You can try cheap/free ways to replicate drywall texture using joint compound patch and a sponge/rag, but really the best DIY results will be to buy a $9-10 can of aerosol texture/orange peel spray. How does it work? Jump to 04:12 in the video: You'll want to practice first, but after "warming it up" in hot water or on heater vent, set the dial to fine or course and in continuous motions "sweep" back and forth. Many reviews say this stuff clogs after 1 time use. True, but NOT if you turn can upside down and clear the nozzle! Works like new every time. Hope this videos helps!
