  • I use my one step paint recipe on this furniture flip, I show how to avoid brush and roller marks and streaks, saving money on the paint allows me to splurge on hardware and accessories so I can make more $$ per flip

    Products used
Ovation Paint (custom color I mixed using oops paint leftovers) I do go a bit darker when I do the recipe bc the white primer will lighten it a bit
    Primer Zinser 123 water based
Zinsser 02004 Bulls Eye 1-2-3 All Surface Primer, Quart, White www.amazon.com...
Clear Coat - Varathane water based polyurethane
If I get a satin clear coat then I go with a flat paint and I like that combo, or if I get a matte clear coat than I use a satin paint finish. Basically go for one satin and one flat/matte to get the matte finish look.
I couldn’t find a good price for matte polyurethane in quart size on Amazon so I linked satin, I use satin a lot too I just go with a flat paint when I use satin clear coat in the recipe and get the same finish vice versa. The calcium carbonate gives a more flat finish to the whole thing as well so even with satin poly you’ll get a perfect matte finish this way.

I should add that many furniture artists I admire are great with pure chalk paint, I am not though 😂 so I stick with my 1 step paint recipe, or hardware store type paints (acrylic based) and enamel paints. This recipe does have chalk in it, but such a small amount that I don’t encounter the struggles I did early in my career with full on chalk paints. ✌️ ❤️

By adding calcium carbonate to your paint mixture you turned it into chalk paint. Calcium carbonate is chalk. I will try the recipe though since it means not adding extra layers to the piece. Nicely done makeover.

Hello I'm a seventy-two-year-old great-grandmother I love watching what you do I like the way you cut the bottom scalloped off and made it look more modern that was a real slick little trick you did there I really like that I used to do furniture and I'd never never thought about doing something like that anyway you're doing a good job keep up the good work I love watching you

Start with something you like but won't stress about if it's messed up...and use mostly (if you can) what you have on hand, because starting is the hardest part.
Try different painting and finishing techniques on different areas to find out which one you like best. Then, do it.
If you don't like it try something else over the top.
The more you do the more creative you will become. The action alone gets the creative juices flowing.
      Good luck!

I am so blessed to see this video. It is literally an answer to prayer. It popped up on RUclips this morning after praying for direction on what furniture to take with me when I downsize to a smaller house after being widowed a year ago. I have the exact dresser and never dreamed of painting it and don't like the curve on the bottom. Love how you cut that part off! Thanks for the simplicity.

Omg, you just rocked my world with your “all in one” paint hack. I’m not lazy, but I don’t want to have to do three steps to get a beautifully painted and finished piece…..time is of the essence 😊. I also create my own chalk paint with calcium carbonate so this is a real game changer for me.

Thanks Shannon for taking the time to create this content. Because I can’t afford new, I’m on a mission to paint all my old stuff. Started this weekend using your paint recipe on a fiddly carved coffee table. It did lighten up my base color but fortunately i had also bought some Waverly chalk paint (Walmart) in various shades. One of them was the perfect color to deepen the mix to the shade of the original color. I tell you this because the most important thing I’ve learned from you is to be brave and just get started. 🤓. I can’t wait to move on to some of my uncarved pieces to use the roller technique but your paint formula is quite self leveling. Thanks again!!!

Copy of my comment, hope it inspires fun creative works!
      Copy:
You did very well and the Cane piece adds a current design/decor value that really makes the piece fresh and current.
Note: I recently saw a hint that metalics and metals are a potential Now-element.
The Newest Home Design trend is influenced by "Modern-Victorian" (painful ehh b/c that requires a really gifted Professional to pull it off with a pleasing outcome, (Victorian is so heavy and cluttered). I share this so you may be looking for pieces with those curves found in Victorian.
*Here's the 🔑 Tips to a Modern-Victorian:* Think in terms of outlines and clean space = the Frame w/o all the little details. Current Color Palette with (Gemtone accent Pieces).
Definitely Google "Modern-Victorian" and go to Images.
It is a matter of applying Minimalism to Victorian to get the success and "Minimal Victorian" is just a real Oxymoron. (Why can't they get some Harmony in Mind, in the Designer World?)
However, there is Harmony in every Subject If one goes to it with "Moderation in Mind", and that's exactly where the Success will be realized.
Rather than the Victorian busy prints for upholstery, smooth continuous colors that are textured and Gemtone for focal points (Ruby, Saphire, Emerald, and White Diamond). As well, a Victorian frame sofa with the neutrals like greige, sage, pearl, a Ruby Throw and Ruby Pillow with 1 Ruby Tassel.
Tri shades of White, Milk, and Cream. High Gloss Pure White Trim, "Lighting is Most Important"
Hope you enjoy these tips and Best Successes.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, whether it is old hardware refurbished or newer ( modern/abstract looking) style which seems to be what's in at the moment, old style can be beautiful and so is the newer abstract type looking furniture.

I am also anti chalk paint. When I first started painting furniture I kept hearing how good it was because you don’t need primer, but it made my projects so difficult - other paints are so much easier to work with than chalk paint.

ok this is an older video, but i did recently do my version of your 1 step paint- I used some older grey paint latex, grey, added a cup of each primer, paint and semi gloss polyurethane. I used baby powder and baking soda, did get a chalk finish,. However texture. I sanded between 3 coats. Ended up with a washed look. I am liking it. Going to seal it with minwax paste wax. I have that on hand. Keeping the peice, so we'll see how it holds up in the kitchen area. Appreciate your sharing, Me in the experimental stage. I am getting to the point where I am with you on the chalk paint. Brush strokes, thick, and uneven.

I totally agree with the hardware situation! I’m so lazy! sometimes and I just spray the old hardware because I hate making new holes.🤣 Amazon is not longer 2 day delivery more like 2 weeks for me so that doesn’t push me to get new hardware either.

This turned out very nice. It's been a long day and watching your video was very relaxing. I picked up a dresser today and looking for ideas. I love this.
