I LOVED this!! I haven't read any of these mysteries - but I've really only just started to dip my toes into the genre! My dad is a huge mystery fan, like I may have mentioned, and I've heard him mention PD James on multiple occasions. Now I'm curious if he's read Ruth Rendl. I'm going to ask him. And add both to my (ever increasing) TBR. I'm so glad you felt inspired to do this video!
I've read that first Wexford (need to buy the second!) and I've read The Beautiful Mystery by Penny and I really liked both of those books. I get more recommendations from your channel than maybe anyone else's! You're just so enthusiastic about these books and it makes me so excited to read mysteries!
This is such a great video Kate! I love how you went over each one. Louise Penny is one I'll be reading really soon and I already can't wait for our next buddy read!
Great video! I'm planning on trying P. D. James and Louise Penny. I read Tey's Daughter of Time on recommendation from Jane from yesmissjane after she read it, and I really enjoyed it. I am going to continue with Ruth Rendell after reading her first book. Also, yay for inspector Lynley!
I have read most of the series that you mentioned. P.D. James and Josephine Tey are one of my favorites authors. I discovered P.D. James via The Murder Room and I read Josephine Tey's The Franchise Affair when I was in my early teens. I haven't read any Elizabeth George so I may consider it in the future. I am currently reading the last 2 books of Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander books. By the way, have you read Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series?
Great video! :) I'm not sure if you have mentioned these somewhere else, but I think you might enjoy Tana French's novels. I've only read In The Woods yet, but I really loved that one :)
I heard "anglophile" and i stopped everything i was doing! Ha ve to pick up! I love my misteries set in England..... I had previously added both Elizabeths to my tbr to try and have read a Ruth Rendell book years ago and i didn´t hate it but wasn´t a favourite, but i will try another one. I know you are big on the misteries, but i would like a vídeo on your hist-fic recs, too.
Thank you, Maria! I hope your second try with Ruth Rendell goes better. Unfortunately I haven't read all that many historical fiction. Not really enough to make a video.
I hope too - i am sure i havent´picked up the right one for me. Oh i had a notion that you read a lot of hist-fic, but don´t ask from where i got that notion from.
I have read a lot of Elizabeth Peters Books. I love her Books. I haven't read the latest of her new books. Great Video Kate - Thanks for this Video. Enjoy your Books - Have A Beautiful Day - Happy Reading :)
I'm so glad you recommended it!...Oh my gosh! I'm sooo sentimental about Foyle's War - Dave and I went through six seasons the first summer we were married and it was such a fun thing to share.
So many good recommendations, I'm glad you made this video :) I've been wanting to get into mysteries for a while now, and I already had Daughter of Time on my list of books to try. I think I would like cosies and the more literary ones, but perhaps not the more gruesome ones. Would Ruth Rendell be okay for a scaredy-cat like me, or should I begin elsewhere?
Thanks, Hanna! I am such a scaredy cat too and I actually think Ruth Rendell would be ok. Her standalones definitely seem scarier but I think the Wexford series wouldn't be too scary for you!
I have never read Ruth Rendell, even though I keep hearing how good her novels are, and this video really piqued my interest - maybe I will give them a try. Thank you for all your recommendations.
I adore your videos and respect you as a A+ BookTuber!! Do you suggest that each series be read in order...or which of the series can you float around within the series?? Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much! I think that it depends on what kind of a reader you are - Wexford doesn't really have to be but I've enjoyed seeing his life happen in order. I think P.D. James Dalgliesh and Amelia Peabody series don''t have to be. Louise Penny's series, Flavia de Luce, and Elizabeth George's Lynley definitely has to be read in order.
I'll be starting "Still Life" by Louise Penny as soon as I finish the book I'm currently reading. And I found out today that book 8 of the Flavia de Luce series will be out this September! I just pre-ordered it from Book Depository. :-)
Kate I love your channel! I've just switched from writing romances to the humorous cozy culinary cat book - called Death by Crockpot - I'd love to send it to you as a gift!!
Hi, Kate. I've just discovered you and am loving your videos. Just one little teeny correction to this one: PD James was high Anglican and not Catholic. They seem similar on the outside but are in fact different. Here in the states she's be called an Episcopalian.
I read a lot of mysteries mostly cozy but have not read any of these authors. Lots of new authors (to me) to explore and my library carries most of them. Thank you for the recommendations. You make them all seem very interesting.
There is a lot of mystery writing that is really literature travelling incognito. The danger is that such writing can lure you into a magic wood from which it is difficult to exit. Who wants to read The Magic Mountain when a walk in the Ngaio Marsh beckons.
I would like to recommend Faye Kellerman to you for her Peter Decker/Rina Lazurus mysteries.....they must be read in chronological order to see the Peter and Rina's relationship flourish. If you like Death in Holy Orders, I would recommend you look at Father Andrew Greeley's Blackie Ryan series or his Nualla Anne McGrail series.
Louise Penny is amazing. Her last book was based on a quotation from the Tempest. "Hell is empty; all the devils are here." A quote for modern times.
Just finished All the Devils are Here...It was amazing!!! I'm so sad that I got all caught up.
Thank you for giving the nod to Ruth Rendell. She is amazing!
I LOVED this!! I haven't read any of these mysteries - but I've really only just started to dip my toes into the genre! Thank you, Katie! So fun that your Dad also loves mysteries. I can't wait to hear what you think of both authors. :)
Thanks for the recommendations! I've been looking for a good mystery series to check out and a lot of this just fit the bill. Added a bunch to my TBR.
You're so welcome!
I've read that first Wexford (need to buy the second!) and I've read The Beautiful Mystery by Penny and I really liked both of those books. I get more recommendations from your channel than maybe anyone else's! You're just so enthusiastic about these books and it makes me so excited to read mysteries!
I hope you get to some more Rendell and Penny! Seeing this comment made me soooo happy! I'm so very happy to spread the mystery love on booktube.
This is such a great video Kate! I love how you went over each one. Louise Penny is one I'll be reading really soon and I already can't wait for our next buddy read!
Thank you Sarai! I think we have many many buddy reads ahead of us. :)
Sweet set at the Bottom of the Pie I'd great fun...and a good read.😄👍
Great video! I'm planning on trying P. D. James and Louise Penny. I read Tey's Daughter of Time on recommendation from Jane from yesmissjane after she read it, and I really enjoyed it. I am going to continue with Ruth Rendell after reading her first book. Also, yay for inspector Lynley!
Thank you so much, Dawn! I hope you enjoy all of the recommendations and I'm glad you plan on continuing with Ruth Rendell!

