This is unbelievable mate. I could have watched this all day. You have really put some effort into the research for this and it really shows. This is really professionally put together. Stunning mate 👏👏👏
As a lifelong Victorian history (among other periods) buff I thank you and commend your work. As an academic I praise your integrity and hard-work. Many thanks
Fantastic content! As a fellow Manc lass this is so refreshing to watch about our past & heritage.. also the amazing people & stories from the past that build this fantastic city that we call home.
GREAT piece of work. I've read the books and walked the streets but you brought the story of this part of Manchester and Salford's history to life. I really really enjoyed it. Well done

Blown away by this video. Just when I think they couldn’t get better. I love learning the history of my own city that I never knew about. Well done Daft Monkey, you’re so talented at story telling and film making. Can’t wait for the next one! 💛🐝
Nah can't believe i've just heard of you. My boyfriend who has always lived in Miles Platting has just told me about 'The Scuttler Chapter 2'... So I had to watch 1st one you did. Not watched part 2 yet be believe me we're watching together tonight. I was brought up in MP in the 70's mixed race mum Irish Dad Jamacian. Then moved to Ancoats when 11yrs. I know all the places you mentioned in you Doc/Voc... I now live in Harpurhey.. Love it... KEEP IT UP WILL DEFINITELY BE WATCHING NOW. BRILLIANT....
Thank you for another brilliant film. I think what you're doing is so important. We must never forget the poor souls who are the backbone upon which our great city was built.
Thanks a lot Jackie. I have a mission to make sure these people are never forgotten and the building that once were the backbone to our cities success are respected for what they once stood for. Thanks so much 🙌🏼
@@daftmonkey7296 you're doing an amazing job. I was really teary towards the end of this video when you talked about Salford Boys Club. I absolutely agree that clubs should be reopened, for both boys and girls. It's so obvious yet the 'powers that be' can't seem to grasp it
Excellent video, educational in layman’s terms to say the least! Grew up in Ancoats only a few hundred yards from bengal st, the mills use to be our playgrounds in our young years, later years they provided a little treat here and there!😉 Great vid
well we have just finished watching your last of your videos and feels like it did when peaky blinders finished, left wanting more, they were all great to watch and you sound a young guy that is full of respect for history and old buildings, please please keep them coming as you put them across so well we had a stash of snacks and drinks at the side of us so we don`t need to move, we both lived in old trafford and salford in our growing up years and love watching the history of your videos, good luck finding more hidden gems
gail oreilly thanks so much Gail for watching my videos! It really does mean a lot that you took the time out to watch them. I really am passionate about the videos that I do and it makes me so happy that people enjoy watching them. The fact you got snacks and spent your day watching my videos means so much and this is what I do it for! There will be a lot more videos of Manchester/Salford history coming soon!!! Have a great weekend 😆🐒👍🏼
I moved away from England as a kid - I miss it. Canada is a great country but England is home. When I heard you describe your love and curiosity of history, especially the Victorians, it resonated big for me - many thanks for putting this all together, really good to hear a familiar-sounding accent share a real slice of fascinating history. Cheers 🍻👍
Thank so much Adam and I’m glad that the video connected with you in some way. Yeah, Manchester and the whole Victorian period is unbelievably fascinating and it’s full hidden stories good and bad. I’m planning a Scuttlers part 2 this year! Thanks so much for watching mate and take care 🙌🏼⭐️
@@daftmonkey7296 no thanks necessary mate, credit where credit's due 👍 Have been thinking about the 'boring' class trips to see historical places when I was in school - if I'd only know how much I'd change my tune ! Always great to hear from the creator, thanks for responding man - I've pondered why it is that history captures my imagination, thought a lot about why and all I can say for certain is that "It affects me". I think it's the only reason a person needs. Cheers man, really appreciate all the effort you've poured into this - I'll look forward to seeing whatever you've got planned next 🍻👍

These Vlogumentaries are the best on you tube. My wife and me were riveted to this one. Youth clubs have been getting closed since the late 1960s and gangs and the increase in crime is always the result sooner or later.

