    man, even though i've always been sort of a stickler for tube amps (just now coming to my senses... there are great amps on both sides, folks!), i always thought these sounded awesome. Even when I was in high school and I was convinced that TUBE was IT, my buddy had one of these and it definitely caught my ear. Over a decade later, I've played and owned a ton of amps, and my bandmate now uses one of these... just as great sounding as ever! really pristine sounding cleans.

    I've had mine for like 15 years. Yours is in incredible condition. Although mine has seen many years gigging and has the battle scars and wear and tear you would expect. Problems to expect. My main volume knob is was the first to "break". I have to wedge a pick under the knob to get it work properly. And my power button feel the hell off, basically the kiss of death, but I managed to put it back in, tape it down, and now I use a power strip to turn the amp on and off.

    I remember playing a show years and years ago... I want to say around 2002 or 2003... The band who played after us had a guitar player using an MG half stack and not going to lie, I totally judged them hard for it. I was thinking... "These guys probably suck." I was shocked at not only the dudes chops, but how good he got this thing to sound. And it was LOUD. I was very, very surprised. Just goes to show that there is so much hype around gear... Make the best of what you have and you can make anything sound good.

  • @Driust

    I had one of these, used it for practice and for gigs. Bought for 500 and eventually sold it for 400. It sounded good and got the job done but still does not compare to the real deal tube amps. My main problem is after playing through it for a long time (like an hour at band practice) it would heat up and then volume would drop by 50%. I had a line 6 solid state prior that would do the same. I concluded myself that it was just a common solid state problem. Switched to tube amps and never looked back. You play well in this vid. Good vid.

    I know this is a bit of an old video, but I was curious: Is there any difference between the different MG's (HG, HD, HC, et cetera) other than effects and looks? The current model, the HG, has the gold faceplate which I like more, but is there any tone difference? I don't use any effects (other than a Boss CE-5) so I'm not too worried about that, and since you have such a great tone here, I'm hoping they didn't change too much. Thanks for the really detailed review!

    • @at0mbalm

    • @PhillHaggath
      @PhillHaggath 5 лет назад +2

      They're pretty much the same line of amps, but updated models. I'm sure there was one before the MG HDFX/DFX range, but as far back as I can remember there was the MG HDFX (Head) and MG DFX (Combo) ranges, like the one shown in this video, and they were the best in my opinion. Great channel options, and though the footswitch/channel set up was annoying, they sounded pretty decent for the price you pay for them.
      Then they released, I guess, a second version of the MG, the FX, which had the ugly splat logo. They added removed the delay setting from the FX dial and gave it its own separate dial with tap tempo funtion, and added a phased to the modulation in place of the delay. But these amps I thought sounded terrible, and never really improved from this point onwards. The HCFX was the version with the silver face place, and pretty much the same, but I'm sure they added a vibe to the modulation effects.
      Admittedly I wasn't even aware of the HG range of these amps because I'd lost so much interest in them after the HD range went out of production. I think the HD range gets a lot of bad press as well due to how bad the FX and HC models sounded. I know you're not going to get the tone of a tube amp with any of these amps, but the HD range sounded really good in my opinion. I used to own the 100 Watt half stack, and sold it when I got my first tube amp. I've since sold the tube amp because of reliability issues, and got myself an old HD combo off ebay. I've been using it for about a year now and have never had any problems with it. I hope this comment helps you to understand the differences between the models!

    Do you know if this amp could compete with any of the Randall RG heads? I'm thinking about getting one to take the place of my Randall solid state so i'm not using a Randall all the time because i fricking HATE tube amps. I heavily dislike having to replace tubes and i want to put reliability as high on the list of requirements as tone and functionality. I need something that would be great for recording and would work for high gain seven string chugging.

    • @aaronarandac4
      @aaronarandac4  6 лет назад +1

      You know it's interesting that you mention 7 string chugging because I've used a schecter demon 7 on my main tube amp the Bugera trirec, and it sounded pretty muddy. I then switched over to this marshall mg head and the heavy amount of mids and highs that come natural with the marshall really made that 7th string cut through. It still sounded like heavy chuggs but with much more clarity than the bugera. So i would recommend this amp especially for 7 string because this solid state marshall just keeps everything sounding pretty tight and punchy when you get down to low tunings and 7th strings. It definitely has plenty of gain as well.

    Is there a way to activate the fx with just the footswitch while staying on the clean channel?

    • @aaronarandac4
      @aaronarandac4  2 года назад

      Perhaps if you have the right foot switch. Mine came with a two button one that switched only clean and dirty channels and overdrive 1 and 2. However, I have seen some that have the second switch labeled dfx for digital fx.

    Would I need a boost in front of this amp to get a good high gain metal tone?
    Edit: I ran one through a 4x12 with V30’s on OD2 and it absolutely ROARS. It’s got plenty of gain. The boost is only necessary if you want to tighten the tone up some.

    • @aaronarandac4

    • @aaronarandac4

      Well it depends where the guitarist wants to go. This being a whole amp allows more room to grow for live performances and is one of the best band for you buck guitar half stacks. If youve already got an amp you like then you may not need another. Unless you want another.

    What he means with 12 o clock and dialed in? Contour?

    • @aaronarandac4
      @aaronarandac4  3 года назад +1

      12 oclock refers to the position of the knobs as if it were clock hands. Dialed in, means turning the knobs to get the sound youre looking for. And contour means outline, so kinda like the shape of the distortion tone on this amp. Which affects how it sounds overall.

    I have owned this amp for maybe 8 to 10 years and it has been a well known fact that it's hot garbage. There are myths about modding it to make it sound decent, i even succeeded at one but maaan does it not like anything but trashy music. Gave the top away after using it for EQ (digital, decent) but dude...why you would review it in such detail in...2017 is beyond me. even thinking about that amp makes me tired.
