  • As we continue our series on Ichigo Kurosaki, we arrive at Ichigo's involvement in Fake Karakura. In this video, I break down Ichigo's experiences against Gin Ichimaru and Aizen Sosuke while also giving my take on controversial topics such as Aizen's lack of personal rifts with Ichigo and The highly controversial Final Getsugatenshou Technique.

    This is Ichigo taking on the burdens of the worlds in order to save them, given his youth it's no wonder he's just burned out but ready to beat Aizen. His lack of a grudge was made obvious by his statement of Aizen just being alone even with his power and god tier ego. That makes Ichigo all the more realistic, powerful yet flawed and vulnerable hero, yet still a hero nonetheless while most everyone else just values power for it's own sake.

    This matches my thoughts almost exactly. I've seen several people talk about this moment, but not one actually talks about the implications it has for ichigo, considering how empty his face is through the whole ordeal. Especially how he's gone from ignoring the responsibility of protecting Karakura at the start of the story, to taking on the responsibility of three realms.
    I will have to disagree with the final gestuga tensho coming out of nowhere though. It could have been handled better, but him losing his powers just seems like the logical next step in his character progression it's hard to imagine the FGT wasn't always planned in some shape/form, or at least him losing his power.

    • @TimeIguess
      @TimeIguess 2 года назад +37

      Yeah I think It was heavily built up that Ichigo didn't want responsibility and so him losing his powers after fulfilling his "final" responsibility makes perfect sense to me. Also is it really that surprising that there is a technique to fuse with your zanpakuto in bleach? If you actually think about the power system and how the zanpakuto is another being that is in your soul it makes complete sense you could fuse with them.

  • @ChadKakashi

    About Final Getsuga Tensho coming out of nowhere: Uryu showed a Power-Suicide type technique in the Soul Society arc. I never thought it came out of nowhere. It also had a huge cost which further counteracts the it “coming out of nowhere”.

    Another great one! I think a lot of people forget that the entire Hueco Mundo arc and Fake Karakura Town arc happen within the span of 24-48 hours. Ichigo's barely had any time to process everything that happened, and it's why his mental state continues to decline so harshly.
    I also want to mention that Ichigo letting go of his sword and getting stabbed by Zangetsu is a direct contrast to the Vizard training where he takes back his sword and stabs Zangetsu. In one, he clings to his power and forces his Zanpakuto into submission with a show of strength. In the other, he lets go of his weapon and shows an understanding of his Zanpakuto instead. I love how Kubo shows this progress. You're never outright told it, but it's so obvious in hindsight.
    Another comment mentioned that Dangai Ichigo might be a representation of enlightenment. I kinda agree with both your interpretations (which is another great thing about Bleach: that so many scenes have a variety of ways to look at them). Enlightenment in Buddhism is when you accept the truth of life: that everyone suffers and dies, and stop fighting it. Dangai Ichigo is definitely suffering, but he accepts it as a necessity and doesn't resist losing his powers, which is why he's enlightened. But once he starts having to live with the consequences, all the pain and suffering he'd tried to avoid processing hits him full force. But I think that's a topic to be brought up in the Fullbring video, which I am extremely excited for.
    Again, thank you so much for doing this series.

  • @ayusshanubhav2097

    It's weird but I completely disagree with this interpretation of ichigo & I think this is due to the cultural difference between east and west. I see dangai ichigo as a transcended soul rather than tortured/sad soul and the reason is that I believe the power system of Bleach is based on the idea of transcendence. It is achieved when you establish a non-dual understanding within yourself (what I'm trying to say is complicated but briefly it is when you see things just the way they are). This happens to ichigo during the fight with zangetsu, he reads the loneliness emanating from zangetsu's blade and then he lets go of his sword (symbolising him letting go of all resistance, and prejudices toward zangetsu) and gets stabbed ( this symbolises the immediate acceptance of zangetsu which happens by default when you let go of all prejudices) and hence ichigo establishes this non-dual understanding (because as he let go of all prejudices he now sees things just the way they are). I hope I was able to convey what I was trying to tell. So if you this way the final getsuga tenshou is not really a blunder but just Kubo using his power system.
    Man, I just love the DEICIDE arc, it's peak eastern storytelling.

    • @luisz0339
      @luisz0339 2 года назад +30

      I thought the way to archive true peace (in eastern culture) was to let go of the self or something like that. Is this what non-dual understanding is?

