- Talk Talk were one of the most innovative and original British bands of the eighties. They enjoyed a string of successful albums and singles both in the UK and right across Europe. 1986 was the band's only appearance at Montreux and caught them at the height of their success. With a set list packed with hit singles and lead singer / main songwriter Mark Hollis' charismatic performance they delivered an outstanding concert that draws a great response from the packed Swiss crowd.

This is a perfect example of why the 80’s had some of the best music!!! RIP Mark
I’m 56, this band was popular in my high school days. Great music. Went to concerts and people were actually in the moment WATCHING the bands and not filming with their phones. I miss the 70s and 80s and 90s.
Who's listening this still in 2024?????????
Me! I absolutely love talk talk,i could watch them live all day every day and never get tired.
Me of course 😊
I'm new to Talk Talk and can't get enough. Love this sound!
me!
love this music!
Eva and Adam
Can't believe he is no longer alive. God you took the wrong person I know he suffered but we are all sad when we watch these videos.
😢😢😢😢😢
Look kids... real musicians, playing real instruments, playing real songs!
And no mobile phones recording the live act. Just talent and people relishing the talent. Rip Mark. Genius gone but never forgotten 💔
Very true Mark was such a great talent. RIP Mark
And in Montreux!
pure genius
One of the greatest bands of all time. Timeless.
This is one of the best hauntingly, melodious songs I have ever heard, ever. Beautiful work Mark Hollis. Rest your soul, friend.❤
Everything about this song and performance is perfection! The guitar rift … the rolling drum beat … and that voice gives me chills … just superb! ❤️ Mark Hollis you were a genius and a remarkable talent! Gone too soon .. RIP! 💔🖤
agreed one of the best voices from the 80's I was so bummed when I heard of Mark's death in 2019
This guy was tremendously ahead of his times.
They were so underated by many such a crime rip mark Hollis x
WOW
@@finley5003 Don't you mean Such A Shame?
i totally agree! He was a great genius!
Ya know, ppl say that a lot. Genius is genius. Plain and simple. It wouldn't matter what time Mark Hollis lived in, ppl would still be saying he was ahead of his time.
Such a unique voice . Live or recoded in a studio makes no difference. His voice is so filled with love and power and passion yet gentle and knowing... the sound of the human condition
Mark seems to be giving us knowledge on life through his beautiful words!
You’ve got a way with words.
Great words, deep truth!
When Mark sang you knew he meant it 😍 🙏
That is one of the best descriptions of a wonderful voice, that I've ever read on youtube comments Steve Pearce. Really accurate. Thanks for being brilliant. x
Who’s listening in 2023? All the way! All the way!!! RIP Mark Hollis! Miss the 80s! God bless everyone!
Coming up to 40 years ago! And still brilliant.
Me too and God first!
When crowds just listened and no filming phones and talked with others..
2024.... what a progress
Didn't realise what a great voice he had!
Baby, life's what you make it
Can't escape it
Baby, yesterday's favorite
Don't you hate it
Baby life's what you make it
Don't back date it
Baby, don't try to shade it
Beauty is naked
Baby, life's what you make it
Celebrate it
Anticipate it
Yesterday's faded
Nothing can change it
Life's what you make it
Great epitaph and exit song for my funeral I guess! Mark Hollis RIP. I wish I had seen them in concert in the 80s.
@@mop714 the goat
jesus christ... he sounded just like in the studio version, that is so hard to get
Anyone with me here? Wow iconic voice, meaningful, underrated and ahead of thier time music I'm still, and always will be, living and loving life with all of its everything ! I'm 60 now and watching and listening on June 25th/23 .Niagara Falls Ontario, CANADA..... You with me?. Music brings me right back to the memories of the moments, sights, sents, sounds and surroundings. What a rush, I just love it , always will.
Yes from France👌Mark Hollis had a wonderful voice… great band and great performance
In the 80’s great songs dropped out of the sky like raindrops, today we are in a parched arid desert
True... Sad
Agreed
Perfectly put.
As timeless as they come. A classic!
Beam me back to when there was music like this, now there's just nothing, a Desert!
1 of the best live performances I've ever seen in my life from any band.. Everybody gave 10/10 such a incredible, emotional song. I so miss the 80s
Awwww Mark 🙏
It's rare for a singer to sound just as good - if not better - performing live as in the studio. I wish I'd been around for Talk Talk's touring years, but I'm sure glad I was brought up in a time when their music & performances have been so easy to access. Still hard to believe Mark is gone...
incredible point you made. his voice is his own unique instrument and we are here for it.
Man, his voice - Beautiful.
What a perfect idea to play the bassline on the piano. Wonderful live version of a timeless classic ❤
Loved Talk Talk. Huge for me ‘84-86 along w Simple Minds, Echo and the Bunnymen, The The, and the Psychedelic Furs. These guys are tight and every bit as good live as in the studio.
