a note about “holding yourself accountable”: i’d suggest instead of announcing your goal, you should stay quiet at first and announce it in the middle or during the end. usually when you announce it before you’ve started, you gain that satisfaction from people and your brain tricks you into thinking that you’ve done something when you really didnt, and it makes you want to do it less.

I've walked every day this year! I know walking every day this year isn't achievable, but my goal is to walk my dogs every day in January. It's good because I know how much they love it and my all or nothing personality pushes me to never miss a day. Day 8 and still going strong! P.S.: Thank-you for thinking of my beautiful country. It feels so sombre here and nobody is happy with how our government is handling it.
Your dog is your accountability partner no fair :p I'm working on doing 10k steps on my days off. I'm on my feet every day at work. So I have a similar mission.
Update: I did it!! I walked every day in January. I have never comitted to a fitness goal for this long; I usually tap out after three or four days. This time I learnt how to build meaning and purpose around my habits, instead of the sole purpose being because I hate my body. As my wise psychologist once said, "Why would you want to help something you hate?"
At chef school, you're taught something called "Mis en Place" which translates to "In its place". This is basically what Matt talks about in "changing your environment". Take an example; you want to eat a healthier breakfast. In the evening, after dinner, set up what is needed in order to make a wholesome morning meal. Smoothie? Put the fruit and grains on a cutting board so you minimise friction in the morning, where you are tired an less productive. Mis en Place is about looking into the future, and try to anticipate when you are low in willpower - usually for people, after school, after work or in the early morning. There is a great book called Good Habits, Bad Habits by Wendy Wood that talk more about this. Also the podcast Hidden Brain has just released a great podcast on habits with the author of this book. It's a great listen.
There's a magical moment when a habit becomes a behaviour. It just becomes part of who you are. (edit: unless it's a bad habit... that's far less magical...)
Franklandish, I never heard that before. I stopped and asked myself if this has happened in my life. It has. I had developed a habit of following the 'one in one out rule.' It is now part of my behavior. I do not have to think about it. It is more of a sense that it is time to purge because 3-4 things have come into my space. I am in the process of carrying that out, as I received gifts for Christmas. The other most recent habit that quite quickly became my behavior, was not eating butter. I was happily surprised that it was not as difficult as I expected it to be. I hope that my newest habit of daily walking will at some magical moment become my behavior. ( :
I’ve got diagnosed with depression about a year ago. I stared some therapy but isn’t working. Some doctors say the things that I have to do and just hear them make me feel down and tired. Seeing your videos is the opposite, when i hear your advices make me think “ I could do this or that”. I try to make it simple to make it less hard. Thanks for the videos, it actually help me to get some kind of routine.
FotosFlo Nikon, As one who has suffered from depression most of my life, I would like to offer a few things that have helped me. Tell that negative voice in your head is telling you what a loser you are or how things are bad and going to get worse 'YOU ARE A LIAR'. When you are so very down, that everything is too hard, go do 3 small things. Examples:- Take a shower, Brush your teeth, Open the mail and trash the ads, Put away 3 items of clothing that are sitting around, Drink a glass of water, Stretch your body, Step outside for 5 minutes. If you manage to do 3 things in that day, it is not a complete loss. You are taking care of yourself. You deserve the love and care you give yourself. Lastly, if you could get someone to visit you on a regular basis, that could help. Isolation is bad for us. P.S. Studies have shown that walking outside is just as ,or more effective than medications.
4:10 am right now, physics exam just 2 days away and I'll crush it. Hopefully. Edit: it's 6 in the morning now and I think I'll go get some sleep and thank you all for the kind words. Love you and take care. :)

Thank you Matt for this video. One piece I wanted to share here that works quite well, when creating a new habit is this: Whenever YOU want to change a behavior, YOU can simply ask YOURSELF: - How can You make it obvious? - How can You make it attractive? - How can You make it easy? - How can You make it satisfying? You are awesome!
I love the 2 day rule I have been implementing it into my life and it really has held me accountable at working out. I wasn't feeling the gym today but yesterday was my no gym day so I ended up going and shockingly ran the farthest I've ever run before! I was so proud of myself and it's such an easy rule to follow to keep you on track. Thank you Matt!!!! 😃
I am still trying to do the writing down .. but it helps .. I just need to be consistent with writing things down and ticking them off when I am done - it is so satisfying
Simply Wendy Write down the habits that you aim to maintain, write down the bad habits you wish to stop or write down the habits you want to establish?
theluschmaster yea cause you put the effort into writing things down and just marking them off idk it feels like you actually did the work rather then just seeing it disappear once it’s checked off , but you can do it !
