@@robmulally hello. Since you offered: what is your take on the fact that the S21 uses the main lens in a 2x crop instead of the 3x telephoto in portrait mode. Wouldn't it be better to have the option to choose the zoom lens?
@@bernardobaldissera I'm guessing the higher resolution coupled with the sensors allows for a more accurate simulated depth of field effect etc. But that's just a guess.

Thank you so much for the video, especially for the tips: the split of the exposure in pro mode is so important. I like also that you mentioned that the 10x zoom is also about taking picture that you won't be able to take with the other lenses. I would be using it for taking portrait pictures from my girls instead of using the actual artificial portrait mode. Not sure whether you knew this: taking videos with rear and front camera simultaneously was available back in Galaxy S5 before Samsung ditched it. I used it often on roller coasters with my kids, but also for filming them on stage and the audience at the same time.

Coming from a galaxy S10, I was first sceptical to upgrade to the S21 Ultra seeing that the S20 Ultra was not as good as Samsung claimed during their S20 presentation back then and I was afraid this one wouldn'tbe any better. But since I could order the phone for halve of the retail price I just went ahead and pre-ordered it and man I'm glad I did! It's way better than expected. Camera is better such an improvement in comparison to my old S10, white balance, over exposure, soft selfies, night shot...all of that improved and I'm very happy Samsung has come this far with their camera technology addressing all the flaws from previous models. Have I mentioned how fantastic the screen and battery life are? Only thing I don't like is they got rid of the micro sd card storage and headphone jack. BTW I love this review, well done Sydney sider. G'day mate!

Fantastic video man. I absolutely love what you said about the zoom being a compositional tool, not to just see things closer. Couldn’t agree more! I often use the 5x zoom on my note 20 ultra for that exact purpose, not just to zoom in to something to see it. But having the 3x AND the 10x on the s21 ultra is gonna be special, 5x zoom can sometimes be too much and then also too little. Can’t wait for my s21 ultra to arrive! Subbed to you man :)
Oh thanks yeah its great to meet like minded people via youtube ! and yeah optical zoom is a huge deal. I noticed they do really well in good lighting conditions and mixed as it gets darker so need to experiment more with whats going on there.
@@robmulally ye 100% man. You definitely seemed to talk a lot of sense in this video, I related to a lot of it! Ye I think in ideal lighting they're perfect but because their apertures are normally much smaller it can be tricky in other than bright conditions! Really can't wait to get shooting with the ultra. Can you do anything on the macro mode? I don't think it's its too close, up to maybe 5cm? Just wondering if you've found it quite good? Supposedly it switches to it when you get closer to a subject.
New Brisbane based subscriber here .. that was a great in depth video and I love the fact that its coming from someone who's passionate about mobile photography. I've had the samsung s series phones since they came out. My current phone is the s10+ and this year I was due for an upgrade .. I wasn't impressed with the reviews on the s20 ultra's camera so I thought this might be the year I switch to another brand. I heard a few early reports that the camera on the s21 ultra was going to be a game changer so I took the punt and pre ordered on the morning of the phones release. Your video has me really excited about getting this phone .. those night shots were amazing and thats something I've already stuffed around with in pro mode on my s10+ .. anyway, enough rambling .. great channel and great content.
Ahh thanks Peter, well i'm always here if you have questions, in some of my other videos like the astro one i suggest a specific head for the phone to mount to a tripod, if you get serious about night photos that will really help. only so much we humans can be steady even with all the crazy technology.
Thank you for mentioning the zoom trick. I use it a lot. You do have to stand a fair bit away from your subject, but it works well. I can't wait to see what I can do with the 10x zoom.
I have just bought an S21 Ultra, your video is the best I have found so far that talks about the camera, a huge thank you. One thing I did find though, from moving up from an S9+, it is small but it is when wearing sunglasses. On the S9, I could go from portrait to landscape with no change on the screen, with the 21, portrait is fine, but in landscape, the polarization of the sunglasses give it a deep green tinge, so now I have to take my sunglasses off, not such a hassle, just an observance.
Thank you! Funny you should say that I have noticed it to, I'm thinking that's what helps us see the screen in the daylight better some sort of polarisation. I need to make a follow up video so do let me know if you have any other questions.
@@robmulally Thank you for the offer, I am more into the video side, as my nickname suggests, I am a stage performer and with at least 4 old Samsung phones, a GoPro and two old digital handy cams, I use these to video tape rehearsals, especially the shows I am directing.

