Hey Brandon, do you know how i can get in touch with paul? i have a possible music opportunity for him! to play guitar on 2 full albums of music im recording. i would like to speak with him.. please let me know. ( this is NOT a joke! ) ~ Thank you
I have the 100HDFX. A tool is only as good as the person using it. Those who say that solid states are no good are like those who blame the hammer because they bend a nail. There is a video of Doug Aldrich playing one at pre NAMM event and it sounds incredible. There is ths story of a blind beggar playing violin. Two men approached him, one being a concert master violinist. The blind said his violin was not very good. The master violinist asked if he could play it. He tuned it and played a beautiful song. The blind begger said his violin had never sounded so good. Eddy Van Halen said tone starts with your fingers.I have a MG100HDFX and it sounds great
I also have the MG100HDFX and love it but it would be nice to turn the reverb on and off. Is there another footswitch that you know of that does that or am I stuck with the one that came with it?
Troy Redford Sorry for the late answer. I just stumbled upon this video. I'll recommend Boss FS - 5L Latch FOOT SWITCH. I bought mine 8-10 years ago, and I'm really happy I got that little hhelper - especially on a gig
@ flash of the blade. It really does starts to look like solid state amps really have progressed tremendously. Is they are definitely more reliable that's for sure. It still is mildly hard to swallow but I could see dealing with both of them tubes and solid States. I still think there's a place for tube amps Yet although it does seem like there's less and less of them out there Then again maybe I'm wrong. But I really doubt if I would be turning my nose up against solid States like this
This amp actually does sound this good, and even better if you play as well as this guy. I keep finding new tones even after 3 years! A favorite feature is the headphone jack for late night jamming. Great amp.
These older Marshall MG 100FX Amps are remarkable I have a 2009 Marshall MG 100FX 2X12 Combo 12 years old and still going strong and sounds fantastic I would never part with it
I think about 90% of the hate for the less expensive amps like this is because every time you see a vid of one, the guy is still learning how to dial in a good tone. This guy does a good job though, and lo' and behold it actually sounds pretty good. Great for the price, imho.
I'm a lifelong novice guitarist for more than 30 years. Last summer, started getting serious and needed a serious amp for gigging. Came across the MG100 HDFX on Craigslist with the 4x12 Cestion Speakers A&B cabinets to make it a full stack for $550. I thought it was a steal of a deal - and still do. I'm reading all this crap about how it's a solid state amp and doesn't compare to a tube amp. Thank you Paul Kramer for putting my fears to rest. An amp is as good as the musician playing it. This video is proof positive this amp is good enough to jam with the big boys.
If you can find a copy, get "Micky Baker's Complete Course to Jazz Guitar" It's OLD, but one of the best. Get the one with a yellow and black cover. Excellent book, and you will be amazed with your chords.
+Steven Roderick You made a smart choice there - running through a cab with good speakers fixes most of the complaints people have with this amp. It's the stock speakers they put in the combos and matching cabs that let the MG down.
Yup. Their pickups are supposed to be able to sound like a single coil, a P90, or a humbucker, and they came out slightly before the Seymour Duncan P-Rails which do a similar thing, so I don't know if Seymour Duncan copied the idea from them, or if they both got the idea at the same time.
There are alot of haters for this amp, but I know for a fact that if you bought this after having a 15w amp you wouldn't be disappointed in any way. You'd have WAY more volume, a way more serious/enjoyable variety of tones, it would just open up a bunch of possibilities that your 15w amp very likely cant offer. I'm not saying this is the only amp that would provide all these things, but for the price it would be a great 2nd amp. Its a pretty high gain amp throughout though. Hope this helped
It's definitely worth the buy. It's like $600 new, and it's amazing. I just use the clean channel, but it's an amazing amp. It sounds pretty close to what it sounds like in the video. The chorus and flanger have a different sound, but the distortion channel sounds amazing.
@ELSKYO When people say that, it's in reference to a tube amp. That's because to get the most tone out of your tubes you've got to crank it.. so lower wattage = better tone at lower volumes generally. This however is a solid state amp, so that doesn't apply. However many would argue that SS amps don't sound as good, but that's up to your ears.