    • @adverseresolve8142
      @adverseresolve8142 2 года назад +23

      Could be both actually. There are multiple methods of doing so. Hell look at Aisen by the end of the arc, he wasn't fulfilled either. Plus Ichigo was forced to in The FKT arc rather reaching it at his own natural pace in TYBW. But I digress

    • @ayusshanubhav2097
      @ayusshanubhav2097 2 года назад +15

      @@luisz0339 Partly yes. Non-dual understanding is when you observe without superimposing any name and form or simply you can look at things just the way they are (I.e. without imposing any image, or impression that you have created). So letting go of self is the same as you are letting go of your conditioning so that you can observe without any superimposing. Ichigo gets this insight during the TYBW arc.

      @ricremricrem2221 2 года назад +2

      Yeah this is what I've been thinking for a while. I also think that to some extent Ichigo is suffering in his own transcendence as he is 1. taking on the full responsibility of saving the world and 2. about to loose the very thing that allows him to protect those around him 3. this state was kinda forced onto him via the circumstances he found himself in.

    • @jocoolshow
      @jocoolshow 2 года назад +9

      That's Fullbring/Complete FB Ichigo. Power scale wise, Ginjo and Tsukishima said that he was as strong as or stronger than he was as a Shinigami in FKT. So he was as strong as he was before.
      Narratively speaking, it was his answer to what he has been building up to in the beginning. The power to protect his friends and loved ones which he got back in full, only to get thrown into despair and get it taken from him by the one he saw as his only friend and ally
      And then him gaining the Shinigami Powers on top of it was a brighter ray of hope
      Side note, I wished they touched on how Ichigo felt about getting his powers back in _1the form of FB but not having Quincy or Hollow Zangetsu back, or what it was like to have them back when he got his powers again. It's not like the development he had with them when he got his Dangai power (which was really just 3 months of training + understanding his zan ) so all that development shouldn't be lost. Wish that was touched on since his Zan spirits were the source of his Shinigami and Hollows powers. Suddenly having powers back without them must be strange, especially post Dangai

    For me, the final getsuga tenshou made sense. Since zangetsu's power is to collect reiatsu into itself and release it in a dense form, secondly, the more in-sync a shinigami is with their sword, the further along they are as one, as ichigo's right arm is then fused with zangetsu which aizen comments about as well. This brings me to the conclusion I reached, the final getsuga tenshou as ichigo said, is him becoming getsuga itself, him merging completely with zangetsu and gathering all the reiatsu he had and releasing it in a single strike, that being mugetsu. So it makes sense to me as, ichigo now understood zangetsu better than ever before and accepted it as it pierced him and similar to bankai, he fused further along with zangetsu than before.

  • @ultimateshadeofwar

    I have a different look to the final getsuga tensho, probably more common, but i don't think he was just sad, i take it more like he knew already how this would play out, i don't think of him as just a torture man, but a man that gave up. Not on living, not on protecting his friends, on his ability to protect others. So because of that, he is so sad, he does smile a bit, in fact, he smile when he feels that Yuzu and Karin weren't hurt, that his friends are alive. Why? Because he has not fail on his last time as a protector. He takes his time to see how far he can push Aizen to see if he can understand his last enemy that is a threat to his love ones, so he can say that, he protected his loved one like he meant it on his final battle. It's why in my opinion he looks so shocked when he begins to lose his powers and Aizen is standing up showing him he is still growing strong and looks frustraded while Aizen gives his last speech before the sealing process beings. He failed, it wasn't until the kido kick on, that he relaxed, but he still couldn't look at Aizen, probably because he was just sad of who Aizen truly was, not the image he puts for everyone, or argues with Kisuke, but of the lonely man, put in a lone seal, where he may not be able to intereact with anyone anymore, and not find a true friend. Finally before his powers being to go away he see's his friends one last time, and smile before the effects to kick in full force.
    So yeah, i don't see a torture soul, i see the soul of a man that has giving up, because he gave everything to achive just one more thing. And in my opinion, that's worse then a torture soul, because a torture soul can recover with time and effort, but the soul of a man who has giving up, it will just go through the motions for the rest of his life, unless it's given hope.

    Amazing video! I just want to add one thing. As you said Ichigo is ultimate protector. By sacrificing his powers he not only gives up the thing that made him special, but he also gives up his means to protect his loved ones and that makes this whole thing so much more sad :(. Protecting people he cares about is the most important thing in the world for ichigo and after final Getsuga Tenshou he won't be able to do that, so this is just the beginning of the true torture our boy has to endure. In the very next arc we see how much it pains Ichigo to be powerless, unable to stand with his friends when they are in danger. That's when his character hits the lowest point of his life.

