I believe it. My son had the check engine light come on with his Chevy Avalanche. My OBDII scanner indicated it was an air-intake sensor. Dealership (that my son worked for actually) addressed all kinds of issues to include breaking down the engine to replace a piston...WHAAAATT! It was close to a $8000 repair. Insane! Long story short, I consulted with my brother who is an auto mechanic remembered a service bulletin for this truck explaining the air-intake sensors go bad (hence my OBDII scanner was on the $$). We installed the $75 part, reset the check engine light. Bingo....that solved the problem. Check around people!

A friend of mine at work had an issue with her 4WD system on her Toyota 4Runner and the Toyota dealer quoted her over $5,000 to replace the transfer case. I recommend she take it to my independent mechanic and all it needed was servicing. He did the transfer case oil and both from and rear differentials an engine oil change and transmission service all for about $600. It’s been running smoothly since then (about 5 months ago). Not all dealers are bad but it sure seems like more are dishonest or just don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t have mechanics anymore, just parts jockeys.

As a former mazda mechanic, dealerships train their young mechanics to be parts pushers.
If you trained at a mom and pop shop like i was. Our goal was to solve the problem at the lowest possible cost to the customer.
I would have done what rich did, identify the problem and see if you can get just that one part and not a whole assembly.
It takes years to get the experience required to get those results.
I am now a plumber and do one day boiler installs. And people always ask why i charge the same as if i did them in 3 days.
You're paying for the professional experience and knowledge.

3:55 It's not that hard to be smarter than a dealer tech. I bought a 2004 VW Golf from a police impound for $800. The engine was locked up. I paid $2,600 to have another engine installed. The check engine light came on and the engine would not spin faster than 3,100 rpm. It had 5 codes. The VW dealer said I needed a new timing belt, water pump and tensioner. They wanted $2,048. I bought a wiring diagram and replaced a $17 temp sensor. All 5 codes are gone and the engine spin faster than 3,100 rpm.

What normal mechanics do, is search a database that says to replace a part takes 7 hours and that's what they charge you, even if that job only takes 2. It's a coordinated scam across the industry. The only way anyone will get Rich's kind of service is to find a friend/relative that is willing to charge true time/cost for a job.

Another informative video! I bet that the previous owner was told that the part cannot be ordered separately. I also bet that they needed new tires & an oil change. When getting the oil change, the service rep mentioned the problem that you fixed. Upon hearing the cost and saying thanks we will be back they decide to trade in the car. They did not set out to scam you guys. Probably they figured that the car would be wholesaled. When trading in you never mention problems with the car but you also you really make sure all of your stuff is out of the vehicle. Kudos to you and Rich for having an honest shop. Toyota is a dependable car but for them it is easier to stock the entire assembly than just 1 little part of the whole. BTW- years ago my friend took his 2010 Yaris in for the air bag replacement. The Toyota dealer said (I do not remember the details) something about an oil leak? Anyway, he was quoted $300 That in itself is a red flag because Toyotas are very reliable so why would such a vehicle need such an expensive repair? We went to a national chain tire store & they quoted &70 or so. It was a minor problem that was easily fixed. Regarding finding a mechanic-do not go by the motor club ratings. I had an AAA rated garage that I used for oil changes and other such maintenance. I needed a replacement thermostat on my ION. This was 7 years ago. He charged me $300 because he had to "reset" or "check" the codes! I was a longtime customer, and they pulled that stunt! Flash forward 2 years later. I am at a local nationwide or regional tire shop. I needed to replace the replacement thermostat! That one did not cost anywhere near $300! -not even close.

Toyota dealer quoted my friend a new ECU to fix his weird transmissions problem on his tundra. Turned out to be rodent damage of one of the wire harnesses which took all over half an hour to fix in the driveway. My uncles firebird was fixed for $5,000 back in 2001. It went in to the dealership for a simple oil change and they scared him into "repairs" the car never needed. Because of their scare tactics, he sold the firebird and never bought a GM product again. He's also never had a dealership touch his vehicles after that ever again. Dealers do a lot of emotional damage both in the purchase phase and the maintenance and repair phase.

It's really not as much about dealership dishonesty or lack of skill- But more so that of overwhelming perverse incentives. Manufacturer warranty reimbursement rates are typically very low and almost never compensate for diagnosis, so there's an enormous incentive for the tech to simply do the job in the way that's easiest and most economical from that perspective. Steve Lehto has a great video out that addresses this issue- He settled 2 lemon law cases from 2 different owners on the SAME car. The manufacturer had replaced the top end (head) multiple times but never resolved the issue. It turned out that there was a defect in the casting of the bottom end (block) but it wasn't discovered because the manufacturer wouldn't authorize the diagnostic time needed under warranty. There's tons of other examples of this and it's a real issue that effects nearly everything we buy today.

In PA we need to do annual inspections. If something fails you can have the dealership fix it for you and you're fine. I had a headlight fail inspection because it was slightly dimmer than the other one. They would fix it. It would cost 70 dollars plus the cost of the bulbs in addition to the 40 or so bucks it costs for the inspection.
I said nah, I can do this myself, problem is if I leave I got to get reinspected. Still was cheaper to buy new headlight bulbs and replace them myself and get reinspected elsewhere.
    Thanks PA. >:(

Something like this id probably have to research. I can think of a few past situations where the more expensive option is the right option. The dealer definitely is going to add markup but there may well be a method to the madness where that second module should also be replaced. Sometimes the manufacturer knows that b module failing generally means the a module isn't far behind due to some component used 15 years ago.

Maybe the seller thought the transmission was going out. I've worked on car a long time. All it needed was mass air flow sensors cleaned and 2 clogged air filters. Cost me $45 filters only I did the work done. Then I did not chect seat lumbar adjustment was out. Dealer charge part $3200 plus labor. I went on RUclips man took motor out took motor apart contacted a seat manufacuurer in canada got the new grears free done for nothing. NEVER have your vehicle repaired at a dealership UNLESS its under warranty or its a recall item. Dealers jack up prices on vehicles, parts, and service. How do you think they can afford all that land and those huge buildings for offices? It's ALL about scamming the consumer.

When did you take in a Rolls Royce for sale? Did I hear you correctly that in order to replace the starter you have to drop the subframe? Geez, I guess for the price of a Rolls one could afford to do that. So, Rolls is no different than some vehicles in which you have remove the bumper or some or part to replace headlight?

I like when customers get huge repair orders and trade their cars to me. I can usually fix the car for about 1/10th of what the estimate was.

I think it goes to show that dealerships rip people off all the time!! But to be fair, its because they wont spend the extra time to find that one part….they want to replace the whole thing.

I have found dealers to not know what they are doing. You'd think a name dealer would be the experts on the brand they sell but I've gone to basic service places that correctly diagnosed and fixed problems the dealer couldn't. After a time you just find a reputable, independent mechanic and skip the dealer.

True but sometimes an electrical issue needs a full reset to be detectable again. I have a car now that I drive rarely and the O2 sensor goes bad on the first drive all the time, but not again until after the car sits a few weeks.

Oh that’s what’s missing for many types of repairman, honesty. You should start a side business of fixing cars but being honest with a People… If it’s broken is broken that’s fine don’t try to pad the repair bill for instance, like you said $2000 versus 200? Do you know what I mean, maybe you can honestly fix it for 500 have a happy customer and a return customer