I have one of the older models, and if you're into blues/rock and roll, man this can be a promising amp. It doesn't have the clean color of say a Vox, but you can still get a desirable tone.
I found one of these up for sale for $300, it comes with the head and a 4 speaker cabinet. I like to play stuff like 80's rock so I was wondering if that's a good deal or what.
@DeathMetalAngel123 Not 100% sure, but it would make since that you could. It is not a tube amp so you can leave the output open (no cab connected) without damaging the output.
Nice playing Paul. I got a flawed one of these heads in red tolex from a pawn shop in Toronto. The input was non functional and I had to solder a 1" wire to bypass a faulty part of the printed circuit board. Success. I found it sounds best with Gibson burstbucker pickups. Single coils on my Strats sounded a little thin through this. I have a matching cab which is actually from 1971 with original vintage G12M greenbacks. What a lot of fun I had when I had repaired it and started to play with it.
Agreed. I wouldn't ever, EVER gig with my vintage tube Marshall. Fuck that. Risk it getting damaged or stolen or something. This amp is great for gigging. Most people who go to see live shows wouldn't know a "shitty" amp from a "good" amp anyway. And for anyone saying the high-gain stuff doesn't sound full might I suggest you read about an invention called a god damn graphic equalizer? You'd be SHOCKED how good you can make a low end amp sound by boosting or cutting the right freqs.
Totally agree man, I love this amp for the price I picked it up for. Idk how others run their setup but with the master volume only on level 4 and running through my pedal board this thing absolutely cranks. I played a friends brewery recently and had the audiences beer bottles shaking at volume 4. Plenty of power!
I've heard so many complain about the MG's, but I really don't see anything wrong with this amp... It sounds pretty great clean, and the distortion is alright too, what's wrong with this amp? What makes it so 'bad' and hated as people say? What am I missing?
@lange555 As it said at the beginning of the vid, Hdfx is the head version, H for head. Dfx is the combo. Both have the same controls etc, just one has a speaker :L
he plays children of the sea by black sabbath at 2:37, thats a great song, this is a great amp by the way too, i'm leaning more toward vox but thats just me, if u want a classic rock amp with beatiful distortion, then this is the perfect amp for u, i don't think anything beats this amp when it comes down to that classic rock sound
please feel free to explain whats better for the buck...this isn't an expensive amp and it sounds decent for a solid state and has power to spare. I've had an MG250DFX for about 5 years now. for what I payed I still haven't seen anything that compares.
@FrosredZiggy: This is a solid state amp. I recommend playing some better amps in person, as this one isn't that great, at least in my opinion. Compare it to some other amps. But if you like it, that's fine for you.
Hey you asked what amp should you take, take the marshall 100watt because it has effeckts and stuf and it has a nice Metal distortion take the Marshall and you are on the good side.
Have to say one thing about this guy's demonstration as everyone else is saying here yeah this is a demonstration most demonstrations do suck. Just from the way he speaks he probably is an excellent guitar teacher hes got the right patience the right attitude. Is guys like him make the music business. At 1 time this might not have been his full time job his job who knows maybe he was a contractor maybe he did some kind of a trade maybe he went to college and this was his side thing but you could just tell from his way is this way that this is a guy that knows how to balance his life once his life hes not very stressed
i agree these mgs sounds pretty good bassically they are digital versions of the old marshall they use amp modeling technology to get their sound my only beef with the mgs are they break easily
I know this is long overdue but I've heard that Bugera 333XL is considered the cheap version of a Mesa Dual Rec. So far I've heard only positive things about their reliability as of late if you're still looking for that sound.
I own this head and a old tube Marshall. Using them in tandem is actually not bad at all. I think the overdrive channel on the 100HDFX is great for my sound...very smooth in my opinion. Is it as good as some of the higher-end Marshalls, Mesas, or Hiwatts? Nope. But it REALLY isn't bad at all. For the money it's a pretty versatile amp...and because it's solid state it's a good gigging head. That's my opinion. Clean channel isn't really beautiful though...need tubes for that.
