I had a record shop(remember them) back in the 80s and 90s, and will never forget the week this single was released! I wasn't a fan at this stage, but was certainly aware of them. I was first struck with the artwork, which was so different from the usual band cover shot. Then i played it and was instantly floored by the repetitive piano and gorgeous guitar bursts, not to mention the tumbling cavalcade of drums! It was about a week before i deigned to play the b.side, and that was it!! One beautiful musical epiphany later, and Talk Talk were my new favourite band. We all know the rest with their glorious final two albums, and Mark's spiritual hymn to silence, and then nothing!! Inside, i knew this was the last we would hear from them, but that still didn't prepare me for Mark's passing. How could it? I'd accepted that there would be no more music, but no more Mr Hollis? Simply unspeakable, yet tragically true! So, i once more give thanks to Messrs Hollis, Harris and Webb for showing me what this thing we call music is truly capable of doing to the human soul!! Peace and Love to every Talk Talk lover out there!! ❤ ✌

Das Tollste daran, auch mein Sohn findet es Mega. Also wird es von Generation zu Generation weiter gegeben. Das bedeutet ewiges Leben. Dankeschön.👍👍
I was out of high school in 1983 where people were playing King Crimson, Ozzy / Black Sabbath, etc. Moved to city on my way to university and started to go to 2 bars around with friends: First listening to Eurythmics, The Smiths, Simple Mnds, Talk Talk, Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, REM, The Fixx, U2, etc: What a blisst! And imagine listening to "It's My Life" on the radio! I started DJ'ing in these years, music was literally exploding everywhere in various genres, sound, etc. Companies weren't afraid to put money on "one hit wonder" and MTV was a new thing: It was insane! Musically, i miss those times so much. There always will be good music but now it's harder than ever to find it: With all the communication means we have, it should be the opposite. But when there's so much music produced by AI and computers coming out, you end up listening to so many lifeless stuff, flat sound, utterly compressed sound (loudness war), etc. True artists like Mark Hollis are lost / buried under all the dull and lifeless stuff coming out. Back to Hollis and Talk Talk, their 2 staple albums "Talk Talk" and "The Colour Of Spring" are unforgettable and timeless to me. His voice was special and with music, carrying a very strong ambiance and message. I didn't know Mark Hollis passed away 2019: RIP and you made your mark!
One of the most underrated songs of all time. It's not just technically and lyrically perfect but it's absolutely timeless as well. In 1000 years it will be still relevant and a joyous experience to listen too. It's a phenomenal piece of music.

You could release this today for the first time and it would still sound fresh. It was that far ahead of its time. I don't think the world was fully ready for Mark Hollis back then. That's talent.
Legendary tune! Nothing compares to the epic sounds/music that came from the immortal Eighties! Best decade of my life personally as a kid and by so many others accounts! They truly dont make powerful, meaningful a s beautiful music like this anymore so think its time for a 80s renaissance/revival!?
absolute the last time I heard a great classic song was about 30 years ago, now we've got ed Sheeran, dua lipstick, ect and all instantly forgettable songs, I read about the court case ed Sheeran had recently, I'm a musician I thought I must have a listen to the multimillionaire ed Sheeran song, what a load of bollocks, disgracefu, I nearly choked on my pie and mash. but I suppose good luck to him, he's come along at the right time and the right place when music is abysmal, lucky eh.
"He knew how to create depth of feeling with sound and space like no other. He was one of the greats, if not the greatest." Paul Webb former bassist Agreed.

Comment pouvoir oublier… ⛩️🦋🌿🧡💛🧡
This song reminds me of the time after I fell from my bike and broke my shoulder. I had just been fired and was struggling to get my sh*t together when I was forced to be at home, unable to carry my little 1yr old and feeling pretty much useless and a dead weight. Never thought of s*icide or something like it, but a lot of times felt like dying by chance would not be bad at all. One night I couldn't sleep due to the pain that was such that not even the painkillers were working anymore. Somehow this song appeared to me and it hit hard. It also carried me through the painful physiotherapy sessions and through the months in which I would gradually regain the movements of my arm, and then through the period in which I was searching for a new job, that eventually arrived. After almost one year, I regained 95% of my arm's movement, which is pretty functional despite of the pain that sometimes comes back. The Doctor said I was lucky since the broken bone pieces could have severed some important nerves or even an artery, in which case I probably wouldn't be here now. I'd love to tell my story with a happy ending, saying I am living happily ever after, but that's not how it works. New worries, pains, challenges and problems appear, inevitably. And when it happens I tune to this song and remember that "Life's what you make it", really. And it helps me to remember that in my way, I am a survivor. I survived once. I can survive again. I read in an obituary for Mark Hollis that he always aimed for creating timeless songs. May I tell you, sir, wherever you are, you did it and you touched my life profoundly. And I will always be thankful for that. God Bless you.