I read an article from the New York Times in 2017 that said writing down your habits is more effective because you spend more time when you physically write something down. You're basically a genius. That's what I'm trying to say.
Hi Matt, I love your channel and your content! I found you recently, and your challenges of 2019 inspired me to do something similar for 2020. Some are inspired by yours, some maybe you'll want to explore as well! This year I am doing: -dry January (currently) -flossing every day for a month (should already be a habit, right? But come on, everyone slips on this one!) -meditating every day for a month -practicing/studying a different language every day for a month -no social media for a month -write every day (journal or blog post) for a month -get 8 hours of sleep every night for a month -practice my instrument every day for a month -draw/sketch something every day for a month -read 10 pages every day for a month -listen to a new song/piece of music every day for a month -work out every day for a month
I particularly love the 2 day rule! I appreciate the simplicity of it as I have in the past become too into the planning and then have been too overwhelmed by this monstrous, complex plan to even follow through with it. Also, as an Australian, thank you very much for the donations and even the acknowledgment of the fires happening!
I made a new year's resolution last January to get up at 4.30am every morning. First month was hard!!! Then instead of me getting up before work to edit/promote, I changed my shift pattern at work to start at 5am so I had no choice no but to get up. This has changed my life 👍 I started my own channel last week and I'm wishing you all a successful 2020 🍻😊
I love how you started with changing your environment! It seems so simple, but when you stop seeing all these cookies and sweets around you, you are less tempted to eat them! Thank you for going through this journey of trying out 12 habits for all of us to learn from.
Thanks, Matt, for remembering those Australians affected by fire, and our hardworking firefighters. We appreciate all the help that is coming from all over the world.
I've tried to quit sugar and caffeine for a long period , and I did it! I tried to commit eating fruit for breakfast for a month it was great! I try to minimize my stream to a 1 hour a day or 2 and I did it...now I watch only educational and increase productivity videos, I check my e-mails once a day. This is the things I try and could do them, 😊 Thank you
1.) Change the environment: Put reminders of your goals in a place where you will mostly see them. Prep if you need to make it easier. 2.) Accountability: have someone that can help you stay motivation with your goals, such as a gym partner. 3.) Use the 2 Day Rule: Do your goals for 2 days in a row & only skip one day in between, which gives you a chance to rest & take care of your mental health. PLEASE SUPPORT WITH THE FIRES IN AUSTRALIA!
The best part is after every month looking at the progress made from the month before and then that progress fuels you to keep going and it gets really fun and addicting after a while. Definitely the first 2 weeks to a month is the hardest part
Hey Matt, thanks for mentioning the fires here in your video! That's a very generous thing to do and we appreciate it, every little bit helps. The fires are absolutely devastating, so much wildlife and bushland has been lost, let alone damage to homes and businesses. We will persevere, as Aussies do, but it's the things like your donation that truly make a difference to us. Thank you, on behalf of all Aussies 👍
Most of us have the problem of absorbing too much knowledge and not taking enough action. It's when I realized that I was studying for one year and prepping that I realized that nothing was actually changing in my life... So I decided to work on the habit of taking action itself!
rewatched the video without adblock one more time with all ads to help out the australia situation. thank you for the chance to become a tiny part of it! love your videos!
Hey I really love and appreciate that you are donating to the fires in Australia, I’m from the mid north coast in New South Wales and it’s crazy that a guy from across the world is being so generous to people over here. Thankyou for being so kind ❤️
Very useful tips we can get from the video. Something that works for me that I learned from scientific reports was that there’s a much higher chance to stick our habits if we repeat it for 21 days in a row, it’s not a magic number but reaching it shows how disciplined you are. Consistency is the key!
One day rule: *realizes that yesterday he/she didn't go to the gym* Welp I broke my chain. Time to not do this ever again. Two day rule: *same thing occurs* I can go tomorrow therefore I will go tomorrow. Today is a treat.

