  • Hey friends! Over the years, I've received TONS of questions and many of them tend to be very similar.
So, I thought it would be fun to put together a video answering some of the most common...and also a few fun ones people have asked along the way as well.
This is definitely unlike my usual content, so bear with me as I try something new. I'll be back next video with a new project build!
    Hope you enjoy!

Speaking as a long(er)-time follower, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I think it's really easy for those of us on this side of the camera to forget that there is a living, breathing, human being with an actual life outside the channel, and it's also easy to disregard the amount of dedication and effort that goes into producing the quantity and QUALITY of content that you send out. Thank you for sharing some of the backstory of your journey, and thanks for being a "real," relatable person. Looking forward to the next 100K subscribers! (Boof to Lucy and meow to Bubs.) P.S. Actually my favorite answer was your last one. "Elegantly simple" (and therefore less expensive) is my shop mantra. Which is why I love your channel! Also haters gonna hate. It's on them, not you. Shake it off just like your "pretty girl" sawdust dance 🤣🤣

I love your channel. I like that you keep things simple and straight forward. I moved from my home of 30 years where we raised our children and have many ideas for my new place. The first of which is a new dining room table. My father was a woodworking hobbyist, but me, being a girl, never thought it would be beneficial to teach me anything about it. You make me believe it’s possible to learn. Even at 60 yrs old.

Thanks for producing this channel for us. I really appreciate woodworking videos where the projects are achievable and affordable with plans available. I think it is much greater challenge to build the beautiful and practical projects you build with Home Depot lumber than it would be to build with many hundreds of dollars worth of furniture grade hardwoods.

I really liked your video. I started because we just moved into a new house. It was a wreck. It’s like we flipped it but to make it livable. I needed a utility table and gathered all the scrap material I could find and built one. I loved building. It lasted for 10 years before the old wood just gave out. I put it on the curb and someone picked it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer all those questions.

What you said about material cost variation is so true. I have two HDs roughly equidistant from my house. I recently needed a plug to repair an extension cord. The same plug had different prices at these two stores that are a just few miles apart. Your mileage may vary! Great video!

    • @WoodshopDiaries
      @WoodshopDiaries  Год назад

I can’t count how many times I’d tell people this project cost $30 in lumber and people would complain it doesn’t cost that where they live and then the prices change over time so the next day it might be $40 instead of $30 😅 so it’s just best to supply a materials list and let people figure their own prices so they don’t get mad at me about it 🤣
It’s definitely crazy how much variation there is on all kinds of products in different locations even at the same stores. I don’t get it 🤷‍♀️ haha but anyway, thanks so much for watching! I hope you enjoyed it!

This was wonderful! Thank you so much for letting us get to know a little more. The last question is my favorite because of the very reasons you mentioned. I sort of blame the woodworking machine industry for making it seem like the only way you can build furniture is to own a shop full of their tools. Creators, such as yourself, totally smash that philosophy. I've commented before on how much I appreciate your uncomplicated, straight forward, building methods. Thanks again for inspiring us. May the Lord bless you and your husband.

    • @WoodshopDiaries

Thank you so much! I’m glad you appreciate the simplicity. I think there are a lot of factors working to overcomplicate things but yes, the machine industry definitely contributes…and I get it. Business is business. They want to sell equipment. But it’s not necessary for every shop.
Anyway, I appreciate you watching and God bless you and your family as well.

I remember watching a similar video from Tamar of 3 x 3 customs, and I was kinda shocked to hear her say some viewers thought her HUSBAND was building everything and she was posing! Do you ever get that?

    • @WoodshopDiaries

You know what? I honestly can’t remember where the hat came from. I know someone gave it to me YEARS ago (like at least 15-20 years), but don’t remember who or why 🤣
Yes 100% I get all kinds of “sexiest” comments. It’s annoying but I’ve worked in male dominated environments for my entire adult life and while the vast majority of them are kind and helpful, there’s a loud minority who are rude. It is what it is.
I appreciate you watching! I know there are generally some pretty stark differences between building for content vs building for commissions. But I’m glad you enjoy the designs and ideas! Happy building!

