    Speg, salt, and pepper shaker guy here, lol, and like you, I've had my share of disappointment from grading services. Yes, I agree that it's still nice to have them in a slab, but, wow especially that toner Merc., wow!!

  • @cockpill
    @cockpill 9 месяцев назад +4

    ICG has been great to me. They at least put everything in a slab. I’ve submitted stuff like that peace dollar just to get it preserved. Not caring about the grade. And they’ve never disappointed. They’re the only service I use.

      I like that mindset. There are things that you want the big names for but a lot of things that you just want slabed by s competent well priced services.

      True, I guess they are great for what you stated, just getting the coin in a slab.
      However, there is a joke in the coin community, saying that ICG stands for 'I can't grade'

    Have to agree on the 17-D dime...looks split to me. I've never been a fan of most toned coins.... there's an occasional one that looks nice but.... just not a big fan. Also, I just don't have that much faith in the grading companies as far as grading.... whether it's genuine, I think they're great but grading...not so much. Thanks for sharing, Speg. Take care, be safe and God bless! 🇺🇸

    Thanks Speg - I own a nice collection of coins from all 4 of the reputable and respected grading services. I think who you choose should be based on why…and not based on the company. What I mean is PCGS is great if you plan to sell your coins. NGC for collectors and all types of coins. ICG for modern and common coins you plan to keep. Simply confirm/validate them and protect them. Finally ANACS is kind of the same but they are also best for errors and varieties. My opinion. I recently sent 14 coins to ANACS and I was happy overall. Disappointed in one grade I thought should have been a little higher. Also the guarantee was great! One coin was turned in the holder. I sent it back and they fixed it at no cost to me and even graded another coin for free. Anyway, We have options and I think ANACS is coming back in a way that we should give them some time of day… They all have pros and cons.

    Not to bad my man. Au58 coins look mint state, however look for wear on the highest points of the coin both sides. The FSB in the middle area does look glossy as wear looks like that. It's still beautiful with those colors!

    Lots of factors go into grading and what you get back. Unfortunately can't put reasoning here. The AU would have to see in person. Top tier services don't miss the grade by 5 grades, a hint. 1st item is the gem in the pile...

    I haven't ever sent anything in. If I want a graded coin I will buy them from one of the big companies which I have very few of. Like the old saying goes, money talks and bullcrap walks. The US Mint is now selling 2023 proof S silver eagles. I bought one along with the W proof eagle to go with the morgan and peace dollar. I have noticed that when a coin is on the fence, they never grade up they always grade down. That's how they keep the upper number graded coins to a respectable number. Just my opinion.

    PCGS has a [remium for sure. I am sure it hurts when you do not receive the grade you were expecting can be upsetting. On the other hand. I am sure the argument could be made that PCGS is keeping its standards and quality at a level one would expect from PCGS. I know for a fact that you are not the 1st person to have been disappointed with their opinion, At any rate, TY for sharing.

    Quite frightening! The notion that the first two cleaned coins were detail graded is too much. Sometimes I watch RUclips videos with psychologists and neurobiologists who have pointed out time and time again how human behavior is prone to huge errors when arriving at opiniohns like coin grhading. Throw in the greed motive and we've got a mess. It goes like this: bless yourself to be somehow saint like , submit to (submit?)these companies and grit your teeth. Their fees are too high too. To me it seems like some of the graders don't think things through very well.

    I use NGC and the processing times are epically long. Also had 3 coins badly handled by NCS through their conservation techniques: dried solvent spots, rag marks, etc. You can obtain compensation if you complain enough and show them before & after images.

    My guess is the details Morgan’s a little too bright for the amount of wear on the coin Speg. The 1917 Merc is one of those good ole sliders(remaining detail in the hair). It would probably make low mint state 1/3 of the time. AU 58 coins in all types of holders can be a pretty good Cherrypickering opportunities as they often depend on the day/grader/workload. I think you will find that many times AU58 coins have better eye appeal than some coins graded low mint state. Just my opinion, but I am a nobody so there you have it.

I've seen coins that came back as AU58 with just the tiniest bit of rub on them that's hard to see.
