im in australia , and im in tears as i hear you brother , we are alone loved lynard skynard , we had friends from the USA growing up that got us into this music free bird , love it
At 77 I’m am only just becoming fully aware of how great this band was. They had an ethereal quality about them and there songs resonated with me like few other bands have. RIP Lynyrd Skynyrd you struck a unique chord.
As a 54 yo male currently, I never knew who they were growing up and I’m from Alabama believe it or not. But in my mid twenties I started paying attention to the original band and the more of their songs I heard made me become a super fan and a researcher of the band and it’s history. In my humble opinion they were the best rock band to come out of the ‘70’s and they have more consistently good songs than some of the other so called great bands who used a lot of “album filler” songs just so they could release another album. These boys were the epitome of hard work, sacrifice, a blessed talent and perfect timing of being in the right place at the right time. Ronnie never wrote a single word of his songs on paper, they were all in his head. When asked how he could that, he replied “if it ain’t worth remembering, it ain’t no good”. R.I.P. boys.
When a company moved me to Alabama in the early 90's I stopped at a gas station on my way to my apartment. I pulled up an parked and opened the door of my new car. There was this dude getting gas that had every speaker purchased flat out blaring but at a crystal clear of the tunage. I had never heard Simple Man before but by God on that day I did. The dude never even glanced at me due to my out of state tags- cool. The dude from there in Alabama opened a can of beer, got in his truck and bolted. I later clearly understood he was a 'Simple Man' an thought nothing about it. After living in Alabama 10 years before moving to South Carolina I knew that I had become a 'Simple Man' and to this day very proud of it.
This is my moms and my song, we danced to it in my wedding. She isnt doing good and the only thing keeping me together is knowing she raised me right and this song will always be ours. Love you Beautiful Woman!
@@vc23it doesn't seem possible, but they were better live when l saw them in '75 literally blowing me away in awe what l had experienced. The power, creativeness, the extremely hardest working band ever which is why they are even more significant now then back then because they are timeless and their lives cut short. Ronnie sang in his barefeet to feel the vibe of the band. He wrote songs about his life in his head, never written down😂! For instance, "Give Me 3 Steps" was a true account of the missteps of Ronnie, then truly running out of a bar with a huge 6'5" big dude with a gun in his hand. Guitarists Gary and Alan were sitting in his car waiting for Ronnie to come out but not that way. They both said they couldn't stop laughing at the situation, went immediately home together and wrote that song that night, lol!! "Simple Man" was written nearly same way. The boys got talking about the wisdom their Grandma's told them and "Simple Man" became a reality. They had a shack with no air-conditioning in Jacksonville swamps. They practically lived there 24/7, that's where the magic happened. Ronnie was Lynyrd Skynyrd, he was the leader, lyricist he became because he was a poet for years writing and that paid off dividends of a major magnitude!! He also directed the band on stage via his orders. If you listen to their live versions, ever notice you can hear Ronnie loud and clear? His orders, he didn't want to be drowned out like most bands. That great discipline and control. Ronnie beat it into the band he wanted their live sound just like the recording, so they practiced over and over again. By the time their first album came out, they played all those songs with very few takes because of insane practice over and over again. 5 albums in less than 4 years, then tragedy struck a extremely sad ending when they finally had the sound, right combination, l know, what was wrong with the one they had, nothing, Steve Gaines gave them a kick in the ass they needed!! They were the best live band in the world middle of '76 till their ending Fall of '77. All true and tons more!! The iconic story of Lynyrd Skynyrd who when they picked up somebody new, the magic got bigger starting with Billy Powell, the Ed King which made 3 guitarists, Artimus Pyle, a better drummer, then 3 back up female singers, one being Steve Gaines sister, then gone!!
Never before or ever again shall we see a bunch of guys come together and write and perform music from the heart and soul that touches everyone for generations....live on..
I remember first time I heard this song. Was 21 sitting in a dive bar on Friday after work with 5 of my buddies drinking some beer and planning the nights events. A guy I'm guessing in his 50s put this on the juke box and bought us all a round his words "Boys live your life like this song and you'll never go wrong." Nearly 30 years later I've never forgotton that
Love that you remember that exact moment in your life and remember it every time you hear this song. I love when songs bring you right back to when you were listening to them.
Since I was a teenager, I have always come to this song whenever I've needed help. It has never let me down. Ronnie was something fierce, drawing power from the Earth itself. The finest song ever written.
If there ever was a rock n roll phoenix that rose from the ashes, Lynyrd Skynyrd was it. My favorite band of all time. My Dad graduated HS in 1971 and this was his generations music so naturally this is what I grew up on, the best classic rock around.
No matter what, this music Ronnie VanZant wrote will live on forever ! Because music is a gift to all of us. It's not just what you do why your here,it's what you leave behind when you go! Thank you Ronnie!

