      I had a gym teacher that would yell at you if he caught you walking when you were supposed to be running. Every so often I'd see a fellow classmate stop to walk behind the bleachers where he couldn't see them, and once they'd popped out the other side he'd start shouting. I didn't dare walk. Perhaps he wasn't alone and that our gym teachers put that mentality in our minds that walking was bad ? Just putting things together here 20-some years later haha!

But I can’t go long distances anymore and I get so discouraged when I try the “couch to 5k” and I struggle even with that. This has so encouraged me to go out there with that mindset instead of sticking to a plan someone else made!

    • @kcricket39
      @kcricket39 4 года назад +1

      @@sg-qu5mh I'm a half marathoner as well. The rule I've always heard for increasing mileage is don't increase more that 10% per week. When I was training for my first half, I increased every other week by 10% for my long runs. As far as socks and shoes, take your time and rotate new with old ones until you're sure the new ones are good to go. For me personally, finding good socks was a game changer. The first time I tried my favorite socks, the run felt different in a really good way. Of course, Nike no longer makes those socks, but I've found others (Balega) I like just as well.

    • @womanofacertainage5892
      @womanofacertainage5892 4 года назад +1

      @@sg-qu5mh I've run 20 halfs and one full marathon. My shoe advice is if you need to "break in" shoes, they are the wrong shoes. Go to a good running shoe store and have them "fit" you.
      I agree that socks are critical - especially for longer distances. I prefer the wool (yes wool!, even in summer it's cooler and dryer) Smartwool brand brothers that have a high merino wool content. I also put vaseline all over my toes and feet, or Body Glide, some anti-chafe stuff, in summer, for longer distances and I've only ever had a couple of blisters.

    • @maryjojaggar9254

    This is ridiculous, but I would get self-conscious about going into a walk when I got winded when I would see other runners. I would have to start telling myself that they have no idea how far I’ve run. Even if I’ve only gone 3/4 of a mile or whatever, they haven’t been following me. For all they know I could be in mile 6.
    Of course they also probably don’t care about what I’m doing at all, but that’s just something that has gotten me down before.
    EDIT: wow. If I had listened for 30 more seconds, I would have heard Jessica say this exact thing. 😂

      I’ve been running a long time, and let me tell you, runners are an awesome community. We want to see other runners out there! And if they saw you, they probably were thinking positive thoughts towards you, not negative! I always give a little wave and smile when I pass runners. If you ever do a race, you’ll see the positivity on full display! We are all just cheering on each other wherever we are at!

    • @kcricket39
      @kcricket39 4 года назад +3

      Anyone who really loves the running community doesn't give a flying flip about how fast you're going or if you're walking. Walk-run intervals are a huge thing, and most experienced runners know at least one person that races that way. I've finished 4 half marathons using intervals. It's a great method if you have joint or breathing issues (like asthma).

      When I see other runners it makes me happy to see them. And I feel proud of them for being out there because I know how hard running is. It takes a lot just to get out to run let alone running for miles. Just know that all of those thoughts are from the enemy trying to keep you down. Nobody is ever thinking those kinds of things about anyone that's running.

    I LOVE everything that you shared! -- one tip I would share is to hydrate the day before you run! Hydration is SO important, especially if you get crampy! I got into running in a time in my life where there was a lot going on and I had nothing for myself. It seems dramatic to say but running literally changed my life. It was / is my 'me' time, my therapy, my time to de-stress, etc. It makes me a better person. lol I went from literally never running - NEVER - to signing up for a half marathon because I needed to do something for myself! I trained for three months and ran my half marathon faster than I ever thought I would! Just over two hours - since then I've ran so much more, even ran a full marathon, and my times have gotten better... and worse during my postpartum times... but anyway! I just wanted to comment to let people know that running is so much more than losing weight, or getting fit! It's so powerful & your body will thank you!

    I think the biggest takeaway is to not compare yourself to others. Yes, when I started watching this video I did the 🙄. Jess is petite and fit so my initial reaction was “well, of course it’s easy for her to say...”. But I stopped that mindset and kept watching because like she said, everyone has to start somewhere, right?
    My sister had her 3rd baby 6 months ago and she’s back to running 9 min miles. Meanwhile, I’ve never had kids and my current pace is 11:50. I was a decent runner a few years ago but injuries prevailed and I stopped. Now I’m trying again. I have 20+ lbs to lose and I get discouraged daily - but I have to keep fighting and working towards my goals.
    In a world where we are constantly pitted against each other and compared constantly, I have to keep reminding myself that I’m unique, I’m different and I’ll get there ❤️