Not sure if it's the most underrated songs of all time but in my opinion, one of the greatest songs of all time.
It's not underrated at all but one of the most famous songs ever.
Seriously? 😱 Dull, derivative, IMO.
@@7070Phantom Many old songs are timeless and still relevant. IMO, if you can't see the value in this song, then sadly your the shallow dull and boring one!
I will be listening Mark and “Talk Talk” till the end of times. Mark’s unique voice always gives me goosebumps from head to toe. I miss you, Mark 😢
Yes to all of that!
80's FOR EVER AND EVER BRO!!!!!
Beautiful words. Gave me goosebumps.
Listening until end of times?? Ironically that's now!!! Someone said will life ever return as we knew it?? No I said only return is Jesus now very soon so listening to end of time we are true x
Yeah Mark had a very distinguished voice. I love it!
Possibly one of the best songs ever written.
Why is this song not on any of the top100 charts in the 80s?
I completely agree. It's magical which is why I come back to it when feeling down.

This has gotta be one of the most incredible gems that has ever been written in human history.

I think the 80's was full of gems. How about Loving You with Fergal Sharkey, Broken Wings by Mr. Mister, Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds, Guardian Angel by Masquerade -- and so on .. there are imho tons of great songs (and movies) from the 80's.
Thank you it's brilliant forever

We owe an absolute debt of gratitude to Mark and the other 80s legends who soundtracked our formative years for us. RIP fella, unique voice, extraordinary talent.

I listened to this then and I listen to it now and it never gets old. This group is still my all time favourite group. Brilliant songwriters and instrumentalists. Mark you left us too soon. RIP
Mark Hollis was a music genious and was fortunate enough to be surrounded by good musicians. The orchestration is so detailed and so well arranged... Needless to say more...

What an incredible testament to an amazing artist. Mark Hollis really was a genius. I remember playing his music on repeat, there wasn’t time for the off button.
Life’s what you make it. ❤
Perfectly stated... and Hollis and bandmates would take the true fans on a wild sonic journey with Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock! We won't see that artistry in pop music again. R.I.P. Mark.

The short guitar riff during the song is so bone chillingly good.
That's David Rhodes, of Peter Gabriel fame. Excellent guitarist.

@@michaelparton71 you just don't get any lyrics tike that today, or maybe I'm to old and stopped looking. Thus I'm reduced tae YT looking for either confirmation or denial.
Wow. I needed to be reminded, because of some of my life's circumstances, of that wise lyric.
You could have asked 'if we are listening in 2020', but no, you wrote this beautiful anecdote instead. Thanks for sharing!

Hola,su voz,te da energia
R.I.P. Mark Hollis.
Geteiltes Herz, frohe Weihnachten

The Fixx what a band

Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
I'd give that title to XTC. But Talk Talk are a close second.
They weren't underated, but they never made it big.
I’m 55 and the music of the 80s is sorely missed. Now I’m just nostalgic and will never forget dancing to such great music at the underage night clubs as a teen. What a wild childhood. Thanks to Mark Hollis for shaping my musical mind.

Ditto. 55 also
You were in you're teens when eighties came along. I was in late 2010's till 80's songs came to me till I got my drivers licence
You could release this today for the first time and it would still sound fresh. It was that far ahead of its time. I don't think the world was fully ready for Mark Hollis back then. That's talent.
It needs to be on a soundtrack for a movie to give it new energy and a new audience. It would be huge.

absolute the last time I heard a great classic song was about 30 years ago, now we've got ed Sheeran, dua lipstick, ect and all instantly forgettable songs, I read about the court case ed Sheeran had recently, I'm a musician I thought I must have a listen to the multimillionaire ed Sheeran song, what a load of bollocks, disgracefu, I nearly choked on my pie and mash. but I suppose good luck to him, he's come along at the right time and the right place when music is abysmal, lucky eh.
But they recorded so many.🤗

You put the words out of my mouth!!! Legendary underrated song. I hear it and I will ever do! Mindblowing!
Still sounds amazing after all these years.
This band music is timeless. This song even fits in with todays music nearly 40 years on great bass guitars keyboards drum vocals words. Superb song n group