It was not till I started watching your channel that building what I would call indoor stuff seem like it was something I could do. AND the fact (one of the questions) is that you do make it simple and easy to follow on a scale easily understood by beginners and DIY'ers just getting started. Since then I also watch DIY Huntress and Home with Stefani. You also make very personable and relatable videos. About yt, Shara, it's an amazing place to learn new things. I spend too much time watching videos to tell the truth, you're going to find my comments everywhere. 😬
But I like to make things. So, woodworking, DIY in general, electronics, rc in general (rc cars, airplanes, drones/quadcopters)... And I learn a bunch. 😬
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

What I really appreciate is that your projects look fantastic, but don't look impossibly difficult; in fact, I just built my first cabinet with the methods learned from watching you. So rewarding! Not perfect, but quite acceptable for a first project😊. Thank you Shara, for giving me the courage and knowledge to pursue this new hobby! May I suggest sewing as a new hobby for you. Same creative process - visualize the outcome and work backwards! Blessings!

Considering your background, it seems like building and programing your own custom CNC setup is something you could manage, and document the process for content - of course. If you built something that wasn't the standard type it would get a lot of attention. Maybe to a collaboration with Jeremy Fielding (he built a 6-axis arm from scratch)

I so appreciate that you made this video. Last year I was inspired by you to try to build out the closets in our new house. The master closet had to be customized because two walls have doors and the other two walls have windows, yikes! Well, it's finished and I can say that I am proud of the result. I put in two chests with five drawers each plus all the hanging and shelving. So happy I stumbled across your channel because you gave me the courage to try. Now I'm building my office desk and book shelves inspired by your library desk set up. You're never to old to learn new skills. I just turned 63 earlier this year. My favorite question was "How do you plan or design your projects?" Your answer jives with how I do it too.

Great video. Thanks for your honest answers and comments and for the side info about your background, other life activities, your pets, etc. As someone else said, this helps us viewers feel like we know you a bit better. You definitely described my woodworking situation in that I love to make things but they are always one-off items for my own use and all done in my 2-car garage - which actually houses 2 cars. 🙂I have to move a car out to the driveway and then put up some foldable work tables and roll out my job-site-size table saw (I can manage to keep my miter saw set up in a permanent location) in order to do most projects. And that's the extent of my "large" tools. I don't have a jointer (do this on my table saw when needed) or planer (I don't tend to buy wood that needs planing) or stand-alone drill press or ban saw. I have made at least 2 items based on what I have seen you build. Thanks for the inspiration.

That's awesome! Yes, having a hobby you enjoy that doesn't tie into your career or business is definitely more fun--once you start feeling pressure to do it a certain way to either please other people or make money from it, it loses it's luster, I think. I hope your son and yourself both continue to enjoy your hobbies outside of your day jobs! Thanks so much for watching--I really appreciate it!

Really enjoyed you sitting down and answering questions from viewers. I always find it interesting to hear about people's lives. You obviously have the ability to do whatever you set your mind to. Your background is definitely impressive. I feel lucky to watch your video's and always enjoy them! I was glad you mentioned Lucy as I've been concerned since I haven't seen her in your video's for quite a while. I figured she might be staying at the house during winter to keep warm though. Bubby usually makes an appearance so that's fun. If you really want to learn violin you should check if there are any places in your area to get lessons but I hope you continue to make woodworking video's! I never realized how time consuming it is to make content so thanks for all the effort you put into it!!! Speaking for myself, it is greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for watching and following along! I appreciate you!
Lucy had an “incident” this past fall…she was allowed to free roam while I’m in the shop and usually she would just lay on her bed and watch out the door. But one day I was sanding and it was obviously loud and I didn’t notice she had gotten up and chased what I assume was a rabbit or squirrel in the yard. When I realized it, I couldn’t find her and I panicked. We live on 36 acres with a lot of barb wire fencing and she had found a hole in one of the fences and gotten into the adjacent field and she couldn’t figure out how to get back. She doesn’t bark…(which is nice, but in this case would have been helpful haha) so we had a hard time finding her. So now she stays on a tie out when I’m working so shes stuck toward the front of the shop and doesn’t make it into the videos as often anymore because she’s usually hanging out behind the camera. She’s still around. We still take frequent breaks for treats and belly rubs!