Great video mate, My Grand Parents Willan and Collins, lived in the area in the 1800's My grand fathers brother was William Willan, The Bradford Street scuttler who broke the scuttler code by murdering a guy called Peter Kennedy, William was 16 at the time and got a reprieve from hanging because of his age and not been in trouble before, he is buried in Harpurhey Cemetry
Wow that’s fascinating!! Did William live a normal life after he was released from prison Ian? I’d love to know more ? I’m thinking of doing another scuttled video in the next few months. Thanks for taking the time out to watch the video, I really do mean a lot and thanks for the kind words. Take cate mate 👍🏼
Well, I've learned something today, and that can't be a bad thing. The only scuttlers I'd ever heard of before was the so named indie rock band. This is another brilliant video. I'm supposed to be putting shelves up, but I've been trawling through some of your other work, and I might have some explaining to do later in the day!
Another great video mate! i was researching about gangs of Uk and Manchester, i searched your video's to see if had it covered? and yes you did ;-) In 1890, there were more youths in Strangeways for “scuttling” than any other offence.
Thanks a lot Cliff and cheers for checking out the video. Yeah, these lads were brutal and they definitely cemented their names into the history books of Manchester. I’m in the process for filming a part 2 😉 take care mate

@paul hant that’s very kind of your Paul, thank you so much for the message and the advice. I totally agree Manchester has changed so much it’s becoming unrecognisable. @@daftmonkey7296 great to see you featured my football club, Manchester City FC, our origins started by the daughter of the reverend of St Mark's church of West Gorton, miss G Connell, whose original idea was to get the gangs off the streets and give them other alternatives through sport and particularly football. Excellent to see that photo of the earliest team to represent what we know today as Manchester City wearing the white Maltese cross on the black shirts. It's also worth noting that amongst all the regeneration of eastlands by our fantastic owners, they have put a college on the site of our training complex, and it's called the Connell college. Not bad all that is it considering we don't have any history. MCFC, no history since 1880.
@@onthekippaxsince75 you don’t know how much it pained me to put that in as a United fan 🤦🏼♂️ haha! History is history mate and good things came from city start up that’s for sure. @@daftmonkey7296 respect pal, and banter aside United's current situation is probably not where you want to be, and as a match going City fan of nearly 50 years and a season ticket holder for 45 of those years, it's fair to say I've seen plenty of rubbish in that time, obviously the last 10 years have been magnificent, but one thing I do know is united will be back at the top some time pretty soon. Keep the faith in your team, the 2 club at the top is great for our city. Looking forward to seeing your next video, I'll be looking out for it.

Thank you very much for your hard work on this piece. Very informative and well presented with a no nonsense approach. As a kid from 1960's Strangeways area ( I lived next to the top end of the prison) it brought back many childhood memories good and bad, we just didn't realise how poor we were. Absolutely love the way you dig in and excavate the gold out of Manchester’s hidden yet peeping out from the thin veil of in your face mysteries. Certainly Ant, you are a true guardian of these treasured portals and an amazing explorer that helps preserve on film these Aladdin’s lamps of magical histories. Recorded in the bricks ,roads and even the high tall palaces that reach up into the clouds. The ghosts of yesterdays shadows and secrets walk beside us disguised in the ordinary as the extraordinary Missed by the distracted crowds. The energy and frequencies of melted light waves that open up their time-tunnels for your good inquisitive soul to wander through. Are very much aware that you seek them out so they clear the smoky mirrors of the past to appear and dance for you. The imagination is the magic flying carpet of the eternal creative mind.. This wonders that you are fascinated by are thought forms from experiences and memories crystallised into the tangible expressions called things of life that manifestation likes to conjure up and bind. It’s clear to see isn’t it. It’s proven to work with the youth that’s are sadly being driven down the wrong path. Even it 10% of these lads that come out of the clubs make a better life for themself then it was all worth it. They should be all over the country to help better society and people .
@daftmonkey7296 They should be. The councils say they don't have them money for them, but in the long run, they would pay for themselves if they were keeping kids off the streets and out of trouble.

Watched this a few times since my first comment. It's brilliant. I'm now reading Andrew Davies' book on the scuttlers. In a strange way, I'd love to travel back and meet them in order to hear them explain why they did what they did, how they lived between work and fights etc. I've even looked up 19th century insults and swearwords, as scuttlers would often hurl insults at passers-by. Thanks for a great vid. Just starting it yet again. 😂

Excellent video, educational in layman’s terms to say the least! Grew up in Ancoats only a few hundred yards from bengal st, the mills use to be our playgrounds in our young years, later years they provided a little treat here and there!😉

Recorded in the bricks ,roads and even the high tall palaces that reach up into the clouds.
The ghosts of yesterdays shadows and secrets walk beside us disguised in the ordinary as the extraordinary
Missed by the distracted crowds.
The energy and frequencies of melted light waves that open up their time-tunnels for your good inquisitive soul
to wander through.
Are very much aware that you seek them out so they clear the smoky mirrors of the past to appear and dance for you.
The imagination is the magic flying carpet of the eternal creative mind..
This wonders that you are fascinated by are thought forms from experiences and memories crystallised into the tangible
expressions called things of life that manifestation likes to conjure up and bind.