It has to be amazing to look back on your life and know you affected the lives of a generation and then like Gary Rossington realize your the only one left. Thank God, that we Simple Public were allowed to see and Hear this Genius band. The Music is still Fresh Today as the day Ronnie Van Zant started the Band. My RESPECTS... RH DSD
They were the best southern rock band ever! I never got to see the original band, but am going to get to see them at the rodeo in San Antonio, in a couple of weeks.
Greatest voice to ever grace a speaker and for you millennials that disagree well.....gfys! And get a clue of what real music with a meaning is ! God bless Ronnie,Steve,Cassie,Billy and Allen could only imagine what tunes you would have made in todays time
From your profile, you're a millennial. Do you even know what that term means?. and what does "gfys" even mean? Are you the generation after the generation you make fun of?
When I was in high school in the 80's I didn't like lynyrd skynyrd. But as I got older. Lynyrd skynyrd is one of my favorite band. I appreciate their music.
Frickin’ amazing drum performance on this song. Restrained, but constantly propels the song forward. Like a heartbeat. I’m thinking particularly of the way he plays the hi-hat on those quarter notes during the verses.
These guys and their kicking ass music got me through the tough times in my life, Free Bird my motto Simple Man a great way to live, Thank you from my heart💜
Mama told me when I was young Come sit beside me my only son And listen closely to what I say And if you do this it'll help you Some sunny day oh yeah Oh take your time don't live too fast Troubles will come and they will pass Go find a woman yeah and you'll find love And don't forget son there is someone up above And be a simple kind of man Oh be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man Oh won't you do this for me son if you can Forget your lust for the rich man's gold All that you need is in your soul And you can do this oh babe if you try All that I want for you my son is to be satisfied And be a simple kind of man Oh be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man Oh won't you do this for me son if you can Oh yes I will Oh don't you worry you'll find yourself Follow your heart and nothing else And you can do this oh babe if you try All that I want for you my son is to be satisfied And be a simple kind of man Oh be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man Oh won't you do this for me son if you can And baby be a simple real simple man Oh be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man
I love this song.. Music from the 70s is so relevant for this generation and the future generations to come. Growing up in Ohio in the 70s was a blessing because I grew up in a very diverse environment. So, I was exposed to rock and roll. I remember hearing how the music was taboo. But, people don't hear the words you all were expressing. Simple Man, says a lot about how you were raised. Freebird is about not changing or can't change for whatever reason.. How he said oh lord. Even as a kid I cried. I love your music because it's universal and it's a story of life. Thank you for writing it. I have a half Arabian son from Saudi. I'm a black american. My son lives with his father due to cultural laws. I sent him music and your band is one that I exposed him to. Because I want my son to be a simple man. ❤
In 93 after a few beers and hearing this I went strait and bought a new guitar ! all these years later I truly suck at guitar but I can play this song with the best of them , God I love this song
I remember standing in the crowd at winterland when Ronnie came walking out barefoot holding a bottle of Jack Daniels that was such an amazing show rest in peace Ronnie
Yes, and now they are back together, the four original founding members of LYNYRD SKYNYRD. Gary Rossington left this world on March 5, 2023. I am beyond heartbroken. 💔😥😔 R.I.P. Mr. Gary Rossington ♥️
Really done a lot of good to tell Skynyrd members not to walk out on there tounge ... Requested by Mick Jagger and this is when they were opening for the Stones and should have been the other way around if you ask me ..
I was there. I can't believe that I got to see all of the bands back then. I loved every minute of it all, but I don't think I realised how special the times were. I suppose that I thought that it would all go on forever. How wrong I was.
My brother & I loved this music. I have such great memories of going to Lake fishing with him & listening to this. I played this at his funeral..Until we meet again my brother.
Some people are to beautiful and talented to be here with us mere mortals. The music industry has lost too many of them. Thanks for visiting and leaving your gift behind.
But the best part about it was that they were themselves "mere mortals" but just hard-working mortals, just like people who get up and go to work every day somewhere, getting great at what they do. This was the hardest working band of all time, past, present, or future, slogging it out seven days a week in an unconditioned cabin in the woods, just to create masterpieces for the rest of us who could have done the same thing had we their desire and drive.
This song is so near and dear to my. Heart. For. I met. A man 5 yrs. Ago. I named him my precious sweet Simple man. This is his song. This is my Jamie.
I am crying for all those people that have written such deep and profound comments.. I'm sure Ronnie is smiling and pleased that he touched us all God bless the lost and lonely Because I am one
Thank you for sharing, what a great band and so young. They would have topped AC/DC and Zeplin. Both great of course. Blackberry Smoke is our current Skynyrd, not comparing but I really I think Blackberry is an awesome band.
Still listening in May 2024....I was a fan before the plane crash.
A true tragedy, man do I miss these people.

Writing this on August 13th 2023, to the day 50 years after its first release, this tune has lost none of its beauty and relevance
Thank God, that we Simple Public were allowed to see and Hear this Genius band. The Music is still Fresh Today as the day Ronnie Van Zant started the Band. My RESPECTS... RH DSD
Well said!
