    As someone who works with college freshmen-I AM BEGGING you to allow your children to fail, experience natural consequences, to not have everything go their way. Don't bail them out all the time. You are doing more harm than good, I promise. We're dealing with a generation of kids who have rarely been told no, who don't have to have responsibilities (one parent truly asked if the dorms had a maid service), have never failed b/c mom or dad bails them out. They come to college and they can't make decisions for themselves. They can't talk to their professors or schedule appointments because their mom has done it. I get it. I have an 18 and a 15 yr old...The desire to be the hero and swoop in and help is strong. Wanting to do those things to somehow keep them young, in your mind, is strong. But trust me...they are becoming adults who are just not able to adult. Let them have growing pains. They lack the resiliency they desperately need.

      Yes!!! My daughter is 24 & we actively made an effort to allow her to fail & experience negative consequences & even with all that we did, we feel like it was not enough. These children are soft, in a way that is concerning because, at some point, you'll experience some form of adversity & you need to be able to cope, learn from it & move forward.

      I'm an advisor to a chapter of my sorority at a small liberal arts college, and these young women BAFFLE me. They are mostly raised in affluent, primarily upper class families, and they just don't know how to do anything for themselves without asking the "adults" for help. Several of us advisors were talking one day, and we all agreed that we would not hire any of the graduating seniors that year because they had no problem solving or critical thinking skills.

    • @betsybabf748
      @betsybabf748 4 месяца назад +1

      This is so very true, and so many parents have harmed their now young adult children. The effects are so clear. Too many are incompetent, have no critical thinking skills and don't have any of the skills and mentality to transition into adulthood, but then, at the same time, they think they are saving the world because they made a social media comment. It not only hurts the child into their own adulthood, but it is hurting all of society as whole and will continue to do so unfortunately.

      @@a.beaverhausen1140 yes! It is very concerning. Every year students come in more disrespectful, less prepared, and just very lost as to how to do anything w/o an adult there to tell them every choice to make. BUT when we give legit advice, like don’t hang w/ that person, these friends are no good, don’t dive head first here w this boy-we’re the dumbest humans alive 🤣

    In response to your conversation about responding to tantrums… I LOVE that you are a parent who actually understands that children NEED boundaries! As someone who has worked in childcare for over 15 years, I have seen WAY too many children who have not been taught that at home and it makes it so much harder for them.
    While I have tons of childcare experience, I have no children myself. So I never criticize parents or try to give advice unless I am asked directly for it. Plus, I always explain that I don’t have children and my advice simply comes from my years of experience working with children which I know is different than parenting.

    Jess, I've been watching you guys for so long (from when you first started dating) that ya'll are almost like family members in our house! 😀Our kids have grown up watching you. My husband sometimes forgets that I'm talking about you and Tyler and thinks I'm referring to somebody else we know in Florida. Me: "Jess was saying that this recipe was really easy so that's what we're trying this week, etc. " And "Tyler recommended this book and I went ahead and got it for you." Also, whenever I am a nervous wreck about something, I grab a coffee and come sit down for a moment to decompress with you because you are my kind of people. Genuine, sincere, family oriented, and honest. You are literally the most down to earth RUclipsr I've ever seen, and I really do appreciate your content. 🦋 Thank you!

    The “Gentle Parenting” style is very much about being responsive and not reactive to your kids. I use some of the ideas but I also agree that there are certain things that over talking about doesn’t help and a simple “No” is appropriate. Parenting is hard no matter how you do it. Just trying to raise my daughter to be a kind, healthy human 🥰

    I raised my 2 sons as a single parent. One of my favorite quotes in raising them was "If it will matter five years from now, then it matters now". That especially helped when they got a little older and until they turned 18 and had to make a life decision (with my help of course). And being consistent is crucial when they are young. Kids crave consistency even when they are trying to get their way. It's comforting for them to know what to expect at any age, even if "All their friends get to (fill-in-the-blank)". I had to be a very strict parent raising sons on my own. These are the rules and these are the consequences of you break the rules. Both my sons are grown with families of their own. They are both still very protective of me. They even both use sayings that I used on them to their own kiddos. Funny how that all works out right? lol 💜💙💚💛🧡

