      I am trying to learn Spanish now. Ok the last 4 years, so I can communicate with my husband's family more. I went to a family event and understood most of what was said, but couldn't speak it. One of the older ladies said to me es ok. Then she turned to another and said she makes beautiful balloons, but her Spanish makes me think of butchering chicken day. I made her a beheaded chicken and smiled at her just like she was smiling at me while saying it. She then said tu entiendes. Haha

    • @jokermann100
      @jokermann100 5 лет назад +2

      Why? He lives in an English speaking country. Spanish wouldn't help him any at the end of the day. The real problem is you refuse to look past race and expect "minoritys" to fit in a box that makes your sense to your world view.

    • @Annetf17
      @Annetf17 4 года назад +3

      jokermann100 Learning Spanish does help even in an “English speaking country.” Growing up my parents forced the Spanish language on me. I hated it. They would tell me it would help me when applying for a job in the future. I didn’t believe them, but in every place I’ve worked at, I’ve needed to utilize my Spanish in some way. At the moment, I get paid more bc I am bilingual. I was also chosen over other applicants because I know Spanish. We live in a country with a large Spanish speaking population. I work in communities where the minority is the majority, hence why speaking Spanish does matter. It’s not about “looking past the minority.” It’s about being culturally competent. If I didn’t know Spanish, I would not be able to work with many of the hispanic families I work with and give them what they need. You cannot turn a blind eye to the different cultures that make up this country. We can’t always look “look past” race or ethnicity. We need to accept the fact that the USA is a melting pot of many cultures.
      I’m thankful my parents forced a second language upon us and didn’t expect us to assimilate. We shouldn’t deny culture, on the contrary, we should embrace it.
      I agree with lovey. If one of your parents speaks another language, why not learn it? It takes effort of course, but it is worth it. Even if it may not be “needed” in this country. I can tell you Spanish is though. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, along with English. It’s definitely beneficial.

      That is because people tend to follow stereotypes. I am of spanish and sephardic Jewish ancestry and just because I am white, green eyes and light brown hair no one assumes that I speak Spanish. The surprise they have when I begin speaking fluent Spanish. And I mean fluent since i lived in Mexico during my middle and high school years. I am now 44 years old. My brother on the other hand is darker, overweight and has straight black hair and brown eyes. He is always assumed to speak spanish which he does but not as fluently as i do.

    Spanish is not a white language. For 800 years the African Muslims, called Moors, ruled the different provinces that now form Spain. Not all Spaniards are white. Some of the Arabic dialect still exists in some modern Spanish words like "almohada" which means pillow. Spanish is the first European language ever spoken in America. English came later.

      There’s no such thing as the African language. Just the same as Mexicans don’t speak Mexican, Africans don’t speak African.
      There’s many different dialects as well as languages spoken in the African continent. Mind you Africa is not a country. It’s made up of many different countries.
      Educate yourself before making such an ignorant comment or question.
      To answer your question: You can’t compare the two.
      If you were to look at history, you’d find your answer.
      The language was lost because Africans who were enslaved and brought to the western world had to assimilate in order to survive or else they’d face dire consequences. (Much like Native Americans who were stripped off of their language and culture by European settlers. Assimilation and white supremacy is key here.) Furthermore, because the continent of Africa had a lot of trade, individuals living in Africa spoke many different languages. Therefore, bilingualism was not uncommon in the continent. To varying degrees, many spoke English as a result of trade.
      To say that all Africans don’t speak African is very ignorant on your part. They weren’t allowed to speak their dialect or official language bc of assimilation and some already spoke different languages as a result of the trade in the continent. Which is why in Louisiana some still speak Creole.
      Nowadays, first generation immigrants aren’t stripped off of their rights to speak Spanish. There aren’t any laws forbidding anyone to speak another language other than English as there was for some time pre/post colonization.
      The reason most parents don’t teach their children Spanish nowadays is up to mere choice and/or laziness (if we want to be up front).
      Next time someone asks you why you don’t speak Spanish, instead of trying to stump them with an ignorant question, be upfront and say I’m lazy or I didn’t want to learn Spanish. At the end of the day, learning Spanish is up to the parents and the child.

    Me to all the Mexican parents: Estan en los Estados Unidos. No enseñan español hasta la high school. No lo practican, ni escrito y parlado. Y ni les ponen las caricaturas en español. Pues en ese caso tiene mas proabilidad que abla japanese. Y eso que mi papá habla un poco despues de ver el Goku y el Pikachu conmigo.
    Basically it's just as likely for Mexican kids in the US to learn Spanish on their own as it is for them to learn Japanese.

    It’s really sad and STUPID not to teach spanish to your kids, like in this case. Kids learn a language eeeeasy. The best way is to teach them since they are babies at home. When they get to kintergaden, they’re gonna learn english in two or three months. Being bilingual is an advantage at so many levels.
