Also, the bootstrap-tastic bootlicky argument that people always have the escape hatch from poverty of joining the military... I tried to join the military to escape unemployment. They declined to let me apply because of a medical condition. So....
Never join, they won’t lift you out of poverty. I know a dude that went to college and they only paid PART, of his college fees. He had to pay the other half, both him and my sister are in debt. Also he is my Brother-in-law and both work crappy jobs that pay less then what the minimum should be. I feel really sad for them. Mostly cause my sister needs a life of her own, and I want her out of my hair. Cause they’re living in my parents house and, I can’t leave for medical reasons right now. Mostly I have mental disabilities, which have made it hard to live on my own...

How hard is it to understand that the consequences of decades or centuries of racial oppression don't end with the outlawing of that oppression? How hard is it to understand that black South Africans were not the ones who made it about race, and that trying to remedy the inequality created by that long time racial oppression is not oppression?

This guy you argued with was casting shade at affirmative action like a chud, and I think he is wrong to call it "preferential treatment." Its equal treatment. An economic stimulus for black people in South Africa would be equal treatment. And if he thinks it doesn't come out okay "in general," (he's also wrong about saying always and never, it's just very risky to do so,) he should maybe look at how very well economic stimulus worked for Jewish people in Germany, (Germany, after the Nazis were kicked out, gave Jewish people cars,) and like... literally all of Japan. He should also consider: if someone robs someone's house and gives you all the loot just randomly, shouldn't you give that loot back to the person who was robbed? That's reparations.
(And an additional note about reparations: shit is still happening to black people in the US and in South Africa, which requires reparations to make up for it. I doubt he understands what's going in with black people in the US, because he doesn't know what the fuck is happening in regards to de facto segregation and the federal policies that discriminated against black people post segregation.)

Colleges did allow black people... *aaaand segregated them.* The college education black people could expect was not as high quality either. And college education isn't the only thing that determines your financial success or social power in your future... elementary and high school education are also important! The fact that so many people think that being forced to be a soldier is an acceptable thing when you have no other way out of your bad life is depressing Noone should be a trained killer at all just to have a half-decent life
Even if every black person in poverty tried to join the military the military could not handle that many people. Active duty at any given time is on the order of about a million people(I am not counting the chairforce), even assuming only 30% of black people could get in(according to some national guard study this was roughly the % of people in the correct age group actually eligable to join) thats 3-4 million people. Also many black people do join the military as they are significantly over represented in every branch but the marines when compared to the civilian workforce, black women in particular are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over represented in the army.

I think the guy did not understand that just because everyone was given the same rights, does not mean everything suddenly became equal. I know that it is frustrating, but you are not going to correct them by getting angry at these guys, he is working off his own anecdotal experiences with individuals that say it is not an issue. The only way to convince people like this is to walk them through the systemic problems where the policies of the past are affecting groups today. Such as that black people may be less likely hired despite the same qualifications, and poverty affecting the next generation. It is not about punishing one group to reward another the first's ancestors hurt the other.
Dude clearly had no idea what he was talking about when you moved into the meat of the conversation, but one thing I caught at the beginning that bothered me was a cheap bit of wordplay by Jake. Suffrage and civil rights didn't specifically target those minority groups to grant them advantages that would allow them to climb out of a pit, but rather did the exact opposite by removing the harmful disadvantages that were specifically targeting them to put them in a pit. For example, if "every adult should be able to vote" is our default position then "women be able to vote" is redundant and "women should not be able to vote" is specifically targeting women as a group. So using that as an example obviously didn't really apply to the (still stupid) statements he was making and just came across as a cheap way to gain "debate points" with the viewers. Everything after that was just this dude being a complete moron, of course. I don't think they understand that the conditions you are born into matter, regardless of who you are, and I wish that had been explored more directly. I didn't get where I am in life purely by being white but by being born into a comfortable suburban middle class life with all of the financial resources that entails, like a dad that could foot the bill for college and pitch in when finances were tight so that we've never missed rent payments and such. If I was born in a trailer park things probably would have gone differently. Now given the systemic disadvantages against black americans, how many do you think started in a similar position? And if you can't get very far, then your kids can't get very far and their kids can't go very far and so on. Obviously there are many financially successful black people by now but it's crazy how someone can't grasp this concept that not everyone comes into this world with a nest egg that's been growing for several generations.
The "chud" term is probably a reference to the 80's film titled C.H.U.D. therefore degrading anyone by association when using it as a label for them. I'm here to help.
