I go to a gifted school. I am very good at stuff. But I always put it off and fuck myself. Really thinking deep about your problem just makes you think bad about yourself. So dont think deeply about it. I feel so shit about myself and just hate every little detail about myself. But then i am just my bubbly self after and thats what i am always seen like. Someone on TED gave very meaningful advice once : Do something boring once a day for an hour. It helps you get used to not being overstimulated all the time .
Hanan Casla i guess what they meant is TO BE doing something. Like reading a dictionary. Extremely boring but perhaps out of that, you’ll be doing other boring stuff, but just with a new and expanded vocabulary lol
Today I wrote down in my notes where my life is at right now. I’m a second year college student, I don’t have a job currently and have $4 total in my bank account. I only have about a year worth of credits in college because last year I played college baseball and didn’t really care about my classes much. I’ve since quit baseball and have been at home this year taking online classes. Found Matt’s channel not too long ago and it’s been motivating me to get out and do more. I’ve been going back to the gym and been tracking my college schedule better. Matt, you helped me get out of my room and go do something with my life when nothing else was even slightly motivating me. I have a job interview for a part time position later today, and I just wanted to let Matt know how much he’s helped me get on the right track to just get things done. God bless you Mr. Matt
i hate online classes, i pay more attention to my grades than my knowledge. All I do all day, everyday is sit in front of a computer screen, typing away at the same gray screen for hours on end. It’s gotten to the point where i can’t find motivation to finish work, now all i do is stare at a wall, thinking about doing the work.

1. Nah, been doing a job that I love for years. It always just gets harder each time lol I agree with everything else though. Specially that pomodoro technique and things always take longer than expected.
Great tips in this video. My personal tips: 1. Focus on completing tasks rather than postponing them to better take advantage of your free time. 2. Spend some of your free time on activities that guarantee value and personal growth 3. Identify your Bermuda triangle (3 social media accounts) to understand how your time is spent 4. Make a simple To-Do-List to track your various tasks, to avoid forgetting and accumulating unexpected work - as well as completing them one by one. 5. If things still aren’t going as well as they might, make a schedule to properly manage your time. 6. Distinguish and separate when you use time for work, free time & free time with added value and growth. 7. Use some free time to produce rather than consume 8. Find a passion to develop and don’t worry if it changes overtime. These points serve as a guide that will help you mitigate and reduce procrastination - don’t worry about completing each and every point, you can begin with one point and slowly start climbing up.
I tried the Pomodoro technique for a long time, but it wasn't great for me because I felt like my flow was constantly being interrupted by the breaks. What I do instead now is a system I came up with myself: the last-digit rule. I write down the exact time on the clock when I start working, and I tell myself that I can only stop when the time ends in that same digit. So if I start at 12:21, I can stop at 12:31 or 12:41, 1:01, etc. When I get absorbed in the work, I continually miss my next chance to stop working and I wind up working large chunks of time straight. When I need a break, I keep an eye out and I really do stop when the digit arrives, and then I take time to check my phone, etc. This makes it a lot easier to start working, because I know every time I start the clock I'm not in for a long arduous work session - I can stop in as little as ten minutes, and I'm in complete control of how long I work! It's so much less stressful than the Pomodoro technique, at least for me.
I just want to let you know that this method works for me. For the last two months I've been able to continue my study without worrying about the breaks, and when I decided to take a break, I wouldn't have to wait for more than nine minutes. Thank you for the great idea!
I blame online school for my trash motivation and procrastination issues I used to actually get stuff done now I watch videos like this God please save this sad world
1. Resume doing a previously started task for 30 mins 2. Number 1. will get the brain working so you can enter flow 3. Dopamine will help you learn and be productive, so going to a new coffee shop to do work will release some 4. Use the pomodoro technique (25 minute work blocks with breaks) it adds urgency 5. Create smaller deadlines
Great advice. Procrastination stems from past experiences of doing difficult work. Your brain stores the memory as an emotion, and seemingly difficult tasks triggers the emotion, which in turn, puts you off wanting to do the task. It's important to get to the root of the issue in order to sort it out.
1. Change your environment - like doing work in a new environment like a different coffee shop 2. Setting timers (25min work and 5 min rest) 3. Setting additional deadlines for big projects 4. Scheduling regular meetings 5. Creating rewards for the work you have done.
See the thing is rewards are bad for me because, I feel so entitled to overly reward myself. Say I study for 25 minutes, I would give myself 2 hours to play around and end up forgetting the work. nothing has worked for me I might need counseling for this TT
I resonate with this. I got my 'warning' in my second year of university. A big near miss. I decided I was never going to do that again. In my final year, I made the decision I was doing everything at the earliest opportunity, not the latest, and I started reading ahead of lectures rather than reading behind. The irony is, not only was my third year the easiest year I'd had, I actually created MORE time for me. Nowadays I teach on this topic myself. Thanks for sharing this great video.

