I literally just played a game of badminton this week after not having played for over 5 years and I swear your videos are more helpful to me than any coaching I received in high school.
Same here ...i can easily handle singles but when it comes to doubles i always look lost to the point that my partners wonder if i know how to play Badminton 🤦♂😁😂
Great help for amateurs like me. I play badminton at the local badminton club and more often than not my opponents returned my serve with a nasty smash or I ended up landing inches short. Obviously, I was doing it all wrong. But not anymore. Just took me two days to practice it and now I am good. Thanks for this tutorial!
Some commentators have mentioned this serve is a bit borderline in terms of height, and looking back I agree. I was focused on demonstrating the perfect shuttle path on camera, I ended up serving a bit higher than normal. I don't think you'd get called on a service fault in general play, but of course adjust as necessary!
Hi, I like your videos but I agree with the other commentators. You are quite tall and serving at armpit level. Even under the old serve rules it would be high. I hope you clarify this properly as it may give beginners the wrong idea.
csk1 yep.. right on point. The purpose of the video was to show : How to low serve without getting your head smashed if its a poor serve 😁.. But some people as I can see were quick to point out the Height issue. My suggestion .. please re edit the video and add a Text line stating the same. Anyway. Nice video. Audio was clear. Great work. 👏👏👏👌👍
Unfortunately true, the entire shuttle has to be under the lowest rib of your chest. In order to meet that angle of the arm must be more steep like 45 degrees, varies per person of course.
Great tips, I’ve been serving reasonably good backhands for years but these tips have improved my consistency and accuracy. One curious point though, all the serves you demonstrated would be classed as ‘ illegal ‘ due to the height of contact ( too high ) 🤷🏼♂️
most helpful video for an intermediate-to-advanced level players. serves make up significant part of the game and it has to be consistent, accurate and controlled. practicing alone is one thing but repeating it under pressure is a different thing - it requires the mental strength.
I tried this last week after watching your video through once. Spent half a game serving normally and then swapped to this serve half way through and won 7 serves back to back. You are a god
I saw your video and went to the badminton club right away, HUGE DIFFERENCE! My services became a nightmare for other players. I even made like 10 successive points just from my services. Please note that before this video, my services were not worth 2 cents (lot of failure), i had no confidence. I even won in a double Vs the trainer. More over once you get this point you will get a lot of confidence and you will be able to focus on the other aspects of the game to improve yourself. Thank you so much, the video is well done. Excellent video with sound advice for improving the backhand low serve. Was your serve borderline... maybe, but all professional players will push the laws governing the serve to their limit (just see how frequently pro players are picked up for an unlawful high serving action). Two critical badminton laws that might have been worth mentioning are that the racket head must be at a 'discernible downward angle to the racket handle' and that the first forward movement of the racket head toward the shuttle is deemed to be the start of the serving action and that the laws of badminton require the serving action to be a single, unbroken movement. As such it is technically possible to fault a player for moving their racket backwards and forwards toward the shuttle prior to hitting the shuttle. This is why you will see some players hold the shuttle behind their back until they are completely set up to serve.
Thanks for adding your comment and providing the laws regarding a legal serve. You were being rather generous in saying his serve was borderline. If you pause the video, there are several times when he makes contact with the shuttle to serve and the contact is clearly too high. Unfortunate.
@@davidh4557 I agree, a professional, world class player should be pulled for that serve. Generally, at a lower standard, the question I ask myself when umpiring is - Does this player gain an clear advantage from this serve? If the answer is "yes" then it should be faulted, if the answer is "no discernable benefit" then I might let it pass for the sake of not "breaking" the game.
Hi there, this video was very useful to learn the backend service. One thing I came to know that you missed talking is1.25 Meter height rule , “the whole of the shuttle shall be below 1.15 metres from the surface of the court at the instant of being hit by the server's racket”.
Many years ago, I taught a friend the backhand low serve by asking him to do exactly what you said in the video, which is the move his grip up the handle to the cone.
Thanks very much Jonathan, so much help. Can you make a video about mixed doubles rotations? And how is the guy supposed to receive the serv? Thanks very much Btw: badminton in panama thanks you very much, most of my teammates watch your videos🇵🇦💪🏽