Thank you, Jackie! Unfortunately I think there's a bit more gore and violence than I like to see in mysteries in Tana French's novels.
I heard "anglophile" and i stopped everything i was doing! Ha ve to pick up! I love my misteries set in England.....

I need to read The Daughter of Time, I have had it on my list ever since you mentioned it. So many great mysteries and a great recommendation video :)
Thanks, Kate! Knowing the mysteries that we've enjoyed together I think Daughter of Time is something you would really enjoy.
Of all of Tey's wonderful mysteries this is my least favorite. Try "Brat Farar " or "The Franchise Affair". Also " To Love and Be Wise" is great.
I really need to read PD James especially since she's on that 1000 Novels Everyone Must Read list! Great video as usual :)
Yes you do!! I have a feeling that you would enjoy her.
Great video! I'm so glad you enjoyed Josephine Tey! Have you ever watched the TV series Foyle's War? It strikes me as something you would like
I'm so glad you recommended it!...Oh my gosh! I'm sooo sentimental about Foyle's War - Dave and I went through six seasons the first summer we were married and it was such a fun thing to share.

I hope you do and that you enjoy her!
She also writes as Barbara Vine and I actually prefer those books.
As a teenager I loved the Dick Francis mysteries. I never see him mentioned in any book recommendation videos.
Yes! Of course it turns out his wife helped write many of them but they are mostly very fine!
Fantastic video, thank you Kate
You're welcome, Deb!

A great series is the Bosch series by John Connelly…it has also been made into a terrific TV series (7 seasons).
No Inspector Morse by Colin Dexter?
Yes! And the 3 tv series are all great!
Have you read the Enola Holmes series by Nancy Springer? The first book is now a Netflix movie called Enola Holmes.
Do you consider the novels by Louise Penny cozy mysteries?
Palabra de teatrera since I noticed she hasn’t answered you in 3 months, I’ll jump in here and say I wouldn’t consider them a cozy mystery at all.
I love mystery...my fav..😊👍

Have you read Ellie Griffiths--super series--Julierose (a newbie to your channel) ;))) and avid lifelong reader
