), is that pattern sizing is different than ready-to-wear sizing. example Size 9 or 12 in Macy's is not necessarily a Simplicity size 9 or 12. You have to go by the measurements in the back of the pattern catalog or on the envelop. Also, buy some cheap muslin (using your 40% coupon) to make a rough trial run of the main pieces of your pattern. You don't want to waste your expensive or limited amount fashion fabric by cutting it wrong.

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  5 лет назад +8

      Good to know! Although for this specific pattern the measurements were accurate to my size so I think I just messed up somewhere else hahaha

    • @lizzieophelia
      @lizzieophelia 5 лет назад +7

      That is partially because they are closer to original (aka vintage) sizing, not the vanity sizing that mass fashion uses these days.

      @EnchantedRoseCostumes 5 лет назад +5

    Good job Rachel! Also, a good way to gather with a machine is to take some thin cord/string, and set your machine to sew a zig zag over the top of it. When you're done, you just pull the fabric so it bunches along the cord. I don't know if that helps, but I look forward to seeing you create more wonderful costumes!

    I really like the... floof? of the dress. When you twirl and the dress flows out but since the dress has such a long hemp at the bottom it stayed down. I love that.

  • @bertuccigirl

    Awesome job! Hint for gathering by machine: get crochet thread or a very thin string) set machine to the widest zig zag stitch. Put crochet thread down the middle of the foot on the machine, and zigzag over the thread so the thread doesn’t get caught, just held down. Then pull that string to draw up the gathers! Great job with the bias tape for the strip on the skirt! That is the same way you make bias binding for a quilt, etc. I think you did great all the way around, sewing patterns are not the most intuitive things to read! Don’t go by your normal clothing size either, use the measurements on the envelope. The size you are in a sewing pattern will always be a lot bigger than ready to wear clothes. It is hard when you want to just jump right into sewing the garment but take time to do a mock up, you will never be sorry. Use old sheets or whatever to make the mock up and then you will know where to make adjustments. Give yourself a serious pat on the back because not many people who have only used a sewing pattern once before could have gotten that bodice to look the way you did! Kudos upon kudos. I have sewn for years (ok, decades, if you want the truth, lol) and you seriously did a great job.

    That spiral thing is genius! It's easier to saw one long line than a bunch of short ones, it keeps the angles equal along the strip, and it prevents waisted fabric... I don't know when I'm going to use that knowledge, but it will happen.

    Girl I looooved this so much 😭😭😭 you have no idea! For serious! I just started sewing too and Simplicity had all their patterns on sale at Hobby Lobby for $1.99! How could I refuse?! So I grabbed a couple and oh dear. 😭 I can’t read the patterns to save my life. Your video really inspired me and your dress turned out beautiful! When I get some fabric maybe just maybe I’ll try my hand at the skirt pattern some day.... or even the dress pattern I got that has 17 pieces 😭😭😭
    Love this video. Love you. Keep it up your content is always wonderful!

    This looks so perfect!! Amazing job following the pattern. Pressing seams as you go honestly goes so far to making a crispy finish. Also as you sew more and more pattern you'll figure out that most garments go together in pretty much the same way and you'll be less dependant on the impossible to understand pattern directions