    I graduated as an Optometrist and few years in of working felt that life was stagnant and time was flying by. I have random bouts of wanting to paint, and one time I didn’t have the time needed to finish a full oil painting so I found my sister’s eyeshadow palette and started playing around with colours. That was such a moment for me where I realised I could express my creative needs and it doesn’t have to take weeks to complete! In the end I fell in love with the art of makeup so much that I did a course to become a better and qualified makeup artist. Fast forward a few more years of now working as both an optometrist and makeup artist and long story short I’m now also a qualified regression hypnotherapist. My day can be very routine and a mix of surprises. The routine comes from doing the necessary things everyday as a mum and attending to my optometry clinic, but interspersed through the week I’ll have clients for therapy. I take on only last minute makeup clients so that is always a surprise for me. So no week is the same and it’s such a great thing coz now they don’t just all blend into 1.

    a time out always seems like the best way, or removing yourself from a meltdown, but it’s akin to saying to them, “i’m not going to be around for the tough times in your life and you need to deal with it yourself.” i gave my daughter time outs and now i really regret it bc, as a teen, she doesn’t believe i’ll be there or understand when she has a problem. and i hate that she thinks that bc we’re so close in every other way but she won’t open up when she really wants and needs the help. and this isn’t just me saying this. i’ve read quite a lot about it. i do believe gentle parenting is the best way bc it’s what i started doing at a certain point years ago and my relationship with my kid has changed so drastically for the better ever since i changed my ways. that doesn’t mean she doesn’t hear “no” or that she doesn’t have consequences, but it’s all in a way that makes sense. like you said, the consequence for not cleaning her room is cleaning her room. but to take away a date for the weekend bc one test came back with a C, that’s makes no sense. there has to be a correlation. usually it’s screen time that causes the bad grade, so a laptop and ipad and all are taken away as a consequence that makes sense to everyone. unless spending time with said date is what caused the lack of studying and the following C on the test. then maybe time away from that person makes sense. i’ve just never understood parents who say, “well now you can’t do this bc this happened,” when it doesn’t correlate. i’ve been a single mom for 19 years and, believe me, i’ve tried every way of parenting possible. these things are just part of what i’ve come up with that works. just my experience and what i’ve seen and watched and read up on.

      This reminds me of a story I've heard from my parents about one time when I was a toddler having a meltdown in a supermarket. My mum was embarassed because people were staring, but my dad just sat down on the floor and sat with me until I calmed down. As a teen and now as an adult, I'm closer to my dad and always felt like he understood my needs better.
      Side note: a C is still a pass, and grades aren't everything, so I'm not sure it's worth punishing a kid for getting a C. If they've always gotten As and getting a C is a new thing, there's probably something going on beyond too much screen time or getting distracted by relationships (e.g. depression and/or anxiety, not coping with stress, struggling with the teacher's teaching methods, classmates being bullies, etc). If that's the case, they might not want to talk to you specifically, but they'll still need you to be part of their support network. They'll need a hug and to feel supported, not to be told that a pass isn't enough.

    I personally have been subscribed to the same channels for years. I don’t watch or subscribe to TikTok, I don’t watch any shorts, and I tend to watch the longer videos multiple times because it’s truly like a daily visit with a friend.
    Thanks for keeping the long videos and for sharing your thoughts and life with us.

    I found your channel last December because I searched for channels with Vlogmas videos and yours was one of the first ones it showed. Then I seen all of the travel videos, including Disney World so I continued watching that channel but then heard about your personal channel and so I’ve been following since. I so binged watched the travel videos. We went on a wish trip in 2002 to Disney World. Since then we have tried to plan a trip down there again but it’s never worked out so it’s nice to watch those type of videos. I love the idea of travel so of course I enjoy watching all of the other travel videos you guys have!

    I think of your channel as comforting, relatable, safe space and thorough. There are too many channels that are over the top, lying about products, portraying a false lifestyle. I have unsubscribed to so many, you may have noticed the trend happening where influencers are calling out the over the top channels. I started noticing this last year, it has increased, talking about over consumption, tricks/key phrases used by influencers to convince the viewer that they absolutely need certain products, "run don't walk" and buy these products kinds of videos. The "you're doing your makeup wrong" and "you look old if you do this" videos. I felt it a couple years ago with some influencers, I didn't feel good or relaxed after watching their videos, they were somehow different. It's frustrating because once I noticed the tricks/key phrases they use, I can't watch them with the same kind of relaxing mind set. Thank you for being real Jessica, I do feel you are one of rare content creators that I can relax and watch.

