- Brothers Gary and Martin Kemp delve into the violent history of gangland Britain and explore the country's most notorious crime families. The brothers begin their journey in Glasgow, the former murder capital of Europe and home to the gruesome torture method known as the Glasgow Smile, exploring the city where gang violence has a history littered with blade attacks. Centred around 18th century migration and the capital's two main football teams, Rangers and Celtic, is Glasgow still the gang capital of britain?

This documentary is years old. I’m from Glasgow. I was born in the 70s and grew up in one of the so called “deprived areas” in the East End of the times. What you have to understand is that gangs only ever fought with other gangs!. If you are just an ordinary person, these people never bothered you unless you bothered them. Glasgow has been regenerated and it is a fantastic, friendly city and welcome all. Yes it used to be the murder capital apparently, but that’s London now. Please don’t let this documentary put you off ever coming to Glasgow. It’s a brilliantly place. Full of amazing history, sites, best food, culture and great banter. It’s the same as all city’s. It has good areas and not so nice ones, but there are a lot less of the bad areas now!. Yes religion is a big topic in Glasgow but don’t be fooled by that, it’s all about the football. If you get asked what “team” you support. I.e Celtic or Rangers that’s what people would automatically perceive what religion you were and team you supported !!!... It’s a great place. People make Glasgow. That’s the Glasgow slogan. Please visit you will love it. ❤❤
Nah it's still a shit hole and do not go there. Scotland is beautiful country but the people there is just drugs and alcohol.
Moved up from the south 8 years ago and would never move back. Love it.
visited Glasgow from manchester for the first time the other week and it was great! Lovely city, will visit again; especially as you have the beautiful loch Lomond close by
In the 60's I stayed in Glasgow at my friends Grandmas' house which I later came to learn was the " Gorbals " I was 17 at the time so we frequented many local pubs etc. We made quite a few friends and the people were just down to earth and friendly apart from the usual headbangers you get in every city. Never felt unsafe and that's even when wandering about late at night with a skinful. Have now been to Glasgow several times since and still hold the same opinion of this great city.
I agree, what a load of bollocks ! Just stick to what you know and your life style follows. Great reply.
Honestly
I`m originally from Poland and I`m leaves a cross Glasgow since 2012

"Smile, you're in Glasgow😊"
I'm from Glasgow and can safely say to you if you do intend to visit the dump keep very safe, There are many many people who will run a blade across your face on any excuse from your shoes to your accent to the fact they had a bad day, we have wee mobs kicking people near to death in packs of 20-30, we have junkies robbing at knifepoint getting their goods but stabbing anyway, we have gang wars and gangland wars, Glasgow town centre is a desolate dump with hardly any shops apart from poundlands, and chap tatty gift shops selling vapes and grinders. I am gonna say before anyone who knows me jumps i and calls me a hypocrite I too have used a blade many time but many years ago and back then I was seen as a phycotic kid 12 year old slashing people with Ice Skate blades etc but nowadays 90% of kids here are like I was because its everyone elses fault bar the kids. we go to panels and here how social work, our parents, schools etc have failed us we watch all them get admonished and we walk away laughing as the victim..... nothings changed in 30 yrs on that front
I'll take you to a few places and change that mindset

Glasgow, once beautiful place.... Ruined by 16yrs of the SNP.
Cutting each other over people kicking a ball around. How dumb can people be?
There's a lot more to it than that - there's a lot of history attached to what people see today - several Centuries worth actually.

