this has to be the absolute best photography review video on youtube, finally someone does it the right way, both the content and the video quality are superb. Thank you for taking the time and sharing this gem.
This is the first professional, beautiful and inspiring movie that talks about Hasselblad 907X CFC 50C II. Thank you, Ian. Thank you Paula and Linhofstudio.
So refreshing to see and ACTUAL photographer with ACTUAL experience talking about gear and photography. So tired of seeing all of these kids channels, with a Sony, teaching you how to take photos and "secrets" of taking great photos etc LOL... . THANK YOU hope you make more videos.
Thank god I found this. This is possibly the single best camera review I have ever seen. I had almost written off this camera but now I see that what other reviewers were saying was, essentially, “it’s not my DSLR” (or mirror less same same equivalent). I don’t want a DSLR. I’ve got a perfectly ordinary Nikon. I want something that makes me learn and makes me think.
Thanks Ian a lovely thoughtful comparison and a refreshing break from the usual YT reviews. Really wanted to see how this would work on the V series Haselblads. Now you’ve opened my horizons to Rodenstock lenses as well!!
Easily the best review of this camera available. I was particularly delighted in relating the performance to a print. I can’t see the point in photography without printing. I so want one.
Just wanted to say thank you, you have given the best review of this camera that I have found on the net so far. I am purely and amateur photographer that like every one else has gone thru so much gear over the so many years. I am at a stage ware I am going to sell every thing other than my Rollieflex. I am going to invest in this camera and will have it for to see me out. you have helped my with this decision. I will continue to follow you.Lee Copas
The best review i have seen on the 907x, thank you every so much. I got mine 4 weeks ago and am enjoying the journey. still have a problem with the back on 503cw . i will need to send it in for adjusting. thank you once again!!
That is very kind. I really enjoyed using it so you must be very happy. I think Linhof and Studio have a really good servicing guy, so I would recommend them, if you are in the UK. He does all of my mechanical repairs and servicing.
What is your problem on the 503cw - just focus issues? Have you tried digital zoom focus on the back? Changes the workflow, but I have not seen a detailed walk through of the differences.
KWC Coin good point, so in “live view” I understand a rolling shutter effect happens as the scene is constantly scanned/refreshed. So would compose & focus in live view, then switch to WLF view to watch and wait to capture the ‘decisive moment’ to trip the shutter. I would still love to see someone walk through this process in a video!
@@bthemedia It's quite simple, set the camera to B open the shutter and hold the shutter open (either with a cable release or finger) switch to live view, compose, focus 100% and release the shutter, switch from live view. With a V system camera you are more likely to use Mechanical shutter unless of course you keep the shutter open manually. I think you can see me doing this around 9.47 in the video.
Beautifully done in every respect. Would be great to see Ian doing some further videos - perhaps another shoot where he talks about what he is looking for and the choices he makes and why.
Watched the video the second time still found it most informative and enjoyed to watch. Great to see a professional photographer sharing his experience. Love to see more.
A terrific review and comparison with three different cameras, and one Digital back. I also enjoyed seeing the images printed in full size. With my X1D II, I printed several full resolution prints earlier this year, just to see what they would look like. I also used the XPAN in camera crop to get a "panorama" view.
Great review. I especially loved the direct comparison between the 3 different lenses--very insightful! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.
Brilliant, the sort of review that one can only summise about, but this is done in real time with real equipement. Interesting how well the 500 series did so well with a lens not designed for digital. I would love a 907X. Bravo Ian. Lets see some more content.
Ian! He used to lecture me on my photography course at Barking college London between 2007-9. What a lovely surprise to see him come up on my research on this camera! Amazing review and very comprehensive, just like his teaching was! :)
Thanks, not enough discussion on how cameras and lenses render on print, all seems to get lost in edge sharpness these days. Glad you liked it. Cheers Ian
Wonderfull review. The re is a loro fa people teaching in web but a lot of them are only “product influencer “ this is a real review by someone Who know the work!!!!