      OMG Gigi! You literally took my thoughts and perfectly worded them😅. P.s: I know my comment is a repeat of what you just said but I just had to reiterate 😅.
      I've always seen Ichigo as being someone who just wants to protect those he cares for. In the fullbring arc( I think episode 362 or 363) when he looses his powers and just breakdown, is a really good illustration of this. I believe he was broken because he lost the only avenue he thought he could use to get his powers back in order to keep protecting those he cares for but at the same time he realises he's loved ones no longer remember him, effectively taking away the one thing he's always fought to protect...that part was by far the saddest in my opinion. It brought me to tears.

    i always saw mugetsu as imperfect version of shukei hakuteiken, a very powerful final attack.
    but looking at it like a form or maybe a ''stage'' of his bankai does make it more interesting.
    i might be weird for thinking like this, but after seeing your video on soul society ichigo, i feel like shukei hakuteiken might have been a bit of a foreshadowing, not to mugetsu itself, but to the type of ''form'' / ''stage'' that mugetsu is. the true power of a soul reaper and zanpakuto in perfect union.
    and the reason ichigo has to pay the price of, all of his power, while byakuya didn't, is because byakuya had who-knows-how-many years to train with senbonzakura and got to this ''stage'' organically. while ichigo forced it prematurely.

    10:01 I also feel that Isshin knows just how guilty Ichigo feels about his mother and not being able to protect her and still blames him self. And now if Ichigo doesn't do something to save all his friends from Aizen, when he does have the power to do something he'll end up guilting himself over losing them like he did his mother and Isshin doesn't want that on his son.

    About what you said in the end about ichigo not having personal beef with Aizen : Ichigo did not have personal beef with aizen, but EVERYONE ELSE did. This is shown during the fight in the fake karakura when they all take turns facing aizen. I think it just serves your point even more about how unfair this whole situation is for ichigo, on top of saving the world, he's lowkey everyone's instrument for vengeance.

  • @AnUtterMesh

    Beautifully put. All Ichigo wanted to do was live his life and protect his friends and family when he can. Not be forced to save the whole world and sacrifice his whole future as a result. From episode 1 his powers were a manifestation of his will to protect others and he is quite tortured here because he knows he will lose it all.
    As far as the philosophical implications on enlightenment and transcendence people are counter arguing with. They are true but to attain that one has to sacrifice the connections to others in order to do so. A lot of mythological stories tell us this quite well. It's why Aizen is so lonely. He thought that by getting to the level he was at and if he kept going higher he will find fulfillment. But the hole in his heart only got larger as he let his intellect and logic drive him to forgoe the love of life that is required to heal from loneliness.

    I feel more relatability to Ichigo than most shonen protagonists. He wasn’t just going through a emo phase. He was realizing the depth and weight of the situation very immensely. His over all perception grew with each encounter with his friends, allies, and enemies. At first I didn’t realize the point in seeing his family and friends in the fake town but thinking back that’s all what Ichigo was really concerned about. He wanted to live and become stronger to protect his sister in the first chapter and that’s how he broke Rukia’s seal. Mind you he didn’t have his powers until she ran her blade into him but he still overcame something he didn’t even know about to save his sister. He knew his purpose and always felt it even before. In many ways he felt his adult hood even before Highschool and him being able to see spirits and interact with him was a huge sign that he was capable of so much. Even with those who argue that he was given so much with powers and abilities he only could manifest what he worked for. Seeing all his friends and family in that town suffering gave him his personal mission to save them at all costs. He didn’t even know how after his first move was foiled but he knew that he had to do something. Dangai Ichigo was burdened but he was more realistic than any version of Ichigo until this point. He knew at this point of no return that this is why I became a substitute soul reaper. To protect those that can’t defend themselves.

    A few friends and I have been writing a story for years. Lots of fun and because we've done it for so long we really got to tweak things.
    My main dude suffers a lot throughout.
    Theres a whole thing with beings referred to as Guardians. Its part of the story's creation myth. Time, Life, and Space. My guy end up selected for the role of Guardian of Space.
    Dude manipulates matter at his final form, but just as the powers were passed down so was the defense and maintenance of reality itself.
    Long story short one all 3 hit peak reality starts to collapse forcing the 3 to hold it back while creating a new plane for life to carry on.
    The Price?
    They are left behind. They are forced to exist within a plane of nothing and are constantly under the strain of their abilities holding that new world together.
    For Eternity. He has to lose his wife, twin children, and almost everyone he held dear that was still alive.
    He watches them carry on, without remembering him.
    The 3 Guardians are forgotten as if they never existed, trapped alone, never being permitted rest.

