- Brothers Gary and Martin Kemp turn their attentions to Britain's capital. London has always had criminals. The biggest city in Britain is like a magnet to those wanting to make a bob or two - even if that means taking the law into their own hands. Since the 1900's as many as 70 gangs have fought it out on London streets. The Second World War put pay to many of them but there was one vicious East End gang that kept alive even up to the 1960's though their origins went right back to the 19th century. Gary investigates the infamous Watney Streeters gang. A hundred years later a new wave of Asian immigrants had arrived in London. To protect themselves they formed gangs but it wasn't long before protection turned instead to extortion and then massive drug smuggling. Martin looks into the ruthless and dreaded Toot Nung gang from Southall, West London.

I've seen gangs made up of people from all kinds of racial backgrounds that you might think wouldn't normally associate, brought together under one common cause, crime. A lot of young people are recruited into gangs in schools and colleges. The emphasis should be on preventing our young people from joining gangs in the first place.
Thanks to organizations like the Italian Mafia and the Krays etc, gang life has been 'romanticised' in order to appeal to young people. A bit like how if you ask someone today what first comes to mind when you say the word 'pirate'. They will come back with some swashbuckling heart throb from a Hollywood movie. They have NO idea how violent and bloody old world piracy actually was. I'd try sending journalists and headteachers etc into prisons and getting prisoners who were also once gang members, to tell their stories about the reality of gang life on video, and urge young people NOT to join gangs. This would also give them the chance to express their remorse and make up, if only a little, for what they have done.
These videos could then be shown to older school year groups as part of PHSE studies. More intervention at that stage might prevent them from joining gangs, and in turn, will make them better future parents and prevent their children from doing so too, so on so forth.
Prevention is better than cure, as you've said. The way to do this is by creating a culture of security/ good self-esteem and hope via education and job opportunities in society, until then crime will often win over delicate young souls.

If you want to stop kids doing crime, you have to give them viable alternatives and empower them by having the confidence and self belief to choose a different path. You also have to be honest with them and tell them why private prisons exist..who benefits from them..why, where the profits go and who invests in them.
When you've got a 15 year old with 100 grand in a shoebox under their bed, simply telling them crime is bad and that they should go and get a job for 20k a year isn't going to cut it.
Penal system doesn't seem to be very harsh as it is in Asia which deters crime much better it seems.
The ham acting in this introduction is hilarious. Reminds me of the Ricky Gervais and Ross Kemp comedy sketch in the show 'Extras' where Kemp acts tough to impress.
South Asian gangs might be powerful in Southall, where almost everybody is South Asian. They can push around their own people, but everywhere else in London they have never really made much of an impact.
More prevalent up north where lots of Pakistanis but there are also ethnic gangs.

The actual problem is open borders and left wing politics allowing everybody into the countries. All of Europe and by now even the US learns this lesson the hard way. Within a decade Sweden turned from the most peaceful european country into a total hell hole because the left-wing politicians decided it would be a great idea to import countless muslims and africans. these kemp brothers act like they are top criminal practitioners themselves. with there "jack the lad" delivery and pseudo menacing expressions. as far as i know there claim to fame extends no further than pop music and acting. the closest they came to being "criminals" seems to be their portrayal of the kray twins 34 years ago. i find them comical.
About 30 years to late making this, we are talking millions a year from drug dealing- Whitechapel ( in 1990) I knew smack dealers who had 3 cars driving around 24/7 ( by day driggies shoplifting by night the hookers/ working girls from Shoreditch Whitechapel all round brick lane; were talking 3 phones with sequential numbers that was ringing non stop- easy selling a few ounces a day of both ( smack & crack) the working girls ( what 150 of them) would spend 300-400 a night EASY - we're talking serious money & very serious violence- they had a car hire company that the drivers would use & this was also how they was laundering the money, having 30 cars -high end range rovers Audi Q8s that they would allow the gangs to use free ( ferrari & 911S Rolls Royce the higher end the more they was laundering ) as the cars was never hired but shared for free & tge miney from the drug dealing was going through this business- this is just the one I happened to know a whole load about but we're talking millions- in fact it's just got worse, certain areas you stand on a street & within 19 mins you'll be offered drugs ( this is what caused the violence-
6 years ago I was doing a day shift on a film unit as security, round mile end. I got chatting to a down and out. He told me that about 2 weeks previously the cops caught a gang of 42 people in one organisation, shutting down the phone line they were running. He said they were all are east Asian

This was an interesting watch, but I worked in the area of Tooting for over twenty years from the mid seventies to the late nineties and never heard of any gangs or gang warfare in this area.
Also living as a child in Bermondsey was aware of Cable Street, there was always the threat of the Cable Street gang, as we new them, being told to not go there after dark, or if you did, at your own peril, yes, there were Irish immigrants, but don’t forget there was also Chinese and Maltese in the area who could look after themselves as well and could be just as ruthless!!!
