I'm a homeowner and continue to refer to this video when applying orange peel. I have a lot of areas in our house that have needed fixing and some are fine and some are heavy so matching it is challenging. This vid does it for me. Thanks
Your advice on this video helped me to get the job done right! Thank you very much!!
I used to give my wife a break every weekend and make breakfast for the kids. Mostly waffles or pancakes. When you said to make the mud the same consistency, it was easy to do so. I kept mixing and adding a little water at a time until it was just right. It was my first time using a hopper but your video was a great guide and I am pleased with the result.
I heard you have not been feeling great. I hope that you start to feel better soon. Take care and God bless.
Thank you for being very detailed on all the settings and veriables. There are very few professionals like you put there and thanks again for explaining your craft.
Thanks, glad I could help you out 😎. And thanks for subscribing!
Thanks! Very informative. I've sprayed small areas of texture before, but after watching your vid, I'm feeling really comfortable doing a whole ceiling.
I am a diy homeowner and have sprayed texture several times with inconsistent results. Your advice to adjust the pull of the trigger really changed the results of my textures. I found this information nowhere else. Thank you

Thank you for being part of my channel.
Thank you for this very informative video! Really helped me to understand how to achieve and/or to match different styles of texture with just basically properly controlling two knobs on a hopper gun. Excellent!
This was the best texture video I have found, all the variables covered. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I used this technique and worked great in matching the existing Orange Peal I had. Thanks for the video!
Glad to help
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! Definitely the most helpful drywall spray texture video I've seen
#DOITRIGHT
I have been doing home renovations for about 5 years and the investors I work with typically want the houses skip troweled so my experience with orange peel applications have been minimal. I've always bought those $19 cans that don't work have the time. I've thrown away hundreds of dollars on those cans. I finally bought a Wagner texture spayey yesterday. Hoping to put it to work on Monday. This is the most helpful video I have found. Thank you. You earned another subscriber!
Thanks, I appreciate that 😎, I love hearing your comments, & Glad you’ve subscribed!
I love your straight ahead explanation of the details. Glad to find and subscribe to your channel!
Thanks!
I think that was very well explained and filmed so thank you for that! I have more of a fine to medium fine orange peal I need to try and match. I think I'll buy that cheap gun and give it a try.
Just watch this again before starting if needed and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. 😎
Than you I learned so much from your previous video and now this I am remodeling my house by myself and it’s hard and 🤩 fun .
You rock, all your videos are helping me learn how to do all this, thanks!!!!
Thank you for your very helpful videos. You I feel are a natural teacher. Your coverage of the instructions are superb.😃
Thanks, glad I could help you out 😎. And thanks for subscribing!
Appreciate the video. Asked a question on the knockdown video but think you answered it here. Great channel. Appreciate you!
Glad to help!
GREAT video! Thank you for sharing!
That was great. A texture video that explained the art rather than just say aim at wall and spray like the rest. Not bad for a Fly Boy, thats coming from a Navy Submariner Squid! Good job brother!
Ever Forward well you know, us flyboys like to Aim High! Thanks for your service my friend.
Great information. Thank you for sharing!
⭐HEY, I just now released an ebook about How to Spray a Knockdown texture that could be really helpful to you. It takes my whole video even further with things like photos showing how a medium knockdown should look when sprayed, and when knocked down. It lists the tools and supplies needed, how to mix the texture, how to adjust the sprayer in more detail, and so much more. Check it out and I think you'll find it very helpful if you plan to do this texture. Here's the link to it in my Etsy store. www.etsy.com/listing/969964231/how-to-spray-knockdown-texture-ebook?ref=shop_home_active_1
I'll be releasing one specifically for spraying Orange Peel texture as well, and may do a combined version also.
Thanks for the great how to!!!
Great video. I have this very same texture spray unit and have used it several times now and I like it too. Super easy to use. Pretty fool proof, just do like you say, a few spray tests to get it where you want and get to it.
Thanks for sharing!
Very comprehensive. Thank you.
Thanks this was very informative. I was struggling at figuring out how to do this very light orange 🍊 pill without using a can of texture. My basement walls look great thanks for the lesson. Thanks for your service.
Glad it was helpful!
I've been researching orange peel for a project, that was a good instructional vid!

