    Excellent guide again.
    In my serving classes I also add one more thing: Where you look when serving.
    I always stress they should look at a point just over the top of the net, as this is the key element in the short serve. Of course it's got to land in, but if it goes too high over the net that's the last thing you'll see before it's whacked back at you. (I also tell them this shouldn't change for a flick serve, as you want to catch your opponent out). One of the training exercises I do is to push old shuttles onto the top of the net about about 300mm apart (sometimes I use clothes pegs instead). The players are then asked to serve between these, focusing on an imaginary line just above the net. Additionally I can move these shuttles along to practice short serving out wide as an option.

    • @BadmintonInsight
      @BadmintonInsight  3 года назад +1

      Great point Dave. We both look at the shuttle when setting up, and then look around straight ahead when serving (no matter where we are serving). It's definitely important to not change where you're looking otherwise you'll give your serve away 😆
      A new one we've started to see is people "spin serving" like Kevin Sanjaya, but a lot of people have to hold the shuttle a completely different way to normal - which means it's obvious they are only going to short serve (and try to spin it), so the returners can jump on the serve! It's definitely best to have the same preparation for each serve you'll do!

    Great video - again, so useful. I was going to ask about drive serve to the body, but I see someone has beaten me to it. I have found, when using this occasionally, my opponents struggle to return it - for me, it seems more effective than down the middle or out wide .... but I have a lot to learn .... and your videos are so useful - clear and straightforward. Thank you

    • @BadmintonInsight
      @BadmintonInsight  3 года назад +4

      Thanks again Tom, great to hear you're finding the videos useful! Yeah the drive to the body is very similar the the drive out wide as the direction of the shuttle should still be cross - not straight down the line. It often depends on where your opponents are standing, what shots they are ready for and also sometimes what grip they have. If it is done right, at the right time it can work however it is a risky option!

    Hi, guys, and thank you for providing great and seriously thought through videos every Sunday! There’s a bit of a time difference for me here in China, so it’s always Sunday evening I’m on the lookout😁I don’t know if you can answer this one: I’ve finally gotten good enough for my Chinese coach to want to partner me in doubles. He’s giving me a bit of flak for not moving after serving a low serve, thus not - he says - signalling to him in any way what I’m going to cover for the second shot (the opponents’ return), leaving him in it, having to prepare to cover everything in the back. We’re not using hand signals, btw. For me, I find it difficult to move to either side before I see where the receiver’s return birdie is going.. thoughts?

    Hi Greg and Jenny,
    I love your videos and have subscibed your channel ! ;-)
    I am David and a recreational club player. Thanks for showing us how to do serve. I have shared this video to my other badminton club friends and they loved it.
    Anyway, I am more a double player. When I am as a receiver, I hold the racket more less the same height as the net, The idea is so that I can react 50:50 to do net kill (when the serve is too high) and do blocking (when the serve is flat close to the tape of the net). My legs bend, my body is a bit to the front and ready to go fort (a short serve) and back in case of a flick serve.
    My double partner has another style of ready position as a receiver. His both legs are straight up and he holds the racket with a straight hand up high. When our opponents do a short serve close to the tape of the net, he is late to react and he just returns high. Then we are always in defending position. I told him many times but he keeps on doing it.
    It "arggghhhhed" me sometimes ;-). Well, maybe my technic as a reciver is also wrong.
    Could you please help me to make a tutorial as a receiver? Ready position (legs, body, how high should we hold the racket, etc?
    I would be very happy and highly appreciate if you guys can help me/us. ;-)
    Many thanks
    David

    Hi! I have a question - might be a bit outside your remit, but I may as well ask :) Firstly, just want to say I've recently taken up badminton and your channel has been an outstanding resource - thanks so much! But I'm having a real issue with serving because I only have one hand. I've managed to develop serves in table tennis, tennis, and squash, but I just can't figure out how to make it work in badminton. Is there any advice you could give? It doesn't have to be world-beating, but it would be nice to have consistency. What you would do if you were forced to develop a serve that uses only one hand? Thank you!

    Hi found your channel and ever since been watching every episode. Can you please upload another video on serve, but this time spend a bit more time on angle of shuttle and the racket. It was very quick on the angle of the shuttle and covered many areas like where to serve, which could have been another video on its own. A good, consistent serve is crucial in doubles and many international Pros have problems with back hand short serves.

    I'm surprise about lega positions during serve, I've learned racket leg forward or side by side but non racket forward is new for me. do you recommend non leg racket forward for national level players?
    Also, you indicated, in mixed doubles, stand position is further back than other doubles partners, why?
    I hope you can help me. I love all your videos, always learning. Greetings from Lima - Perú

      Leading with the non-racket leg is extremely uncommon - I only know myself and Marcus Ellis who does this (Marcus actually uses a different leg depending which side he is serving from!). There is no recommendation for what you should do, it's what is most comfortable for you!
      This was for the male in XD, sorry if we weren't clear! This is because the woman stands in-front of the man when the man is serving. The woman in XD and WD would always stand in the same place.
      Thanks for your support! 😊

    'you're more likely to hit your hand, which will decrease the quality of the shot'...
    ... and which will decrease the quality of your hand, too!
    Thanks for your great channel, invaluable for newcomers in the badminton world, like me!

    a player I know serves backhand.He holds the shuttle and racquet near his hip and brings both hands up together to hit the shuttle in one movement..
    .it is correct for height ,but is it a foul to move your left hand when serving?