I'm so happy you talked about using the telephoto lenses for composition purposes rather than zooming in purposes. 72mm is better (imo) to use for portraits and capturing people in pictures vs something like 24-26mm, or 50-55mm on most "2x" telephoto lenses.
yeah agree! its not mentioned enough so glad i'm not the only crazy photographer out there hehe, i think the 3x and 10x is goning to be great i must admit I did miss the 5x but i think thats because my mind has been trained for that distance.
@@robmulally I actually really like the 4x on the S20U. The focal length (103mm) & sensor size really allowed for some crazy natural bokeh from a smartphone despite the relatively slow lens (crazy for a smartphone lol). I really wish Samsung was less aggressive with the lens switching due to thinking an object is too close for focus on telephoto. I downloaded gcam on the S20U to force the telephoto lens and it can get QUITE close for the focal length.
I've just bought a s21 ultra yesterday and I'm waiting to arrive, very excited and anxious, thanks for the vid with a lot of nice photos from this smartphone ( now I want it more yet kkkkkk )! I appreciate.
Subbed & Great videos! I love detailed specific videos like mathphotographer and now you! I am going to try out the S21 Ultra because I love zoom photography in my pocket, but I feel it is still behind The P40 Pro in both Hardware & Software. Smaller sensor, no RYYB sensor(s), no Multi Spectrum sensor. Software is also going to be hard to part with and the lack of; Pro Mode Raw zoom photo, Leica Monochrome modes, Light painting modes (real time), and Slow Motion 256x has insane quality with the RYYB sensor. Questions; Has Samsung added raw 108mp photos? Nightmode with all 4 cameras? ISO in picture mode still 6,400 (p40pro 409,600!)? THANK YOU!

Ah my advice is to just pic two things you can see and try and tell a story, a cup and the sink or a tree an a mountain. there doesn't always have to be a reason but it can really help when you are learning or not sure what to take photos of, just have a "pretend" client.

Wow, so incredibly impressed! Not just with the quality of video/editing, but the way you used the phone and ideas you had for different compositions... Just very different from what most RUclipsrs say, where they just dismiss a zoom lens because they'd rather have the ultrawide, or 'don't need to zoom'. Glad I found this video, subbed for more!
Oh hey! i'm Glad you found it useful!
My galaxy S21 Ultra arrives Friday, can wait to start taking pictures with it. Love your pictures brother.

Super helpful for this first-time S21 Ultra user. The cameras are the reason I upgraded to this phone, but didn't know the details. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome!
Excellent overview. Appreciate how you recorded the screen at the same time so we can see how it all works in the UI.
Very welcome I'll try to always do that. Been a few requests for more so let me know if you have any questions
This is how the phone manufacturers should make their phone release events. Awesome video!

yeah there will be! thanks for the feedback, i'm keeping notes from comments about what people are interested in so if you think of an idea let me know !
@@robmulally Thanks Rob. It will be great if you can share some tips on mobile photography in urban environment and natural environment (like coast, forest, etc). The tips on using zoom lens to make the object seems closer are very useful. All these tips will be so useful when going on holidays.

This phone is capable in the hands of an expert. I like the results really its more than capable.

Brilliant video. Liked and subscribed! You 'scratched the surface' quite deeply in that short space of time and explored some of the killer features already! It's great to get a pro photographer perspective who doesn't look down on the new smartphone tech and actually appreciates what it can do! Intelligent & incisive. You have the only review where the reviewer actually knows *how* and *when* to use the camera features to unleash the camera's true potential. That cloud shot at 1:29 was so sick
I really hope this review doesn't get lost in the sea of typical (and boring) tech reviews

G'day mate!