Wise man said looong time ago: Marshall _always_ sounds good !! I've remembered that every now and then. Maybe he was right regardless of what reputation this particular MG100 has 👍😎
Either go for the MG OR check out Bugera Amps, absolutely great amps for the price. Im pretty sure they will have a cheap version of the Dual Rectifier youre looking for. Look under products on their website and they list all their amps with detailed description
a guy just tried one of these heads that owns a splaun 100 said he likes what he heard for practice so he doesn't have to drag 2800.00 around in the northeast climate kind of a working testimonial there is a 74' sl for sale same place i'd use the mg to back it up wouldn't be afraid the mg is a high end ENTRY LEVEL amp and a good one
actually a cheap marshall haze is about 399 dollars at guitar center and you can find even a couple good tube amps right now for real cheap. Burgera tube amps are in market ranging for 300-700 and you get a tube amp sound for a reasonable price. i had a gibby standard and a marshall dsl 50 stack and the sound is closest than this solid state.
yeah i know i agree man! marshalls just have the best sound ive really ever heard, i like my guitar but its also a metal based guitar, it can still be used for a lot. gibson and marshall is like the perfect match up haha
Having owned the amp for 3 years, i'd say todays smart money is on the spider III, It's alot more versatile than the marshall and it's not as bad as the spider IIs. The distortion may be analogue but if you think it's good, you're kidding yourself.
first off thanks a mill for the response. In terms of amps i dont know jack apart from i want a certain sound. I understand the pros use thousands worth of equipment but i want something as close for a price of £300. Im british too. I play mainly drop c and drop b, machine head type songs. My current behringer is a small ass amp i got with a guitar starter pack. I want an amp which can give tonnes of gain but with clarity so i can hear notes. The only effect i want is reverb.
this amp does NOT suck - you just have to know how to eq it... which most people don't. LOL The effects are probably the weakest part of it... This setting kicks ass on this amp: bass - max(I know that sounds like too much, but trust me) middle - 11 o'clock treble - 12 o'clock gain - 9:30 on clean/crunch channel, 12 noon on od1/od2 channel. I know that sounds like it's not high enough, but again, trust me - too high and the gain turns to mush. contour - sweep for classic or modern tone
remember tone starts in the fingers the kind of amp you use does not really matter I cant a afford tubes I have a modified MG 15 with an external speaker jack and a foot switch my step bro is an amp tech lol he is also going to be installing an fx loop
Check out the randall solid state half stack setup... very good rock.metal amp that can clean up.. or the bugera v55 head with the 4x12 cab... the bugera is tube the randall is not..
I hate people who despise others for using solid states like these. You can get this exact amp for around £200 second hand. The smallest marshall tube that I could find, I think was the TSL601, you couldn't get anything less than £600. For all you high rollers out there, just back off the people who can't afford it.
Wayne Static of Static X uses these believe it or not. Trust me I was as surprised as anyone but lets all remember Dimebag swore by solid state Randalls, only changing to tube Krank amps right before is tragic and senseless death. I agree if you can get a decent tube amp get it but hell it's about the music and I wouldn't let the fact I had to start out on a solid state amp keep me from seeing a million faces and rocking them all! Have a great one guys!
if your going to buy this amp, go to guitar center and ask trhem for a limited edition one. tey come in red, purple, and silver all costing the same price as the regular black one!!
I think you guys are completely forgetting what the Overdrive on this amp is used for... If you comparing it to Peavey amps (6505) (5150) There shouldnt even be a comparison... The Marshall Is used for classic and modern tones.. The peavey amps are for metal.... Except the Valveking its a pretty all around Amp
@lange555 Because they Discontuned the hdfx and replaced it with the HFX probably for marketing purposes because the D stands for DIGITAL and that turned most old folks off from it :D
is this amp only for on stage because i hear some guys saying ' u don't need a 100 wattage amp unless you are a guy giving concerts and shows' Or can you use it too to practice
I have got one of these combo and a tube amp. Well offcourse the tube is much better. I really like this amp though. It's very very versatile and keeps the good tone at kinda mid-range loud volumes. Well later it doesnt but that's all solid state's thing. What i like is the ulta sensivity of the knobs and the effects which are still digital but indeed very good. You can have fun just by discovering new sounds in this one. For metal it's better to have pedals. I recommend (not al mg series tho)
if yall think this head and speaker suck yall are really losing a win this amp is the best amp i haver used it is super loud and good for metal and everything else.