Many thanks for your kind comments. We would all love the time to produce more like this but sadly it may well be one of the only advantages of the last years events that gave us the time to do it !
Dear Jan, I am very late to the party, but I want to extend you a great THANK for your remarkable review. I was on the verge of buying a 907X 50C to be mainly used with my V system Hasselblad cameras, but I was really unable to understand, from the many subjectives reviews published on the net, what to really expect from this combination. Your work offers both technically informative and professionally presented point of views, and it exudates your real experience as a photographer. It was tremendously useful to me. Thanks again.
Excellent job, Ian! A quality presentation. Well done! I've been thinking about buying a Hasselblad recently from the (excellent) Linhoff Studios in Southend, and this has proved very timely. Class content!
This was fascinating! It was great to see photos made with those two cameras that I have never had any experience with. I have found that the X1D-II body with native XCD lenses give the best resolution of fine detail close to wide open. At f/16 they are way softer than at f/4 or f/5.6. Something to experiment with if you still have the camera. Also, this was a terrific first review video. Keep them coming if you enjoy making these!
I only did a small test of the XCD lenses and I don't have the camera to test now. All lenses have issues with diffraction towards the smaller apertures. I find most digital lenses work best at around f8/f11. Wide open will often have a slight softening towards the edges depending on the quality of the glass, but I don't always see this as a major disadvantage, unless shooting landscapes and who shoots landscapes wide open?
Very kind thanks Ian. I'd like to do more but it was a lot of work, both in shooting and editing. It would also need to be the right kit. Thanks again, Ian
@@ianatkinson6367 Thank you for the reply. I bought a CFV 16 many years ago - my most expensive single photography purchase. I was somewhat disappointed with the performance first of all, suspecting that it was not focussing on the sensor properly but assumed it was me. I took advantage of a Hasselblad 'offer' to get my camera equipment checked out resulting in extra cost due to a scratch on the sensor (no idea how that happened) and lenses needing to be serviced. It was touch-and-go whether I would sell off the equipment and cut my losses but I decided to go for the service and restore my equipment. In another check-up I found that my sensor had mound growing underneath the filter - once again no idea how that happened. When I retired I hoped to be able to buy a CFV 50 back but my lump sum did not come through while they were on offer, and then they were discontinued! Hoping to cash in on a further injection of cash following my wife's retirement I was hoping to get the 'new' back but that took so long to come out that I have spent the money elsewhere. I looked at the X-Series when it came out and was tempted but I have so much invested in Canon and Panasonic digital systems that it did not make sense. The reviews I have seen of the 907X 50C (including yours) have once again piqued my interest. Maybe one day! Best Wishes for a Happy Christmas (whatever you are able to do) and a Safe New Year.
@@iangillett1817 It sounds like you have been on quite a journey. There was a bit in the film which I cut short where I talk about cutting out the last 10 years of digital purchases. I have no doubt if I was not in the same position as yourself that I would definitely buy in to this system and would love to still own my original Linhof Technikardan and Hasselblad system. Good luck with whatever you decide and hope you too have a good Christmas. best Ian
thanks for doing such a detailed review, I trained on 503's with film and digital backs 15-20 years ago and always loved the transparencies the 503 camera and lenses made on 2 1/4. I primarily work as a cinematographer now and have been considering this camera for my still image work and was curious how this back/camera would perform across the different Hasselbads and lenses I'm considering so it was nice to see this demonstration from in the field to an actual print. I really enjoyed your personal photographs in the beginning as well. I tried the fuji gfx system and liked it but the 50r didn't feel different enough from the full-frame digital cameras I have to warrant the cost so maybe it's time to try this camera!
Good idea, if I remember correctly they are similar sensor sizes. I think you will notice a huge jump in usability and an increase in iso range. I used a p45+ on a 503 and made some wonderful work but it wasn't the easiest to focus, especially with wide lenses. If this back had of been around I would definitely have bought one.
It is reassuring to see that high end equipment deliver as promised. They cost a huge amount of money, so expectations are high. Would Ansel Adams use a digital Hasselblad if he were alive? The answer is absolutely, but I doubt if he would have been amused at all with all the Image creation software that have now accompanied the digital bandwagon. Great presentation.
I think it's the size that is the winner and the method of use is a completely different experience to DSLR. Joy to use. Thanks for your comments, best Ian
The very best review by of one version of a Hasselblad 50mp camera and and XCD 3.5/45mm lens. I have the X1D Mark II with the smaller 45P lens and would love to know how what you think of the 907X vs X1d which has an excellent EVF but no tilting LCD screen . I assume image quality would be similar if not identical but maybe not if Hasselblad made adjustments to the imaging. Also, as a lifetime large format landscape photographer (Linholf 4x5) I agree Ansel would have been impressed. Thank you Ian.
Very nice review...you did very well for the first time! I like the simplistic approach to the comparative view of the three cameras. I have the 503CW and look forward to get sometime soon the 907X 50c kit. Also I have a Chamonix 45H1 and are looking for a “V” back plate to be able to use the 50c digital back. Well done Ian, thank you! Be safe...Cheers.

Hey!!!! You did really well Ian. I'll subscribe for sure. Please do more. I too shoot large format, but film. I also shoot with a Hasselblad 501 CM, so all of this I found really interesting. The video was put together very well. Great job all!
Very kind, thanks Cade. With it's price point it gives photographers like you an ideal way in to digital large and medium format. I'm also sure some of the older Schnieder/Rodenstock lenses will perform very well with this size of sensor. Good luck Ian
by the way this statement @ 2:59 is correct, that the xcd lens is the smallest format system, as ALL xcd systems are 6 x 4.5 cm in size !! - only the original V & H systems are 6 x 6 cm ! this is also why the new body has an X in the name!!-even though it fits V system bodies, but the CAMERA end, is 6 X 4.5 cm image circle (the distance from sensor/ film plane to lens mount is so small; in the V / H systems there is a mirror mechanics to account for, so lenses are designed to focus at different distance).
I have no idea what the image circle of the XCD lenses are other than they cover the 43 x 32mm sensor. If they cover 6cm circle I would be surprised, if they do it would suggest that they are considering a full frame 6x6.45 (53x40. 120 film is 6cm wide but there is a rebate which makes 53mm full frame) back in this system, which I would doubt due the increased costs! I think the xcd wide lenses are similar to my wide Rodenstock's which retro focus, i.e a 50mm at infinity wouldn't be 50mm from the nodal point, but closer due to being mirrorless.
Excellent ‘first outing’ on the other side of the camera! That back really has caught my eye and I think this shows off really well how good it is to slow down on a shoot. The current trend of 20fps ‘spray and pray’ is not my way of working and this feels almost as good as running a roll of Provia through an A12 back. The only thing missing with the digital back is the dark slide... but at least you can’t lose it ;-) Look forward to your next production.
At last!!!! Real review as done by real photographer with experience, knowledge and vision!
Thank you so much!
Very Kind Thanks Ian

Fantastic review, thanks very much.
Enjoyed your review. Many Thanks.
Great video. Really interesting.
The only thing missing with the digital back is the dark slide... but at least you can’t lose it ;-) Look forward to your next production.
but at least you can’t lose it ;-) or bend it in your back pocket!! Thanks for your comments. Best Ian