You're absolutely spot on with the closures of all the lads clubs. I can't understand why councils aren't opening them again.
Brilliant voice for these films, proper manc...🤓
Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated! Take care Stephen. 👍🏼🙌🏼
Top vid mate! New sub! Love learning about about manc / salford history. And the way you've put it together is top notch hats off mate!
That was really well done and so interesting, heck I remember salford lads clubs!

Absolutely fantastic 👍 I never knew any of this about my town 👍
Thank you so much David, I’m glad you enjoyed it 👍🏼🌟
Another great vid...I used to work at 23 New Mount Street in the 1980's. The area has been transformed but luckily traces of the fascinating history are still there.
Amazing stuff steve! I’m so glad you enjoyed it mate. I’m currently working on a scuttlers 2. Thanks so much for watching the video. Take care 👍🏼🍺
@@daftmonkey7296 have you read "The Gangs of Manchester" by David Moore?
@@stevegalvin9122 I have mate, belting book
Beautiful as always. Thanks Anthony.
Thanks Mandy! I’m sure there will be another video on the scuttlers down the line. The history is massive on them ⭐️
@daftmonkey7296 I intend catching up while waiting impatiently 😁 for your new one.
@@mandyD I’m aiming for it to be out this weekend 🤫 😁
@daftmonkey7296 about time ! 🤣
Seriously, Anthony, I wait very patiently. I have some idea of how long it takes to put a video together. Especially for you, the perfectionist. ❤️
Amazing mate. I love Manchester and enjoy walking around like yourself. I'm going to visit the places in this video and get a feel for it. Cheers for the content mate.
Thank you so much mate, I really do appreciate you taking the time out to watch this video. The places in this video are definitely worth the visit, just to soak in the atmosphere. Thanks once again mate and take care 👍🏼⭐️
Aw thanks so much Simon for taking The time out to watch it again. I’m Glad you still find it enjoyable and informative.
Like you I’d love to go back and get the questions to some of the answers, little did they know that 150 years plus we would still be talking about them today… incredible! Thanks so much mate I really mean that and look out for the Scuttlers 2 I’ll be doing Over the next few months ✌🏼💯👌🏼
@@daftmonkey7296 You bet I'll be watching that, mate. 😂
@@simonholliday9874 haha much appreciated mate 💯
@@daftmonkey7296 Will you be looking into the descendants of scuttlers? It'd be fascinating to trace their families, if they started any, to the present day.
@@simonholliday9874 quite possibly simon yes. I would love to feature a section on the video on
“the lost families of the scuttlers” … that’s got a nice ring to it actually….🤔
Recently came across this channel and wow it’s like breathing in some fresh air! I thought I knew all there was about Manchester’s history and thanks to you I’ve learned a few things! Here’s a bit of a fun fact for you, Wythenshawe is named Wythenshawe because it was littered with ‘willow trees’, and the Anglo-Saxons names it “Withigensceaga” which translates to “small wood of willow trees”, in Modern English that is Wythenshawe (i reckon that’s a poor description lol)
Aw nice one mate! Honestly I really do appreciate it and I’m so glad you’ve found the channel and your enjoying some of the content🙌🏼 I’ve got loads lined up involving Manchester And I’m out this weekend filming another. Really that’s an interesting fact! You learn something new every day as they say 👍🏼 thanks once again mate and take care ⭐️
@@daftmonkey7296 I’ll be staying tuned that’s for sure rkid! Quality work anyway, can tell you put a lot of effort into this 💯 I’ll defo share it around!

@@daftmonkey7296 I loved your fred dibnah visit. That's what made me subscribe to you 👌
@@Rockape501 thanks so much Will! I’ve another Fred video planned in the spring/summer time... watch this space 👀
There were landmarks, I visited my aunt ( grans old house) in the 1970's. My mum grew up in Carlton St which was near the bottom of Langworthy Rd Sth near the docks. I navigated around using the Gasworks as a landmark. Mums family were Irish immigrants, four of them died of TB in Salford.
I know the area well red, sound like you have some fascinating family history! Sorry to hear about your family member dying of Tb. I think my did as well around that era. Thanks for watching the video mate, it’s much appreciated. Take care 👍🏼🙌🏼
@@daftmonkey7296 yes mate. TB didn't care who you were and had no cure. I think the ghost of a dead aunt grabbed me in that old terrace house. But it could just be my imagination.
@@redtobertshateshandles your spot on mate and as for ghost, I 100% believe. I’ve experience some pretty creepy stuff in my time mate, the past can still very much make contact with the present...that’s for sure 💯
Once again a great production, well done
Fantastic piece of work! Deserves an award:)
