    I think there is a bit of a difference between what Thomas did on stage 18 and what Bernal did on stage 19.
    Thomas counter attacked a teammate who had gone clear, whilst no other GC rider was chasing Bernal. So Thomas did nothing but drag all the GC contenders closer to Bernal.
    Whilst on stage 19, Thomas (3th overall) went clear with Kruijswijk and Buchmann (4th and 5th overall), so Bernal waited perfectly until Alaphillipe was dropped and then rode across to the other GC contenders without towing other GC riders closer to Thomas.....

    I know exactly why Movistar paced on Staged 18, it seemed confusingly obvious to me.
    They were trying to remove other domestiques from the leading group, meaning that no team (cough, Ineos, cough) could use 6 riders and takes minutes out of Quintana on the Galibier. By pacing behind a teammate, they helped to ensure Quintana's victory (in a confusing way).

    I wish Bernal had gone for the win in stage 20 to end any doubts. The somewhat arbitrary ruling of stage 19 wasn't really a great way to decide the tour.

  • @Ewane
    @Ewane 5 лет назад +3

    I still think Stage 19 should've just been completely cancelled. The only good news is that the GC would probably have been the same.
    If Stage 19 had been raced fully (if it had been safe to do so), I would imagine Alaphillippe losing minutes, Kruijswijk attacking, Yates winning the stage and a select group getting near, if not to, Bernal.

    I feel that too few people remark on the attack-killing headwind on the final climb. It was very accurately predicted by feltet.dk that shallow gradients and a headwind would lead to a very passive race on the final day.

    Thomas was unlucky in this tour. Had Stage 19 finished normally, Bernal would probably have been caught by Alaphillippe on the descent before the final climb and Thomas, who would have been drafting Alaphillippe with no intention to chase Bernal, would have been the freshest of the three.

    • @carl-friedrich9596
      @carl-friedrich9596 5 лет назад +6

      Daniel Goodlad there is no way. Alaphilippe gained almost no time at all during the first part of the descent, which was the technical part where he would have been able to make up some time but he didn’t. Thomas could have still benefitted though as jumbo visma had de plus for pace making and bora stated after the race that mühlberger had almost caught up with before it was abandoned. So they could have made the pace for their leaders through valley while they and Thomas could recover.

    • @Ewane
      @Ewane 5 лет назад

      Daniel Goodlad I don't think Bernal would've been caught, but I do think the fresher GC riders would've made in-roads on Bernal up the final climb.

    • @faridfares8338

      No way. On the top.of Iseran alaphilippe was 2 minutes behind bernal. When the race was stopped the gap was 2minutes 6 seconds. Bernal is good descender. And in thé Last climb bernal would add 2 or 3 minutes to alaphilippe. Bernal deserves the win. Since pinot gave up bernal was the best
