How to match orange peel texture- Using a can of Homax orange peel texture on a drywall repair

  • In this short video clip I'm demonstrating how to spray a can of Homax's oil base orange peel texture on an actual drywall repair where installed a Big Screen Plasma TV.
**Be sure to shake the can well before trying to spray the orange peel texture!
I'm spraying the orange peel texture on some drywall that I installed after installing some wood framing to support the Big Screen Plasma TV
The area that needs the orange peel sprayed has a medium orange peel that I need to match. I'll be spraying this entire area with just one can of the Pro Grade Homax Orange Peel Texture.
All i can say is cover everything that you don't want texture to get on in the surrounding area around the repair that you're going to be spraying the texture on.
*Caution*- Always wear safety glasses and a respirator whenever spraying the can of oil base texture. Try and ventilate room by opening windows and doors.

I do the same as a DYI'er. I tried the water base it takes forever to dry, flattens out too easily when priming, and has more filler than texture. Oil base rocks but use protective gear as mentioned. Gotta prime it no matter what. Good tips and demo dude!

Agreed. The oil-based performs significantly better. Fewer air bubbles and more consistent application. The fumes it expels are awful, but still worth it.

@@b.a.1854 I left it for a day to dry, maybe even more, it it just didn’t work as well. I tried several cans and was stoked to use a water base product but it just didn’t work that well as I mentioned in the comments. The oil is harsh with fumes but it works really well and I’ve stuck with using oil base exclusively.

I'm glad I watched your video because I was going to buy the water-based, but based on your expertise, I'm going to buy oil instead. Also the advice using 6" knife to smooth it out was fantastic!

What would you suggest when replacing new (green) 1/2" drywall up to a piece of textured drywall? Its in a bathroom and If I hang horizontally, I can make a butt edge on both sides to the old textured wall. The edge on the ceiling will be tapered to the flat edge of the textured ceiling, I would use paintable caulk for the inside joint on the walls, sand down the ceiling as much as possible and mud/tape the inside edge and try to blend orange peel with this homax spray. Or should I do it the other way around hanging vertically and tape/mud the corners and caulk to the ceiling. Or just tape/mud everything? I know its not going to look perfect trying to tape/mud the new drywall to the old textured drywall but I can't find the best way to accomplish this without replacing all the drywall in the bathroom.

Hi Ruk, yes sandpaper or sanding sponge will work too. But just like with the drywall knife you need to have a light touch while knocking off the top of the orange peel. I've done it both ways and if there's a High spot or a bump it's going to take the texture off while you were using sandpaper or drywall taping knife. I appreciate the comment. Take care, -Paul

It looks great when I spray, then come back the next day and it really lost alot of it's texture. Tips for that? Again, I did use the water based stuff as thats all I had so maybe thats the issue. I often have the problem of the spray can texture not flattening out as much as the original and looking like it needs a shave. That texture you did looked a bit sparse. Were you 100% satisfied with the match to the existing?

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  6 лет назад +4

+Mike Richter I hear you Mike. No I'm not 100% satisfied with the outcome from the spray can of texture. The plus is it can blended in well and is easy for a DIYer to use. I think I could've gotten a lot closer to matching that texture by using my hopper and thinning down joint compound. But since this was an area at my own house, I wanted to try to match the orange peel texture with spray can texture and get it on video for all the DIYers searching on RUclips. I think the texture in a can is much easier for a DIYer to match an orange peel texture than trying to gather a compressor, hopper and get the joint compound mixed to the right consistency to match an existing orange peel texture on a drywall repair. On a sidenote I had a contractor friend over and told him that I had redrywalled and textured the wall behind the plasma TV. He said "Oh wow I Would have never known anything had been done..." Take care man, -Paul

But oil based is not good when using water based paint also when applying the texture 3 minutes after the texture was applied being it's semi soft yet it can be lightly smoothed out without using much pressure at a 45° angle with a putty knife to match existing knockdown texture on wall rather then scraping it off when it's hard though depending on existing texture itself.