Lee Harris is on fire!!! He bangs on the drums like there is no tomorrow!
All the band in it, actually. This is insanely good.
He's crazy good.
Such a deep groove always.
Every word. This one is permanently at the top of my library
Remember this walking around with a Sony Walkman...what an awesome experience it was and Talk Talk still is.
Still listening to this in 2021 - what a great jam. They sound really great live...RIP Mark Hollis
still listening in 2022)))))))))))))
Why are all the great ones gone?! 😢
@@angusmae16 Because time is undefeated...
@@angusmae16 no no no. All the great ones will live forever with songs)))
yes that's what i thought it's rare for bands to pull it off live
I didn't really take much notice of them back in the 80's but now realise what I missed, what a talented band.
Yes they were.. 🙂 Shame you missed the moment but least you know about the band now and can look up.. It's my life track I loved as much at the time and still hv it on tape lol check it out people who haven't heard it before.. 😁
Sorry the trac is called... Its my life.. 🙂 For those who don't know..
@@annettegardiner7270 different song Annette. Enjoy them both. Blessings R
You are right. What I heard of them was the classic tune "it's my life" because it was played so much in the radio. At that time I was very young and poor to buy records. But now, I really enjoy it and I can peel their music as brand new!
That incredible piano stab is unreal. Welcome to life
I miss Mark and his unmistakable voice....
i dont give a fuck what anyone says,,, this is the best band of the 80,s
Mark Hollis, such a great singer/songwriter.
This concert is so good.
Rest In Peace, Mark!
J'avais 14 ans en 1984 quand such a shame it's my life etc... Sont sortis aujourd'hui a 53 ans j'écoute toujours comme si ça venait de sortir.
RIP Mark Hollis. This is stuff of legend.
Sad, just seen this now, his passing
Love and forever grateful for the music he and talk talk brought into my life
@Degree7 Life is eternal, we just shed these bodies we wear. Our meatsuits die we don't.
"To me the ultimate ambition is to make music that doesn't have a use by date, that goes beyond your own time." - Mark Hollis
Kyle yes
My life anthem.. since I first heard this song back in 1986. Perfection.
One of the best songs of the 80s and that tells a lot. And Lee Harris is deffo one of the drummer gods of all times.
RIP MARK HOLLIS 🙏❤️
Mark Hollis
RIP dude
These Talk Talk Montreux live versions are masterpieces of songs which are masterpieces in their own right , RIP Mark and thank you for great music .
masterpiece com, mate.
how many time i've been in Montreux!?? one of the best place to enjoy.... but Talk Talk is unforgetable.!
What a voice. A timeless tune.
Great song during good times
MARK DIO TI ABBIA IN GLORIA 😢😢😢😢👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
One of the most memorable guitar riffs in history.
RIP...Another legend has left us.
Criminally underrated band. One of the best live bands…EVER! Not to mention giving the world some of the finest LP’s ever made.
It's as though every prick on RUclips comes across a band they barely know and calls them "underrated", even though everyone else on earth knows that they weren't.
@@lm5730 Everyone on earth? I’m puzzled to think that you know anyone that even owns a copy of “Color Of Spring” much less can name “that song that NO DOUBT cover”. Ease up Hoss, I’m 56yo & seen enough bands “1st” LIVE to consider myself no prick & I stand by my statement…CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED.🧐
I stand by mine "hoss"
That voice...r.i.p. Mark Hollis, thanks for the music!
Cindy Barg , yes
This song should have billions of plays, it's wonderful.
One of those songs with a really unique sound where everything comes together so perfectly. I'm surprised this band werent much more successful than they were in the 80s but they will never fade away..this and "It's my Life" will be always be huge.
Man we miss you Mark Hollis! Rip🙏🕊️👋😢
Magic. No autotune needed.
Met my wife in Naples in the early 90's and played this all the time we were together for the week. Drove back to UK and stopped in a service station station late in the evening. It was so hot I slept out under the stars with this playing all night. Will stay with me for ever.
Lovely story mate. I hope you're still with the Mrs!!
Richard. Yes agreed. That's one tight band. Love hollis. Sings the first bar. Then he and the drummers sort it out. The drums very difficult to play but Harris and Webb. Beat it. Dought it! Just wish it was 15mins long! Good luck
Mark Hollis Has Such a Powerful and Unique Voice and Its Amazing no wonder i loved Talk Talk still do
some bands keep going, churning out junk that packs stadiums, yet there's no heart and soul in there at all... not Talk Talk, they defined their own way and went out on a creative and artistic high. Videos like this show just how brilliant they were, and prove how they've rarely been matched since.
Mark hollis had the coolest voice in all of rock music
Here in 2024...Such a wonderful song, spine tinglingly good. Takes me right back to when it first came out and it was played everywhere. I still miss Mark and always will.