    Hi Jessica😊! I know you may not see this, but I'm a long time subscriber, & very new to making videos. I do nail stamping/reverse stamping as a hobby, (not a professional). I am on a journey of finding myself, as I was a SAHM, & my kids are now young adults. I'm glad you mentioned the sub count, as I have alot to learn, & thought that was what made your "success" level. My views don't seem to line up with my sub count, as my views seem to be more than what my sub count is. Anyways, I do it bc I enjoy it😊. I'm not making money from YT at this time, I honestly don't even know how to yet. I do get some ads at the beginning of some videos, but I guess that since I'm still new I won't make anything from it for a bit. However, I also don't want it to become stressful, as it brings me much needed joy at this time in my life. I also do NOT, understand the whole algorithm thing, way over my head. All this, to say Thank You for explaining it! Love your family friendly channel, love you, & your family, (extended as well). Love seeing your parents🤍 & Blue Nana💙 when they visit. You're one of my top fav YT'ers!! Actually sub'ed to you from watching Taylor😁. Have a Blessed Day 🫶!!

    I first stumbled on some of your older videos in the makeup realm. Then started binging and was watching newer vids and older. I've been hooked for 2 years. You are my Number #1 RUclips Influencer.
    I don't always agree with everything you say, but for the most part you are my online Bestie and I adore your channel.
    You are my daughter's age and I find it intriguing to hear your thoughts and insights. She shares but there's boundaries and the level of sharing you do intrigues me. It helps me to have more insight into what my daughter might be feeling as she is parenting our only granddaughter.
    I love the fact that you bring your Christianity to the table and out in the open. I wish you would do that more. I hope to see you do that in the future. I would also enjoy seeing more growth from you in that area on your channel. Don't be afraid of it!
    My husband and I used to live in Indiana for 3 years and so I have that in common with you too.

    As a mom of a child with autism spectrum disorder, we absolutely HAVE to keep a middle ground between gentle and hard parenting. Our younger kiddo has felt like she gets things harder lately, and luckily she is at the age now that we can sit her down and explain the why as to how she might feel she is being treated differently. It's a rough time for sure, but she is absolutely brilliant and can see the difference between the way she can comprehend things over her brother. She often times will gentle parent him along side us anymore. The tantrum thing you said is beyond spot on with what we have to do with our oldest. His ASD often leaves him feeling overwhelmed and he cannot function until he gets his emotions out. Unfortunately, the public school we send them both to doesn't understand that concept and has forced him to comply or be punished. His IEP now states no group work unless a separate room is available for his group after MANY meltdowns last year resulting in others being harmed. It is so frustrating when people do not know how you actually have to be with a little person who does *NOT* understand what they are doing is wrong because of the way their special brain works. It breaks my heart some days, but I have faith that we will oversome this obstacle and get things figured out this year. His teacher this year fortunately has siblings who are on the spectrum so he actually knows how to handle things. I truly believe God sent this new teacher our way to make it through as well! 🙌🏼

    Jess, I agree with you on the parenting. There are times that you really have to be firm, doesn't mean you are a mean parent. The statement "you have to be a parent" really is something that seems to be quite forgottten nowadays.

    Here's the thing about disregarding the opinions of people without kids; just because they don't have any doesn't mean they don't see and understand the child's behaviour. And if they don't get a say in how your child behaves when they're with them and especially towards them, you and your children stop getting invited into their lives. Just another perspective.

    • @hanamediocre
      @hanamediocre 4 месяца назад +21

      very true. especially learning about your own childhood trauma, you understand how the way you were parented affects you still to this day. and then learning how to be a better person and unlearning that harmful behaviour for your (possible) future kids so it doesn’t get passed down. we were all kids once

      @cassierobertson6157 4 месяца назад +30

      Yeah childless adults still have a valuable perspective on parenting, even if it’s untested and has its limits. But it’s also not helpful to take the stance of knowing better than our parent peers without valuing their perspective and experience. Maybe we can both be open to understanding the other without feeling threatened, though that can be hard to do and takes a lot of practice!

    • @caityjayde96
      @caityjayde96 4 месяца назад +21

      Absolutely, not being a parent does not automatically disqualify you from being able to give parenting advice (just like being a parent also doesn't automatically qualify you to give parenting advice). With some things, lived experience is more important than whether or not somebody is a parent, such as disabilities, health conditions, people whose parents were controlling or overly strict or invaded privacy or disrespected boudaries or exhibited other harmful behaviours, etc. If the non-parent adult has lived experience with whatever the kid is going through, their insight and advice will be way more valuable than anything that a parent who hasn't experienced it can offer.

You're from the midwest like me, still hold midwestern values, and quirks. Obviously when you were teaching you were relatable in that you had a 9-5 but even now, you've maintained that feeling. It's honestly a really hard thing to find someone so "down to earth" on here! That's not really brand advice but maybe it helps get you closer!