My daughter's bathroom walls are so bad and I feel like this is the best option. I'm just scared to try it myself . Lol good thing I have some scrap drywall I can practice on first.
Hi K-Guy
Thanks alot for the tip on having a small air valve on the hopper gun to control the air. I was having trouble with my small pancake compressor keeping up with the demand and that dolved it. Works perfect. Thanks again.
...solved it.
Thank you from a DIY and landlord. You have taught me a lot

Great video my friend
Thank you sr appreciate the time to showing this skills
Thanks, I appreciate that 😎, & Thanks for subscribing!
Great video ! Thanks
Thank you!
I really appreciate the technical details... trade secrets if you will. Thank you, brother. Only critique - wish I saw a close-up of the three textures at the end of this video.
I am a retired plasterer. I find your videos to be good and sound information. Just had to say so.
Thanks I appreciate that
thank you sir .... great video
Thank you again for an informative video
Our pleasure!
idk if its been said before but in another video a guy was using a piece of a side garage door seal for knockdown. its the one with the squarish side that nails to the grage door buck and the super thin side that seals on the door. it looks like the thin flappy part is really soft and makes it forgiving when using for knockdown
The one I showed in this video is very forgiving.
ruclips.net/video/hjSf3TFO4HE/видео.html
Great demo. I’ve got a remodeled hallway in my home so my new drywall buts up to old drywall in a few corners. I was thinking of over spraying onto the old wall and maybe using a wet sponge to blend in the new texture. The house is 42 years old so the old orange peel is almost gone via all the layers of paint. Do you have a blending video you can point me to?
This one might help- ruclips.net/video/o3BaGtH6__E/видео.html
This video was super helpful. Thank you for making these types of videos.
Glad it was helpful! I also just released an ebook, Today, on my new Etsy store that takes this training even further and can be real helpful if you are going to tackle this. Check it out at: www.etsy.com/listing/969964231/how-to-spray-knockdown-texture-ebook?ref=shop_home_active_1
I'll be releasing one real soon that's specifically for spraying Orange Peel texture, but they are very similar.
Yes. Https://m.facebook.com/thatkiltedguy/
I can’t seem to approve your comment so let me know if you get this. I think it’s because you included your email in your comment
Yes, I got your text and I deleted my email
Very helpful! I just framed in an old doorway & hung the rock. I’m watching your videos to learn how to tape, bed & texture it the right way! I appreciate your videos!!
Amazing video. Thanks. I think I’ll try this over the spray cans. With the cans, I always have to use a putty knife to knock down when matching existing texture. It looks ok, but nothing like you did. Do you ever use a tool to blend or knock down using this method?
There's 2 types of sprayed on texture, this one, (orange peel) and knock down. For orange peel I *_Never_* use a tool on it after spraying, but for knockdown, always. Check out this video- ruclips.net/video/eKkDBGHCbJo/видео.html
Wall prep would be nice to know.
Love the texture in Florida we don’t have nobody in New Jersey doing it. Would love to pay someone to do my house
Thank you, this is super helpful! For areas of exposed drywall where I've used the sealant on brown paper do I need to put any mud over the brown paper before spraying the texture or can I just spray the texture directly onto the drywall once that sealant has dried? It's the sealant you recommended in another video, the name is just escaping me right now. This is in a bathroom so it's a mixture of the green board and the regular white board. Thank you for putting all of these videos together!

Great detail and practical video. Very good explanation of the variables that go into the various patterns. Thumbs up. Everything I wanted to know, now let's go make a mess.
OlTrailDog lol. You got this!
Hi Sir, thank you so much for all your help! Very detailed to explain, it helps me a lot! I’ll be doing a medium drywall ceiling repair next week and I want to buy a decent air compressor to keep for future jobs too, what do you recommend? I’m not sure if the California will have enough CFM to apply texture... Help me please :)
The compressor in my link is the same one I use. If you don’t run the air wide-open constantly it keeps up for smaller jobs just fine. I’ve been using it for about three years. Or you could go to the next size up. But that brand is lighter and much quieter.
For a quiet compressor- amzn.to/2UnMtUg
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Awesome, thank you so much once again!
Last question 😁 A good hose that you recommend me?
