Absolutely! No studio enhancements, no synthesizers, no AI, no rapping, no Autotune,, no sampling, and no boring introspection Just six musicians on top form. Goodness I was lucky to live through this. Support your local live music venues and musicians or this will never happen again. We will all be drowned in a sea of corporate crap and AI nonsense. Maybe buy an acoustic guitar, learn a few chords and see where it gets you.

And there you saw it, folks. One of the best American blues rock guitarists, ever. Yeah, I know Hendrix was unmatched, Allman was terrific, Bloomfield was great, et al. But Allen Collins was a stripped down, meat and potatoes, precisely delivered, pentatonic blues guitar player; and a lot of these riffs are like Paul Kossoff's, only sped up and supercharged with a little bit of Southern twang tossed in here and there. On the record, he did the dual leads all himself. That's how good he was. Amazing. Sad that he's gone. Sad that most of them on that stage are gone. What a tight, rockin', soulful and bluesy sounding band. With such a full sound. With Ronnie singing his heart out -- just like on the record. The UK music fans obviously had a treat that day. Peace out to all.

I was a teenager in the 70's. Teenager's today are so different. I feel sorry for them. Life was so much simpler. We weren't a plastic society, no cell phones, no computers, etc. The best part was that concert tickets were less than 10 dollars and others in the audience were respectful of each other. There was trust amongst us. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Freebird at Knebworth 1976 is as good as it gets. There has never been, nor ever will be, a better performance. In particular, nobody will ever come close to Allen Collins' performace on that day. It's disappointing that nobody has come close to emulating that performance in 45 years, but also somehow immensely satisfying to know that there is a benchmark for live musicianship and here it is, recorded for all eternity. How I envy the people that were there. They were part of something that can never be repeated.

I Love Leonard Skynard! I am 61 years old now and I still Love them! When I was very going, my brother played in a band and I think that this may have been the first Southern Rock song that he played in his band, he played in a Country Music band but he Loved playing songs that had a lot of lead guitar playing in it, he was one of the best lead guitar players that I have ever heard, he passed away at the young age of 43 years old after a battle with Luekemia! This song brings back so many Wonderful memories! I miss him so much!

Thanks for sharing that. Same age here. This takes me back to another time and the memories that I have are attached to songs like this one. I was at a pool party when I first heard it it, fell in love with it. I am sorry to hear about your brother. 43 three and a a musical artist that I never got to hear. But I am sure he was amazing. I played keys and trumpet in a number of gigging cover bands, we could have used your bro on guitar. God bless you.

I saw this too and was also impressed, but I think he's motioning that its time to end. 'One more bar' maybe? (OBLIGATORY PEDANTIC EDIT: It actually sounds like 4 or 8 bars to me, but you get the idea. One more 'go around'. I guess its one phrase? Or maybe two? I have no f'in idea...). Very shortly after he waves to get the attention of the drummer and gives a 'cut' gesture. Really awesome to see that little bit of direction.

On a bill featuring The Don Harrison Band (containing the Creedence rhythm section), Hot Tuna (featuring Kaukonen and Cassady from Jefferson Airplane), Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Skynyrd, 10cc (their last ever live performance) and the Stones. Skynyrd were magnificent and the Stones played like they had something to prove - I think it still goes down as their longest ever performance. One fabulous day though

There is a picture of that morning that features Charlie Watts talking to a apparently bemused Ronnie Van Zandt with Doug Clifford as a witness.
The legend says that is the very moment when the Stones sent the message 'don't step on the tongue' to LS.
No way to know if is the true moment or not, unless Clifford steps in, what we know is that Ronnie didn't give a damn about it.

During the guitar solo, you see Ronnie bringing Collins and Rossington out to the stage extension, or the "tongue", which was strictly designated for the Rolling Stones and this severely pissed off Mick Jagger. You can see Collins being hesitant about being out there and gives Ronnie a look like "should we be doing this?" but does anyway. That was Ronnie, playing by his own rules.

I was there that afternoon - it was very hot and there was no shade, everyone had come to see the Stones, and we were all laying about in the heat when this fairly unknown American band came on. I remember that within a few minutes people sat up and started to take notice. The band worked hard to get people on their feet, but by the time they played Freebird we were all standing and in the groove!
I was 21 and was camping overnight with friends - ah those sweet sweet memories!

I watch this performance several times a year and it never fails to completely wow me. Allen Collins is one of rock's legends and unfortunately not often talked about. This performance and song (he was the primary writer on this one) should assure his name among the greats and I really hope that one day his name will be mentioned much more often when people look back at rock's greatest decade. Better still, he was so humble - just really loved playing guitar, being a husband and being a father. RIP Allen - you brought great, great joy to so many. ❤