    Honestly the final getsuga might have been set up to happen if not foreshadowed. Think about it. Aizen's whole theme revolved around transcendence. Surpassing hollows and soul reapers and eventually challenge the soul king. Aizen wanted to challenge himself with the soul king so he focused his research on surpassing his own limitations which is his soul genes. Aizen maxed out his abilities but he felt he could surpass his capabilities if he were to modify his soul. In this case, hougyouku enabled that possibility.
    If Aizen was going to end up surpassing everyone. Then Ichigo would have to as well. His theme revolved around transcendence so Ichigo would have to defeat him in 2 ways. Exploit Aizens abilities and seal him away (that is what Urahara did) or let Ichigo become as strong as Aizen and kill Aizen. Although of course Aizen couldn't die. Aizens ability was to evolve and overcome any possibility of death. If Gins bankaj didn't kill Aizen then i doubt there would be another solution.
    So overall Kubo could simply let Aizen not have these random power ups if Kubo knew Ichigo would have to transcend Aizen to this level. But Kubo wanted to demonstrate the theme of transcendence in Bleach in my opinion. Though ofc as you mentioned Ichigo forced synergy with his zanpakuto and gained this power which is Ichigos true potential. Ichigo always had latent potential. Ichigos potential is the reason why he was one of the great war powers in the last arc. So kubo brought out his latent potential in the dangai.

    Yeah, a lot of people hate deconstructing protagonist, but to me that's not enough. Deconstruction is not enough, there are authors that stop there, i enjoy the process of deconstruction only, if it's follow by the process of reconstruction, because that, failing realizing what that means and rebuild yourself to face that problem, that's realistic, it may take time, it may not inmediate, but it's part of the process of deconstruction and reconstruction, of growing up... And that's why Ichigo is excellent, like you are showing through this series of videos, he is deconstructed and reconstructed multiple times, each time is done well and with good reason.

    The only problem I have with Ichigo is that he never fully uses his full power or knows how to use his full power. If he did, he would have wrecked everyone. This is proven how White always wins when he comes out to protect Ichigo.
    Also, agreed with your entire video, the analysis of Ichigo. He was depressed as Dangai Ichigo. It was also known when Ichigo got his powers back, fullbringer, only to lose them. Still glad that the Court Guard 13 decided to give their power to restore Ichigo's power.

    That was likely the lowest moment of his life up til that point. The weight of the world was forced upon him, to be a saviour reluctantly when he'd already achieved what he set out for. Without his intervention, everything was doomed, and Ichigo couldn't let that happen. But that didn't motivate him to do it with a smile on his face, no, it was overwhelming and crushing. He watched people like Kisuke and even his own father fail to stop Aizen, and now he's told the only way to proceed and win is to give up the power to protect people. Every attack before Mugetsu he was probably hoping, that this was it. This is the attack that will end it. So he didn't have to give up everything.

    Mugetsu is called moonless night in my view because it means zangetsu was successful and able to slash/behead the moon. That’s one of the meanings for it. The other being that the moon is his powers and now until the full bring arc he lives a “moonless night”.

    • @mr.chaosvicious5968
      @mr.chaosvicious5968 2 года назад

      Correct me if I'm wrong here. But doesn't the name "Zangetsu" translate to something like "Slaying Moon?" And if Mugetsu is supposed to mean "Moonless Night." Then it seems to potentially mean that the Moonless part in Mugetsu,could actually mean an absence of Zangetsu himself when you consider both of those things. Seeing as how Ichigo using the skill would and did ultimately cost him all of his powers as a Soul Reaper. And no Soul Reaper powers results in there being no Zangetsu,meaning that there really isn't a moon anymore. Or at least there isn't for Ichigo anyway,not until he finally regains his former powers at the end of the Full Bring Arc.