In regards to coverage for orange peel. Is there supposed to be a complete layer of texture covering the board or will there be small gaps of the actual board showing through? Also, when you say you go over it in 2 or 3 passes, is that all in one session, or do you let it setup and then do additional passes over it? Thanks, great videos and knowledge you have.
Hey, coverage can be 100% or way less. You create the look you want, and it's all done in one session with no setup time and additional passes. Just like in this video.
Applying drywall compound requires several different passes and then between it must dry. Sometimes, sanding as needed if there are too many rough spots. Indentations can be covered with more Compound. The idea is to cover the seams and the wall with an even layer of compound So that it looks like one solid surface
Thanks for the explanation of the variables. Wish the Sheetrock background had been a more contrasting color... kinda hard to see on the small screen. But the info was great - thanks again!
I did paint it green to help. Sorry.

Thank you teacher.
Iam in Kenya, how can I get this texture spray gun please.
EXCELLENT VIDEO..👍.Would you recommend texturing over primer or straight on the drywall and then primer..? If you can give me your professional suggestion, it will be great. Thanks
You can texture straight over raw drywall. But it's not a bad idea to prime first, but most pros don't. DO prime after texturing though.
I only prime first on light textures. It really helps you find imperfections you might not have seen.
Does it matter wether the drywall is painted and primed before doing the texturing, what would you recommend?
Priming before texture is a good idea but most new construction doesn’t do it, so it’s not required
I would like to add texture to my walls. They are painted, but do not have any texture currently. How would you recommend to start? Do I need to do anything to the wall before I start spraying the texture? Thank you!
Scuff sand the walls with 80 grit before texture
This is Gonzalo from Argentina.
Thank you for the video!
Any advice, working with GFRC, using this tool for the face coat, what configuration you recommend (air nozzle size, air pressure PSI, air flow, etc), in order to obtain a very soft surface without pinholes?
Than you very much!
I I have no experience with that, sorry
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY thank you anyway 😀
wow great video
im getting ready to spray texture on my ceiling, i removed the popcorn and i can see were the use joint compound to cover the joints, i sanded it down but still has alot of imperfections, what would be the best spray texture to use on the ceiling to cover all that up? i have the same gun u do. also do i have to paint it afterwards?
thank u
Actually, texture covers very little. Most defects will still show through a texture so it's best to fix them first. Here's a video to get you started on that- ruclips.net/video/J7zSqZhBHJo/видео.html
As for the best covering spray texture, knockdown is good, or a heavy orange peel. Not large drops, but smaller drops and just cover the wall about 98%. I'll show that one some day.
And yes, ALL raw drywall needs primed and then painted.
thank u very much
A heavy stomp, stomp knock down, or an imperfect smooth wall. Hide the most if thats what your asking?.
Can I use texture on lath & plaster
Hi..
I have a question please:
Do you sand after the texture is dry before painting?
Thanks.!
No that will make it look like tiny knockdown
I just applied orange peel to new walls and matched old orange peel on old walls. This video was extremely helpful!! Should I remove the tape and protective paper now while the orange peel is drying or wait until it's dried and put up new tape and paper for painting?
While wet is easier
What about the can of texture spray? Would you recommend that for small areas? And how do you match it to the existing texture?
I’ll be teaching detailed classes like this in my new www.DrywallAcademy.com so be sure to go sign up for free.
Hey bro! I use that same texture machine. I seen to have to replace it once a year. Are my guys just not taking cafe of it right? Or does that seem about normal?
None of the texture sprayers under $200 are really built that well and if you use them a lot they will wear out. But if they’re not cleaned and lubed regularly they will wear out faster. I’m going to review some texture sprayers soon that are faster, starting at $250 and going up to several thousand so be watching for that review.
Hey, thanks so much for commenting and for subscribing. With your help we can blast past 100,000 subscribers and more!
We have an orange peel ceiling, the cheep builders used nails instead of screws which are poppig up so now we have to fix it, our ceilings are a greyish white, do you think they were painted?
Hard to say
Greetings @ThatKiltedGuyDIY. Hope you are well. I just finished spraying a medium texture over a repair while trying to match the existing texture. After sufficient drying time I applied a coat of drywall primer. My repair texture appears a bit lighter than the existing texture. My question: Can I apply additional texture over this painted repair texture in an attempt to achieve a closer match. Thanks so much. I really appreciate your videos.