But there are already so many fitness youtubers :D, check out someone like athlean-x and build your own. So for your own plan: 1.Follow the key rules 2.Choose what you want to accomplish 3.Choose 6-10 exercises that will help you to achieve that goal (watch videos/read for this) (my workout is general fitness/loosing weight, so far I lost 44pounds / around 2 pounds per week [a bit fast]) 4. look at which days you can and want to workout, choose at least 2 rest days 5. Now that you know the days/ times per week you can workout, you split the choosen/recommended exercises in possible training days (watch videos/read for this) 6. Follow the plan, note down how it works out (number of reps/time you need/ how much weight you used/ how much you weight) 7.After 2 months look if you need to change the exercises (more weight, other calisthenic movement, other exercise). 8.Success ----------------------------------------------------------------- It all depends on where you are and where you wanna go. Key rules are: -Consistency (better relaxed slow workout, with 2min rest between sets, than nothing// you need a workout plan that fits in your life) -Form (start slow with low weights/bodyweight and get the movements right, this can take much time) -You need the right nutrition plan, check out how much calories you body needs and look that you fill it up with enough minerals/vitamins/protein fill the rest with carbohydrates (if you need to loose weight look that you eat in intervals 3weeks caloric deficit + 1 week light surplus// look at your nutrition weekly, i eat less Mo-Fr and more on Sa and Su (going out living life)) -Take enough breaks to regenerate ----------------------------------------------------------------- For example my plan: I just do 4x the week strength training with many compound exercises and from Mo-Fr I do 2-4x Cardio, depending on my muscle soreness. A week would look like this. Mo=Strengh Training 1 + Cardio1 Tu=Strengh Training 2 + Cardio1 We=Break or Cardio 3 Th=Strengh Training 1 + Cardio 1 Fr=Strengh Training 2 + Cardio 3 Sa=Break / Take a Walk Su=Break / Take a Walk Strengh Training takes 40min to 1hour time, and consists of 3-4 exercises where i do 4 sets with a rep range of 8-15. (I split training 1 and 2 in push-day/pull-day). So on monday my training starts with Push-Ups. 10 reps push ups, 1-2min break ,next set,break,10,break,10 ->next exercise. Strengh Training 1 = Push-Up, Dips, DB Curl and Press, 10min AB workout Strengh Training 2 = Pull-Ups, Squats , Cross Body DB Curl , 10min lower back workout Cardio 1 = 4,2mile run Cardio 2 = 12mile bicycle ----------------------------------------------------------------- Excel tables are your friend :D (Sry for all misspelling, I'm no native speaker and i hate grammar xd)
1. Change your environment
2. Find accountability in someway

a note about “holding yourself accountable”:
i’d suggest instead of announcing your goal, you should stay quiet at first and announce it in the middle or during the end.
usually when you announce it before you’ve started, you gain that satisfaction from people and your brain tricks you into thinking that you’ve done something when you really didnt, and it makes you want to do it less.

Patricia Fisher , thank you very much for your sweet words ❤️ i will follow your advice, it totally worth it to do
4:10 am right now, physics exam just 2 days away and I'll crush it. Hopefully.
Edit: it's 6 in the morning now and I think I'll go get some sleep and thank you all for the kind words. Love you and take care. :)
all the best love!!
You got this!
Let's get it man!
It's ME I know you’re probably stressed, but make sure you get enough sleep in the next couple of days!
U got this, my friend light work!!
As an Australian living in America, so so so grateful to this video. Natalie was a refreshing accent to hear in a sea of American accents and my first thought was about the fires and how she may feel about them and then the end of the video came and I was like YES MAKING POSITIVE CHANGE W POSITIVE INFLUENCE
Winning is habit. unfortunately, so is losing - Vince Lombardi
Great quote
Sounds arrogant
If there's one thing I love about Matt is that he seems like the kind of guy who's perfect at everything, but he provides these videos to give us, the viewers, an in-depth look at just how he, like all of us, has his fair share of shortcomings. The relatable environment in Matt's content is the best thing he has to offer. Thank you, Matt.
when i saw the thumbnail, i thought you were sitting on the toilet
😂😂
Wait he's not! I thought so too!
Me too! I was also sitting on the toilet. lol
@armenian vory v zakone oh my bad, i'm gonna start shitting in my bed every night, so i can wash off the bullshit from the previous day every morning. thanks for the advice
@@JonJosephKuhn i think that's how a youtuber can really connect with their audience...you watching them on the toilet while you're on the toilet...such a beautiful moment
Thank you Matt for this video. One piece I wanted to share here that works quite well, when creating a new habit is this: Whenever YOU want to change a behavior, YOU can simply ask YOURSELF:
- How can You make it obvious?
- How can You make it attractive?
- How can You make it easy?
- How can You make it satisfying?
You are awesome!
