Remember being in a pub talking to someone in England in the 90s and was stopped mid conversation by the guitar solo when someone put it on the jukebox "hang on ! I got to find out what the hell this is, this is incredible "
Skynyrd Pianist Billy Powell had been a Rodie for the band prior to 1972 when he overheard lead singer Ronny Van Zant trying to figure out an intro for Free Bird. Billy jumped on a nearby piano and said here's what I'd do and played the intro that became the ethereal beginning notes for Free Bird. He was hired on right then and became the band's keyboardist for the next five years until the untimely plane crash that took Ronnie Van Zant and four others.
This is quite possibly the best version of Freebird ever recorded, as it has Bob Burns on drums with Ed King playing some lead along with Allen Collins. So we have two Gibson SGs and one Gibson Firebird. Brilliant sound. Bob knows how to play this song on the drums without it sounding too rushed.
So glad I got to see this lineup multiple times in the good ole days in Little Rock several times and the 3 day festival in Sedalia in '74 the 10 year anniversary tour and took my oldest to see what was left of them in the 2000s.....got to meet Ronnie and Gary on a plane goin back to my ship in Philadelphia in '76.....

Southern power rock is energized by two masterful dueling guitar players, a wall of sound of percussion, and a concert pianist all dedicated to Dwane Allman.

One of my favourite songs of all time. I just cannot believe the tragedy around this band. From plane crash and onwards. But, their music lives on.

the lads playing Freebird at Knebworth was the best was the best live music I have ever heard - this is a great recording
You saw them LIVE @ Kneb ? - I saw them just a week earlier @ the " World Series of Rock " near Chicago ! (Hawthorne race track)

This should have 10 million views. It doesn't need restored, just seen.
Lynyrd Skynyrd has played over 1800 concerts. Ya ever think they might be tired of this song? I would be. It really messes one's hair up.
Saw them play this live and realised that I'd just ticked something off my bucket list that I didn't know was on there.
That’s not the real skynyrd you saw…..
Ronnie was such a star yet always wanted to push the other members of the band out front during the solos..
That's what a leader does... he appreciated that talent.
Thank you all RIP for the unbelievable times you’ve given me over the last 50 years ! ❤
If you were around at this time ...............music that changed your life
Lots of good hair, and what a great song
The only guys who ever truly nailed a cover of Cream’s Crossroads too. Magic all of them.
"Crossroads" is a Robert Johnson song . . also recorded by Cream & Others 🎵🎶🎼✌🎸
This is ( WITHOUT QUESTION ) the best song / tune , in the World EVER 👍
" simple as that "

One of the best pianist in the world was Billy
I heard somewhere that as soon as the band heard his piano skills, Ronnie fired him as a roadie and hired him as a pianist lmao
Can you imagine how great they could have been if not for the plane crash in 1977. They were already great in my mind with Free Bird.

@@Codestersmusicandcars no no. Bob left before the recording of Nuthin Fancy. It was Ed King who left the Torture Tour.