    I think the pacing getting here was a subtle stroke of genius. Dragging the stuff with Aizen out, and making things look as bleak to the reader as they did to the kids from Karakura, with Ulquiorra's intense, maladaptive nihilism leading the charge to set a tone for Hueco Mundo and Grimmjow's instinct-driven brutality and relentless hunger giving a dark mirror to what Ichigo and White could become, all while the actual threat is well out of reach. Hitsugaya's 'let us be your anger' comment and Aizen's 'if you're going to kill me, you have to hate me' serves the setup perfectly. The Captains, for all their wrath (Hitsugaya especially) are undone. Ulquiorra breaks before that aspect of Ichigo that speaks to Grimmjow's relentless hunger (and the *fear of loss* underneath that), and Grimmjow gets knocked out by someone who consciously decides he can lose everything but what's behind him, which has been the ruin of many a tiger. Gin Ichimaru further sets us up by displaying a calculated, cold kind of personal vendetta played out over centuries, chiding Ichigo's lack of conviction... He falters too. Because that's not how you kill a god.
    When we reach Aizen with Ichigo, he's winnowed his intent down to the conviction of what he's willing to die for, who he's willing to kill for, where he'll make his stand. This is not great for his long term health, and Zangetsu is violently against it for good reason, as is made plain in the Fullbring Arc, but in the moment, it makes him perfectly suited to fighting someone who has little concept of being defeated or dying, looks down on everyone around him and has to be told, patiently, that he's not the one shaking the mountains and cracking the earth.
    True Zangetsu Ichigo is definitely a healthier person, though... Someone who could match Dangai Ichigo pound for pound, but built up to it instead of being tortured into shape for it.

    The price for Super Saiyan was that in order to overcome Frieza, the level of anger and loss needed to feel extreme. In that moment Goku failed to protect his friend. Sure the Dragonballs are there but people keep forgetting they have to WIN the battle first before talking of Dragonballs can be a thing. He almost lost his life trying to beat the crap out of Frieza to prove a point! Irrational thinking and pride came into play there.

    back when i was watching this episode of dangai ichigo vs aizen when the episode actually aired, i thought and wanted to believe that final getsuga tenshou is a transformative new form of his bankai where ichigo gets new move sets Mugetsu being one of those moves. this is because i had seen till now many different shinigammis using multiple techniques with their zanpakuto but ichigo only had his one and only getsuga tenshou, so i was like, "this new form looks sick and it seems ichigo can unleash new moves like mugetsu in this form"

  • @oblivion2061
    @oblivion2061 2 года назад

    Amazing take, very close to my own thoughts of about dangai ichigo as a character, I would argue however the sadness displayed by Ichigo mostly came from his fusion with zangetsu when he accepted the blade into his heart he also accepted zangetsu/whights feelings into himself as well as their spirits evidenced by his fusion with is zanpakto. In that state known as Dangai Ichigo i believe he is both ichigo and zangetsu/whight as one, a transceded being no longer ichigo or zangetsu (human, soulreaper, hollow or quincy) but something else entirely. This is why Aizen is unable to sense his reitsu as he himself stated Ichigo had perhaps transcended to a dimension above his own even before going final getsuga tenshou which most likely transcended him to an even greater dimension of power. Hence the necessity of the sacrifice of his reitsu and ultimately his powers for such a broken power up. You’re take on his conflict and tortured soul is spot on though it also explains why ichigo couldn’t kill aizen with his final getsuga tenshou he didn’t have the unwavering resolve go all out in his attack and sacrificing all his reiatsu at once implying his attack could have been wayyyyy stronger and it also explains how he was still able to keep using his soul reaper powers after for a limit number of times since he held on to some of that reiatsu.

    Perfect video man, another great one, made perfect sense, the Jesus comparison was perfect!!! It literally would be the same as Christ fighting Lucifer for the souls of humanity having no sins of his own to pay for, wouldn’t be his responsibility or his fight or sacrifice. Like ichigo saving the arancars he really didn’t want to kill, christ said forgive them they know not what they do. Good content as always. Maybe the final move wasn’t planned but I do believe the loss of ichigo’s powers was planned way ahead of time as how flushed out his character was and the noticeable personality differences when he emerged a second time to fight. Great stuff, you always get me thinking.

    Get dissection of the events. I'd like to include some potential add ons to it.
    I believe that Gin knew he was going to fail so he took the roll of Ichigo's teacher to push him into understanding the situation while giving Ichigo a gauge as to the strength he would need.
    And as for Final Getsuga event where people complained that it came out of nowhere. When we saw that Ishin's power was Dormant for Ichigo's life I always saw it as him understanding the cost and benefit, but with Everything But The Rain, where we figure out how he lost his strength. I always saw it as foreshadowing for the Final and the story of Ichigo's lineage.