    • @kcricket39
      @kcricket39 4 года назад +1

      Hey you're faster than me, and I don't have kids either! I've run half marathons and walked during every si glee kne of them. My best race pace ever was 12:54 a mile. I've run a 5k with less than 11:30 minute miles once, and they almost had to call an ambulance for me after because I was dizzy and nauseated and almost passed out. I have accepted that being a "fast" runner is just not in my wheelhouse, and I'm ok with it. I have the same finisher medals the people who run 8 minute miles get. :)

    From someone who was incredibly athletic all her youth, then got pregnant out of high school, got diagnosed with mental illnesses, gained more weight/lost motivation than I had ever, and now 10-12 years later getting all that back slowly: THIS VIDEO IS GOLD. SO RELATABLE ❤
    Also, MORE TIPS!
    1. I find that sometimes "tracking" my run goes better when I do it by blocks or land points. Ex: my house > daughters school is 1 mile roundtrip but I don't tell myself that at the beginning, I'll say "okay, to the school" it's a breeze and I usually end up going farther and I'll let the app keep track of me from there.
    2. Finding your running style and breathing techniques! This is so underrated/misunderstood. I come from having a background in athletic training, etc, so this is something that's built-in for me. Now if it's not (totally normal) you may not have this down right away and that's okay! But make sure you're doing a little research or getting advise from a trainer, doctor, etc. so you're not putting yourself at risk for injury. As you go, you'll find your stride and it WILL become easier.
    3. Find your time during the day/night you change to your workout gear to "make" yourself the most motivated. I find that as soon as the afternoon hits, I'm changing so I "know" I'm going to go. Or if I have a morning workout before work, I change as soon as I'm up and I dont even go back in the house after school drop-off, I go right away to keep myself hyped up.
    4. DONT GET CAUGHT UP IN VERBIAGE. A walk/jog/run/sprint is all CARDIO. Heart health! Lung health! All of it counts! If you say "I'm going for a run" that can mean so many different things but they all are great forms of exercise! Don't get too mentally into it!
    Gosh I hope these help. WE ARE ALL AWESOME!

    I actually relate to the mindset of “if they see me walking they’re going to think I’m weak.” I typically can run for about 3-5 minutes and have to walk for a minute to catch my breath and I ALWAYS used to think people would think I’m slacking by stopping to walk. It's been so nice to have an excuse to get out of the house. even now, I live right next door to a state park, so I can go running on the trail there when it's not freezing. Karen Phillips I had a therapist that told me that physical exercise was crucial to my happiness, and to think of it like brushing my teeth. Every day you brush your teeth, whether you like it or not, and so I just thought of running as something I had to do for my health. So even on vacation, I’ll get up before everyone and run/walk because it’s now something I need to do to feel healthy and happy. Idk if that makes sense, she made it sound way better haha I hope you’re able to find the motivation that suits you though!!! ☺️

    I do the same trick of running half the distance away from my house! Lol! It does work! Either way you have to get home. Running home is faster than walking! 🤣

    Great video!! I so wish I could run but a foot problem won’t let me. My husband is a long time runner; he’s run over 50 marathons. Three years ago this month, he started feeling strange when he would run...took himself to the doctor...during his stress test the doc turned off the machine and told him to go to the ER immediately. He ended up having quintuple bypass surgery. After all his running and eating pretty well, he has heart disease...it’s genetic for him. He is back to running and doing great! You have to listen to your body and if it’s not feeling right, go to the doctor! Keep running, Jess!!

I haven’t missed a set workout since that mind switch!

I would never have thought to try either of those. Thank you so much for sharing your tips.

    hi Jess. i found this video so helpful and motivational. Going to go out and start running again! I listed the tips for everyone else to see again/quick access:
    1. doesn't matter your background or where your'e starting from - JUST START
    2. WHY
    3. MEET YOURSELF WHERE YOU ARE (dont compare yourself to others; 1 mile is better than 0; doesn't matter how fast)
    4. run, then walk, then run again (worry less, no one cares)
    5. figure out what works for you
    6. add a tiny bit each time
    7. just get dressed, go out, and get started
    8. make a killer playlist
    9. invest in YOUR gear (what's comfortable for you/don't have to break the bank but if necessary do it)
    10. find an app that works for you

    I literally came downstairs to hit the treadmill for my run today and there’s Jess with a whole video about tips for getting your run on. Girl, yes! This spoke to me. I swear, getting my shoes on and getting that first step out the door is the hardest part. I heard someone say once, “you never regret the runs you do. But you regret the ones you skip.” That is so true for me. So sometimes when I’m not feeling it, I say to myself, “okay Kim, then just go out and run a mile.” That can get me started. And oftentimes, I’ll keep going and go further than that or even finish all the miles I had for my original goal. And I also tell myself that I can walk if I need to, just don’t stop moving. That helps me too.
    Thanks for the motivation on the dreadmill today 😊

    You are speaking all the truths! I was an athlete but hated HATED running. Now 10 years later I’ve been running 5-8 miles daily and it was because of many of the tips you’ve given. Motivation, not caring about others opinion of you and a great app have changed how I run. I’ve come to find that more people are excited for my run than I ever thought possible.