This is the stereotypical attitude to Glasgow, In reality Glasgow is a beautiful city where you can enjoy nice food and be entertained in style and Glaswegians are so very friendly. 😊
I’ve been to Glasgow countless times and I’ve always been treat well by the people they’re way friendlier than people in London and Birmingham.
The narrator does say it is like two cities. Heck, many cities have split personalities.
So friendly that they will give u the glasgow smile😂😂😂
You can't walk a hundred meters in any Glasgow Council Project with out being stopped and questioned and then it's up to the lads who are there to decide if you bleed or not, that's the truth Glasgow is incredibly dangerous and very violent my mothers from Govan we moved to Glenrothes on the East coast, none of my family have a single knife scar not one, no one has been stabbed or slashed ever. If we still lived in a Glasgow I doubt I'd be able to claim that and you know that's probably true .
@@pagz4803 Nicola Sturgeon isn't even the First Minister anymore haha you just made yourself look silly you people have a weird obsession with her.
I’ll never understand why anyone cares what someone else’s religion is as long as they aren’t trying to force their religion on you.
Religion is like a dick, it's ok to have one but don't try and ram it down my throat.
The vast majority of these clowns aren't even religious.
The history is far too complex to go into here, but most of these people go to church possibly two or three times in their lives.
Basically, religion is little more than an excuse.
@@SMNC-mf4fb So now I understand, Protestant’s were trying to force their religion on the Catholic’s. This is not right or GOD like and where I would draw the line also.
@SMNC-mf4fb ... Go a bit further back in history. Like all the way back. Religion has divided people since the beginning of time. You have several wars about it as well. You have the Christians versus the Muslims during the Crusades. The Christians versus the Jews during most, if not all, of the Dark Ages and the Medieval period. In the Orient, you had the followers of Confucius vs the Buddhists. India had, and still does, the Hindus versus the Muslims. Further back you have the Egyptians versus the Hittites. In the Bible you have Cain versus Abel. Their quarrel was basically in how one worshipped God and which kind of offering God preferred. Probably the first murder of one caveman and another had something to do with how they worshipped and/or what name they used for their God. In other words I agree with @sheepdog1102. I also will never understand why anyone what someone else's religion is as long as they aren't trying to force their religion on you.
Right, or enslave you, or gives permission to harm you if you aren't a part of it. It seems like some areas of Earth has dark energy.
Waste of life, waste of lives, waste of the most precious things conceivable. What a shame.
You know what changed Glasgow for the better, was the Rave Scene, the House and Techno Music of the late 80's and early 90's, that started off as big events but eventually after the Criminal Justice Bill found it's way into all the City Centre Nightclubs. Prior to that Glasgow nightclubs were drunken pick-up joints, that you could easily get into bother in. They were also not safe for young women to enter on their own. All that has changed and Glasgow is now a city of 'huggers' as that has become the accepted way that you greet or say goodbye to your mates, male or female. We also, on getting off a bus always thank the driver, which was not something that was taught us by our parents, it was just something that people started to do in the 80's. Glasgow is as good as the energy you walk through life with and we can all screw up from time to time, but as you get a bit older you learn from your mistakes. By the way, as much as Glasgow City Council did it's best to curtail peoples enjoyment by not granting licenses to or allowing later openings in City Centre Establishments, Glasgow still has many Pubs and Clubs and a really good music scene, especially Dance Music and it's not unusual for these places to be frequented by folk in their late 50's and early 60's as Glaswegians love a good dance!
Im not reading all that🤣
I live in Glasgow and in truth yes it's a violent place if ur involved in that life but if ur not looking for it u can go through life without trouble
That sounds like anywhere in the world!
Not true, I'm from East kilbride which is tame compared to Glasgow (EK is considered greater glasgow) and I saw someone get their throat slashed simply for not having a cigarette on him!

The razor gangs were mainly around the 1910, 1920s. There is an excellent book called “ No Mean City “ that covers this. Unfortunately, I have lost my copy. 😭🤬🤬🤬🤬

Unemployment, creates a lot of issues, men need to work..
It was Irish immigration that caused the problem to start with, thousands of Irish Catholics just dumped into Glasgow where they weren’t wanted.
@@user-yu8ps4no5e I believe that it was a complex issue, especially if unemployment was a huge issue then there’s more immigrants…creating a problem.
If there’s a major issue with Catholic and Protestant, as well.

This is a massive distortion of Glasgow’s image. I have now lived overseas for nearly forty years but I went to university in Glasgow and spent fourteen happy years there. My daughters were born in the city. I just don’t recognise the picture painted by this presenter and his programme. The Glasgow i knew in the seventies and eighties of the last century was a beautiful, friendly, welcoming and safe city. There was no gang culture to be mindful of. Gang violence was simply not part of the city’s narrative. The Glaswegians are in my experience the most generous and friendliest people I have ever known. The city also witnessed in those years a cultural revival with the proliferation of museums , theatres and other venues of entertainment. I would argue that the image of Glasgow presented in this story is grossly inaccurate. The presenter and producer should be ashamed of themselves.
Gang violence absolutely _was_ part of the city's narrative in the 70's and 80's, and still is to this day. Just because you didn't live in one of the _many_ parts of the city affected by it, doesn't mean it wasn't happening.
I have been in barlinnie prison in Glasgow and 70 percent of prisoners have huge scars on their faces it was crazy 😂nothing like Liverpool prison where I'm from FACTS.
@@user-pw6gm1tu6qalso grew up in Glasgow in the 70s and 80s and was nearly slashed twice as a teenage girl, once in a disco and once in Langside college at the end of the day when everybody had gone home except me and my pal. A guy who was dealing and hanging about didn’t like me talking back. I was very lucky because I felt the blade on my face. I’ve seen people fight with swords in the street from a window and a friend get bottled. A school friend got stabbed with a pitchfork aged 14, luckily he survived. You must have grown up in the West End. The city Centre on a Friday or Saturday night was not safe either after a disco, plenty of fights and slashing. Every twentieth guy walking in a Saturday afternoon was chibbed so I don’t know how you couldnt have noticed that. Violence was everywhere. If someone said, what are you looking at? It meant they were looking for a fight