OMG I love this, Mark Hollis was just brilliant!
This song is still total 🔥 in 2023 - RIP Mark Hollis
They made this song in 10 minutes because the record company wasn't happy with the album, not commercial enough. Simply genius!!
This song is my motto. I adore the text. Mark forever❤
Love Talk Talk always! I'm groovin' with Paul (bassist) and Lee (drums) in perfect sinc. They're so great and it's fun to watch them move.
Can’t believe Mark has passed...it seems like only yesterday he was young. 64 is way too soon for anyone
I love this
Even better than studio version
Which is saying something
Makes me feel good
Which is what it’s all about 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Unbelievable live performance - another legend gone too soon
if you think that's what it sounded like live you're out of your fucking mind.
Incredible band, underrated totally...
The best of the best 👍 my favorite group ❤️❤️❤️love memory mark 😭😭
R.I.P. Mark Hollis. You were an incredible talent and performer.
I could watch Lee Harris play those drums all day long...Just look at his full body rythm!
right? AMAZING
@Per Madsen - yes mate! I've been thinking it about Lee since my teenage years 😍
That whole band gave it all in their live performances. So great!
Totally mesmerising. His timing, technique, physique all moving with complete perfection.
Sono felice di essere nata nei tempi dove si faceva LA VERA MUSICA . Talk talk veri musicisti . Mark ti ascolto sempre anche oggi, quel che ai lasciato nn a prezzo.... Tvb. 🌻
Di che anno sei? Io 82
These guys were way better than Simple Minds, and Tears For Fears, the royalty of the day.
Absolutely genius. One of the greatest bands to ever walk the planet...hugely underrated and influential
Rest in peace Mr. Hollis...thank you for the music..💗💗💗
Love the whole performance. What a bass line!!!
A VERY UNDERRATED BAND
Just wow. I loved this band at the time, but never saw this performance until now. This concert must be one of the greatest ever live performances - these guys were on fire. We all know that feeling when you are on top of your game, but these guys were all there on that night. Absolutely breathtaking - the energy, the musicianship - and the charisma. Could any modern band do this?
yorkschris answer is no !
You could take a look to "In the basement" of Radiohead. A live masterpiece
This is a great comment.. they are soooo good here. For an "intelligent" pop/rock group it's outstanding. The sound technicians also deserve gold medals.
Spot on. Never thought this song would translate so well to a live performance.
Excellent observation. Cheers
One of the best bands from the 80s. A voice that can never be mistaken nor duplicated...GREAT BAND.
Utterly sublime.
Dla mnie The coloue od spring jest najlepsza płyta. Słuchałem jej pierwszy raz po maturze w 86 r.Mistrzostwo Panie Marku. Niech Pan spoczywa w pokoju
Still listening in 2020 Yeah the 80's was some great music. Too many people gone. Tom Petty, Benjamin Orr, Eddie Money, Prince, Mark Hollis. R.I.P.
Indeed. Also, Ric joined Ben not too long ago.FML.
The wage of sin is death.
You can’t have your music heard without giving the devil his due.
It’s no coincidence most musicians die from cancer.
Shout out to the guitar player's bum bag. I had one of those in the '80's.
Great band. When i listen to the band i want to go back to the eighty 's. RiP Mark. Thank you for the unique musik
Why oh why was this band sooo underrated???
Totally unique vocal, original and timeless.... and what an excellent live band!!
A lovely man, Mark Hollis. Thank you for all the wonderful music and pleasure you have given us. I am sure you are playing now in heaven with the Angel's.
RIP.
Best live version I've found. What a performance
MARK HOLLIS.GRACIAS POR TUS PRECIOSAS CANCIONES.QEPD.
After 35 years, this song (and this specific version @ Montreaux with MEAN electric guitar) still gives me goose bumps...so relatable. RIP Mark.
Me too. I always liked Talk talk, but only got a fan once Mark passed. I'm stupid.
@@antonmk1244 you liked "Talk Talk"... doesn't that make you a fan? (let's forget "fan == fanatic")
@@oliveryt7168 I actually even really liked them but once I checked some you tube contents I got aware how good and interesting they were, after the one passed.
Das ist einfach großartig. Bei Live trennt sich die Spreu vom Weizen, Habe nie erlebt, wie bei Mark Hollis live und Platte so identisch sind. Die Musiker sind ebenfalls großartig. Eine glatte 1
Rest in peace Rupert black...thank you for the music 🎶 🙏
Paul Webb super🔥💖🎸😍 great perfomance you are awesome
When Music was real talent
How magical it must have been to see this live.
yeah..amazing...
The genius of Mark Hollis. RIP

One of the best bands of the 80s alongside Simple Minds. Musicians all of them.
Talk Talk did great songs. Mark Hollis was a master composer and singer. Hope you will like our cover of their hit song “Such A Shame”.