    Yes, do NOT compare yourself to others. I’ve been running for 25 years and have run a lot of marathons and ultras. When people say, “Well I only run 5k’s” and I’m always telling them that I started by running around the block and I did that for a long time. Plus, there aren’t really any rules to how far or how fast you run. These were great tips! Great job!

    I love the idea of making distance more achievable by just cutting it in half. Going halfway then back makes so much more sense to me! And the tip, "run until you have to walk and then walk until you can run again" is such a simple and obvious tip but hearing it out loud makes running in general sound so much more approachable than before. I'm going to try running next week once the parks around me open up again! Thanks Jessica!

    Great tips! I grew up thinking running was sheer torture, picked it up after college and LOVED it, ran a half and 2 marathons, went through some life changes where I fell out of the habit for the past couple of years. Part of me has really wanted to pick it back up and this video might be the sign I needed.
    Also very much agree on the out and back course! If the first half is going really well, you start thinking oh I could do xx number of miles more, which seems like not that much but then you're half way out and don't have much choice but to have to run that distance back. So that extra like 0.25 miles on the way out doubles into a whole extra half mile on your total run.

    This is basically everything I would have said if someone asked me how I stick to running! Also, I've never bought Lululemon gear, but I have similar frustration with Old Navy and Target leggings. I've discovered two brands on Amazon that have become my go-to for running leggings & shorts: Velocity Active and 90 Degree by Reflex. As affordable as Old Navy but they don't budge during my runs!! And they don't show major sweat and are "squat proof" (aka not see through when you bend over).

    From the high arch shoes (Nike Pegasus), the higher waisted and more expensive leggings, the feeling that people around are judging you (which they aren't), the running apps and the playlist, the "let's add a little more and run home" = It is amazing how every single thing you said in this video was exactly what I've learned from running the past few months. How is that possible? I literally 100% agree and it's always great to hear those points again.

    I love this! I am a runner myself and run for my college. It makes my heart so happy when people enjoy running because most people just think I'm crazy for loving it. It's not only beneficial for health, but it's just so therapeutic. It's my time where I can zone in and really escape. Something that really worked for me was starting a running streak if you can, even if it's just running a mile a day. I found that I was less likely to break my streak when I was in a routine and incorporated running into my everyday schedule. Thanks for this video and being encouraging:) This is why I love the running community so much (just another bonus of running)!!

    The “switch” for me was the fact that my cholesterol was high, but the rest of my levels are normal. But due to the fact that my father had a history of heart issues (he eventually passed from congestive heart failure) my doctor didn’t want to put me on medicine because, as she stated “you are too young to be on medicine so I think its due to genetics”. Man, hearing that changed it for me. Now I watch what I eat, take a vitamin regime, and I run when I can. I did a 5K at the end of February but with the whole Covid-19 situation, and our work had to make changes quickly to work remotely, I was exhausted coming home from those preparations. Now I’m comfortable at home, and I invested in a treadmill, and working my way up to a jog. Will get my running legs soon enough.

    I’ve wanted to run for a few years now after having a few health issues. I used to be a sprinter in my younger years so never thought I could run long distance. However, I’ve recently started the couch to 5k app and I’m doing it!! I also have the issue that I’m so self conscious that I’m walking or maybe I just look like an idiot with my running style. But I’ve found a quiet little field by my house and do some laps. I came back to this video as I’d remembered it, and it was nice to listen to again. I was actually listening to the trainers as I remember high arches and you had the Nike Pegasus. I’ve decided after a certain amount of weeks that I will treat myself to a better pair of running shoes. My motivation is fitness and weight loss and I’m an introvert. After having my son, I barely get time on my own so it’s a lovely break. So although I’m barely running distance or doing it very speedily right now... I’m doing it and I’m so proud of myself. Just take that first step. X

    Thank you Jessica! I’m not athletic at all but I’m a Beachbody member and while I love it, I’ve always wanted to try running. A few years ago after just a routine wellness visit, my dr wanted to find out what was causing my consistent cough. After a catscan showed some nodules on my lung after a year of monitoring, I needed surgery to remove. It turned out I had lung cancer and I never smoked in my life. After that, I kind of set a secret goal for myself and try to take up running. I felt the same way as you were saying, people would be watching me - hilarious who would really care is right! I’m going to try and start slow doing a walk/run. Although I work out every day, I can tell the difference after my surgery so I’ll go one day at a time. Thank you again!
