    I love the long dark, because even though it has game modes where every predator will want to eat your face, it goes out of it's way to say that its a fictitious scenario and acknowledges that wild animals usually leave people alone. So using these in the game could have been useful, in that it would have spared the devs from the endless shower of "it's not realistic" criticisms, *and* it would have made the game a bit more unique compared to other survival sims. I mean, this game already stands out quite a bit compared to all the forest/jungle/tropical island survival games out there, but hey, the more the better right :3

    • @AsaelTheBeast
      @AsaelTheBeast 3 года назад +14

      Bears are tanks. Actually killing one with a gun is difficult because your bullets can literally deflect off their thick skull (depending on how it lands.). Plus, they are so damn meaty that body shots arent going to put them on their ass unless you brought fuck-off caliber guns.
      Ideally, you shoot it in the heart, but if it's charging you, you dont have a clear shot- and unless you're a crackshot, getting an eye is probably not going to happen.
      So, yeah. If you aren't literally running around with bear hunting kit, you're probably better off with a spray. Better to just avoid them entirely, if possible, I think. Bears are basically the Apex predator of their biomes.

    • @tpe4ever
      @tpe4ever 3 года назад +16

      Having grown up in Alaska with many encounters with them, their behavior is erratic. Being nearly invincible, they don't take much seriously, nor do they need to. Startling a bear is actually the most effective response, exactly the opposite of the wishful thinkers imagine. They may run before they remember there is nothing to be afraid of. There are hardly any firearms that can even slow a bear down, but there are lots of stories from people I know about doing things like chasing a bear down the beach with a 2x4 and smacking one with it. Alaska is a wild place, quite literally. Humans are the guests, and you'd better not lie down, most bears will chew on you if you do that and there is no guarantee they will stop. What they say about .44s for bear protection is, "Be sure to file off the front sight so it won't hurt so bad when the bear shoves it up your ass". Better have the biggest pistol, or biggest rifle you can find, and maintain careful awareness of your surroundings and of bear sign.

      @dirtydoigler2116 3 года назад +1

      I live down in SEAK, but I heard the 10mm is getting more popular up north because of the magazine capacity compared to a revolver. I'd still go for the big bore personally, but even with revolvers there's still some debate. Some like the hardcast to push through the bones, but I know a lot of people that opt for hollow points because they doubt they'll even hit the head or spine, instead going for maximum pain and hoping the bear just runs away.

    • @tpe4ever
      @tpe4ever 3 года назад +1

      @@dirtydoigler2116 .460 S&W Magnum (revolver) is the absolute minimum I'd expect to have any chance at all, and even so, the odds are not good. The 460 has ballistics similar to a mid sized rifle, and a mid sized rifle is terrible odds versus a bear. I lived in a fishing village where it took 10 men with large rifles to take down a bear that had already eaten one of the residents (the father of a friend of mine), and they barely stopped it before it got to them even with 10 expert marksmen firing together.

    HA- I loved the video. I just wanted to say, the main reason the animals are so vicious (especially with the Aurora) its because the geomagnetic stuff in it got messed up (Hence the cutscene in the beginning, Astrid and Mackenize) and a geomagnetic storm brought the plane down. It messed up all electronics, and also how the animals act. There are also modes :)) Animals are more aggressive and ruthless, they were also somewhat glowing during the Aurora.

    How come no one informed this woman about the disclaimer at the beginning of the game and they didn't even mention it in the video? "The Long Dark is a post-disaster survival simulation. Although we strive to provide an experience steeped in realism, the game is not a replacement for proper wilderness survival training. As the result of the geomagnetic disaster which serves as part of the fictional foundation of the game, we have taken liberties with the portrayal of wildlife behavior. Hinterland Studio Inc. does not condone the wanton destruction of wildlife." It directly addresses the unusual behavior of the wildlife in this game, and the fact that the game's creators actually put a disclaimer is something I don't usually see in video games.
    That being said, I did really enjoy the rest of this video, but it seems unfair to the game to judge the realism of the game without mentioning its disclaimer regarding it.

    Things I've learned from hunting/fishing trips, experts in survival course, the Scouts, and first-hand experience in my life:
    Never wait to treat an injury. Even a half-assed treatment is better than not treating it when your survival is on the line. You can always treat an injury again later when you have access to proper medicine and doctors, but you have to survive long enough to do that.
    I saw the frozen body and had the same thought she did: "Now seating Donner, party of one!" When it comes down to starving to death or eating a corpse, you're probably going to eat a corpse. It's best to be mentally prepared to do distasteful things well in advance of any situation that may require it, which is why my survival course put me through 3 days of eating nothing but grass before slapping a hagfish in front of me. Hagfish is the most disgusting-looking thing I've ever seen and I still cooked and ate it. Hunger will drive you to extremes.
    Humans smell absolutely awful to most animals and they will actively avoid you in the wild. Very few are going to hunt you when there is small game they can hunt instead.
    Wolves are typically afraid of humans. Games and movies make use of the "Big Bad Wolf" trope, but generally, only sick or wounded wolves will attack an adult human if you aren't close to their home.
    Bears are very aggressive and territorial. Never go near them as you need a very big gun and to be a crack shot to have a hope of killing it before it kills you. Oh, yeah, and they don't scare easily either.
    Avoid walking on Ice. You can easily fall and injure yourself or, worse still, if it's a frozen lake you may fall in.
    Fishing without bait is a long, boring process. Fishing with bait is still a long, boring process.

      You don't need a very big gun, you just need a big gun if you are a crack shot to take down a bear. That said so few people even with military training are that much of a crack shot anymore it's almost better to have a heavy makeshift spear over a gun to take down a charging bear, since that spear can be used multiple times and in multiple ways instead of wasting what could be effectively your last bullet taking on a bear.

      And the ass would most likely be the best piece to eat. It's a spot that almost always has a large chunk of meat, there is a good layer of fat which your body needs for many of its most important functions, and the glutes are heavily used muscles so they would be some of the best tasting pieces of meat.

    Fun little fact: yes, bears are that ungodly tough. Quite a few folks prefer to load one round birdshot and the rest in the hottest slugs you can find, in case of bear problems. The idea is that a face full of birdshot will hopefully damage the eyes and nose without too much need for marksmanship, so that you'll have time enough to pump the other six slugs in while fervently praying.
    This doesn't always work. Well, it does in that the bear dies, but that might be two minutes after it's done killing you. Would not recommend, bears are bad news.
