      That is such a beautiful way of putting it! I wholeheartedly agree with you. It does really feel like George Eliot is just delighted to have a reader on a journey through any of her novels.

    Nice video. I've read a few of these books, and liked them all. Kristin Lavransdatter is my favourite. Undset won the Nobel Prize for literature largely on the strength of this book. The Master of Hestviken books are almost but not quite as good.

    Lots of chat about James meandering, it went well to me because the gal, Jane, was pretty much done with him and he was going to risk-all for nada. I've been grateful that in English storytelling the cheating is seen as "being foolish" whereas in the U.S. we seem to hang on to it and want to see or hear more due to the scandal or whatever it is we get all hyperactive about over it whether it's disgust or allure, or a bit of both? It sells I guess. But with James Garfield it's more a concern than the universe exploding and garnering attention to sell advertisements, however scandal gets used. I feel like maybe it's because the culture in England is so darned old that the infidelity story is so well known that no one is going to bother getting hyper about it. It might be like acting as if Menopause is "new" when it goes back to the year dot? I get more fascinated by how the waiters on Crete grab people to dine together and the couple does notice they were captured as Amy and Miss Read are. The book often makes me want shrimp or whatever it is they are having. And them tripping on the cat or Miss Read having her contemplation about the monk being SO solitary and wondering if he was a reflection of her own life or it would be in the future. Amy's fear of flying gets pretty intense but as soon as they lift and are off it rather fades away, too.

  • @DWor-
    @DWor- Месяц назад

    Glad to hear the recognition of yankee TV potentially ruining Fairacre or anything by Miss Read by adding too much drama. That would be my expectation, too. Alas. Then again over dramatizing does get to more and more places from what I recall in trying to pick productions based on books. Ah, well.

  • @DWor-
    @DWor- Месяц назад

    With Vanessa's later love interest, I remember the way they said he wore a kilt was "The Kilt" because I suppose that was how people spoke it conversationally and then Miss Read and Amy personally wondered why it was said that way: Why The Kilt? It makes it sound like the entire male population shares only one garment between them. XD And yep, why call it a quiz? It was a panel, sure, but there wasn't like a spelling bee type thing, or it should be titled: a gentle inquiry panel, something like that. I dig the Easter Bunny chat, too. Whenever I hear what people relate about how the Easter Bunny works is always so different, like the traditions of how and what to do is so different and I wonder why now, so I'm glad y'all brought that up! (Food for thought and grounds for further research.)

    Wow... it is SO refreshing to listen to someone so passionate about books, discussing some narrative and all this stuff I haven't heard anyone talk about for years, by golly. Dang, man. Feels like I'm finally finding what I've been looking for for decades and just didn't figure it out until way later, alas.

  • @DWor-

    Oh my gosh, thank you! That whole school-closing motif over and over and over! I love it, whoever said, "Just deliver or stop talking about it!" That is one of those attempts to put us at the edge of our seats cliche's and it never actually arrives anyway! There should be something out there where they try to bring that up and then, "Yes, that and Joseph Coggs will age two decades into his actual age, that'll be the day" remarks or why are the people who've been working at the school longer than Miss Read have are still working there when she retires as if they're eternally middle aged or something?!

  • @DWor-
    @DWor- Месяц назад

    It is fun to hear expectation of things like seeing from Mrs. Pringle's perspective and thoughts of something about Minnie (EGAD) but I could well imagine it somehow, I think just from knowing folks who were either a bit like Minnie or in a few cases a lot like her, and the fascinating thing I LOVE about Miss Read and her books is they go against the grain in such a conservative way, the teacher is like a non-conformist from cherishing being a spinster or into her solitude against popular-demand and that kind of thing. However, to top it off there is an interview with her and she was *not* one of those authors who had tons of rejection letters, she did short articles for a few magazines and someone at a publishing house requested her to write a novel and she was worried she couldn't do it for the length and the guy actually told her, "Oh, rubbish, it's nothing!" and she walked out of that visit as she said "more dead than alive", so not only are her books non-conformist in a way we never think of, where everyone else wants her in a romance and she doesn't want that, but also she as an author is requested rather than wanting to be a novelist and the usual rejection that comes with that. Amazing!

    It's fun listening to readers wonder if she will get hitched to someone early because I found Fairacre by the second to last book so I always knew going in that wasn't going to happen. Good stuff, nice to listen to people get together and read books particulary a favourite book series. Have a UK pen friend who was so blown away anyone from the U.S. would loves Miss Read and now I'm looking around seeing clearly it is not only me!

  • @DWor-
    @DWor- Месяц назад

    Wow, the flasher stuff! Well pointed out! But no, no full-frontal nudity in Fairacre, at least the books... Oh, and showing up to Mrs. Pringle's door and fanfiction, my chap and I were developing one that I can hopefully conjure about Mrs. Pringle when I get better (as I am messed up right now.) I was thinking and my fellow wanted the results, about how what with her being a little brat as a child and messing with the ducks in the duck pond that it ended up in which, as years went by, ducks flying over her head would poo or drop rotten eggs on her and that would be why she is so grumpy all the time, never revealing the reason, but the ducks she taunted always had it out for her. Then I added an idea that the only time the ducks flying overhead missed her was when she was fighting with Mrs. Fowler that time and the ducks decided Mrs. Fowler was just as good a target anyway. ^_^

  • @DWor-
    @DWor- Месяц назад

    Minnie Pringle is very "What can you do...?" And the answer is not much. Teacher and others have made attempts and get no where, though it might not be as much effort as people made with Mrs. Coggs, poor lady, whereas with Minnie you know at some level Minnie is entertained by her own drama with her mad grins and ecstatic contemplation about her own wild life. Oh, true, no concept of self-improvement, I agree! So glad people are still talking about books, BLESS YOU! All y'all! ^_^

    I just finished Mill on the Floss and I wept like a baby. It was a painful ride, but Maggie's capacity for and persistence in love is really wonderful. I think Tom's realization in the end though tragic, justifies Maggie's journey and trials. It's very bitter sweet, but we can learn from this to value those who love us whom we take for granted. Everyone will fall in love with Maggie.

    For me, Oliver Twist was amazing for the character of Nancy. Most of Dickens women are blah, at least in the books of his that I read. But Nancy captured me completely. How I prayed that the book would not end like the film or the musical did. I recall that the book was very exciting. His other books left me cold. I realize that Dickens books purpose was often to educate or expose some wrong in his world. But oh what a chore it was for me to get through them for school assignments. If only they had assigned Oliver Twist I might have developed a love for Dickens. Well, Jane Eyre changed for me after I read Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I always thought Rochester was a bit of a bully with a cruel streak in him. After reading Rhys's book I could not accept the portrayal of the mad wife in the book anymore.