Thats not all true...I mean...price wise (new amps) whats the next Marshall half stack on price? If I recall correctly is more than twice the cost of this one...what I did was getting this half stack and got a good multi effects, Im really pleased not to mention that unless you gig you'll never going to be able to warm the tubes enough to really make the tube head worth...
Had this amp like 10 years now...Only recently have I truly realized just how few good sounds you can get out of it. Every one of the transistor knobs on the front now crackles and the signal cuts from loud to quiet frequently. The effects knob has hardly worked for over 5 years, with delay being the only effect that consistently applies itself when dialed in. Might just need serviced. Clean tone is bearable, OD2 is pretty decent for heavier stuff. I find myself using the exact same levels for EQ and gain all the time. Not a good practice amp as it dials almost straight into a loud tone. Looking forward to replacing this very soon.
I've had that issue on some of my old amps. I usually pull the knobs off, spray some electric cleaner where the knob goes on, twist them back and forth till they free up and they're usually good to go for another several years. Depending on how dirty they are you might have to make a second pass. Hope that helps :)
(settings continued) channel volume - max FDD switch - ALWAYS ENGAGED master volume - whatever you can get away with without the cops being called on you. LOL reverb - 9:30 effects - off, except for on solos, then abit of chorus & delay try it - you'll like it!
punch in bugera 333xl vs mesa dual rec....you can get a 333xl used for $300+ or new for $500....put some 6l6 and some groove tube preamps and it will blow your mind
This guy was my guitar teacher a couple years ago.
BEST. TEACHER. EVER.
Hey Brandon, do you know how i can get in touch with paul? i have a possible music opportunity for him! to play guitar on 2 full albums of music im recording. i would like to speak with him.. please let me know. ( this is NOT a joke! ) ~ Thank you

The story about the blind violinist makes me remind the Lazlo lozla top cat's chapter lol. Great comment my friend. Grettings from México

You're pretty cringe.
finally someone who knows how to review/demo a product!!! and can actually play too!
This amp actually does sound this good, and even better if you play as well as this guy. I keep finding new tones even after 3 years! A favorite feature is the headphone jack for late night jamming. Great amp.
Do you still have it?
This guy does better reviews than anyone else on youtube, and he can play
this is quite and an amp. i was extremely happy when i saw this in my living room on christmas. thanks mom.
I have used the Marshall MG 100 FX seven years No need for Tube Amps.
Did the fan stop working anytime?
@@santiagomoreno696 I have a 2009 Marshall MG 100FX 2X12 Combo no issues at all it's a remarkable Amp
I got one , great value, Good ampli
@jawspp
not everyone can afford the JCM amps, so they go for this, run pedals through an mg100hdfx and you have a pretty good setup.
Criminally underrated/overhated amplifier. I own this head along with a SLP100 and an Orange RV100III, and it can seriously hang with the big boys.
I have a chance to buy the whole rig with 4x12 cabinet for $350.00 what do ya think.
Joe Dov Unless you’re planning to save up longer for a nice tube amp or something, I’d say go for it!
it sounds great because the clean channel is so smooth.
Sounds really good, especially for a solid state amp.
gosh I love those jazzy abstract chords.
If you can find a copy, get "Micky Baker's Complete Course to Jazz Guitar" It's OLD, but one of the best. Get the one with a yellow and black cover. Excellent book, and you will be amazed with your chords.
I've had this head since I was 14 and its never let me down I'm running it through a carvin 2x12 open back cabinet with celestian speakers
I absolutley "LOVE" the sound of this combo!!!!
Wow man, love the progression on the clean stuff.
INSANE !! ... My faith in my Marshall MG100HDFX half stack has been renewed haha
Not sure why this amp gets so much hate. Ive used it for its clean channel for 16 years and haven't had any problems.
I wish there were tabs for everything he just played. Great demo!
Have 3 of ‘em . Great versatile amplifiers. Good with pedals too
It's definitely worth the buy. It's like $600 new, and it's amazing. I just use the clean channel, but it's an amazing amp. It sounds pretty close to what it sounds like in the video. The chorus and flanger have a different sound, but the distortion channel sounds amazing.