Great camera specific review. It's great that someone does a deep dive from a photographer's perspective.
Funny because i didn't feel like it was very deep.. just touched at the surface
@@robmulally Certainly more details than most popular tech reviewers. If you feel like you'd like to get into more detail (pun intended) then I'd definitely love to watch a video review like that.
For people like me who don't have a real camera, this is amazing! Digital zoom is almost always unusable! My next phone will probably be a S21 Ultra or Note 21 Ultra if it takes to another level!
Who says this isn't a real camera.... ?
this is the best video on s21 camera on youtube

Hi the wide lens is 24mm, and 3 times will be 72mm, not 26mm and 260mm.
Nicely done. Just discovered you and really appreciate what you said and how you described what was going on. I've been using my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra since it first came out and discover new features every day. Your accent falls nicely on these ears used to Philadelphia PA USA accents! Thanks!
Shit, you had it during NYE? That's incredible. I remember your photos on reddit.
yeah, I had work to do so couldn't take heaps of photos we had 9 cameras setup, so I just ran a 4K 60 video! its was so hard to decide what to run. maybe in hindsight i should have done 8k ! but i decided for slow mo 60fps.
@@robmulally Absolutely made the right choice. 8K historically isn't that much more detailed, Slowmo 4K was a great call :)
OMG…this is the best video ever
Coz most of the camera reviewers on RUclips just show the image shown after taking it with night mode….but you show that live screen recording which easier to understand how much light was there before taking that photo…and it is also very satisfying to see that…
So plss don’t stop showing us the screen recording….hope you see my comment and continue the same way….
And YOU earned a subscriber!❤️
And plss show more night mode image…it makes the video a lot better…

Was looking for this kind of review, very informative.
I don't get why you are only at 3.5k subs.
To be fair i don't make many videos, and before this video I was on 900 subs so thats very kind of you. I guess i need to make more videos like this haha. let me know if you got any questions , happyt to make a video just for you!
I LOVE the shot at 1:40!! So good!

Ah that's really nice of you to say.

Haha we hang out a lot
Ahh cool! yeah im sure a lot do but I don't hear any youtubers talking about it so wanted to really point it out.

I'm keen to know more about how u bring distant stuff close together with the Zoom
I think i will do a dedicated video on this, I did add this to one of my instagram Reels but i think in need to do for youtube: instagram.com/p/CH4tJIXhdsJ/
I think he explained it well enough, but it's not something I had considered before. I even stopped the video to show my wife that bit. Definitely going to try using that more in vacation photos.
Because when he zoom out he switches to ultra wide from which things look much further
How did you record New years fireworks with S21 ? It released on 14th Jan..

I've just bought a s21 ultra yesterday and I'm waiting to arrive, very excited and anxious, thanks for the vid with a lot of nice photos from this smartphone ( now I want it more yet kkkkkk )! I appreciate.
Oh cool! I'm excited for you
Subbed & Great videos!

U need to travel
Don't know if I said it before but as I watched this again tonight, there is so much for me to experiment with and learn. Love it, love my S21 Ultra and look forward to more of your teaching. /WRF
Thanks so much!
Great video Rob! Is the 100x zoom still just a gimmick or actually something which provides good shots?
It's better, but still not usable as photegraph, it's not something you want to share on Ins, but it's useful if you want to see or read something far away.
I agree I will be sticking to native 3x and 10x optical modes. I hate digital zoom
taking photos isn't only about social media......if you want to shoot some sudden event or incident,or maybe you need something to use as evidence ...it should come in handy
thats a good point
I personally stick to the native zoom levels and crop after if i "need" to.
Finally a not just point and shoot review. I never just point and shoot i always at least tweak the exposure...
Really nice video and good tips for telephoto lens. I am really curious to know the performance of 10x optical. It is f4.9 so can you please comment on its quality indoors/low light? I tried it in Best Buy and was not that impressed. I see lot of grains in shot. It would help me make my decision based on your thoughts.
Yes 10x zoom definitely for outdoor or tripod use only. Basically this is 240mm optucal zoom equivalent. To make something like that with fast aparture you need huge lens.
yeah low light needs more testing i found mixed results but want to wait for full review.
Yes tripod will help but its not essential I got some great results without it.
I've learned a lot from you, thanks mate, regards from the Netherlands!