#doitright thanks for the teaching. very helpful
Thanks, glad I could help. And #doitright
Question for the board: When is the drywall primer applied ---- BEFORE texturing, or , AFTER texturing?? Thanks!!
After, or both as it helps the knockdown process go better that way
What do you suggest if you are not a good taper although been painting over 30 years...Thanks 🙏
What do I suggest about what? What texture to spray? What joint tape to use?
The USG orange peel video shows to prime the Sheetrock before applying orange peel. It appears that most contractors apply orange peel directly to Sheetrock before priming. What have you found to be the difference between the two techniques? I have several large sections (ex. 3’ x 6’) of patches walls to cover.
When I did new construction with my father, we never ever primed first. And it worked just fine. I think the main difference is if you’re doing knock down, you will get a longer, more even hold out and a more even knock down. But with orange peel, I don’t feel like it matters.
Would non-prime sheetrock absorb the moister from the mud quicker resulting in a slightly different look vs a primed surface when the moster has to evaporate ?
I have about a 8 foot long wall that needs texturing, would you recommend going this route or would the orange peel spray cans be an easier option?
Don’t believe these spray cans. An 8 foot wall would cost you a fortune. Use this hopper
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Yeah, that's what I was leaning towards too, thank you for the video and reply!
Will that texture hopper sprayer work if you're doing your ceilings or do you think it will get jammed?
It works perfectly fine on ceilings.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY thank you!
Would u need primer after texture application before painting ?
Watch this- ruclips.net/video/3_QSmuf0bVI/видео.html
Pride in workmanship is hard to find, cut and run is what I see, every time I try to hire a contractor
I worked in remodeling construction for the last 25 years, most of the drywall work I let my mexicans helpers to do, until now I realized why they could do it so much easier than myself...lol.
How good of a finish does the drywall need to be before spraying a light orange peel texture?
Flat joints, very minor defects, very minor edges.
i have a 1700 sq ft house i am going to retexture this week. I am worried my little 6 gallon pancake compressor won't keep up. its 2.7 cfm at 90 psi. Should I borrow/rent one or will i be okay with my little one?
With that CFM it will not keep up. It will work for 30 seconds to a minute and then you have to let it catch up so I advise renting or borrowing one with five to 7 CFM minimum
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY thank you for taking the time to reply! Means a lot. I will borrow one!
What size did you use, the small, medium, or large tip?
Medium but I can pretty large drops form a small and fairly fine from a large if you adjust the air flow and trigger pull right.
HI. I'm just curious how you deal with two different finishes. Say orange peel on the walls, but knock down on the ceiling. How to you keep them from contaminating each other? Thanks.
Masking if it’s dry or you spray the ceiling first, knock it down, then the wall and knock down the overspray on the ceiling
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY gotcha!! Thanks 😊
Can I use this spray tool with a 5 gallon 2.6 cmf pancake or do I need my large compressor?
Depends on if that's at 40 or 90 psi. Here's what I use and I get by, though it can run low on air if I spray too long at once. amzn.to/3scm3oe
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY So my little pancake compressor is 6 gallons, 2.6 cfm at 90 psi. Too small to spray texture. I used my 30 gallon air receiver connected to the pancake with the receiver regulator set at 35 psi. Textured two bathrooms without issue. Have learned so much watching your videos. I have never done drywall work before (other than making holes) and your videos brought me way up the learning curve.
Awesome. Glad to hear
Is it beneficial to paint the wall to the desired color first before spraying the texture to help with the final painting process, or is that a waste of time and money?
Texture first as it texture covers the wall, then prime & paint- so yes it would be a waste of time and money. Thank you for your input.
#DOITRIGHT 👊🏼✌🏼💪🏼👍🏼
Do I have to skim coat the entire ceiling before adding the texture?
Not if you finished all the joints correctly
Should I prime my wall before applying texture?
I never have, but it would give you a more consistent knockdown, and I believe it's recommended.
Lots of arguments about it from contractors from different areas. Net is that you don't have to but it if you don't it *might* telegraph more over taped areas as it will dry faster on those areas than on the drywall paper. If you are doing heavier texture I could see this being more of a problem as it might flatten out more on the paper and be more bumpy on the seams. But all of that is *might* and you will find plenty of people swearing to both positions with their "been a drywaller for XX years and never had a callback!"