That amp is legendary, its very difficult found aome of those.
That Vox is nice as hell
Excellent demo given by a very good musician. I enjoyed the clean playing where you actually have to know something about music.

I just got this amp for around $315 used, and I absolutely love it
Love these Amps i wouldn't use a Tube Amp over Any of The Marshall MG 100 Watt series Amps
This guy did a great job at getting the classic Marshall roar out of these solidstate MGS:)
@lange555 As it said at the beginning of the vid, Hdfx is the head version, H for head. Dfx is the combo.
Both have the same controls etc, just one has a speaker :L
This is perfectly accurate. It's not a gigging amp and isn't very full. The clean can be with a good set of humbuckers driving them though.

i love my mg combo i put a v30 in it and sounds great
Regularely these guys make awesome stuff sound bad, but now the made a shitty amp sound like a JCM800
@lange555 The MG100HFX is the newer model, which has replaced the now discontinued MG100HDFX.

rip Jim Marshall :'(

In terms of amps i dont know jack apart from i want a certain sound. I understand the pros use thousands worth of equipment but i want something as close for a price of £300. Im british too.
I play mainly drop c and drop b, machine head type songs. My current behringer is a small ass amp i got with a guitar starter pack. I want an amp which can give tonnes of gain but with clarity so i can hear notes. The only effect i want is reverb.
Lovin' that Vox
Solid versatile amp
A friend has the 100W combo version of this amp. We recorded a demo/EP with it and we got a decent sound but with really heavy EQ in the mixing stage.
Hearing Children of the Sea by Black Sabbath at 2:40 made me like this demo video a lot
i think its a small kerry king marshall combo amp. im pretty sure its 15 watts and has a 8 inch speaker.
@Blompcube I'm referring to used cars you can get on craigslist for like 2000$
I was worried this wasn't going to have a very good clean sound, but i must say, it's pretty damn hot!
if you have the right guitar and the right settings on this amp you will also have your fun with it.
this amp does NOT suck - you just have to know how to eq it... which most people don't. LOL The effects are probably the weakest part of it...
This setting kicks ass on this amp:
bass - max(I know that sounds like too much, but trust me)
middle - 11 o'clock
treble - 12 o'clock
gain - 9:30 on clean/crunch channel, 12 noon on od1/od2 channel. I know that sounds like it's not high enough, but again, trust me - too high and the gain turns to mush.
contour - sweep for classic or modern tone
Thx for the tone tips! Do you have decent blues settings? 🤔
@@CarlitoM77 Just back the gain down & add some mids & reverb to taste
@@TonyHookedonVanlife It'll try that as soon as I get home thx!
@@CarlitoM77 no prob! You'll have to tweak abit to your personal guitar's natural tone...
good luck man! you should post a video of you demoing it! i would like to hear the kinds of sounds you like with it
Considering it's a solid state amp, it's sounding pretty darn decent.
I have this amp and i run a Dunlop Dime Cry Baby, an MXR KFK 10 band EQ, and an MXR Smart Gate. I think it sounds pretty good.
@lange555 something different, i know for sure that the HFX has like 8 knobs and the HDFX has a bunch
He Broke out with the song Passion at the begining. Its on the Seasons Album.
Great CD.
remember tone starts in the fingers the kind of amp you use does not really matter I cant a afford tubes I have a modified MG 15 with an external speaker jack and a foot switch my step bro is an amp tech lol he is also going to be installing an fx loop
Many Blackheart, Fender, Crate, Peavey, Bugera, just to name a few. And they ALL beat the crap out of the MG.
@FrosredZiggy It is a solid state amp.
(settings continued)
channel volume - max
FDD switch - ALWAYS ENGAGED
master volume - whatever you can get away with without the cops being called on you. LOL
reverb - 9:30
effects - off, except for on solos, then abit of chorus & delay
try it - you'll like it!
Does he play different songs or does he improvise?
If he improvise now he is..........GOOOOOOOOOD!
punch in bugera 333xl vs mesa dual rec....you can get a 333xl used for $300+ or new for $500....put some 6l6 and some groove tube preamps and it will blow your mind