Also. never do a sample for the customer. Just do it and then paint it. Never even mention there's such a thing as drywall texture. Once they get focused on something, they'll pick it apart and you'll have to redo it seven times. If you don't bring it up, and only ask them questions like what color do you want. it will never enter their mushy noggins. They want control.. of any kind.. Never give it to them. Just let them make basic decisions that won't trip you up. They have no idea what they're talking about.

I need help if you’re still active , I’m remodeling my house as I just purchased it , however I’m redoing the dry wall in some rooms and I purchased water based paints , and water based wall texture, the guys at sherwin Williams told me “if your paint is water based, oil based wall texture will not work” anyways I see that you don’t like water based wall texture, do you think I’ll be fine, or should I return , because I purchased about 5, 5 gallon buckets of paint , and 5 boxes (6 pack) or wall texture , and this was very expensive , each can was about $18 and I purchased 30 cans

@Michael Erving Just because Paul doesn't personally like water based texture doesn't mean you have to change your remodeling game plan. I've recently used Homax water based wall texture for my home and achieved great results (knockdown texture.) The guys at Sherwin are right, if you're using a water based paint then stick to water based texture. I'm making the assumption the paint that you purchased is primer mixed. Typically with oil based materials you have to do a primer only coat and let it dry before applying paint. When you use the water based primer mixed paint, then you eliminate that extra step (on naked or same based surfaces.) Helpful tip* Save all your receipts because you can always return what you don't use. (except custom paint etc.) Hope this helps from also from another New Homeowner.

Cuong Dennison thank you for the knowledge, I’m going back today to talk to them about primer , the paint they sold it is a ProMar 200 paint , they also sold me Shellac based primer to use with water based paint and texture , man in know way am I rich but just on the paint, texture, and supplies for dry wall etc. I spent like $2500 , and that’s not even everything I need from them 😔

@@michaelerving9146 That's really expensive 😳 I went to Lowes for our paint and home depot for supplies (masking tape, hand masker, drop cloth etc.) They sell high quality paint with primer there with all the different types of sheen you need, even Sherwin Williams paint. We planned on painting the entire interior of my house excluding the ceilings so I pulled the trigger on a Graco LTS 15 airless paint sprayer with 24" extension.. 15 gallons of (Valspar Ultra Satin), 5 gallons (Valspar Signature Semi-gloss) for a total of 20 gallons, all supplies, texture, paint brushes, including the Graco Airless Paint Sprayer for ~$1400. Idk how big your project is, but my home is 1,500sqft with vaulted ceilings (big walls) and we have a couple gallons of paint leftover. It's also nice to know that you can always return your non-used wall texture. 😁

Cuong Dennison so in my town we only have Home Depot for paint , and sherwin Williams , every “professional painter” has told me that Home Depot paint is not the way to go , and basically they explained to be that primer mixed with paint is a gimmick, even at sherwin they told me primer mixed with paint isn’t really even a good thing , and to basically just purchase primer alone , and I feel ripped off, I’m redoing 2 restrooms (toilet, vanity , sink, tile , covering tub to shower) and basically repainting the whole , and repaint all the drywall (that needs repairs) the house was not treated proper at all , I think these people before me would fight a lot and we’re in general angry people

@@michaelerving9146 No doubt Sherwin Williams carries some of the top of the line paints, but I'm convinced with the paint that other stores sell like Home Depot and Lowes. I even Googled "the best interior paints" and 4/5 "best interior" paints are sold at Home Depot and Lowes for a fraction of the cost. The results came out with excellent quality and so of course every "professional painter" is going to suggest Sherwin. If you want to check out how the paint primer mix came out, I could email you the pics. We also did both of our bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, 5 closets, living room, 2 dining rooms, laundry room, and kitchen. With the amount you're probably going to spend on "professional" materials and paints you could use that money on a airless paint sprayer instead of rolling the whole thing. Note* I'm going to use the airless sprayer on my backyard wooden fence etc.

I bought a can of the Homax texture spray, but I haven’t used it yet; the cancer warning on the back scared me.

Your holding the can at to much of an angle rather than straight at the wall. The texture ends up looking long and like it was sprayed sideways instead of straight at the wall. And it does make a Big difference in the appearance sorry just facts