115cm is rule, the net is 155cm high, and he serve at the midle of hit. The net itself is 75cm high, so if you serve at the midle height of it, you serve at 155-(75/2)= 117.5cm. A bit high. but not much, so with the angle of camera, it wasn't possible to be precise, but he is around the limit max. Not so high. :) Just 5cm too high, I think it was because he focused on the move more.
An interesting topic I think you could do for a video could be starting a discussion on rowdy behavior in pro badminton and the line between being passionate/psyching the opponent and being rude or belligerent?
Ok so. He’s going by the 150cm rule. He’s pretty short. But yeah, if you’re average height it’s normally bottom rib height to serve. If you are a female, which means you’re average height will be shorter, I’d recommend 1.5m rule.
Excellent video! It's the same information I provide to the athletes I coach. The only thing I do differently is that I personally hold the cork when I serve. I always have. Always will. I tell my athletes to hold the shuttle however they wish so long as they stick with it and don't change. My serve is one of my best weapons and I legitimately don't have to drop or toss the shuttle. It gets hit out of my hand very easily. By no means am I saying you're wrong and I'm right. I'm just pointing out that holding the cork isn't necessarily improper.

Love your tip on keeping it simple as I totally agree. More simple = More likely to suceed even when under pressure The thing is, you're locking the elbow and shoulder. So I presume you're doing a low serve by squeezing the grip and not moving the arm at all. That means if you want serve towards the back of the court (e.g. drive serve or flick serve), you'd have to pull your arm back first right? Cause if you do, in my mind that means the opponent will instantly know you're serving to the back-court the moment they see you pull your arm back Would love to hear your thoughts! =)
Can someone clarify for me the height limit for serving (singles and doubles, if they differ) as I get varying heights (main one being - bottom part of the rib (so the lowest point on the side which would be about the same height as your belly button region). Is this correct or is it actually higher? thanks in advance!
This is a great video, it all makes sense, thank you. My only criticism is that I think I think it should have mentioned that a great backhand serve technique allows you to hit either long or short without your opponent knowing which one you are going to use. The element of surprise is obviously very important. At my (low) level of badminton, many people I play with hit (unreliable) forehand serves, so I am glad you dismiss that...
the height the shuttle ur serving is high than ur last rib.so its going to be fault in real time matches. secondly due to new service rules that service below 1.15 m its absolutely fault serve.hope you understand and change your service from .
Hi! Just wondering, can you serve with the racket at chest level? Shouldn't it be coming from below the waist? I'm new at this so I'm not sure. Thanks! :)

Thank you for the clarifying instruction. Ons short peace of feedback, your service is a few inches above your waist. Especially at the serve 2:27 , it makers serving a lot easier at such hights, but is against the rules of play.
serve is the ONLY shot we can control. In the aspect of a game, missing serves becomes a big deal. You may as well forfeit the game if you can't serve.
You have a point. But serve in badminton doesn't affect the game as much as the serve in other sports, say tennis or volley ball. It's important but i wouldn't say "forfeit the game". We could still have some fun even when we don't know how to serve properly.
Anang Sulistyono you’re talking about having fun and if you don’t care as much, you can allow to miss. I was referring for players who compete, and that quality serve matters too, at certain level, advanced receivers can rush or fake your return serves.
Anang Sulistyono you’d be surprised, all levels can compete, even the elite make unforced errors on serves when under pressure . Serves may look easy and silly but can’t be taken for granted. Since badminton became a 21 pts system, all unforced errors is a giveaway pts, including missing a serve. There’s no more “2nd serve” to account the service mistakes like we had with 15pts system. So i kinda disagree with your statement “serve in badminton doesn’t affect as much”
tayonguyen his point is "its important but i wouldnt say "forfeit the game"". Why on earth compete players watch this video, even kevin sanjaya said, every players know how to flick serve. lol
I agree that it's one of the most important aspect of the game to get a tight low serve. Thanks for taking the time to make a very informative video on this. Only one thing I would suggest is if you could slow down a bit, that'd be great. Otherwise really appreciate your effort. Cheers!