Thank you sir for the video. I have the exact same Hopper. Your video helped so much. The only question I have is what kind of air compressor are you using? Are pancake air compressors sufficient?
Any compressor that puts out at least 3-4 cfm can work. Higher CFM is better.
I use this one- ruclips.net/video/GysQMOiM8Nc/видео.html
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thank you for the response. Today I sprayed orange peel in a kitchen with the exact same Hopper. I used the rigid 2.6 @ 35 psi. It worked good but the air compressor constantly ran. I learned a valuable lesson today with regards to mixing. I mixed a whole box of multipurpose and used like 10% wasted a whole box. I also should have watered the mudd better but it still spit. I realize now that I should have primered before hand as that would have made it easier to apply consistency. It looks good but patches and so forth made it hard to see. I also need to use better lighting next time.
I'm a handyman 10+ years but this was my first time doing it myself. Homeowners are happy.
What's your opinion on sanding orange peel? Sanding off high points and making small plateaus?
Does it matter the size of the air compressor?
What matters is that it’s capable of putting out 4 to 6 CFM at 40 psi. But the hopper can be a little different so look it up
Why don’t we have this in New Jersey. Tired of seeing the defects in tape n spackle jobs. I am Hvac guy. I don’t tape or spakle
Foid coloring in the mudd would have been great for video purposes as we can't really see it
That’s why I painted the sheet rock darker so it does stand out way better than if I hadn’t done that.
Good video....... show me the exact nozzle you used in this video..... he said about 35 pounds at the compressor going through a 50 foot hose what was your pressure at the gun any idea or just basically winging it....Thanks Dennis
Pressure isn’t that important. I control the air while spraying with an air valve at the gun and I’m adjusting the cfm more than the pressure.
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement .....ooooooook....I’ll practice on a test panel... thank you sir...Dennis
Have you ever heard of putting dishwash soap in with your taping mud to take out air bubbles?
Yes, and I don’t think it helps. I’ve tried it and I can’t tell if it makes any difference. I will be testing that one day soon
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Same here, I don’t think it helps either. I feel like if it’s mixed well enough with your mixer you shouldn’t have any air bubbles in it.
Have you used your hopper (after the mud is cleaned obviously haha) for painting at all and then back rolling?
I am thinking about trying that next time I paint .
I seriously doubt it would work well and I’d go with an 18” roller first
9’ ceiling in an 1800 sq ft house would take me 3 months to texture all the walls ?
lol
Your Amazon store link does not work.
Hey, thanks for that info. I just checked it and it worked for me, so might be a spam blocker, or something. Here's the actual store link0 bit.ly/GuysAmazonStore
Or did you click on a tool and that link didn't work? If so, which one? Thanks
Do you have to sand Orange Peel texture down after spraying it on with a hopper?
What would be the point of spraying it on
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I'm not talking about completely sanding it Off I'm talking about sending it lightly to take the roughness off
Orange peel is never sanded.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY wow really I've always sanded it because it feels really rough after I shoot it on,
Then it looks more like knockdown but all that matters is if you like it or a customer
You missed the air compressor part - how to attach gun to it. Because people who never did it might think you dont need air compressor at all
8:35 champurrado
Air compressor size?
3+ CFM at 40psi
Thanks big guy.
I need to learn this but i cannot see what your actually laying on the drywall , need black background and camera a lot closer
Nice video, but so far I can't find what I'm looking for ☹
What are you looking for?
Thank you for you fast response but I figured out ( in the hard way )
I was trying to figure out how much mud I would need to texture a room 12 x 15, and yep I was short I have to go and buy another box to finish, by the way thanks to your video my orange peel come perfect👌
Awesome, glad to hear it's coming out great so far. 😎
What are the steps 1) primer 2) texture 3) paint OR 1)texture 2) primer 3) paint ?

Sounds good but cannot see a thing
Don’t you have to use a Hardner to make it stick to the wall
No, never heard of that one, and I address that and many other misunderstandings about Drywall and texturing in my new Drywall school at www.DrywallAcademy.com