Was soll ich Deutscher sagen, einfach nur Geil wie man zu seinem Land stehen kann.
Best rolling credits ending ever. Got it on VHS as soon as it was out.
Had the DVD for good while & the soundtrack to the film.
I swear to God, there is nothing is this world that makes me cry as hard as this video, the ending to "Free Bird".

1:41 Cassie and Steve Gasines. Rest In Peace. I never met you, but you're missed.
This Band is truly amazing and missed! I grew up listening to this legend and their music! RIP RVZ !
How can we forget? All heart. Guts, power, in your face every single time. Blown away. Wished I saw them live. Got the music that's what counts.
When I was in high school in the 80's I didn't like lynyrd skynyrd. But as I got older. Lynyrd skynyrd is one of my favorite band. I appreciate their music.
It happens to all of us. I hated Duran Duran in the 80's. Love them now.
Same here, age like fine wine.
Gary Rossington ✝️🕊️
Their true anthem!
I lost my only son only child this song has helped me so much
God bless you … you and I share the same fate
My mom's anniversary and I was her only son wish I would have listened to the words when I was younger
God bless you all
First song I want played at my funeral. This version
i only have one brother and when each of us were born my mom printed lyrics on our walls and this is his song
Song still gets to me after all this time amazing masterpiece
Frickin’ amazing drum performance on this song. Restrained, but constantly propels the song forward. Like a heartbeat. I’m thinking particularly of the way he plays the hi-hat on those quarter notes during the verses.
Nice.
I danced to this song with my son at his wedding!! Love this song & we need more music like this today!❤️
Timeless!!I love this band!!New fan..42yrs on this earth & just found my way to them!!

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it'll help you
Some sunny day oh yeah
Oh take your time don't live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
Go find a woman yeah and you'll find love
And don't forget son there is someone up above
And be a simple kind of man
Oh be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh won't you do this for me son if you can
Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this oh babe if you try
All that I want for you my son is to be satisfied
And be a simple kind of man
Oh be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh won't you do this for me son if you can
Oh yes I will
Oh don't you worry you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this oh babe if you try
All that I want for you my son is to be satisfied
And be a simple kind of man
Oh be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh won't you do this for me son if you can
And baby be a simple real simple man
Oh be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Thanks for taking the time to write these great meaningful lyrics .
Thanks from Italy
Best
I tell my son this all the time!
My favorite song ! For me one of the best band of ever: real talent, excellent performances, and true Southern rock music ! Timeless!! From Italy
My sentiments exactly
R.I.P. Mr. Gary Rossington ♥️
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS ONE, THEY WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!!!!!!!
Goosebumps every time I hear this song
I’m a drummer and this is one of my favorite songs to play ever. Also my favorite song of all time to listen too. The louder the better!!
One of the best songs ever written
Really done a lot of good to tell Skynyrd members not to walk out on there tounge ... Requested by Mick Jagger and this is when they were opening for the Stones and should have been the other way around if you ask me ..
I was there. I can't believe that I got to see all of the bands back then. I loved every minute of it all, but I don't think I realised how special the times were. I suppose that I thought that it would all go on forever. How wrong I was.
Ronnie thanks you your dad was a wonderful man your mom a always care for us best mamery of my. Life family love ❤️
Saw them at Knebworth great. Stones eat your heart out blown off stage.
My brother & I loved this music. I have such great memories of going to Lake fishing with him & listening to this. I played this at his funeral..Until we meet again my brother.
When that plane went down in October 1977 they were the greatest Rock Band in the world
Some people are to beautiful and talented to be here with us mere mortals.
This IS American values spelled out in one amazing song. I remember seeing Skynyrd many times in the 70s and this was THE song we came to hear.
One of the greatest songs ever!!!
I wrote down the lyrics to this song. When I do the dishes, sometimes I like to sing it. She's one smart mama.
This song is so near and dear to my. Heart. For. I met. A man
5 yrs. Ago. I named him my precious sweet Simple man. This is his song. This is my Jamie.
The hair on my arms goes up and I get goose bumps then tears.
Taught myself how to play guitar over Covid and just learned Tuesdays gone the greatest piece of music I think ever written
Also a Navy veteran served on the USS Vesole DD 878 1972 till 1975 rock on Lynard skynyrd for ever God bless America
I am crying for all those people that have written such deep and profound comments..
I'm sure Ronnie is smiling and pleased that he touched us all
God bless the lost and lonely
Because I am one
Thank you for sharing, what a great band and so young. They would have topped AC/DC and Zeplin. Both great of course. Blackberry Smoke is our current Skynyrd, not comparing but I really I think Blackberry is an awesome band.
All bands still rocking on there #1 all time 🇺🇸south
Uma das canções mais bonitas que já ouvi... Viva, Lynyrd Skynyrd...