Matt, you are changing people's lives with your content. You are so important and inspiring
I first read atomic habits and I realized writing down my habits and tracking them is a lot more effective then seeing them on my phone
GreyFolk I write the habits I want to get rid of and the good habits I’m trying to maintain .
Hi Matt, I love your channel and your content! I found you recently, and your challenges of 2019 inspired me to do something similar for 2020. Some are inspired by yours, some maybe you'll want to explore as well!
This year I am doing:
-dry January (currently)
-flossing every day for a month (should already be a habit, right? But come on, everyone slips on this one!)
-meditating every day for a month
-practicing/studying a different language every day for a month
-no social media for a month
-write every day (journal or blog post) for a month
-get 8 hours of sleep every night for a month
-practice my instrument every day for a month
-draw/sketch something every day for a month
-read 10 pages every day for a month
-listen to a new song/piece of music every day for a month
-work out every day for a month
I particularly love the 2 day rule! I appreciate the simplicity of it as I have in the past become too into the planning and then have been too overwhelmed by this monstrous, complex plan to even follow through with it.
Also, as an Australian, thank you very much for the donations and even the acknowledgment of the fires happening!
Watched this vid in the morning while sitting on my couch. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻 Just what I needed to get back on track. So thank you!
Good luck in 2020! Nice start to the channel 👍
Fair play! I couldn't do that... I love sleep too much 😂
I love how you started with changing your environment! It seems so simple, but when you stop seeing all these cookies and sweets around you, you are less tempted to eat them! Thank you for going through this journey of trying out 12 habits for all of us to learn from.
I love the absolute Chaotic Good energy of your drive through wedding.
Thanks, Matt, for remembering those Australians affected by fire, and our hardworking firefighters. We appreciate all the help that is coming from all over the world.
That '2 Day Rule' is one of the best things you introduced to me. Currently I'm practicing it and I can tell you, it works :)
I've tried to quit sugar and caffeine for a long period , and I did it!
I tried to commit eating fruit for breakfast for a month it was great!
I try to minimize my stream to a 1 hour a day or 2 and I did it...now I watch only educational and increase productivity videos,
I check my e-mails once a day.
This is the things I try and could do them, 😊
Thank you
1.) Change the environment: Put reminders of your goals in a place where you will mostly see them.
Thank you so much for mentioning and promising to donate to the australian bush fire relief effort. Appreciate your kindness.
I came here straight from the Trending page because I needed a sane palate cleanser. Thank you as always.
Thanks for supporting Aus, every little bit helps!
Thanks for giving Australia some love. You’re a good guy, Matt. 😊
The best part is after every month looking at the progress made from the month before and then that progress fuels you to keep going and it gets really fun and addicting after a while. Definitely the first 2 weeks to a month is the hardest part
I’m actually happy to see him put ads on his videos
I'm happy to even not skip them! He deserves the revenue.
"You need to control your environment, not yourself!" Damn! So true about many things
On a serious note, I never missed a video from this channel . That means I make it a thing to watch it when it’s uploaded
Im never gonna let my self down because of what you said
Matt: your past doesn’t define your future
Most of us have the problem of absorbing too much knowledge and not taking enough action.
It's when I realized that I was studying for one year and prepping that I realized that nothing was actually changing in my life...
So I decided to work on the habit of taking action itself!
Thank you for the 2 day rule!!!! It's changed me in 3 months
rewatched the video without adblock one more time with all ads to help out the australia situation. thank you for the chance to become a tiny part of it! love your videos!
Me being a total minimalist and having my day until a Mat D'Avella notification video pops up and I end up pausing my day for this video.
Same.
Thanks Matt! All donations help from everyone. As a country we have already raised millions thanks to the generosity of others.
I love how you’re donating the revenue of the video to Australia 👏🏻
“Until you take actions, you’re standing still” Thank you for this!
I’m journaling everyday this year, even when there’s nothing I can think of I just write what comes to my mind:)
Hey I really love and appreciate that you are donating to the fires in Australia, I’m from the mid north coast in New South Wales and it’s crazy that a guy from across the world is being so generous to people over here.
Thankyou for being so kind ❤️
Ever since I saw your finance video, whenever I see you eat a cookie I think "that cookie is a tax write off"
Thank you for the donations to Australia. It's really appreciated
You’re the reason I get up in the morning and exercise thank u 😄😄
Very useful tips we can get from the video. Something that works for me that I learned from scientific reports was that there’s a much higher chance to stick our habits if we repeat it for 21 days in a row, it’s not a magic number but reaching it shows how disciplined you are. Consistency is the key!
