The Krays came to Liverpool as well. When they got off at Lime Street station they were met by Ken Dodd, Cilla Black and Ringo Star. Ken tickled Ronnie’s bottom with his tickle stick and Ringo whacked Reggie over the head with his drum stick. Despite Ronnie usually liking a bit of bum tickling, he and Reggie both got the first train back to London, never to return.

When I hear these people speak so proudly about "Being Violent all my life". My only hope is that someone gives them the same level of treatment or even worse than that which they have dished out over the years. I really hope that old saying of "There's always someone younger, bigger and harder" is very very true. Only thing worse that a bully is a proud bully.

Sadly there are very few we don't know about these days thanks to the advancement of technology and the breakthrough that was Encrochat and things, not unless you're talking about people like individual Cartel + Mafia + Bike club members that only kick it in the shadows etc. I agree to a certain extent though, gangsters are gentlemen, they don't need to show off, they know what they have and keep it humble. Knowledge is power and they use years of it to get what they want from behind the scenes. Investing, property ownership and development, business ownership the majority of which are major fronts and facades we probably pay money into every day. Its scary, when you actually experience it, meet those people and share their scars, knowledge and personal experiences, you realize they're just like everyone else with a side job that just happens to be illegal

There was a bar in the digs where entertainers unwound after shows in Manchester clubs. This covered the period 1964 to 1969, and never saw much gangster activity though Phyllis was obviously well connected with the underworld, but in what capacity, who knows. To my understanding Jimmy The Weed was named that because he sold cannabis and it was frowned upon by the original members of the QSG. It was used in a disparaging way. Drugging up the children of the families they knew in the areas they lived in wasn’t a way they were going to make money. A good portion of the money that the members of the QSG got through criminal activity was funnelled into legitimate businesses (granted not always run in a legitimate manner). Some lost money and run business into the ground. Some died wealthy as respectable hoteliers and boxing promoters.

Was cannabis called 'weed' back then, when nearly everything available was hash? Correct me if I'm wrong, I live in the south but 'weed' only became a saying here a good while after the skunk took over in the 90s. Before that cannabis was called pot, gear, puff or draw but never ever weed. Weed itself was always called 'grass' until 92 or later, and then was called skunk as a generic term whatever the actual strain. I'd say maybe 95 before weed became the only or main phrase used ..

I have grown up and lived in Manchester all of my life! (except for one year AYR in Scotland in 2003)
My late Father worked for 'Douglas Flood for over 20 years at his many clubs throughout Manchester, he started off working for 'Doug's' Mother or Mother in law ( I can't remember which) at 'The Old Loom' pub on Moston lane in North Manchester in the late 1950's , and a young 'Douglas Flood' was starting his career (RINGING CARS, and breaking enemies ankles across kerbstones), he liked my Dad (ex Royal Navy, good looking with bags of Southern Charm, as he was from 'The West Country' and had arrived in Manchester, having met a 'WREN' who was older than him and had a child with her, my older Brother Steven ) and said to him; 'One Day Billy, you will work for me'
My Late Dad worked firstly for 'The Moss Brothers' at 'The Domino club in West Gorton, as a waiter in the evenings (about where The Eithad is now, Home of Manchester City Football club, he would later work for Johnson and Nephew steel works who were also on the same site) (he worked as an Engineers mate 7 days a week too) he later worked for Douglas Flood as a waiter at his many nightclubs; The Broadway, The Northern, Blighty's, Tramtracks etc etc ! I met Douglas with my Sister when we were young children and he was a true gentleman, he took us for a spin in his 'minimoke'. Douglas Flood is the man who was reputed to be the person who turned 'The Krays' back at Piccadilly station . Not sure if it is really an 'urban myth', but years ago my Dad said an earlier Gangster 'Jack Spot' (king of the jews) from London had been told NOT to try to take over Manchester by Italian Immigrants , so there may be some truth in the legend , or a combination of the two, or three? Great legend though! From a time when Folk looked after each other! dx
