I want to read The Reformation as Renewal too.

Someone else might have mentioned this, but did you know Cupid and Psyche is the base myth of Beauty and the Beast? I’ve heard it related to Grimm’s Cinderella, too. It’s just so interesting to me how all the fairy tales circle back and around other myths.

Thanks for your perspective on Orley Farm. I came away with a different perspective. For me Trollope was pointing out how corrupt and unfair the legal system is, in that she "gets off" from her crime. And that it was probably not that different from real life, which has so many very evil and corrupt people getting off scot-free.

Hi Kate! For that "annoying sticker on the front cover" ... I have a simple solution for you that has worked for me many a time. Do you have a bottle of that Goo Gone in your cupboard? I put a small amount on a dry rag cloth and gentle wipe around the sticker, then leave the rag with the Goo Gone on it for a couple minutes, covering the sticker. Upon removing, scratch the sticker off with your fingernail. It should come off easily and cleanly. Then simply clean your now spotless book cover with a slightly damp cloth to get rid of any residue left behind by the Goo Gone. 🤗

Your pink notebook is so cute with your pink and purple fleece! I'm so glad I decided to DNF Orley Farm early on. 😅 Good for you DNF'ing Old St. Paul's though. I loved Connie Willis' To Say Nothing of the Dog, so I think I'll have to check out Doomsday Book. I'm so pumped for MGM too! Thanks for mentioning Miss Moore Thought Otherwise; I've requested my library purchase it. For the Love of Autumn is such a sweet book!

Yay for the Autobiography of Margaret Oliphant! I'm working with it in my dissertation. It is very interesting and rather sad. And it looks like you got the edition edited by Elisabeth Jay, which is good. She includes things that were left out in the original publication.

I was chuckling at your thoughts on Orley Farm Kate and the fact that reading a plague book wasn’t the best idea 😁. I figure you could just aim for 200 Victorian books by the end of Victober and that would maybe take some pressure off, it could be a Victober finale video!

I used to check out those Margot Benary-Isbert books from my elementary school library over and over again. My favorite of hers is The Wicked Enchantment.

Perfect length for me to watch with a cup of tea! Those cursed stickers, I’m always torn between picking them off and having a nice clean book or potentially causing more damage! 😬 I believe Elizabeth from aliteraryprincess has read the Oliphant biography and really enjoyed it! 👍

This haul is getting me excited for Middle-grade March! Rosemary Sutcliff has been on my radar for a while so I’m definitely going to prioritize her this year.

Does Margaret Oliphant have a book with "rector" or "vicar" in the title? I know you mentioned a book by her ages ago that I thought I'd like to read, but I can't remember. It looks like our library doesn't have it, but we can order nationwide under certain circumstances. The library did have the autobiography and letters by her, though.

I loved this! I found the audio book of the Ark on hoopla. The reader is really good and uses a German accent (while reading in English) when the characters speak.

This is an awesome haul. I'm looking forward to diving into that massive Reformation book! I am also checking out the new KB Hoyle book and the Carrie Brownell book. I always learn about new and interesting books from your library and book hauls! ❤

I think if Eliot had delved into the other characters then people would say they wished she had delved more into the ones she did delve into. The fact is all her characters have a story. I think hearing more of Lydia’s story would have been interesting as well as Gwendolyn’s sisters or even Gwendolyn’s family during her childhood losing her father and then living with her stepfather and what made Gwendolyn this selfish, egotistical person. However, there is no way to go into all the characters without the book going on forever so Eliot has to choose a few and leave people longing to know more about the others. I think this gives credit to her as a writer that people crave to know more!

"At the Back of the North Wind" is my favourite Macdonald novel (although haven't read all them yet). I certainly found it much more powerful and moving than "Phantastes" or "The Princess and the Goblin". Would love to hear your thoughts on it. Such a fascinating exploration of the nature of Providence and why "bad" things happen.