Matt: "I had one thing going for me"
Me: "Is it the blue eyes?"
I think it's the biceps.
Thank you! That message about the fires at the end was a really pleasant surprise. Very kind of you to help us!
One day rule: *realizes that yesterday he/she didn't go to the gym*
Welp I broke my chain. Time to not do this ever again.
Two day rule: *same thing occurs*
I can go tomorrow therefore I will go tomorrow. Today is a treat.
I think this is the first newsletter I actively purposefully consensually sign myself up to because I WANT to
RUclips : Has 37 comments
Me : I wanna read them
RUclips : well to bad you have to refresh first.

Hi Matt! Another bloke from Australia here, glad to see more people from around the world helping out in these bad times. Love your videos, keep it up!
9:15 This shot of Matt talking to his sister, followed by a shot of him kissing somebody (not his sister) gave me some serious Kuleshov Effect whiplash
Thanks for thinking of us in Australia. I think it's safe to say you are now an honorary Aussie.
1. Change your environment (
2:49)
2. Find accountability in someway (4:50)
3. The 2-day rule (8:32)
Thanks Matt, I’m in Melbourne, so not effected to much, just the smoke haze has been a little hard to deal with... nothing compared to the rest of the country! Great to see so much support for the areas that are struggling, from around the world! Xoxo
Love your videos BTW :)
I think it’d be cool to see how to build a gym routine when starting from scratch!
Yes! Although the hardest part in the beginning is just going. Lol
maybememories I definitely agree, I just don’t go because I don’t know what to do
Please do this! Maybe even a version for people who have to exercise from home.
Would love to know that lol, I keep quitting and it sucks.
But there are already so many fitness youtubers :D, check out someone like athlean-x and build your own.
So for your own plan:
1.Follow the key rules
2.Choose what you want to accomplish
3.Choose 6-10 exercises that will help you to achieve that goal (watch videos/read for this)
(my workout is general fitness/loosing weight, so far I lost 44pounds / around 2 pounds per week [a bit fast])
4. look at which days you can and want to workout, choose at least 2 rest days
5. Now that you know the days/ times per week you can workout, you split the choosen/recommended exercises in possible training days (watch videos/read for this)
6. Follow the plan, note down how it works out (number of reps/time you need/ how much weight you used/ how much you weight)
7.After 2 months look if you need to change the exercises (more weight, other calisthenic movement, other exercise).
8.Success
-----------------------------------------------------------------
It all depends on where you are and where you wanna go.
Key rules are:
-Consistency (better relaxed slow workout, with 2min rest between sets, than nothing// you need a workout plan that fits in your life)
-Form (start slow with low weights/bodyweight and get the movements right, this can take much time)
-You need the right nutrition plan, check out how much calories you body needs and look that you fill it up with enough minerals/vitamins/protein fill the rest with carbohydrates
(if you need to loose weight look that you eat in intervals 3weeks caloric deficit + 1 week light surplus// look at your nutrition weekly, i eat less Mo-Fr and more on Sa and Su (going out living life))
-Take enough breaks to regenerate
-----------------------------------------------------------------
For example my plan:
I just do 4x the week strength training with many compound exercises and from Mo-Fr I do 2-4x Cardio, depending on my muscle soreness.
A week would look like this.
Mo=Strengh Training 1 + Cardio1
Tu=Strengh Training 2 + Cardio1
We=Break or Cardio 3
Th=Strengh Training 1 + Cardio 1
Fr=Strengh Training 2 + Cardio 3
Sa=Break / Take a Walk
Su=Break / Take a Walk
Strengh Training takes 40min to 1hour time, and consists of 3-4 exercises where i do 4 sets with a rep range of 8-15. (I split training 1 and 2 in push-day/pull-day).
So on monday my training starts with Push-Ups. 10 reps push ups, 1-2min break ,next set,break,10,break,10 ->next exercise.
Strengh Training 1 = Push-Up, Dips, DB Curl and Press, 10min AB workout
Strengh Training 2 = Pull-Ups, Squats , Cross Body DB Curl , 10min lower back workout
Cardio 1 = 4,2mile run
Cardio 2 = 12mile bicycle
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Excel tables are your friend :D
(Sry for all misspelling, I'm no native speaker and i hate grammar xd)
I’m a fan from Melbourne and now an even bigger fan after your bushfire incentive. Thanks a million for your help.