Merrill George Its not improving everything except the main thing. It's not wanting to start a project until you are sure you can get it perfect , you know everything you need to know, you have everything you need etc. instead of just getting it done.
I was literally telling myself to stop procrastinating 15 minutes ago. I'm going to watch this video six times to make sure I really get a grasp of it.
The thing that really hit me 9:30 when you said that these things that i do to procrastinate pulls me away from the things that are most important for me. That is so true, my studies are the most important thing and neflix doesn't come even close. :DD I got inspiration from this video and I will definitely go back to work.
I was a really bad procrastinator because I loved the stress I work my best under pressure and I always got my work done some how. But I came up with a really simple plan that works every time; I would get a piece of paper(not connected to notebooks) I would write 5-10 tasks I wanted to do in a day. Once I completed a task I scribbled it out(very satisfying) once I got those tasks done I would throw the paper away. It is always satisfying to cross out finished work and once it is done throwing it away is that weight being lifted off your shoulders.
If you can only do 2 or 3 that’s still fine as long as you are getting that reward you can have 2 tasks or 50 just keep it reasonable because you want to make sure you can achieve the goals on the paper. Try not to work on the same piece of paper over 2 days. A piece of paper a day keeps the procrastinating away (:
"It's almost never as difficult or painful as we imagine it to be" My brain, preparing a panic attack the moment I open my textbooks: allow me to introduce myself

I’ve had a problem with this for a while, trying to make things as perfect as possible, shit even before I clicked this video I had to force myself to do it, almost added to “watch later” and I knew then and there that was me procrastinating. I have nothing to do rn yet I still was gonna watch this productive video later
I guess I'm a really good procrastinator because my watch later list is already full... (it maxes out at 5000 btw.) I've got to go to download the videos on the RUclips app using my mobile data instead of Wi-Fi because I have the setting that only lets you download the videos on Wi-Fi, but that's fine because it acts as a sort of second watch later list in a way because it stores the channel's name and the videos title to view along with the thumbnail without actually downloading the video. That secondary "watch later" list is over 3000 videos... I'm at a standstill because the videos could be helpful to me, but I don't know if they will be until I watch them, but I don't want to watch them in case they aren't helpful because that would be wasting my time... Fun times...
Great video! Thank you! I took some notes for you guys: - Set an alarm for 1 hour and work during that time. No distractions. After the alarm rings you are allowed to take a break. -Divide a big project into small milestones with deadlines. -Reward yourself when you do what you said you where going to do, guilty free.
I had homework to do since feb 8th, for feb 12th, and my last chance was till feb 18th. It's feb 24th and I haven't even started. I really need to overcome this before it's too late.
When you first started going mainstream, i always thought ' he reminds me of thomas frank' who is essentially one of the biggest inspirations of my life, also my biggest crush eheh. But i was getting mad at the beggining of this video thinking 'this is just the same video from frank's' then you dropped his name. I wish he got recognition as much as you did. anyways, love you both!
I’m currently plunging into my why, and I find it’s due to the minimal effort I put into everyday tasks. With being intentional about tasks ahead of time, and stretching my comfort, I was more in control, hence motivated to continue pushing the bar. No one is perfect, nor has anyone arrived, so don’t think you’ll be perfect; just take it day by day.

Here's a tip to read when reading textbooks: *listen to themed music* For example if you're reading about medieval times put on instrumental medieval music or if you're reading about ancient egypt put on instrumental ancient egyptian music. It helps you to feel like you're in that time era or at least be able to visualize what you're reading better Try it and see if it works for you, it definetely worked for me!
As a programmer, I find solutions via software. I coded the simplest thing ever: A timer that reminds me every minute to keep working using a beep. When things go smoothly, I adjust it to 2-3 or sometimes 5 minutes. My main issue with procrastination was that I fell into it very easily. With a timer, I remind myself to keep working, and it feels like my judging myself (it really helps for me).

@@juicysatsumabeauty how to get over this??
I was literally telling myself to stop procrastinating 15 minutes ago. I'm going to watch this video six times to make sure I really get a grasp of it.
The thing that really hit me 9:30 when you said that these things that i do to procrastinate pulls me away from the things that are most important for me. That is so true, my studies are the most important thing and neflix doesn't come even close. :DD I got inspiration from this video and I will definitely go back to work.
I literally have a test tomorrow and I was struggling to sit and study. This was such a gift.😭

I have discovered that procrastinating is a symptom of a bigger problem. In my case, it is frequently the result of fear of failure.
for me it's partly that and partly not being able to prioritize it properly
I feel the same!
yes, and my reason is to feel the adrenaline one day before the test...
I.e. perfectionism
Matt stop procrastinating your podcast! We miss it!

I’ve had a problem with this for a while, trying to make things as perfect as possible, shit even before I clicked this video I had to force myself to do it, almost added to “watch later” and I knew then and there that was me procrastinating. I have nothing to do rn yet I still was gonna watch this productive video later
Cam Starting is the hardest part! Organizing the day can help quite a bit too 😄
You've literally spoken on my behalf
Matt knows his audience all too well now.
Yes he does lol😂
I’m here doing work right now. then this comes up and I have to watch it, therefore procrastinating. Thanks Matt
Great video! Thank you!
I took some notes for you guys:
- Set an alarm for 1 hour and work during that time. No distractions. After the alarm rings you are allowed to take a break.
-Divide a big project into small milestones with deadlines.
-Reward yourself when you do what you said you where going to do, guilty free.

Here's a tip to read when reading textbooks: *listen to themed music*
For example if you're reading about medieval times put on instrumental medieval music or if you're reading about ancient egypt put on instrumental ancient egyptian music.
It helps you to feel like you're in that time era or at least be able to visualize what you're reading better
Try it and see if it works for you, it definetely worked for me!
Such a piece of great advice you did put out there - matching music almost always helps.
@@minddivesounds5730 Thank you very much, it always seems to help me because i get distracted alot