I am Scottish and worked in Glasgow for two years in the mid-90s. At that time I commuted every day from my home in Falkirk. This engineering company that I worked for was stubbornly divided - why? Religion. You were either a staunch Roman Catholic or a Protestant and the constant tensions between the two eventually got to me and I left the company. During those two years, I lost count of the number of stabbings that took place in the city. It was horrendous. And of course, you had/have Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic - enough said!

Im not even a rangers or celtic fan but know most of their chants just from being in pubs when the old firm is on. They sing about killing each other and alot of them dont even know what they are saying. Im ex army and even in our camp in germany there was a huge rangers/celtic divide that often ended in violence. Songs about king billy, bobby sands, the pope, the IRA, the Queen etc. Its inherently ingrained in the youngsters or 'young teams'. Its a way of life. No one cares about the auld firm especially the young teams
If people want to take a life they don’t need a gun. Look back in history, humanity finds a way to take what they want.
Pointy sticks have been killing people since there were people. Violence is just part of the human condition

It's called a Millwall Smile in the South of London. But I will give you that The Scottish guys used to carry cutlasses, when I was a teen.
This is why it unbelievable for people to say guns are killing people in America. Other countries use knives and machetes. Weapons NEVER KILL. People do.
Just like drugs right? Drugs don’t kill, the people using them do. But you will never hear anyone say that about drugs. If there weren’t so many guns in the US there wouldn’t be as many violent murders. You don’t need guns to cut your meat asshat.
Just my opinion , but I believe human beings are the most dangerous species on earth .
If you give evidence in court in Glasgow, you have to be ready to leave the area right away. I lived in the UK years ago, and witness intimidation was a huge problem.

I find it a bit hard to reconcile - being in a violent Scottish street gang AND playing the flute in a marching band. In most countries, playing the flute in a marching band, pretty much guarantees you'll get beaten up by a gang of thugs every time you try to walk home from band practice. Also, you need pretty precise lip control to play the flute. Hence, I can't imagine how you can proudly sport a 'Glasgow Smile' AND not ruin your flute playing career.