"It's not the most fun thing in the world" Hitting shots with perfect precision with the shuttle landing perfectly on the line is one of the most satisfying things you can do
Magna M.St. Not a problem. There is one particular player I play against in my club and he always does a forehand serve and the shuttle falls atleast 8cm from his hand to the racquet. Don't be like him :)
What is the easiest serve to use for someone who's just playing socially to learn quickly during play? I don't want to get smashed like that, but I don't really need to practice so much :) The goal is play and have fun, so preferably something that leads to longer rallies
I've been playing Badminton on and off. I hope this year I will be able to play consistently. Its a good healthy activitiy for individuals or with families.
LOL Wrong!!! your serve needs below your waist. "The main rule here is that when you hit the shuttle, it must be below your waist. To be exact, the rules define this to be a height level with the lowest part of your ribcage. In other words, you can serve from a bit higher than the top of your shorts, but not much."
Tks very much for the tips, I tried the method (hold racket high and use the upper racket part instead) and has increased tremendously the accuracy and confidence in backhand low serve now. However, my backhand flick serve is still very poor (the shuttle does not have much power and is not aiming high enough), could you do a video on backhand flick serve also, as you said in a way that is repeatable like a formula every time? Many Tks.

serve is the ONLY shot we can control.
@@tayonguyen Players who compete doesn't need to watch this video. They already know how to serve.
Why on earth compete players watch this video, even kevin sanjaya said, every players know how to flick serve. lol
It feels like you are teaching everyone a basic physics but good dude i appreciate your explanation
Love you from 🇮🇳 India ❤️❤️❤️😘🥰

I agree that it's one of the most important aspect of the game to get a tight low serve. Thanks for taking the time to make a very informative video on this.
Only one thing I would suggest is if you could slow down a bit, that'd be great. Otherwise really appreciate your effort. Cheers!
do we need to serve from our hip level?

Nice video bro. Good tips. Will apply today evening!
Me: Not played badminton for years😒
My teacher: Tommorow is a match...we don't have enough people so I selected U.Practice hard ok
Me: *SPEECHLESS*😐
Also me: WHAT?!😱
"It's not the most fun thing in the world"
Hitting shots with perfect precision with the shuttle landing perfectly on the line is one of the most satisfying things you can do
0:00 litteraly me 😆😆
Such a underrated channel

...My shuttle doesn’t have feathers...
...Thinks for a while...
...I don’t even have one...
This video is really helped my serve! I tried these tips, my serve are precise and low consistently. Thanks man such a great and "simple" video.
Wait, you cant do a forehand low serve? Why tho?😅
Magna M.St. more time in the air and easier to attack.
Plus the shuttle would still drop a little, so randomisation in your serve can happen
Ztormrageheero Oh, Thanks! 😅 For a moment I thought there was actually a bwf rule against it!😅
Magna M.St. Not a problem. There is one particular player I play against in my club and he always does a forehand serve and the shuttle falls atleast 8cm from his hand to the racquet. Don't be like him :)
It is not a rule to not do a forehand low serve. I saw national players serve like that before in doubles
Thank you for explaining so many techniques. Can tell us about service return and smash return techniques both in doubles and singles.
2:02 ok im quit
Your pfp says everything
What is the easiest serve to use for someone who's just playing socially to learn quickly during play? I don't want to get smashed like that, but I don't really need to practice so much :) The goal is play and have fun, so preferably something that leads to longer rallies
If your opponent isn't good at smashing then you can do a forehand serve
0:18 lol
Many Tks.