Your all our jailed migrants except for the abbos. What are you talking about?
OH MY GOD! I'm from BRAZIL (a very violent country) and I didn't imagine that GLASGOW had so many problems with violence...I always thought it was very peaceful
they only pretend to be tough
its very peaceful, dont let this foul you
The krays film had some of the most intense violence ive seen.
This is very old. Glasgow is no longer like this at all. The city was turned around by huge input from local government and the police and working with the gangs. Additionally the gangs didn't bother regular people just themselves. It is no longer the murder capitol of Europe and it is a very safe city. It has won awards for being a city of culture.
Honestly I find these gangs absolutely pathetic, is this their ambition in life? Do they believe that anyone respects them? It’s just embarrassing! Anyone can be a thug, there’s not much skill involved, apart from maybe getting a brain to work, which is obviously rather difficult for these people to do.
Not sure how it is with them, but the latino gangs in South and Central America (and Mexico) give you no choice. Either join them or they go after your family.
Exactly anyone can pick up a gun they are not hard men, just cowards using weapons instead of there fists, whatever happened to honourable fight if you are down you have time to get back up or give up now you go down they jump on peoples heads.
Any gang member makes me think of this. Just pathetic like children that haven’t grown up but sadly so much more dangerous and violent. It’s childish behaviour but in violent adults which makes it deadly.
Human society is made up of various types of gangs
@@Nevercared honestly, so a thug who is bigger is the good guy
Good thing you can’t own guns
Absolutely, I’ve always thought that about the UK. It would be a nightmare
No shortage of guns in the UK, Criminals don't care about Laws after all so what a Legal firearm costs in most other Countries imply costs a lot more here.
It's almost like criminals don't care about laws and had shotguns in a public park anyway...
i've been to glasgow 3 years ago, stayed there for 10 days at a friends house in shettleston (Glasgow), pretty average neighborhood, working class homes and people, there was not a time that i felt unsafe. Kids were out playing on the streets, friendly locals, i never saw any druggie or anything dodgy. I feel like these documentaries are often over the top to get attention. I don't know much about the neighborhoods there though. I would love if any locals inform me about shettleston, is it a good or bad area? Is scotland that rough? I had a wonderful time there! Greetings from Greece
The pictures of the knives that are supposed to be scary just makes me laugh
I'm from a city in New Zealand. I'm a nice guy, I offer friends of my room mate food weed and alcohol and in return they have taken it upon themselves to help themselves to my shite went I'm not home! I have been that kind, that they must think that its ok! Just last week I had my electric scooter taken from my house while I was in hospital having surgery. Not one person has owned up, and to be honest I'm Fucken' over it! Now I just want to know if anyone from Glasgow minds if I use this smile, but call it the Christchurch pretty boi? We are a city of stabbers and finger choppers so I wan't the city to know that if you steal from me again, you will get the Christchurch pretty boi! I can't have nice things, and not being the biggest lad. People seem to think i'm a easy earn! Thanks Glasgow. Some support would be fantastic.
Quit letting people walk all over you and knock off the type of life you live before you're a corpse.
What a load of shite man. You’re wee fanny that’s why they’re taking a lend. You’ll not be cutting anybody.
What did you expect
What happend
Get yer self better then let the bastards have it
Love Glasgow.
I got my Glasgow smile outside a pub in Coventry!
Absolute tip of a City - best thing about it is the road out !
Also...did the narrator change halfway into this doc??
My grandfather was a judge following the.surrender in Japan in Hong Kong. Whilst alive he never spoke about it or his experiences during the war as a commando. I now understand why this would have been something he didn't want to share. Truly horrific.
That has no correlation to anything in this documentary at all mate but okay 👍🏻 👌🏻
@@Smokesides4563 you are absolutely rightt - RUclips apparently placed this comment, meant for a video related to war crimes committed by Japan, on another video I watched subsequently. Awfully grateful though that you took time out of your day to point this out.
@@machidamanWhat was the other video about
@@BLACKSTA361 as per my comment, war time atrocities commited by Japan in China during WWII.
The Kemp Brothers 😂
The Krays 😂
You're definitely in Scotland, it's raining!
Pure hell to live under such conditions! Why would anybody stay? In fact it's amazing it hasn't turned into a ghost town 🎉😢
Looks like a Mara salva trucha sicario in the thumb nail ...
Irish and Scottish people love and respect each others nation. Catholic and protestant football supporters ie celtic an rangers might not be the best of friends but any Scottish people are welcome in Ireland whether they are Catholic or protestant. religious differences are old news and doesn't exist in the free state Republic and religious differences wouldn't exist in the North of Ireland if it was a United Ireland and not in British control. it would be like the South where religion is not a issue for us.A lot of Catholic faith Irish have turned away from the whole going to church thing because of the awful crimes committed by the preists and nuns in the 1900s in Ireland. sexualy abusing kids and unmarried young mothers having their children taken away and sold for adoption or left to die and buried in mass unmarked graves which has all come to light recently.I was in prison with a protestant Scottish lad in Ireland and he was treated with the height of respect by everyone in the nick and was looked after with whatever he needed or what contraband we got in as he'd no1 over here to visit or put money in his account for the 5 year's he was inside. He now lives in Dublin with his Irish wife and kids and is a drug Councillor who is giving back to Irish society .
The guy in the thumbnail can really ask " do you wanna know how i got these scars"?
I'm in Australia but I'd love to visit Glasgow. This is a TV program & I always take what they have to say with a grain of salt. It wouldn't make for a very interesting program if everybody was mate's.
The Billy Boys also had links to the Klan in the US.
Given the Klan was started by 6 Scottish Presbyterian Officers after the Civil War the connections were very much rooted in Protestant beginnings.
The Klan system was also brought from Scotland.
Lodge dusters.
That’s a shame
I'm not sure the 'Klan system' was brought from Scotland, rather they just used the word 'Klan', the Dixie is based on the Scottish Saltire and the 'calling of the clans' used a burning cross. Everything else is embellished Masonic crap. Plus violence.
The weird part for me is that Highland clans would have been predominantly Catholic, yet the KKK hated them
The KKK was started by Albert Pike.
I recently heard about this and looked into it.
Strong clan roots for fhe KKK.
Was nice as an Englishwoman in some ways 😂 but also fascinating as I have Scottish ancestors. Also I have NO Idea that the Klan has its roots in the British isles
